Skyfall: Timeline of Thegns - New Skies

Aaand to the present/parallel to canon material! Names in brackets are who I intend to become the next leader of that shire in Skyfall. I removed/swapped some leaders who I felt could be replaced by another character for a more compelling story.

hello (one of the) resident phannie data analyst(s) here with some parasocial stats on dnp’s movie tastes! following: distribution of dan and phil's ratings overall, movies they each rated 5 stars, their lowest-rated movies, and the similarities + differences in their tastes

(lore moment: yes i am a data analyst in my real job. yes i surprised myself with wanting to do this in my spare time. but then i remembered when we read dracula in college (yes i was an english major) and i graphed like, how many times dracula was referred to as vampire versus monster or something. so i shouldn’t be surprised.

first up, their overall rating patterns and by ~special status~ (i.e., wall-e, kill bill, avatar, lmao, plus big hero 6 for the fun of it)

dan’s rated 304 movies and phil’s rated 305. both of them have mean and median ratings of 4 with min 1 and max 5.

both rated kill bill vols. 1 and 2 a 5. wall-e got a 4.5 from dan and a 4 from phil (phake phans). both gave avatar a 3.5. and big hero 6 3.5 (dan) and 4.5 (phil)

Skyrim Setup for 2022.

A few changes for this year’s mix of mods in my load order.

I removed a couple of big quest mods like Beyond Reach and Angrim’s apprentice after play testing them enough to decide they didn’t fit well in my setup anymore.

I added several customizations of existing locales like a brand new Rorikstead, Capital Windhelm Expansion, several Great Cities of Skyrim and JK Overhauls (that I had to merge to save room), and new locations from Arena as well as Hold Borders. All this to increase diversity and keep the game interesting. it took some work to sometimes edit them and move things around to make them work well together but it was worth it.

I also reduced the footprint of SexLab mods and removed mods like SexLab Solutions or SexLab Release to balance the amount of scenes during gameplay.

The biggest changes in the past year are not well reflected in the load order itself. They are about creating a grittier, more cinematic feel to the game with a combination of ENB and ReShade, and a small, experimental mod adding seasonal weathers.

What is Skyfall?

SkyFall is an Original storyline I created back in 2013. It’s a Fantasy/Adventure Genre with Horror and RPG elements.

SkyFall is based around the Modern era, Yet the actual Volitare Insulam (The name of the group of Islands), which means ‘Floating Islands’ in Latin.

SkyFall touches base on a lot of different cultures, people, as well as mental and physical differences.

With a lot of Unique characters, a brand new Species and Subspecies, and a spice of comedy, I hope to make SkyFall not only a comic series, but an eventual 3D game as well :)

It has been an 8 year progress thus far, and really all thats left to do is complete the story line and all the character lore. It’s a project that no matter how much I try, It never fails to enter my mind.

intentional or not the songs feel/themes/etc kinda carry the weight of a conversation between two people in the wake up the end of a relationship one that didn't grow, became toxic or simply failed which mirrors people's view of the OLD Bond which is cool time waits for no one

 For this is the end I've drowned and dreamed this moment So overdue I owe them Swept away, I'm stolen like two people not yet at catharsis but knowing its coming (Skyfall)

I could simply be projecting or reading too deep but story telling in songs is common, Bond is a LONG running franchise with a singular canon/lore (even if loosely tied together between films) there is little reason to think that these two Opening Themes aren't ya know- a breakup

skyfall was probably the best Bond film, it was a crescendo of facing one's mortality when staring down YEARS of aging beliefs that no longer serve you or the world Specter being viewed one of the most MEH is "what happens when you refuse to adapt/change with time" you fall flat

so for the feminine and awareness of skyfall’s "initiation of the break up" vs the masculine pleading to stay/hold on in wake of it all, thinking GRAND gestures of the same, vs LEGIT growth/change will save things is a testament to whats faced with feminism in bond going forward the future Bond films being a departure from what is 60 years of "the same" is a sign that the feminine won out, time moved forward, relics from the cold war no longer romanticized. We can look back in awe at what once worked with nostalgia but still move forward to a new future

Skyfall: Timeline of Thegns — The Founding

I’ll expand on this later, but in Skyfall, the leader is now called an Thegn, a title derived from the Old/Middle English.

Brief notes:

THUNDERSHIRE: Founded by Thunder, who is known as Roaring Thunder by most modern shire cats. The first 3 thegns were all alive in the time of the Roaring Thunder. Cherryheart is the first thegn of any clowder to use a combined name rather than a separated one.

SHADOWSHIRE: Founded by Tall Shadow. The first 3 thegn were alive during the era of Tall Shadow. Hollythorn is Hollystar from COTC.

RIVERSHIRE: Founded by River Ripple. The first 2 thegns were alive during the time of the founding of the shire. The second leader, Night, is more commonly known as Dark Night by modern clowder cats. Dove Whisker is Dovestar, a leader mentioned by Leafpool in COTC. Ember Glow is Emberstar from COTC.

WINDSHIRE: Founded by Wind Runner. The first 2 thegns were alive during the time of the founding. Dust Fur is Duststar from COTC.

SKYSHIRE: Founded by Clear Sky. The first 3 thegns were alive at the time of the founding.

Skyfall: Timeline of Thegns - The Song of Stars

The Song of Stars is an era of peace for the shires, with a few exceptions. The final laws of the Shire Code are established during this period as are many of the ceremonies, holidays, and religious festivals, hence the name of the era.

Notes:

Law #8 is established under Boulderstrike, Smokefur, Ospreyclaw, Feathersong, and Maplewhisker. This is the Law of Ascension.

Law #9 is established under Graystorm, Flowerstem, Fogwhisper, Acorntail, and Maplewhisker. This is the Law of the Moon.

Law #10 is established under Finchswoop, Marshscar, Reedslash, Dovefur, and Hawktalon. This is the Law of the Truce.

Law #11 is established under Lionfang, Beetleshell, Ivycurl, Fallowbreeze, and Rowanleaf. This is the Law of Patrols.

Law #12 is established under Vinetail, Yellowshine, Ivycurl, Fallowbreeze, and Darkfang. This is the Law of Protection.

Skyfall: Timeline of Thegns - The Code Building Era

The Code Building Era is the period of time during which the Shire Code is established and many of it’s laws are put in place. Not all laws are made during this period, but many of the fundamental ones are. (The Shire Code is largely the same as the canonical Warrior Code, but a post will be made later with the whole thing)

Brief Notes:

The code is founded under the leaderships of Whitefrost, Hollythorn, Ember Glow, Dust Fur, and Birch Stripe. This first law is the Law of Loyalty.

Law #2 is made official under Whitefrost, Brindlepelt, Ember Glow, Stonetail, and Birch Stripe. This is the Law of Territory.

Law #3 is put into place under Barkstripe, Lilyfrost, Splashheart, Hazelbranch, and Nettlenose. This is the Law of Prey.

Law #4 is made under the same set of thegns as #3, which the exception of Nettlenose, who has been succeeded by Mothtail. This is the Law of Thanks.

The Mortician

The mortician is in charge of caring for the dead in the shire. They prepare bodies for burial, select appropriate burial locations, and comfort the family and friends of the deceased alongside the priest. They are the key part of the burial ceremony and associated rituals.

Most of the time, the mortician doubles with another role within the shire. The roles of the mortician are not all consuming, and therefore any of them select to have additional jobs. Most of the time, they are are artisans in addition to being morticians. This is largely because the mortician by nature should be near-ish to the core camp in case their services are needed.

Hunters

Hunters, or hunting churls, are the equivalent to warriors in canon WC. They hunt for the shire, hence their name, and are also generally the best trained in combat. Patrols are usually made of at least half hunters so that no patrol goes into the territory unprotected.

Hunter is the default churl position for apprentices who have no strong opinion on what path they wish to take.

The Physician

The physician is the doctor of the shire. They care for all cats within their group, and in the case of some shires, outsiders that require medical care. The physician also provides birth and post-birth care to expectant cats and helps the caregivers monitor the health of new kittens. The physician regularly checks in on the elderly as well.

Alongside their healing duties, the physician gathers medicinal materials on and off the territory. This is often done with the help of the roamers, especially for materials that are found off the territory. These materials include herbs, mosses, blankets, and any other item that could help the physician care for the shire.

Unlike canon WC, the physician is not a spiritual position. The spiritual piece of the canonical medicine cat role is held by the priest. Also, in a change to canon, physicians are not necessarily banned from having a mate or kittens. Depending on the situation and shire it may be considered taboo, but it is not banned.

The Reeve

*As a note, since it will be relevant in this post: the “Guild” is the council of senior warriors and other higher ranks within the shire. Each churl rank has a “Master Churl”, who is the representative to the Guild. Other Guild members include the Physician, Priest, Mortician, and Scribe (these four ranks are collectively called the “Guilders”), as well as the Thegn and Reeve.*

The reeve is the second in command in the shire, serving as the equivalent of the canon WC deputy. The reeve plans patrols, assesses apprentices for their graduation to churlhood, and pairs new apprentices to mentors (all with the oversight of the thegn). When the thegn is unavailable, the reeve acts as the temporary thegn. In the event of the thegn’s death, the reeve is next in line and becomes the new thegn. 

The path to becoming reeve varies from shire to shire. In some shires, any cat could rise to become thegn, while others limit the privilege to a few, select cats. The Shire Code only lists two requirements for reeves that all shires follow: 1) the new reeve must have trained an apprentice and 2) a new reeve must be selected by the midnight after the death or retirement of the previous reeve. The details for becoming reeve by shire are listed below:

Thundershire

In Thundershire, any cat could become the reeve. Thundershire picks a deputy in the same way that the clans do in canon WC. The thegn selects a reeve from among the churls, typically basing their decision on temperament and merit for the position. The churl’s job and rank is theoretically irrelevant, however, guild members (the master churls) are far more likely to be selected than normal churls.

Shadowshire

Shadowshire is a monarchy. The eldest kitten of the thegn is automatically next in line for reeveship. If no royal kit is old enough to inherit, or has not trained an apprentice yet, a temporary reeve is selected from among the kin of the thegn. Kin that do not live in Shadowshire do not have a claim to the thegnship. Once a royal kit has met the Shire Code requirements, they are elevated to reeve in a ceremony where the previous reeve passes their responsibility to the heir. Most of the time, this occurs without issue.

Rivershire

Rivershire allows their guild to select the next reeve. All guild members have a vote, with the thegn’s vote counting twice. Voting proceeds until the guild can come to a conclusive decision. The thegn and all but one guilder must be in agreement. Additionally, a majority of the master churls must agree as well. In human math terms, this means that a minimum of 7 out of 10 of the remaining guild members must agree on a reeve candidate. The reeve, typically a guild member, is not included in this count. This is because they are either dead or if they are retiring, they are removed from the guild vote so that they cannot hand-pick a successor. In theory, this voting method could result in any cat becoming the reeve. But in practice, this method usually results in one of the guild members becoming the reeve.

Windshire

Windshire follows a divine-right tanistry-esque system. The priest selects the new reeve from among the immediate kin of the current leader who meet the Shire Code requirements. If none exist, then they select another cat until a royal kin member can meet the requirements. The royal kin in Windshire only extends out 2 generations in each direction (grandparents to grandkits), as well as out to 1st cousins of the current thegn. Any other kin member is not a candidate for reeveship.

Modern Skyshire

In modern Skyshire, all churls and elders have a say in the selection of the new reeve. The clan holds a vote where all adults get one vote. Cats who meet the requirements and wish to be reeve make a short speech to the collected cats, who then vote. Voting continues until a candidate has been selected by majority, including a vote from the thegn and priest. The mediator and scribe oversee the voting. The mediator helps facilitate discussions and speeches while the scribe, as the only cat with significant counting skills in the shire, tracks the vote and declares a winner at the end. Cats running for reeve can vote, but the mediator and scribe cannot.

Old Skyshire

In old Skyshire, the Master Hunter was next in line for the reeveship. Within Skyshire, unlike the other shires, the thegn selects the Master Churls. Due to this quirk, this makes the old Skyshire system very similar to Thundershire’s, just one rank down and with only hunters having a chance to be reeve and then thegn.

The Skyfall is the period during which intrusions into Skyclaw Shire territory reached their peak, eventually causing the shire to leave the forest altogether under Cloudstorm. The era continues as the shires adjusted to life as 4 instead of 5, ending with the perhaps coincidental falling of the 5th Oak of the Gathering Hollow and the dissolution of Skyclaw Shire in the gorge.

The Skyclaw's lived on among the Forest Four through Cloudstorm's kits who were adopted into the Shadoweyes alongside their mother when the shire left.

Skyfall: Shire Cultural Traits

Some of the things that make the shires unique from one another. This is not an extensive list, but provides a decent idea of the ideals and traditions that each shire values.

Thunderheart Shire:

Most militaristic of the remaining four shires

Reeves are nearly always Hunters

Place a lot of emphasis on honor in battle. Thunderhearts value fairness on the battlefield and do not take kindly to dishonorable behavior. If a warrior fights a young cat or apprentice knowingly they will be punished. Killing in battle is also very harshly punished— even more so than in other shires.

Sparring is a commonly used method for settling disputes

While not a rule, an apprentice of the thegn is most likely to become reeve and then thegn themselves. Leadership is rigged in some capacity. Thegn’s will specifically take on apprentices with leadership potential and tend to favor them when selecting a reeve.

Scars are seen as beauty marks. The more scars, the more near-death experiences or battles a cat has endured. This is seen as a sign of bravery, a highly valued trait in the shire

The Thunderhearts have a special rank called the Trail Builder that is responsible for creating and maintaining pathways in their densely forested territory

Shadoweye Shire:

Following the reign of Brokentail, the famine and plague under Nightpelt, and the tyranny of Tigerclaw, most of the Shadoweyes stopped actively worshipping the Stars. As such, they are the least pious modern shire and many of them are not religious at all

Many Shadoweyes wear small accessories, most often made of skin, leather, bone, and feathers. Many Shadoweyes wear leather patches over scrapes and tears to prevent infection from the sitting water in their territory. They use leather so often that one of their artisans has the special title of the Tanner

The Shadoweyes generally have the best relationship with outsiders and often bring rogues and loners into their midst. They have good trading relations with local cat groups. Some Shadoweyes have even learned to communicate with dogs.

The Shadoweyes leadership style is a monarchy based in primogeniture. The eldest of the Thegn’s kittens is the heir. They will become reeve after training their first apprentice and will become thegn when their parent passes. In the event that a thegn has no kittens, the eldest living sibling or cousin becomes thegn.

Windpaw Shire:

The Windpaws are extremely pious. The Priest plays an especially important role in this shire and performs most rituals alongside the Thegn.

Daily prayers to the Stars are said at sunrise and sunset.

All Windpaw kittens are given their first names by the Priest rather than their parents

The Priest names the next Reeve from among the close relatives of the current Thegn.

The Windpaw Roamers are the farthest travelled and thus have the best knowledge of the lands beyond the Shire territories. They are the best acquainted with cats to the north of the Shirelands.

The Windpaws are the only shire that hunt underground and have the special tunneler rank to go along with this strategy

Despite their acquaintance with cats outside their shire, the Windpaws are the most closed off. They do not typically allow adult outsiders to join their ranks and will only allow outsider kittens on most occasions. Any cat who joins must accept the Stars as their faith.

To reject the Stars is considered a serious offense in the shire and depending on the Thegn could result in exile.

All Windpaw cats receive some medical training as apprentices. This is so if there is a minor injury or illness while out on the vast territory, the injured can be treated or stabilized while the physician makes their way to their location

Rivertail Shire:

Apprentices are trained communally for much of their apprenticeship. This allows apprentices to get to know each other and their fellows better. This is especially relevant for the point below:

Rivertail churls are split into patrolling groups (just called “patrols”). These groups are usually 3-4 cats and they will go on every patrol and into every battle as a unit. More often than not, patrols are formed of apprentices who trained together or if there are few apprentices in the same age group they are added to the patrol of their mentor. Patrols are a mix of roles since all roles patrol in some capacity. Only hunting, which is typically only undertaken by Hunters, is done outside the patrol unit. Many patrols even share dens rather than share with their blood families as is typical in other shires

Rivertails are known for their excellent craftsmanship. They are known to produce intricate accessories, especially woven and carved.

Carved wooden fish are given to kittens by their parents when they graduate to apprenticeship. These are kept in the cat’s nest alongside other trinkets they are gifted by friends or other objects they find out and about. If a kitten is parentless, the elders or another relative often produce the fish for the kitten.

If a parent refuses to give their kitten a wooden fish it is considered an act of disowning and is extremely disrespectful.

A carved tail band is given to new churls by their mentors when they graduate from apprenticeship. These bands have symbols specific to the patrol the cat will be joining and/or their rank

A silent meditation is lead by the Priest every sunset. This was a tradition introduced by River Ripple, the shire founder

Rivertail roamers sometimes make journeys to the ocean (which is much closer than in Warrior Cats canon)

The Rivertails have a special rank called the Sentinel. These cats are trained in weather patterns and can recognize the signs of an oncoming flood so the shire can prepare and evacuate in time

Rivertail Reeves are selected by the Master Churls, usually from among their own number.

Modern Skyclaw Shire:

The modern Skyclaws are easily the most democratic of the shires. Nearly all important decisions are made as a community and the Reeve is elected by the shire.

The Skyclaws have a special rank named the mediator who leads the shire in voting and is responsible for the overall emotional well being of the shire

The Skyclaws are the only shire to allow outsider cats to live among them part time. House-cats are allowed the join the shire as Daylight Churls. These cats participate in shire activities during the day and return to their homes at night. This is less common at the Lake but was very common at the Gorge territory.

The Skyclaws do not worship the Stars and instead worship the Skypelt, a separate group of their own ancestors. This has been the case since the other shires drove the Skyclaws from the forest. The exiled Skyclaws turned their backs on the Stars and decided to only follow the spirits of those who had not wronged them.

The Skyclaws speak a slightly different dialect than the other shires due their time at the Gorge.

The Skyclaws are the most likely to offer help and shelter to outsider cats in need

Ancient Skyclaw Shire:

The Ancient Skyclaws were the most militaristic shire prior to their exile

The Master Hunter automatically became the Reeve when the previous Reeve died, retired, or was otherwise stripped of their position.

They had a special rank called the Scout. Scouts served as an ambush patrol at the front of Skyclaw battles. They functioned as a team and were well known for their silence and ferocity.

The Skyclaws trained their apprentices slightly longer than others, extending their training to around 8 months long rather than 6. This is so the cat could adjust and become confident in their own paws on rocky, dangerous territory

The Skyclaws were by far the most territorial. They defended their territory to a degree that was seen as excessive by most other shire cats. This often got them in trouble with their neighbors: the Thunderhearts and the Rivertails.

Skyfall: Timeline of Thegns - Strong as the Oaks

Strong as the Oaks is the era where the clans recover and adapt to a forest with four rather than five clans. Fourtrees is renamed during this time to, well, Fourtrees. Overall it is a peaceful time with no major conflicts.

(I’ll flesh this one out more eventually— I really just needed a long gap between Skyfall and the canonical leaders so that the cats could realistically forget about Sky existing)
