Fishuary 2024 - Day 2: Salmonids @fish-daily
The Siberian or Mongolian taimen (Hucho taimen) is the largest known salmonid, and has been known to attack and feed on adult salmon during their seasonal runs!

Animal of the Day!
Siberian Taimen (Hucho taimen)
Tumblr media
(Photo from Wild Salmon Center)
Conservation Status- Vulnerable
Habitat- Volga River; Pechora River; Yana River; Amur River
Size (Weight/Length)- 90 kg; 1.8 m
Diet- Fish; Small mammals; Birds
Cool Facts- The Siberian taimen is the largest trout species in modern history. The largest taimen ever caught was a whopping 2.1 meters and 105 kilograms. They are extremely fast fish, targeting smaller fish and even rodents or birds that come too close to the shoreline. Siberian taimen can live into their 50’s but it can take a decade before they’re sexually mature. This slow growth results in their population being at threat from intensive fishing efforts. Luckily, much of their population is protected and instead catch-and-release practices are emphasized. Efforts to limit illegal poaching and river pollution are being attempted throughout Mongolia and China.
Rating- 13/10 (A beloved fly-fishing target for those Twitter profile pics.)

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Want to slam some salmon? Try the Siberian taimen! They are the largest species of salmonid in the world, with adults weighing up to 30 kg (66 lb) and reaching 180 cm (71 in) in length! Unlike other salmonid species, they are not anadromous, meaning they don't migrate; instead they spend their whole lives in the flowing rivers of central Asia.

who decided khaganian intrigues should be rng based and also the only alternatives to spamming them in order to get a much-needed gap are either locked until you have 20 network strength or reliant on obtaining a corresponding sounder. Again.

ok everyone's star wars fursonas:
lycaea: nexu
tank: a nerf
nehari: she'd say something edgy like a hssiss but she actually hates the sith too much to base any fursona off sith-associated animals. it's actually a tooka, a cat-like creature that is kept as pets and sometimes regarded as a nuisance.
messilandre: akk dog
aereinys: that cold weather cat species i gave her for a pet... but i forgot the name of it... RIP....
tai: lycaea would say it's a gizka but tai would say its a stellar wriggler. but he actually just isn't a furry.
harin so would refuse to pick a fursona and say the concept doesn't exist on voss.
irl wolfs and cats are very popular fursonas
what would be the popular star wars ones? I think if lycaea was a furry, her fursona would be a nexu

Posting this preview of a grassland AU side fic so I actually come back to this fic and finish it this next weekend. Did you know there’s a fish in Mongolian rivers known as a water-wolf for its size? Because I didn’t before today. And since we know Sylus is fond of night fishing
 idk. This started happening.
Also I swear I am working on an engagement fic. This was going to be part of it, but it got too big and spawned it’s own little side story.
Perhaps you should be surprised.
Rivers are few and far between over much of the grassland. Most tend to leave them alone, for various reasons. You’ve heard stories of monstrous creatures that lurk beneath rushing rapids, of the taimen fish that can eat geese or small children in a single gulp, and of fierce river demons ready to drag down careless travelers. On the rare occasion that the men do fish, it tends to be in the dead of winter, when there are precious few other options for food, and a protective layer of ice between them and whatever lurks below. Since it’s currently the height of summer, in the last few minutes of scorching sun before the short night begins, the villagers are more than content to give the rushing water a very wide berth.
Of course, you think to yourself, if there’s to be an exception to almost any rule, it would be him.
You’ve caught sight of Sylus’s white hair, dyed gold in the last rays of daylight, as you watch him stride out of your temporary settlement. Though you can’t see his face as he walks away, you do see a familiar length of smooth bamboo and a bag slung over his broad shoulder. You’ve seen the bamboo rod before, sitting among the more usual things in Sylus’s yurt. Usually, long or bulky items aren’t taken along in the nomad tribes unless they are of some significance, or are able to be quickly broken down, so it had briefly caught your curiosity. However, it wasn’t unusual enough for you to bother asking, and you’d forgotten about it completely until now.
You watch him walk for a moment, giving him a bit of distance, before you begin to follow. The sunset quickly gives way to a blue-violet twilight as you quietly wade through the shifting grasses, keeping yourself at a set distance from his back.
“You’re going to lose me in the dark if you keep so far behind, little huntress” Sylus calls. You freeze in place, and he turns his head slightly, showing a bit of his smug grin, “wouldn’t want you getting lost, now, would we?”
Damn it.
There’s no use keeping up the pretense if he’s spotted you, so you jog slightly to catch up to his pace. “You’re the one headed towards a river in the dark, worry about yourself.”
“Worried about my safety, sweetie? How magnanimous of you.”
You snort. “Of course not. I’m just curious as to what you’re doing with that stick.”
“Catching monsters, of course.”
You frown at his airy reply. What does that mean?

"Houkka poika, omillahi maillasi voit rauhassa mennÀ hukkumaan!

Hennon taimen raskas taakka
olisiko minusta hennon taimen hoivaajaksi?
"meil satakunnas myÀs ukoil o ollu tapan ottaa osaa yhteisii kasvatushommii", iskin takaisin.
uusin tulokas alkaisi kukkia pari kuukautta ennen minun taimeani.
kysyin pohjalaiselta mitÀ me tekisimme.
tuhosin jotain sellaista jota minun olisi pitÀnyt osata hoivata
voiko Àiti maa antaa anteeksi, ettÀ surusta huolimatta pÀÀllimmÀinen tunne on helpotus?

---
Maa- ja metsĂ€talousministeriön on vahvistanut asetuksellaan uhanalaisille ja taantuneille kaloille rahallisen arvon. Alamittaisen luvattomasti kalastetun taimenen arvoksi on vahvistettu 260 euroa. ElĂ€kelĂ€ismies tuomittiin maksamaan valtiolle rikoksen tuottamana hyötynĂ€ 10 140 euroa.
Mies tuomittiin lisÀksi kalastusrikkomuksesta 25 pÀivÀsakon rangaistukseen. PÀivÀsakon hinnaksi tuli 13 euroa ja maksettavaa on 325 euroa. Tuomio annettiin kirjallisessa menettelyssÀ viime viikolla.

Just realized I never posted my rough notes on the people from the lands Kezo is from soooo *leaves this here*
(this is post SotS by over a decade due to the last settlement in the notes being included technically- but like if you ignore that the info can be fine Wilds to SotS times as well)
Under the keep reading thing cuz long
Nehwera!!! (Not a ‘kingdom’ or ‘country’- kinda just the agreed upon mutual name they call the region they all live in ‘cuz intertwined histories lol)
ZORA
Tropical: Domain itself is underwater in a giant cenote, in the middle of a rainforest. Coast has mangroves, close ties with Rainforest Rito. Art is CRAZY important to their culture and they mostly trade in dyes and whatnot. Though outside of trading they don’t leave their territory much as they aren’t really typically warriors or anything. (Gurnards, pufferfishes, and lionfish- Kezo’s ability to glide is an anomaly / rare mutation)
Aquifer: Live in the giant aquifer rivers under the great desert, blind. Nomadic with no real domain. Smaller than most too. Mostly positive connections with the other civilizations, despite it being uncommon for them to leave their lands. (mexican tetras)
Tidepool Plateau: Huge swath of tidepools on cliffs where the water gets really high at night and completely retreats at day. No real domain instead they nap in ‘waterbeds’ between rocks, like seals, at night. It's really peaceful and chill there anyways and kind of paradise-y. Kinda leads to them being super optimistic and trusting and well, not really understanding the outside world really. (Blennies and lumpsuckers)
Arctic: Their domain is basically hidden inside a giaaant glacial ice thing big enough to be basically an island in its own right, though they fish and work in the waters around it. Chubby to conserve body heat (blubber lol)!!! Bigger than average (since arctic creatures tend to be?) Many of the region’s greatest explorers have come from them- heck their settlement has probably more knowledge of settlements around the planet then any alive currently. (Taimen and burbot)
Oasis: Live in the many oases in the center of the great desert, pretty well off and have plenty of water. Domain is on the sand outside the biggest oasis, but they have many villages in the other ones. Rich as heck and kind of stuck up about it, has lead to most settlements not entirely liking them, and only really dealing with them because they pay good. (Mix of bettas, killifish, and bichir all at once :P)
Saltplanes: Only real water is thin salt lakes and brine pools, but most is just salt flats. Supper lithe and skinny looking (and well often actually skinny due to low resources). Used to live in the geysers outside the great desert long ago but were driven out of their rich land by a huge eruption. Struggling to survive now but too ‘stubborn’ (read: almost certain they’ll become second class citizens and / or be made to assimilate so feel its the better option) to accept the Oasis Zora’s invitation to join them, so are currently just getting by in extreme poverty with many relying on crime / banditry of trade routes to survive. No real domain for obvious reasons. Great Desert too. (Pipefish)
———————
RITO
Rainforest: Closely allied with the tropical Zora (in fact intergroup marriages aren’t entirely uncommon and are viewed with kindness). Though they live high up in the canopies of the rainforest’s trees and outside of interacting with them don’t really go to the forest’s floor. The music to the tropical zora’s art. Sun’s important to them for navigating amongst other things. Houses are suspended from big branches and connected by rope bridges. (Mostly toucans, with some parrots and tanagers)
Canyon: Live in the northern region of the canyons that separate the Great Desert from the rest of the region- considered kinda creepy but harmless by most of the other people, mostly due to their overly complex speech (that’s what happens when you prioritize philosophy I guess lmao). Build their houses into the cliff sides. (Vultures and condors- also caracara’s because I love how goofy they look beatle ah looking faces imo)
Mire: Tall houses on stilts yippee! Stealthy, great spies and assassins- but have a pretty complex code that lets other groups hire individuals- but at the base of it they won’t attack their own people. TALL AS HECK (Herons and Bitterns!!!)
SCREE: Houses are dug underground- don’t have much for them yet but they love riddles hehe- basically live in the windy transition zone between the lower lands and the mountains. (Ravens and crows :>)
Taiga: (uhm basically the land before the sea the arctic zora live in) Nocturnal, village is hidden in some valley somewhere and outside trade is done through a side town they set up for that purpose (Owls)
Prairie: MY FAVS. Live in fairly ‘standard’ houses, naturally flightless but GREAT runners- you do not want to be kicked by one trust me- use a sort of mix between hang gliders and kites, and running rlly quick before kicking off to ‘fly’. Considered kind of aggressive by the other settlements buuuut they have the most stable grown food system minus the Tidepool Zora AAND loads of large herds. Unusually, unlike most rito, aren’t primarily bow users, instead are known for their spears and shields. (Cassowaries, emus, and secretaries)
Volcanic: Idk about them yet but live on the volcano whose eruption messed up the saltplane’s home- (shrikes and finches)
Spring: At the toppppp of the mountains where there’s loads of hot springs in this huge dip so its surprisingly warm compared to the rest of the high areas and usually foggy. Basically consider themselves the gods’ fav children and, though full of themself, aren’t open about it like the oasis zora and are instead the more (imo worse) roundabout ‘im so great and kind’ way that slowly mentally breaks you down <\3. Houses have a lot of stained glass + exterior banners and bells. Totally not initially based (idea wise that is for their demeanour) on one of the ‘folk in my family who uses ‘I’m religious!’ as an excuse to look down upon everyone and be an asshole subtly- when following like nothing they preach :P (cranes)
———————
OTHER / INDIVIDUAL SETTLEMENT (AS IN LIKE THE SPECIES ONLY HAS THE ONE INSTEAD OF A BUNCH OF DIFF CULTURES LOL)
Kaolinite Goron: GOOBERS! Can’t roll but they’re slippery so they slide on their bellies instead like penguins, half the height of normal goron- low heat tolerance because they need LOADS of water. Make the best ceramics frfr. Happy go lucky and forgive easily. Unlike typical goron though genderless beings they tend to use she or they rather then he or they because yes. Squishier and more flexible therefore harder to crush (so hammer resistant?) buuuut blades can hurt more <\3 MOSSES NATURALLY GROW ON THEIR BACK SHELLS AND SOMETIMES LITTLE FLOWERS AND STUFF WHEN INDIVIDUALS LIVE IN THE ABOVEGROUND SETTLEMENTS!!! Situational type caves- LURAY CAVERN LIKE IN APPEARANCE MIXED WITH A LITTLE BIT SON DOONG CAVE IN THE HIGHER AREAS BECAUSE PRETTYYYYYY (Uh
 Kaolinite / clay lol)
Zonai Remnants: Ew <\3 Just some fuckers who are still secretly sour their imperialistic civilization failed. Leave deep underground and tho knows about the people above the opposite isn’t true. Consider the aboveground / ‘organic cultures’ obsolete anyways. Wayyy too obsessed with cybernetic ‘enhancements’ (you can tell how high ranking in their caste system someone is by how freaky robotic they are) to the point that they are slowly dying off because it's absolutely destroying their fertility and ability to carry to term (so they play it off as being ‘pure’ but nahhh bros just can’t make babies half- most of uhm- the time because they’re more metal then flesh <\3). Fur is kind of patchy half the time due to enhancements on the higher ranked ones but this is seen as a point of pride- some also become kind of mentally unstable due to being riddled with machinery in their brains obv. ‘Flesh is weakness’ ah fuckers. Primary and fracture caves + artificial caves- artificially kept colder then it should be at its depth (better for the machines lmao) huggge with multiple ‘zones’, highest ranks living in an artificially made deciduous forest with seasons and a fake sun and weather and everything (helps keep their tech riddled minds sane)- lowest layer is pretty dark and
normal cavey kept lit by lights during ‘day’. Bottom looks basically like chevĂ© cave, top looks like a basic forest + fields where the houses are just with a rock wall at the ends, middles are kinda like sima homboldt. Ignoring the tech EVERYWHERE. (
Zonai? Also not at all because my fav groups in basically every sci fi I like are the creepy morally not okay cyborg idiots lmao)
Petrified Koroks: Oops old forest had issues, now the koroks are bad help. The fog traps people to fertilize the (guys they’re basically rock now guys this isn’t doing anything-) trees instead of letting them back out (doesn’t like, kill them or anything they just can’t leave- its just not exactly healthy to have no food sources and being constantly harassed to play with little forest dudes)- not out of malicion they’re literally just lonely- do so also because ‘it keeps our new friend here!’ (Even tho they end up being upset soon after when this ‘friend’ starves) and can’t leave due to technically being dead spirits so its the best they can do <\3. Still pretty upset about some event literally nobody else remembers but refuse to clarify, haven’t actually spoken to anyone (at least who didn’t get trapped in the forest) in living memory anyways. Petrified forest but its way thicker and has whole standing trees petrified too how o d d (Petrified forests- also I just wanted sad fellas that I feel bad for and don’t understand they’re doing harm. Your honour these are basically dead toddlers <\3)
Yiga Settlement?!: the clan just followed Aublai there and finally gets to live in the open and
be a people again now that the kingdom of hyrule is def over due to the last member being stuck as a dragon and the demon king being gone- helps that the local settlements don’t know about ‘em. Kinda just chilling and trying to learn how to be a normal not mostly militarized people again, finally healing!!! <3 just rolling sometimes rocky hills yippee, some forests too (My beloveds grgrgr)
