[crickets chirping] [Robin gasped as he woke, scrambling backwards through the brush; he was pretty sure by now that ghosts couldn’t hurt him, at least not directly, but this particular entity was still unknown-.. and very close] Robin: AH! ?: AHHH! [Seemingly just as surprised as he was, the startled sprit mimicked Robin’s exclamation] Robin: Sorry! ?: Thou see me-.. hear me?! Robin: Yeah.. that’s a good thing though, right? ?: ‘Tis certainly different. Robin: Wait, where are you going-.. what’s your name? Heath: Erm, ‘tis Heath-.. methinks. Robin: I’ve never seen you here before. Heath: I’ve seen thou-.. and that curious thing around thy neck. Robin: How long have you been, uh… Heath: Dead? Oh, a while. Robin: It’s a camera. Whatever you take a picture of will be captured just as you see it, forever-.. as long as the photo lasts anyway. Don’t ask me how it works though, ‘cause you wouldn’t believe me. [Heath squinted with simultaneous suspicion and bewilderment] Robin: Here’s one I took earlier-.. that weird orb thing there? That’s what you’d look like if I took a picture of you. I think because you’re not physically here anymore, you don’t show up, but I don’t know for sure. Heath: I’m not entirely certain what thou speak upon, yet it hath an air of witchcraft about it if thou bid me. [phone ringing] Robin: Hang on. Heath: I’m not e’en going to bid what that is. Robin: Sorry, mom.. I fell asleep. Courtney: Where are you? Robin: On the island-.. Devin said I could use the boat whenever. Courtney: [sighs] Can you just come home, please? Robin: Yeah, I’m coming. [Robin stared at his phone briefly before sticking it back in his pocket, he didn’t like phones at the best of times – being unable to read the person he was conversing with, even a little, felt inherently wrong – but this felt worse than usual] Robin: I’ve gotta go. Heath: Well, ‘tis not as though I be going anywhere-.. apparently. Robin: I’ll show you some more pictures next time, I promise! Heath: I suppose that’d be nice…

DETAILED DIALOGUE BELOW

Madison wakes up, instinctively, to the sound of one of the warehouse doors creaking open. She panics before logical overrides instinct. She’s gone through this before; staying at warehouses or other dingy spots. The dead were too inane to open doors but most of the time it wasn’t them who Madison feared. It’s not like before, though, and that she has to remind herself. She’s surrounded by people and fences. Nothing could happen outside without her waking up. Not with how light she sleeps these days.

Madison sits up, sleep swiftly dissolving from her bones as she stood up to locate the source of the noise. With being stationed on the warehouse’s second floor, she’s spared from the embarrassment of anyone seeing her panic. It’s over the balcony that she spots Heath before Heath spots her.

“Don’t be weird,” Heath calls out a moment later. Madison dispels her earlier thought. Her awakening probably wasn’t as quiet as she thought.

She finds Heath is friendly, but perhaps friendly isn’t the right word. She’s guarded in a way that goes completely unnoticed. Madison doesn’t notice until dwelling on their conversations later. Heath talks a lot and she’s blunt. She speaks her mind about everything, manners be damned, but Madison knows nothing of her, and yet somehow she makes Madison feel comfortable enough to not dodge question of her last name. She tells it. Brinleigh.

She won’t batter herself up over that slip later. What is she really hiding anyway? A last name means nothing.

“I’m heading out scavenging today,” Heath says before sneezing into her elbow. Madison tries not to look incredulous but naturally fails given her inability to look anything but serious.

“Allergies,” Heath explains away. “They won’t get better.” She sniffles. “Come with me. The spot I’m heading to is like right next to home.”

The suggestion dumb strikes Madison initially. She’s a stranger no one in this camp is pretending not to distrust, and Heath shows little sign of caring.

“Why? So I can be your bait if we encounter a horde?” Madison connects.

“Yeah,” Heath shoots back, snarky and in a well, duh tone. Madison is starting to realize she’s given her friendliness too much credit. “I’ll throw you off to the sharks first chance,” Heath jokes.

It’s more than what anyone else is offering, though, so Madison agrees anyway.
