Animal of the Day!
Siberian Taimen (Hucho taimen)
Tumblr media
(Photo from Wild Salmon Center)
Conservation Status- Vulnerable
Habitat- Volga River; Pechora River; Yana River; Amur River
Size (Weight/Length)- 90 kg; 1.8 m
Diet- Fish; Small mammals; Birds
Cool Facts- The Siberian taimen is the largest trout species in modern history. The largest taimen ever caught was a whopping 2.1 meters and 105 kilograms. They are extremely fast fish, targeting smaller fish and even rodents or birds that come too close to the shoreline. Siberian taimen can live into their 50’s but it can take a decade before they’re sexually mature. This slow growth results in their population being at threat from intensive fishing efforts. Luckily, much of their population is protected and instead catch-and-release practices are emphasized. Efforts to limit illegal poaching and river pollution are being attempted throughout Mongolia and China.
Rating- 13/10 (A beloved fly-fishing target for those Twitter profile pics.)

Fishuary 2024 - Day 2: Salmonids @fish-daily
The Siberian or Mongolian taimen (Hucho taimen) is the largest known salmonid, and has been known to attack and feed on adult salmon during their seasonal runs!
Here's some information about this and other species of taimen from the Wild Salmon Center.

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Want to slam some salmon? Try the Siberian taimen! They are the largest species of salmonid in the world, with adults weighing up to 30 kg (66 lb) and reaching 180 cm (71 in) in length! Unlike other salmonid species, they are not anadromous, meaning they don't migrate; instead they spend their whole lives in the flowing rivers of central Asia.

Big fish. Big fish.
Tumblr media
Image by Heinz Machacek The Siberian Taimen, a member of the salmon family, can hit over 6 feet long and weigh over 200 pounds. An absurd amount of freshwater fish right here.

Environment and Life of Barad Eithel
For an anon who requested this, I’m so sorry for the delay! I did Hithlum which I’m actually rewriting but I’d love to write more about the environment and life of Barad Eithel specifically!
I also did want to do some smaller locations and ecosystems as well as more larger regions that I constantly go back and add more to. These will include both smaller parts of the areas I’ve done and new ones (I’ll continue to do larger areas too and I’ll take requests for any!)
Flora, fauna and geography of Arda
Barad Eithel (”tower of the well”) is the fortress of Fingolfin and Fingon prior to the Nirnaeth. It is situated at the Eithel Sirion, the spring that is the source of the great river Sirion and was on the Eastern side of the Ered Wethrin, a vast mountain range that made up the boundary of Hithlum. Barad Eithel was actually just outside the boundary of Hithlum but was often considered part of it. West of Ethel Sirion and Barad Eithel there was a passage through the Ered Wethrin that lead to Mithrim.
The environment was cool and less humid than Dor-lómin during the summer months and with lots of snowfall in winter. Mist rises from the river as well as from Hithlum’s sea mists and thicker fog is also common.
It is also more heavily forested with both deciduous and coniferous trees. Examples include the silver fir, common holly, common yew, small leaved linden and several species of ash, larch, and pine.
Flora of the area is hardy and survives a thinner atmosphere. Purple milkvetch, short leaved sedge, tea leaved willow for examples although it is worth noting the proximity to Ard Galen, the lush and fertile green lands directly East.
Ribbon leaf water plantain, needle spike rush, shining pond weed, arrowhead, and least bulrush as well as others grow in the slower moving parts of the river and nearby streams and pools. Some of these are edible (if interest I’d love to do more on edible plants here or elsewhere throughout Arda)
There are lots of species that thrive in the Northernmost parts of the Sirion, both in the cold but clean and nutrient rich water itself and by the banks into the forest and mountains.
Pine martens, red and gray foxes, timber wolves, lynxes, Siberian weasel, bank vole, birch mouse, Brandt’s bat, reindeer, noctole, caucasian mole as well as the horses and other herd animals brought by Fingolfin.
In vales nearby the well, the horses graze on rye grasses, fescue, and meadow grasses.
A sample of the fish that might be found in this part of Sirion include the taimen, brown trout (of the purely freshwater ecotype), ide, bitterling, minnows, and species of freshwater catfish.
As I believe exist throughout Arda (and is supported by Tolkien’s description that ‘all creatures that ever walked the earth and many that did not’) there are species that no longer exist on earth today.  In the springs of the river Sirion occasionally the shadows of something like Glyphis hastalis, a freshwater shark can be found on its hunts. An ominous sight for any who spot it but they pose no danger to the elven inhabitants of Barad Eithel
Like with Himring, many species of birds are migratory, spending parts of the year near the great springs and part of the year West in the milder coastal climate of Nevrast or East in Ossiriand.
Birds of this realm might include the bar headed goose, snow goose, alpine swift, stellar’s eider, Siberian grouse, and taiga flycatcher as well as the other species listed in Hithlum (I do continuously go back to edit and add to my longer environment posts though)
I hope this is ok, anon! Please let me know if you have more questions or topics!

Directors @adambagger and @andymaser don’t mess around. They traveled to the wilderness of the Russian Far East to create this beautiful piece. It’s another reminder of how powerful and yet fragile this planet is. River Tigers Siberian taimen, the largest salmon in the world, still reign in undisturbed rivers in the coastal Russian Far East. These watersheds are reachable only by air, buffered by roadless expanses of forest. In the early 2000s, Russian and American scientists identified this tract of untouched taimen watersheds as a key global conservation priority after the fall of the Soviet Union. But in recent years, caviar poachers and Chinese-funded logging ventures have been pushing deeper in these watersheds. One river, the Tugur, is rumored to have remained intact. American conservationist and fly fisherman Guido Rahr joins with a local ally of Russian fisheries science, Mikhail Skopets, to explore the Tugur in the hopes of catching giant taimen to better understand the state of the river, its future, and what they can do to save it. https://www.instagram.com/p/CDAQz7_p4qa/?igshid=12qg2psmn95ml

Yakutia Trailer - F3T 2017 from Capt Jack Productions on Vimeo.
Capt Jack Productions present Yakutia... In 2005 Ilya Sherbovich, owner of Ponoi River Russia, began exploring the rivers of remote Siberia. His expeditions were no small task and not for the faint of heart. The first trip took him to two rivers, the Besuki and Olanjok, in Yakutia province. It was a successful mission but Ilya and his mates knew they had just scratched the surface. 11 years later Ilya amassed a crew of a dozen anglers and explorers with the goal of surveying further into the Yakutia province than ever before. Yakutia is the story of this intrepid group and their adventure across 10 far-flung Siberian rivers. Within these distant watersheds they find taimen, lennok, grayling and monster pike while engaging in an ultimate pursuit for Russian Nelma… a giant predatory fish which has never been caught on a fly.
Big thanks to Thomas & Thomas Fly Fishing | YETI | Simms Fishing Products Ilya and his whole Ponoi crew. And of course my boy Keith M Rose-Innes Beattie Outdoor Productions, RA Beattie, Off the Grid Studios - Live and Breathe fly fishing adventure - #CaptJackProductions #OfftheGridStudios #ThomasandThomasFlyRods #Yeti #SimmsFishing

Perca do Nilo
