I said this in my reblog of it but I wanna say directly how much I love the way you draw Ghost in your gijinka art. Such a sweet portrayal of them as a blunt but caring kiddo <333 They wont quirk a smile but they will shove a pillow into your side to get you to take a nap. They have the vibes of the kid in the corner who only comes out to give their friends a mud pie because they wanna make sure they get dessert.

I really like drawing Ghost acting like an older sibling or parent to their siblings and their children, even if Ghost isn't exactly the oldest. Ghost used to have to live wandering around within many enemies so they are quite clumsy in expressing their feelings but they still do what they believe is best for their family

lalapril 26: Rewind

sometimes traveling to the past is not all fun and games as patti quickly learns.

The door slammed itself closed behind Patti as she slumped down beside it. She was clutching an old journal against her chest, holding onto it like it was going to disappear any moment. “Stupid…This is so stupid!” She balled up her hands and tried to wipe her tears away. “I’m so stupid…!”

The entire house was quiet today but it felt even more suffocating inside her own room. 

The blinds were shut and the entire room was dark. With nothing but the sounds of Patti’s quiet sniffling filling the empty air. “Mama…Mama...” All of this was her fault. If she had only done just one thing differently then none of this would be happening. “I’m sorry…I’m so sorry Mama…” 

Patti laid down on the floor, holding the journal closer to her. “I just wanna go back…” She shut her eyes, trying to think back to yesterday. 

That was the day her entire family had all made their way to Costa del Sol to celebrate the Moonfire Faire. Patti couldn’t remember a year that went by when they didn’t go. One of her earliest memories was her mama letting her try grilled corn. 

It was a little too hot but it was one of the yummiest things she had ever tasted! 

The Moonfire Faire was one of the many holidays that Patti looked forward to every year. Honestly she enjoyed every holiday but if you asked her which one she liked the best she would tell you the Moonfire Faire by a malm! 

Sometimes if she got lucky it would even land near her nameday!

…Which just made this entire thing even more of a nightmare for her. 

If Patti had even a hint of what was going to happen after then she would have never asked her mama if she could go back to the mainland to try and find a pretty shell she and Lemon saw earlier.

At the time only her mama and Lemon had come with her. Everything was perfect. 

That’s when Patti noticed someone walking behind her. 

Somehow she'd seen this person before, back at the Moonfire Faire. Patti thought nothing of it. This was probably someone who was attending the same festival. Maybe they were going home? 

The very second she let her guard, Patti felt her arm being grabbed.

She looked down to see a knife being held against the neck. 

“M-Mama!!”

Patti watched as her mama turned around to look at her. The smile on her face stayed frozen on her face as she quickly realized what was happening. She remembered hearing her brother crying as their mama told them it was going to be okay. 

Lemon didn’t want to leave her side, even as Patti hugged him tight he kept crying out for her. 

Somehow her and Lemon were left alone. Whoever these people were, they only wanted their mama to come with them. The next thing Patti knew she was looking up at her papa and crying her eyes out. Through her tears she tried to tell him everything she could but she just couldn’t say anything.

Lemon was even worse. When papa was with them he wouldn’t let him go no matter what anyone said. 

They fled all the way to her grandma Lunya's house and there her papa explained that tío Cherry went to find where the bad guys had taken her mama and that once he found them, he was going to go help Cherry save her. 

Patti didn’t want to let her papa go. She was afraid of something happening to him too. But surprisingly, it was Lemon who helped her feel better. He assured her the whole time that her papa was super strong, just like mama! So there was nothing to worry about!

‘The only reason mama didn’t fight the bad guys was because we were there!’

Patti was glad he was here with her. For a bit, she felt everything was going to be fine. 

Until mama and papa came back the next morning. 

Ever since then Patti had been trying desperately to go back.

Normally something like that would be impossible, but not for Patti. “Go back!” Patti’s eyes glowed a bright yellow. Her time travel powers never usually worked beyond a few minutes but that wasn’t going to stop her from trying.

She could feel herself moving back just a couple of seconds. 

She tried again, and again. The seconds were always different but the amount of time she could travel back was never more than a minute. As natural as time traveling was for her, it was still tiring. Patti couldn’t keep this up. No matter how much she wanted to. 

Patti traveled back another five seconds. It was getting harder to breathe. Whether it was because of the exertion or all the crying she had done, she didn’t know. “I SAID GO BACK!!” She grit her teeth and slammed her fists on the ground, sobbing. 

Patti tried to take a minute to try and calm herself down. It was easier said than done. 

Trying to steady her shaky breathing, she carefully held the tattered journal in front of her. The journal belonged to her papa. She had seen it many times before.

The first time was when she was younger. It was on a rainy day when her papa showed her and Lemon some of the entries about him and mama before they started dating. 

Of course Patti felt bad for stealing it from her own papa but this had to be done. As she opened it to a previously marked page a bunch of words stood out to her immediately. 

Words like starsinger, taken, lose forever in particular stood out to her. 

Babycorn herself hadn’t kept the secret of being a Starsinger from her children, nor did she ever shy away from how dangerous it all was. Since she was young Patti could remember her mama telling her that she needed to stay close to her no matter where they were.

How if she saw certain people she was supposed to come running to her right away.

Patti really just thought it was overkill but now…

As she continued to flip through her papa’s diary more and more things started to stand out to her. Especially the parts where he wrote about someone coming out of nowhere and trying to take Babycorn away to use her powers for their own gain.

 “This happened b-before…?” It was almost too much of a coincidence to believe. Too many things were lining up. Including the state her mama was in now. “Papa said she would wake up soon but…” The journal told her that last time this happened her mama had spent almost two months doing nothing but laying in bed, staring into nothing. 

Patti couldn’t stand just waiting around not doing anything while her mama needed help. Even worse was having to see her papa looking so defeated. The look on his face when he first came home was...

She needed to do something. 

Reading the journal Patti finally stumbled on the first time someone had taken her mama away. It happened so many years ago and her papa had for some reason blacked out a lot of parts of his entries away. 

Luckily the parts that were missing didn’t take anything away from the info that Patti needed. 

The exact days when it first happened. 

“Thank you papa…” 

Patti slowly closed the door behind her and stepped out into the backyard. “Okay….” She held out her papa’s journal in front of her. The exact dates she needed to travel back to kept running in a loop inside her mind, just so she wouldn’t forget. 

“I’ll be back soon mama, papa. I’ll fix everything I promise…!” 

This was going to be quick so the chances of anyone catching her out here were low. 

…But they weren’t zero.

The door to the backyard opened up once again, but this time it wasn’t Patti. She didn’t even have the chance to ask who was there before Lemon ran right at her, grabbing onto her tightly.

His baby chocobo, Blueberry, was resting on his head. “Patti! W-Where are you going?” He looked just about as tired as she felt. 

There was no way that Lemon knew what her plan was. 

“I’m just going for some air.”

“...Liar.” 

Patti did the smart thing and hid the journal behind her back. Okay maybe he did know. Either he had used his sibling bond to somehow figure out something was amiss or Blueberry had gone and snitched on her. “So what if I’m lying? What does it matter to you?!” It’s not like it had been his idea to go back to the mainland.

Lemon jumped, hearing his sister raise her voice so loud startled him. “What do you m-mean? What does what matter?” He wasn’t quite sure what his sister meant. The only thing that he was really sure of was that she was about to go somewhere really far away. 

“I-I’m coming too!”

“No you’re not!” 

Patti pushed her brother away and took a few steps back. “This is important! I can’t have you following me.” This particular jump wasn’t going to be anything like their previous ones. “I’m not going back to fool around Lemon. This is serious.” Patti was shaking in anger. 

Patti couldn’t let him come with her. She just couldn’t.

Lemon let out a sniffle, grabbing his tail for support. “I-I know it’s serious…! I’m n-not a baby…!” It’s not like he didn’t know what was happening! Even though he was terrified at the time it’s not like he couldn’t remember most of it.

In fact it was almost the complete opposite. 

“I know a really bad person tried to use mama’s powers and now she’s hurt really bad!” Butter tried to explain it to his children as easily as he could. Apparently a grieving father had taken their mama to change the event of his daughter dying during the calamity. 

Help had arrived too late to stop her from making it happen. 

“I know you wanna help mama! I wanna help mama too…!” That had to be the reason why Patti was going back in time today. He just had a feeling and it was very persistent. 

“Lemon just go away!” 

“B-But I always help you go back in time!” It had always been that way, ever since they first started. Patti would supply the time travel power itself but it was up to Lemon to open a portal big enough for them to walk through. “We always go together…” 

“Well this time you can’t!” What did Lemon not understand? 

Lemon wondered to himself what his own sister wasn’t understanding. He grabbed his tail, twisted and turning it nervously. The words were getting caught in his throat as he tried his hardest not to start crying again.

“I’m scared…” Those were the only words he could muster. 

As hard as Lemon tried against it, he started crying. “I-I want mama!!” He wailed, tears streaming down his face. Why couldn’t his mama hold him in her arms or pet his head like she always did when he was scared. 

Patti tried to turn away from the sight of her brother crying his eyes out and concentrate on her mission. ‘Once I fix everything, Lemon won’t be sad anymore. He won’t be crying! So just…!’ But the problem was that her brother was crying here and now. 

She couldn’t just…

Patti slowly bent down and got on her knees. As carefully as she could, she wrapped her arms around Lemon as he cried and cried. The truth had to come out eventually. “If something happened to you like what happened to mama I…I…” Just the thought alone was enough for Patti to start crying too. “...I d-don’t know what I would do…!” 

“That’s why I have to go t-too! I don’t want anything happening to you either P-Pipi!” 

“Lems…You…” 

Both siblings held onto each tightly, too scared to let the other go. 

Lemon wiped his eyes against his sister’s shirt. “We’re gonna make papa and tío Cherry happy again too…c-cause mama will be okay…!” Really Lemon had no idea what his sister had planned besides going back in time but he knew he could trust her. 

If there was anyone who could make all of this better, it was his sister!

“Y-Yeah…!” Patti took a deep breath and pushed herself back, “We got this if we work together.” 

Lemon smiled wide, showing off a few of his missing teeth. “Together!” 

As his sister composed herself he carefully reached above his head and grabbed the baby chocobo still slumbering in his hair. Their eyes slowly opened as they were placed on the grass. “Blueberry? Can you take care of mama and papa and tío Cherry while we’re gone?” 

Blueberry nodded and gave Lemon a tiny salute before hurrying back inside the house through the carbuncle door. 

“Ready Lems?” Patti held out her hand for him. Holding her papa’s journal in the other. Patti knew she was going to change everything. Things were going to be better. No matter what she had to do. 

Lemon wasted no time in taking his sister’s hand. His eyes glowed a familiar yellow. “Let’s go!”

Aaaaanother TGAA SwapAU stuff and it is my wonderful boy Albert as the prosecutor!!

I've changed some of the designs in this one like the jacket color to white to make a resemblance of a lab coat and reflecting of Kazuma white school uniform, as well trying to bring more Frankenstein's Monster vibe too hehe (aaand make him look more miserable too). He is also have a locket that have a painting of him and his two brothers, it was given by Andrew during his wedding!

I also made bunch of character that related to Swap!Albert's life from 10 years ago, like Andrew(Klint's roleswap) and his other brother Michael, university Barok and Albert, etc. more info about the are there down below 👇👇

First of I wanted to say I'm sorry I can't do full render of everyone here, do that with all of them would be death sentence for me so I couldn't do it 😭😭 Anyway without further ado, I'm going right into it! Start from left to right!

This first one Ryunosuke father replacing as Genshin Asogi. At first while brainstorming I was thinking of maybe do three switch around with Genshin, Jigoku, and Yujin but the it somehow felt weird for me. Then the thought of maybe involving Auchi in this too (like, imagine him being swap with Jigoku wouldn't that be funny and terrifying thought), but discarded that idea out because of Menimemo would have no one to swap with (i have to i'm sorry). Sooo I ended just design him from scratch, he is quite easy to figure out since Genshin doesn't really have much going on with him, but since we don't have any idea of original Ryunosuke's parents at all I have to take idea from something else, and that is his daruma doll for his eyes (he is half blind!! :D) and Phoenix DD/SOJ design (droopy hair and light vest) and everything else is from Genshin. His name is Ryuuki Naruhodo since Ryunosuke is another name for Ryuichi so I want to keep the train going!!

Andrew the screwdriver, oh I missed him- Anyway, I redesign his outfit because tbh his previous outfit is ridiculous 😭 it's funny and fun but I do want to take him seriously now. I'm tried to keep the A shape still but it's less subtle now, I think it turned out okay!! (Oh yeah, his cane is supposed to be a hidden sword but i forgot to put that in the drawing 😭). I was supposed to make his bowtie red like the hair tie but then I realized it will getting rid of the purpose of the hair tie (it referencing the blood on the tip of the screwdriver) so I ended up making it color silver.

The Lady Baskerville, I gave her similar design to Sunny(Herlock!Swap) with the bowtie, color palette to his mascot, and hair on her. I'm not really quite fond with her design, maybe I'll do redesign her again if I got a idea pop up like crazy but in the meantime this is her design.

Guess who is this?? Another one of Albert's tool is here finally!! Michael the crosshead screwdriver! Since we never see Michael anywhere and only mentioned once in the game he is, I'm just draw simple design for him (I wished I could put M shape in the design but I have no idea WHERE to put it 😭 so I tried used the bowtie for it). I also thought it would be nice to make him a defense attorney so I made the design for the badge too. Since he is sadly not going to be mentioned a lot in this AU since I'm trying to make the storyline same as the original, so I made a backstory of what happened in the fun fact tags. There was supposed to be more tool to be added but my god that would be taxing to design, so I have to make only Andrew and Michael as his only siblings.

The doggie Balmung replacement, Bolt, He is a Irish Setter! Beforehand he was supposed to be Borzoi but then research the background of the breed I don't how difficult it is to actually get one in that era so I have to changed breed :((

Writing Profoundly Intellectually Disabled Characters

[Plain Text: Writing Profoundly Intellectually Disabled Characters]

While there is a glaring lack of intellectually disabled characters - except maybe big, physically strong, white men who can’t “tell right from wrong” or have a personality - in all sorts of media, specifically profoundly intellectually disabled characters are next to non-existent, with the existing ones being used more often as plot devices rather than portrayed as human beings.

This does make a degree (and not more) of sense considering that 85% of ID people have it mild, 10% moderate, 3.5% severe and only 1.5% has profound ID, the larger group inevitably gets more representation (which doesn’t make it good, but it does exist). However, it hopefully doesn’t need explaining that minorities deserve to be represented too (...and represented well), so this is what this post will be about.

Please don’t treat this as your only source on writing a character like this (even though I’m willing to bet it’s the only one like this, at least on tumblr), do your research and always check other sources.

Also, for clarity: intellectual disability isn't an umberalla term for "mental/brain disability". It's a specific, singular diagnosis that used to be known as "mental [r slur]". It's not the same as brain damage, autism, dementia, dyslexia, and anything else that's not specifically "intellectual disability". It's something that you are either born with or acquire early in life.

How do I Include Them in the Story?

A profoundly ID person will spend the majority of their time either at home or in some sort of care facility since they will require 24/7 help. The easiest role to put them in is probably a family member of another character. I've mentioned on this blog before that the "ID characters always end up as the annoying younger sibling" thing is overdone, but none of these necessarily have to be true for this suggestion to work (especially not the "annoying" part).

A non-ID character could have an intellectually disabled older sibling, twin, cousin, uncle/aunt, the sibling of a grandparent, etc. Seriously - a severely disabled person can be an adult, or even an elder. Just not as a parent, since a profoundly disabled person can't consent (a lot of ID people very much can, but this is the one disability where your level of functioning is baked into the exact diagnosis - profound ID comes with the inability to consent/understand the consequences enough to consent).

"They're a family member" is basically the easiest "excuse" to include a profoundly intellectually disabled in a story (and, as a bonus, you don't have to figure out how the other character would react to meeting them for the first time, since they probably knew each other for a long time already).

If your story isn't about the profoundly disabled character and instead just features them as a character, it would be much easier to not make the other character their primary caregiver. It's simply a ton of work and the character wouldn't have time for fighting dragons and whatnot - it'd be easier to have the abled character spend time with the disabled character at home (or care facility; you can very much visit someone in one) hanging out rather than actually doing the caregiving part.

Outside of a home and a care facility, there are also day care programs that some people might attend. This is the rarest solution out of the three mainly because of financial reasons, but also these resources aren’t as common for people who can’t walk, learn self-care, etc. Going to one takes time (the profoundly disabled person isn’t gonna walk there by themselves) and probably requires a specialized van (that you can bring a wheelchair in, which is incredibly expensive). Most day care programs are focused on people who are moderately or severely ID at most. One made for profoundly ID people would require 1:1 aides, which generally means the programs are much smaller for logistical reasons, but also even more expensive. For most people, too expensive without funding. Basically, this is an option, but you have to consider your character’s financial situation and/or what kind of financial support do disabled people get where they live.

Another way is having the disabled character in some sort of high position - in real life there were quite a few cases of profoundly and severely intellectually disabled royalty. Depending on the place and time there might have been pressure to not let the public see them, but this wasn't always the case. The biggest example of the latter was probably Emperor An of Jin (the first Jin, Eastern one) who was, as his title suggests, crowned at some point. He didn’t actually rule (his uncle did) but yes, you can have a severely disabled person as the head of a monarchy, it’s not without precedent.

In fiction you can do whatever you want anyway when it comes to ableism, you can have it be there, or you can have it not be there - and if it does exist then there are still different kinds of ableism you can portray that aren't the "literally killing-the-disabled-baby/hiding-them-in-some-dungeon level of eugenics" kind. Maybe a rich family who cares about their image would actually be unable to shut up about their kid to show how "saint-like" they are for caring for the disabled - it is unfortunately realistic, and can be a potential way to have the character exist in public, not ignore ableism, and also not go the aforementioned literally-just-murder route that writers usually do to show an ableist family.

Warning; the bar here is somewhere in the Earth's inner core. If your character has a single characteristic beyond aggressive/loud/unmanageable*, they're automatically at the top of most complex fictional representation of severely/profoundly ID characters. Congrats.

* - Some people are those things but, unsurprisingly, they're other things too. A lot of profoundly ID people can actually be completely quiet - you notice people who are loud because they're loud.

As with literally every character, you need to figure out what they like and not like. This can be quite literally anything, but try to think of the basic stuff. Do they have something they really enjoy eating (and conversely - something they refuse to eat)? Do they have some sort of comfort toy or object they don't want anyone touching (and maybe showing them playing with it with a different character could be a way to show how much they trust them)? In more modern settings, do they have a favorite show they always bug everyone to put on? Are they really clingy or do they hate physical contact (again, maybe they only enjoy it from a specific character)?

Another characterization could be comfort objects. A lot of profoundly ID people are autistic (which I'll touch on later) and will have an object that they bring everywhere the same way that non-ID autistic people might. There's nothing really specific here, just another layer of "this character is a Person". Maybe they have a blanket they really enjoy chewing because the texture feels good or some sort of plushie they like to throw around because it makes a sound they find funny. Lots of options. Maybe they have a personal “tell” to let others know they want their comfort object brought to them.

Keep in mind, you have to show this all in non-verbal manner. A profoundly ID person is probably not using any sort of AAC device (the most robust one I remember seeing right now was a low-tech one with "yes" and "no", but there are probably ones who operate on a larger amount of singular words). This is basically another opportunity for characterization - what do they do when they're happy - laugh, flap their arms, make sounds? - and when they're upset - scream, hit themselves, make different sounds? Obviously, you'd have to take other disabilities into account (e.g. many profoundly ID people won't move much, some might not be able to make much audible sound, etc.) but almost anything helps.

This brings us to…

Communication

An important thing (concept?) I'll throw here is "total communication", which can mean different things in different contexts, but here I'll use it to mean "using everything you can to communicate with someone who cannot do so in a ‘traditional’ way".

Communication can be categorized as having two sides; expressive and receptive. For most intellectually disabled people in general, receptive skills tend to be significantly higher than expressive ones, though there are specific disorders where it’s reversed or equal. As mentioned before, most profoundly ID people won’t speak orally, won’t use sign language, and won’t use AAC (though out of all three, AAC is the most likely one). Some might say single words, but that’s about it. It’s not a “physically mute but can write perfectly grammatically correct sentences” situation, it’s more of a “[single noun]” one, if anything. Receptive skills however are pretty decent (in comparison) and they would probably understand their name, the name/title of their carer(s), names of things they see every day, events they have some frame of reference to (e.g. if they grew up Christian, they would probably know what Christmas is), etc. Your other characters could (and should) talk to them like they can understand, even if they don’t catch everything or even most of it. I say a lot of “probably” there, but the people who can’t do so usually have other comorbidities, which I’ll mention later.

To go back to expressive communication, eye pointing can be used to figure out what the character wants. A change in breathing can be used to tell that a character got stressed. Throwing an object can be used as a hint that the character wants to play. Maybe them reaching towards person A means they want to eat, but reaching towards person B means they want them to sing a song for them. Maybe them making a particular face means they just had a seizure and need to be comforted. Whatever their "tells" like this might be, other characters who know them would probably be able to tell more-or-less what's going on - you don't have to go really in-depth, especially if it's a minor character, but figuring out the ways your character communicates with others will make it feel more like a person and not a Disabled Lamp (“if you can replace a disabled character with a lamp or a sick dog, they’re not a character”).

If you read some of these and go "that's a thing that a child would do" then you're not necessarily wrong. A profoundly ID adult might enjoy activities that primarily kids partake in. This is, I can't stress this enough, not the same as "mentally being a child". Otherwise, a whole bunch of adults on this very website would be "mental middle schoolers" based on the shows that they watch - but they're obviously not. A profoundly ID adult doesn't have the "mind of a baby" if their favorite game is throwing a toy, they have the mind of a profoundly intellectually disabled adult. Sometimes people assume that since ID people aren't mentally [incorrect age], they always "act their [actual] age" and essentially end up downplaying how much some people's ID affects them, when the point is that no matter what you do, you are your age. An ID character who is 26 years, incontinent, constantly puts their hand in their mouth, can't speak, whatever, is mentally 26 years old the same way that they would be if they had a wife and a mortgage.

For the last thing from this section I'll circle back to the assumption that all severely/profoundly ID people are loud, aggressive, etc. - as I said, some of them are (just like abled people). The thing is, this is not always an unreasonable response to being unable to communicate with the people who are caring for you. If you had a pressure sore but couldn't explain it to anyone you'd be pissed off and screaming too. That's an extreme example, but still applies. If someone is severely stressed out (for an abled person, this might be inheriting a ton of debt, for a profoundly ID person it can be a change in daily routine), they can lash out. It's an unpleasant but very much human reaction to have, even if what's behind the ID person's behavior is significantly different from what an average abled person might consider "a good reason".

So I guess my advice is, try to show some empathy to the character, even if they genuinely are loud and/or aggressive. Intellectually disabled people - including the profoundly disabled ones - aren't some alien species that is just mean and hates their caregivers for no reason, some just can't process their feelings the way an abled person might because of their disability. That's not to say that caregivers aren't allowed to feel frustrated - because they are - but that very severely disabled people aren't purposefully evil. As mentioned in the earlier parts, all behavior has a cause, just like for literally everyone. So if the character is being "unmanageable": maybe they aren't some cursed burden, maybe they're just stressed out of their mind and now someone they don't know that well is trying to do *something* to them, which they can't figure out because of their disability affecting their receptive language skills.

Some resources you might read about ID can be potentially misleading. Even if you specifically look for causes of the profound severity of intellectual disability, you will get results for mild ID. That's mainly because people with mild ID make up >85% of intellectually disabled people and those with profound ID make like 1%, so they're a minority in a minority.

Basically:

Down syndrome is a very unlikely cause. It's always listed as the main genetic cause of ID, but that's only true for mild and moderate severities. If you choose any of the common causes of ID make sure it actually has the symptoms you're looking for.

Most profoundly ID people will have either severe brain damage early in life (and this can come with cerebral palsy), cephalic disorders (e.g. microcephaly), genetic conditions that you've never heard of (e.g. Pallister-Killian or Emanuel syndromes, 3p deletion), genetic conditions that you've never heard of for a very understandable reason (e.g. X-linked intellectual disability-limb spasticity-retinal dystrophy-arginine vasopressin deficiency… there are hundreds named in this way), or just have it without a known cause. The last one happens much more often than people tend to assume.

For a reason I'll probably discover at some point, most disorders and syndromes that come with ID are said to have "autistic-like features" rather than being "comorbid with autism". In practice, it's the same thing. Your character is probably autistic.

In the same way, a lot of practical resources will assume that ID = moderate ID (since most mildly affected need no or minimal support, and severely/profoundly disabled ones are a small minority) so pay attention if you're looking at the right things. If it's talking about having a job, travelling alone, etc., then you got clickbaited.

Another subsection here will be comorbidities because there are a lot of them. I’ll mention the biggest ones.

Brain damage is the most common one (except autism) and can vary a lot. There is barely anything I can say about this one, it’s an enormous spectrum that for some people causes disability and for others barely affects their symptoms. Cerebral palsy, especially quadriplegic, is seen a lot and might affect the character’s mobility a lot. Some people might be unable to breathe or swallow and need a breathing or feeding tube.

Deafness and blindness are comorbid with a surprising amount of causes of ID. The thing is, you could take advice for deaf/blind characters as-in for a character that has both (e.g.) glaucoma and mild ID and not change much, but this doesn’t really work for a character who’s profoundly disabled like this. The situation that can happen here is that it’s not actually known if the person is or isn’t deaf or blind because they can’t tell you. As mentioned earlier, some people will have absent receptive communication skills. How do you verify if they’re deaf or just not reactive to language? Some people won’t react to even extremely loud sounds, even if they can hear them perfectly well (besides, a lot of deaf people can still hear some). Same for verifying if they are blind - obviously, sometimes there’s something visual going on, but often there isn’t. Especially since the main causes of both blindness and deafness will be brain-based, not ear- or eye-based. Another character not being sure if the disabled character is blind or just very uninterested in visual stimuli is a possibility, especially with less advanced medicine.  This is also why you might see those weird statistics of "between 5-90% of people with [condition] are deaf" kind.

Mobility is almost always severely affected. Some are fully mobile, but that’s simply not common. The average person will be unable to walk independently. It’s not always a muscle or nerve problem (though it absolutely can be), it’s mostly an issue of coordination. Because of this (and understanding physical space), operating a wheelchair (...successfully) might be impossible. This doesn’t mean you should just drop your character in a hospital wheelchair for them to get wheeled around because they will probably need a wheelchair that will actually support them - a headrest, ability to tilt, a harness, all that. This could be done with a powerchair (they can have controls on the back for a second person to operate), a manual wheelchair, or an adaptive stroller.

Now for resources;

One good resource I can recommend is SBSK (which I shared before), to my knowledge this is the only place that interviews severely and profoundly ID people (+their families) and the interviewer is great at actually interacting with many of them. 

Most resources on the practical things only ever talk about caregivers (who are very important) but completely ignore the actual person being cared for which IMO kinda defeats the point.

The Emperor, Airlar the Unifier, responsible for the greatest modifications to the constitution and State in the entire history of Ehyla, a living testimony to the existence of a civilization buried by the sands of time as well as oblivion, is irremediably, undeniably dying.

And so your life undergoes an absolute change overnight by nothing less than imperial decree. As the only one of your siblings of the right age, you are not only heading to a nest of conspiring vipers that you should never have dealt with, but every second, implicitly and explicitly, you are being judged and evaluated for a purpose that escapes your knowledge. Truth be told, at least it's not all bad; you have your very competent and loyal assistant at your side, and with your sister relatively close by, your experience shouldn't be so terrible...

Not only are you the product of a marriage of love, with the confidence of genuinely and willingly counting on the support of your brothers and older sister again, but also, well known for their almost barbaric customs, your parents have the audacity to allow you to decide what to do with your own life, from coveting and collecting knowledge to learning the art of war or venturing into any of the five arts, you have a place nothing less than privileged, so far from being the firstborn and with an older brother more than capable and willing to take charge of the kingdom, your future is, to say the least, very promising, until an edict of the dying, and extremely capricious emperor demands that every young people of marriageable age who is not taking charge of the administration of their jurisdiction at the time, must go to be evaluated at The Academy in the heart of the capital, with your first brother discarded, your older sister engaged, your second brother in the borderlands doing pilgrim work and your younger siblings too young to attend that leaves you alone as an option.

•The one who left (RO): Asterion/Astrya Dellamort. With silky midnight waves and expressive eyes that evoke the memory of the moon in their hue and roundness, they possesses an astonishingly delicate and pretty face, for someone who has been classified with little variation as a rigid, cold, arrogant, difficult and even bitchy person throughout their young life, Azzy, the nickname with which you baptized their and, unbeknownst to you no soul is allowed to use without going through severe verbal reprimands and/or public humiliation, was, at least until the age of 13, your best friend, with their mother being a strong ally, and more importantly, a supporter of your parents, it is no wonder that you two were brought together to be playmates since before you could remember.

Truth be told, Azzy was never easy, despite knowing you all their life there is something about you that bothers they deeply, they can trust your reasons, your transparency, but they can't understand your affection, because as the only child of the Queen, Azzy they was much more exposed and at a much younger age to the cruel machinations of politics, so, with an almost supernatural ease they developed a capacity with words as bewitching as it is deadly, cruel if you will even, not that you have witnessed it first hand, of course, for many complaints, frowns and playful reluctance, you probably have the rare honor of knowing and living with the kindest version of Azzy, which in turn gives you the merit of being the person who knows they the most and the least, being a witness to they gentleness but mostly ignorant of their cruelty.

It's not until a tragic occasion, when your relationship breaks down, abruptly, suddenly, with the roughness of a wound that hasn't healed properly even five years later, that you wonder why Azzy decided to cut off all contact with you, but, unbeknownst to you, they despises and belittles anyone who tries to gain their favor by putting you down.

Tropes: Friends (with the possibility of a friendly rivalry...or not) to "rivals" to lovers/ Attachment issues, let's say Azzy is fine keeping their distance, (they're not) but if you come back into their life there's no turning back/ The ice king/queen's weak point/ Misunderstandings/ Forced proximity.

The one who takes care of you (RO): Kaihlan/Karonthe Agrapolli. Strictly speaking, Kai is your bodyguard, but over the years they has taken on far more than their fair share of responsibilities, and no matter how much you and your parents have asked them not to overexert themselves, the satisfied gleam in their amber eyes whenever they do something to make your life easier, along with their unbeatable stubbornness, means that you can count on Kai as your shadow more often than not.

As the eldest of your father's right-hand twins, Kai has been two things to you: a constant and a teacher. With their undeniable combat skills and their minds as quick as their feet, it is not only an honor to have them defend you, but also teach you.

Kai is loyal to you to the core; in order to ensure your happiness and safety, they is capable of acts that go against morality and even the laws of man and god.

Kai is probably the tallest person you've ever met, so tall that when you were younger and cheeky you asked them if they weren't part giant, they laughed but otherwise didn't answer the question. With sun-kissed skin glowing a shade reminiscent of honey almost as much as their eyes Kai is not only tall, they're broad and rough, with large scarred hands that extend all the way to they forearms you'd expect they to behave like a bull in a china shop, and they do in a way, but when you're around them, they seem incapable of anything but the most dedicated and delicate care. Both M!Kai and F!Kai have hair brushing their shoulders in a fluffy reddish-brown mess, with the back of their necks longer than the front and scattered freckles from spending so much time in the sun.

Tropes: Puppy love/They look like they could kill you and potentially will if you're not MC, but they're actually a cinnamon roll, long-term crush, himbo/bimbo, surface only, gentle giant, wolf in sheep's clothing.

I want to tell you something about my friend Nader. He is a kind hearted young man. He doesn’t have to do any of this to be deserving of help, but I just want you to know who he is. He is a caring son to his father Ahmed and a loving uncle to his niece Iman. He spends all this time online campaigning for them because he loves his family and he wants to live. We all deserve to eat and live in peace. Nader’s family have the right to live, just as much as anyone born anywhere else in the world. Nader is the son of a father who is sick with cancer, who can’t access adequate treatment because the hospitals have been bombed. Remember this: the children of Gaza are children, just like your children or siblings and my cousins. The IOF drops bombs on them and starves them, and they’re just as scared as you would be if your parent was sick. I know that most of you understand this. Never let yourself forget that they’re more than a headline that tells you the number of people killed in today’s airstrike on Gaza.

Nader works hard to spread his family’s story every day, out of love for them. Nader is now, at 17 years old, the person bringing in money for his family. It’s a heavy responsibility on him.
