there's this horrible school of attempted literary criticism on here that holds that 1. everything in any given author's work is autobiographical, especially if it seems "real" and 2. those themes seeped into the work subconsciously, revealing something about the author that they're either trying to hide or unaware of themself. it drives me up a wall, since it seems to deny the fundamental skills that make people good writers: the empathy to imagine and portray experiences that one hasn't had oneself and the ability to take one's personal emotional experiences or worldview and fold them, consciously, into the unworked clay of a narrative.

this may come off as nitpicky but please. even magic does not look like dragon age magic in veilguard. it's too sci-fi. where are all the dark mysterious ruins with runes and veilfire that make you wonder about what they once were. why am i suddenly removing force fields with lazers. (it came to me suddenly that you also can't tell at all by looking at the ruins in arlathan what these buildings used to be for. because surely it wasn't just to randomly store a chest or a sole bridge-summoning crystal). bellara is also a mechanic and not even a little bit mage now (see all the "tinkering"). and why does minrathous have a speaker system. surely there are ways to depict an oppressive magical state that do not require putting modern technology into your fantasy world. although i see how it may become a problem when you forget what even phylacteries are (you have to destroy lucanis's "blood" instead while breaking him out). and it does look flashy that all the companions have at least some kind of magical abilities and that magic is used creatively, however i'm sorry but thedas is also not that magical. in previous games even when warriors or rogues got special abilities, they were tied to them being unique to the character (eg fenris) and you still could have regular people in your party, most rogues/warriors that you would see fight have been regular people, and this makes the impression of the presence and use of magic in thedas drastically different from the previous games.
somehow the exaggerated design instead of realism has been less jarring for me than this storytelling emptiness of the design in the end. but buildings float now i guess

something I’d find funny is Mario being able to do all these cool maneuvers and trick shots with his go-karts and electric motorcycles but cannot FOR THE LIFE OF HIM ride a bicycle.

oohhhh my... when you recall how much physical affection Andrea made sure to show Oscar from the very earliest days (especially the one special hug in Australia 2023) when Oscar was clearly still feeling so new and dealing with the fact that he'd never be able to do what Daniel did and just slip into the void created by his predecessor - that he both wanted and needed to create a space for himself in the team bc he'd never be gregarious guy or have that easy physical and verbal affection with Lando (and not bc he can't when we saw in Prema he can! but kinda awkward when he's been this much of a fan of Lando's since they were both kids) but he also had an extra uphill battle in his predecessor being arguably one of the most popular and beloved drivers in modern F1 history… and that the many times Lando has soared while Oscar has quietly swallowed down his own disappointment (the added twist of both drivers being almost identical in age but with a huge gap of experience between them !) Andrea has taken special care to go to the boy and make sure he isn't alone and knows he's appreciated… (and that he makes sure to do on the occasions Lando is in that position as well !! bc no matter what certain fans and the media try to say, those are HIS sweet boys who he's raising and who adore him !!)
and then ^this photo^ from Melbourne where Oscar has clearly already taken moment to feel the disappointment and/or cry but then done his customary shower and a change into the team kit - not even the driver hat, he's wearing the all black that the rest of the team is - because if he hasn't gotten a podium, his favorite place is to blend in with everyone else on the team and Be There For Lando… and Andrea notices. he could be riding high with the rest of the team on what that race has proven for McLaren for the upcoming season and Lando sitting atop the WDC. it would be very easy to know that Oscar has his whole support system there and he'll be okay. but Andrea's eyes drop to Oscar, who's extended his contract at the first opportunity every time and who shows up for the team no matter what, and his big celebratory smile softens bc his big Italian heart is so proud of both his boys at that moment in two different ways, and for Oscar it's a quiet deep pride because where Lando sparkles, Oscar glows and jfc I'm a fucking mess sorry !!!

tr!Bad: “The reasons don’t matter. I highly doubt everyone will come together, sing kumbaya and join green… but! It’s the perfect excuse to [laughs menacingly] go to war :)
No matter what, I win! If everybody says ‘We would rather die than join green!’ Okay, then die! If everybody says ‘We would love to join green,’ then awesome! That just sets up my next thing perfectly~ everything is working out for me.”

sidenote I love that Jester speaks from an informed voice about orgies and how they function, and also that when observing a group of people going into a back room at the Leaky Tap asks quite seriously if they're leaving to have an orgy, because genuinely at the Lavish Chateau this is what she might have observed lol

Capitol had the resources to make the lives of poorer districts better but instead they decided to splurge it all on game arenas to kill children.
Now think about this irl context. Truth always is stranger than fiction.

I find it a bit interesting how other people imagine what a Dusknoir’s mouth actually has. Some treat it like a void of infinite space, some treat it like an actual mouth, like with a tongue and such, and I think it’s interesting how many different interpretations there are. An odd subject matter, but each interpretation is valid in its own way.
If you were curious, I personally see it as a dry, entirely hollow pocket in their body for storing souls (and perhaps their children), but also with a dense dark mist inside (look at Dusknoir’s attack animations, there’s nothing but blackness when it opens its mouth) that just….. absorbs actual food almost instantly, only taking what the body recognises as food while leaving ferrying souls(?) and possible kids alone. We’ve all got our own theories, headcanons, and interpretations, and I like seeing how they differ.
MHM!! It is genuinely so much fun to see the different interpretations for it. Especially considering all the Pokédex entries up until Shield that kinda flip the ‘gentle grim reaper’ thing on its head. Something I’ve sorta head-cannoned is that there are different variations of Gripper Pokémon depending on whether or not they ferry souls or just. Straight up eat people. (Void maw/Maw with actual tongue to paralyze n eat prey)
I do love the idea that the shield dex is a misconception about ghost-types being terrifying, and giving Dusknoirs’ bad rep. But I also believe that there would be a rare few who are just. Kind of unhinged like that and very dangerous. (Like my variant of pmdusknoir) Sometimes a ghost-type will Fucking Get You. And Dusknoir knows that better than anyone. (hence his overprotective streak, especiallyyyy in ghost-type dungeons)

Ooooh, that was some GOOD STUFF
I will OWN my bullshit, I was drinking that "Santos is a bully / not a team player" juice for weeks now. When they pulled the "hold the mirror up to the audience" moment where Langdon lists all the same arguments we were making about Santos, those justifications came across as so weak and petty:
"She's cherry picking cases, she gave Whittaker a shitty nickname, she's not a team player." My God, they really spent the whole episode preparing audiences, too, like: "sometimes the bad guy really is the shitty white man, I don't know what to tell you."
The best moment was having Robby learn from McKay that he has a responsibility to protect the women on the list, not just the one hurt kid aauggh!!!! I knew from the start of this episode that we were in the turn and Langdon was going down because they were framing him differently, but boy did they pull it off without letting any of us who got caught up in Santos ick off the hook.
In my theorizing last week, I had worried that if Santos WAS right, no one would believe her due to Langdon being a favorite white boy(tm), but it's so much better.
Did I want Santos to be right? Not really. I don't enjoy when characters who go maverick by breaking safety rules win. I've never enjoyed that. But, that's not what she did here in this storyline. And I spent this past week rewatching the earlier episodes and trying for the life of me to figure out how they got so many of us--myself included-- to dislike Santos so powerfully. Bad news? They didn't work very hard! The writers put in just enough unlikable moments to tilt us in that direction watching week to week, but when you put her actions all together in a big string, the distaste feels wholly unjustified.
For example, when you put her patiently helping Whittaker with his finger next to her giving him a "rude" nickname, it suddenly comes across as her attempt to be compatriots, not an attempt to be a dick.
I think the wildest thing is that Langdon wasn't even in my top 8: (Mel, Dana, Collins, Robby, Mateo, McKay, Whittaker, Mohan), and we saw him be consistently nice to one person we enjoyed (Mel), and we ignored how many of the women in the department made comments about him being a dick / inconsiderate / full of himself.
And yes, Santos can be more than one thing (edit: and so can Langdon! I'd be satisfied if this was the end of his arc, but would not be mad if it wasn't), and we might be allowed to dislike aspects of Santos's approach or personality, but the writers knew they could get us to dislike her with very little effort. And the writers knew they could get us to like Langdon with very little effort. And if one day they asked "how did the neighbors not know" or "he was always so nice to me" well. . . Boom. They got us. Well, not all of us. Flowers to the believers.
(Sidenote: The skill for the show to never feel like it purposefully mislead us. Like, I'm not even mad, I'm thrilled! I would so enjoy for Santos, Mel, and Whittaker to become closer now, but I have a bad feeling this will only isolate Santos further.)
