Seeing this after I made this tweet a few days ago I’m giggling so bad

actually arthur conan doyle appeared to me at a seance and he said the only thing he hates more than sherlock holmes is transphobes

I remember reading the original Sherlock Holmes stories as a kid and thinking "I bet everybody called each other 'my dear' back in the day, this was just how people talked" and then as an adult subsequently read a bunch of other lit from the period and realized No The Fuck They Did Not

So this one time I was explaining TJLC to my partner and he said "But they're not gay in the original stories!'

I replied that there IS very much a queer reading of the Arthur Conan Dolye canon and he said "Well that's just an opinion."

I'm not sure what he thinks I studied on my 3 year English Literature BA (Hons) degree: a course that he also applied for.

But it was literature in English, and people's opinions on that exact same thing.

thinking about a holmes and watson that are exactly one century after the acd canon

born in 1952 and 1954 respectively, grew up in the 50’s/60’s, in their mid/late 20’s by the time the 80’s start. they meet in 1981 and everything goes from there

thinking about how that places them smack dab during the AIDS crisis

thinking about how if they were born in the 1950’s they’d now be 73 and 71 and get to be old and gay during the modern era and maybe they’d be able to be out and in love

realized a lot of people probably think sherlock holmes is some logical, melancholy, serious guy. like no he's not, he shook hands with a baby and once let a criminal go because it was christmas time

the problem with some sherlock holmes adaptations is that they try to make watson normal. people need to start embracing the fact that he too is a little freak
