Wip Wednesday: Insult to Injury - Chapter VII

a/n: Chapter VII is very close to being done, hope to get there by the end of the month!

“James Bond,” said Safin. “Universal Exports.” The man wasn’t as amicable as he had been a moment ago. No doubt he was used to leading the conversations on the back of charisma alone. “You still work for the English?”

“For Queen and country. Beats a desk job.” 007 studied him. “Zahov, isn it?”

Safin exhaled in a plume of steam. “Our business was settled.”

“We were never formally introduced,” 007 said. “I thought this would be prudent.”

Introduction

Hello there and welcome to another episode of my blog that looks at the musical tastes of James Bond over the last 60 years the last episode looked at the Bond films that I don’t like for viarous reasons this chapter continues that trend.

 This also looks at a few of the Bond themes that took some getting used to plus the one Bond theme I really can’t stand.

Are there any James Bond Songs I don’t like ?

On first hearing Madonna’s title track for the Perice Brosnan Bond film Die Another day I hated it I think it was because it tried to do something different with the Bond format it was the first time I heard a Bond song that was aimed at the dance genre but it has since grown on me thanks to repeated listening.

The film itself is also very good if a little unrealestic in places with the the use of CGI  the kite surfing sequence being the worst offender Toby Stevens is excellant as the baddie of the film.

The two Bond girls in the film are very good as well Rosamand Pike as Miranda Frost and Hallie Berry Both were featured in recent articles about James Bond Movieweb made Miranda Frost one of there Deadliest Women of the James Bond Franchise coming in at number at Number 4

“I know all about you, 007. Sex for dinner, death for breakfast. Well, it's not going to work with me.”

Played by British actress Rosamund Pike, Miranda Frost is an Olympic fencer and a Secret Intelligence Service (SIS/MI6) agent who is actually working for the diamond tycoon Gustav Graves. When Bond (Brosnan) is tasked with eliminating a North Korean colonel, Miranda reveals his identity and motives to the latter’s right hand, which leads to his long-term capture.

When Bond later faces both Graves and Miranda, he realizes that his gun was emptied by her when they were in bed together. In the end, the arrogant femme fatale is killed by Bond’s ally, the American operative Jinx Johnson (Halle Berry), in a memorable sword duel.

Jinx Johnson (Halle Berry) meanwhile came in at number 11 in the Colider film website of the 16 Bond women that redefined the Bond Franchise.

Jinx Johnson – ‘Die Another Day’ (2002)

The final installment of Pierce Brosnan’s Bond films didn’t do a hell of a lot right. The story and tone were unbalanced, the action largely missed its mark, and – considering the other spy movies of its time – it undermined the franchise’s history of cinematic relevance. One thing that did work for it was Halle Berry’s Giacinta “Jinx” Johnson.

The NSA agent is tasked with assassinating rogue a North Korean agent and works closely with Bond to accomplish the mission. A tough and resourceful operative who matches Bond’s flare for personal vendettas, she excels as one of the franchise’s most empowering women and even manages to pay homage to Ursula Andress’ original Bond Girl in the process.

Q Branch

Die Another Day marked the James Bond franchise's 40th anniversary. So quite if not all of the gadgets from the prevous James Bonds appear in the Q Branch scene in the film

Its such a shame then the Desmond Lewelyn died shortly after making the world is not enough I would love to have seen him in this. John Cleese who had been introduced as R in that film became the new Q a lot of R comedic excesses of the World is not enough have gone as he takes his job as the new Q more seriously

I love the way John Clease channels Desmond Lewelyn when Perice Brosnon makes Jokes about the invisable car as I learn’t from my predecessor Mr Bond I never Joke about my work perfectly delivered by Clease and a line said by Q in the classic James Bond film Goldfinger more on that film later.

Gadgets introduced in Die another Day include :

Single digit sonic agitator

A "standard issue" ring for the finger which is actually an "ultra high-frequency single digit sonic agitator unit" that can shatter bullet-proof glass (or any " 'unbreakable' glass", as commented by Q in the movie) or disable another person.[9]

Omega Seamaster Wristwatch

Omega Seamaster 300M Chronometer - Contains an explosive detonator and laser beam cutter. The new Q states that this watch is Bond's 20th, which is a reference to the fact that Die Another Day is the 20th James Bond film.

Dream simulator

Gustav Graves uses this device to have dreams as he has insomnia.[90]

By far the best Gadget in Die another Day is the Aston Martin Vanquish which Q Branch has nicnamed the vanish because of its talent to turn invisible this car with all its toys came 2nd in Den of the Geeks top 10 gadgets featured in the James Bond films behind tha rocket pack

2. The Invisible Car

Back to Bond’s his for cars. If a submarine vehicle wasn’t enough, Die Another Day saw the character step into an invisible car; state of the art technology that the real-world still hasn’t managed to master. This was a moment of pure spy fantasy that thrilled moviegoers worldwide in its concept, although perhaps took some out of the experience because of its use of CGI.

Regardless, is there anything more Bond than a car that produces imagery based on adaptive camouflage, allowing the vehicle to blend into its environment and resulting in an action-packed snowy car chase? Well in fact, the only thing that could make this more 007 heavy is the brand of the car in question. The movie used a British Aston Martin V12 Vanquish for the sequence, playing heavily into a tradition that’s been maintained throughout the franchise. Cloaking device technology is still in development in reality, and right now they aren’t being pulled off quite in the same way as Her Majesty’s Secret Service managed to onscreen. Still, this makes for a memorable entry both for better and perhaps worse but has ranked so highly because of how it pushed the boundaries of the series.

Writing on the Wall Spectre Sam Smith

I can also remember not liking Sam Smiths Writing on the Wall the title track for Daniel Craig’s Bond film Spectre on first listen but I love that too now.

the single became the first Bond movie theme to reach number one in the UK Singles Chart.The song won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards[8] and the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 88th Academy Awards, making it the second consecutive Bond theme to win (after "Skyfall" by Adele in 2012).

I may like the song now but I still hate the film ha ha

Anyway back to the original question the only James Bond song I don’t like Another  way to Die from Daniel Craigs second Bond film Quauntum of Solace sung by Jack White and Alicia keys I am not really a big fan of the film either for me it was released too soon after Daniel Craig’s debut as Bond Casino Royale (which I loved)  the story in the film feels a bit rushed which makes it for me hard to follow the fact that the film was taking place during a writers strike might have something to do with it lol

You bite your lip “what kind of deal?”

”Ill continue to help Charlie and her little passion project, in exchange,  Ill give you my soul. Just break my current deal and grant me my full power.” 

You gawked at him shocked “A-Alastor…I..I cant” you began to pull away from him, but he held you fast. His eyes were wild and smile tense 

”But you can! Think about it. Ill do whatever you say, be at your complete disposal. All you have to do my dear is allow me my full power.”

You bit your lip, looking away from him “What makes you think I can do such a thing?”

Alastor hooked his finger under your chin, turning your head to meet his gaze ”Because you’ll do anything to protect your family”

He leaned down to press a soft kiss to your lips.

“Do we have a deal?”

His smile almost broke his face

hello (one of the) resident phannie data analyst(s) here with some parasocial stats on dnp’s movie tastes! following: distribution of dan and phil's ratings overall, movies they each rated 5 stars, their lowest-rated movies, and the similarities + differences in their tastes

(lore moment: yes i am a data analyst in my real job. yes i surprised myself with wanting to do this in my spare time. but then i remembered when we read dracula in college (yes i was an english major) and i graphed like, how many times dracula was referred to as vampire versus monster or something. so i shouldn’t be surprised.

first up, their overall rating patterns and by ~special status~ (i.e., wall-e, kill bill, avatar, lmao, plus big hero 6 for the fun of it)

dan’s rated 304 movies and phil’s rated 305. both of them have mean and median ratings of 4 with min 1 and max 5.

both rated kill bill vols. 1 and 2 a 5. wall-e got a 4.5 from dan and a 4 from phil (phake phans). both gave avatar a 3.5. and big hero 6 3.5 (dan) and 4.5 (phil)

i did analyses here by genre but i need to fix the output (i’m writing all of these based on the markdown document from my phone on the subway, but i need to fix the outputs and i don’t have my computer. so those are pending but there are other genre analyses that i could do & haven’t yet!)

Skyfall: All things End

@leighsartworks216 @comatosebunny09 seeing you guys being angsty rubbed off on me, so I'll thank you for inspiring this mess of an idea. So, I was listening to Skyfall on loop cause it reminded me of the spoilers I've seen about Sylus' myth, and because I've been reading angst lately:

Mc has been reborn, but her memories went to someone else, that someone else is... well, you.

You've always been creative as a child, great at telling stories and even better at singing thanks to your family. You've dreamt about those moments since you were 12, always thinking those were just dreams, leftover from your wild imagination, even if they crushed your soul in the process with how vivid and realistic they were.

You grow up to become an actor, singer and songwriter. The songs are filled with themes of mystery, violence, fantasy, obsession and references to a forbidden love that ends much too soon after the death of a lover. The details change, but the story is always the same.

A woman, reborn time and time again, sometimes powerful and feared, others afraid but determined, many variations that lead to the same outcome: she encounters a man. He's the opposite of what she is or stands for, born as each others enemy. Sometimes it starts rough, both at each other's necks, sometimes it's just one of them who wants to kill while the other is simply entertained by the attempts. There's times when she'll be afraid of him, but will still stand her ground, others where he's her subject, even if under a leash.

On each one, they learn and become stronger, reaching the same level of power and growing comfortable with each other, only for it to be all ripped away.

Sometimes he dies, sometimes it's her.

You've started to gain traction after your last album. The songs are a little bit more hopeful and empowering, but they still carry the hints to the pain. You're in the middle of an interview, talking about your inspiration when you talk about your dreams. You mention considering the idea of making an album for a movie centered on the dreams, how you've gone back on your dream journals to organize everything and the fact that you're halfway through.

The interview ends with you talking about who you would like to cast for the male lead, if the choice was on your hands, and that's when you mention the man. You give chopped up features, mentioning how you've never fully remembered his face, only his voice and height. You end up describing the up and coming actor named Sylus without being aware of it.

The internet goes crazy with it.

They keep mentioning it even after your tour and next thing you know, it's no longer an idea, but a full sized project. Of course, Sylus said yes– or his manager did, who knows– and when you meet him, your world shifts on its axis. It's him, the man you've been dreaming of, the voice in your dreams you started using in your head to encourage yourself. He's real and alive.

You have no time to recollect and center yourself as he approaches along with his manager. You recognize her too, she's the woman you've seeing in your dreams. Great to finally meet the lovers, you think bitterly.

You're tense and jumpy, but you manage– through internal screams and tears, but you manage. He offers nothing to you as both of you read the script and exchange comments on scenes, and the concoction of emotions inside of you leave a sour taste in your mouth.

Does he remember? Doesn't he suspect you? Their past lives are detailed in that script, and somehow you know every detail without being her. Does he know you're the one who wrote the script? He has to, that part of the interview was the most popular, it made rounds on the internet for a while.

Why won't he say anything?

You feel more conflicted each time you see them interact, and it's even worse after you and Sylus start getting closer and comfortable with each other. Bitterness, happiness, sadness, hope, dread. Those are the emotions that you stew in. You use them to write on restless nights, songs filled with despair and yearning alike. It's harder to keep the facade the longer you go.

You don't explode, that would be a lie, you simply break during a particular scene. You can still tell between reality and fiction, but your heart doesn't. When you're acting the scene in which you loose him, holding him in your arms as you wail, you bring everyone to tears with you.

Everyone congratulates you after the scene.

"Your acting was great," says a background actor.

"That scene will surely get you an award," whispers your manager.

"It gave me full body chills!"

You smile and say your thanks, try to be humble even through the numbness of it all. There's a difference in Sylus' behavior after that, you can't pinpoint what it is, but you can guess what the reason is.

The curtain is about to close, so you pay no mind to it, you've accepted your fate, even if it hurts like hell.

I'm writing the saddest Bond fic in the world, and because it'll probably never get finished, I'm going to bullet point it here because I need people to cry with. It's 5000 words at the moment. I think I need it to be about 30,000.

After the events of NTTD, Q is grieving Bond. Privately, he is also grieving that Bond being the one who got away, or at least the one who would not stay. They slept together once, in the aftermath of Skyfall death, and as Q says in the fic, it was "the pinnacle of my years-long journey into vastly unrequited love."

After snapping at Mallory during a meeting, Mallory schedules Q some psychology appointments. There are snippets of these appointments throughout the fic.

Q throws out all his plants. Replaces them with sculptural bits and pieces from around the lab.

Over a year on from Bond's death, MI6 recruits a new 004. His name is Edward Jones. He's tall and lithe, with auburn hair, an excellent sense of humour, and no outwardly visible baggage. He takes an interest in Q.

But Q refuses -- categorically refuses -- to ever get involved with an agent again. That was an unspoken rule before Bond died, and now it's non-negotiable.

Except Q is no good at sticking to the rules. He's just as bad as Bond was, really. Edward is charming, and though he asks Q to dinner, he doesn't press after Q refuses him. Instead, perhaps having talked to Nomi or Moneypenny, he is simply there. All the time. He becomes a shoulder to lean on and a friend, despite all Q's attempts to distance himself.

But then...Mallory asks Q to help on a project that will reverse the effects of Heracles, and Q snaps. Already feeling a colossal amount of guilt for telling Bond it couldn't be fixed, Q cannot deal with the thought of coming up with a cure when he cannot administer it to the one person who deserved to be cured.

Distraught, stressed and full of fury at everything, he sleeps with Edward that night. And -- shock horror! -- sex works as an excellent temporary coping mechanism, so Q keeps sleeping with him. Against all his rules, he's given into his heart again.

“Who was he?” asks Edward, one day, as Q is making breakfast. / “Who was who?”/ “Whoever you’re trying to forget when you’re with me.”

“You’re a bastard,” snaps Q, another day, when Edward pushes too hard. / “Is that me you’re talking to, or him?”

After the above fight/angry sex/make up sex combo, Edward goes away on a mission and gets shot.

Q, reeling, doesn't visit him in hospital. Though he wants to, he thinks it's smarter to stay away. Best not get too attached (Oh, Q! we're crying, you're already attached!!!)

Edward, unsurprisingly does not take this well. “Enjoy living with your ghosts, Quartermaster,” he says, before going home to heal and get very drunk.

And maybe it's the getting shot bit, or maybe it's that they're making progress on a cure for Heracles, or maybe it's Moneypenny finally shaking Q until something comes loose, but Q cannot sleep. He feels sick about Edward. He feels awful. What kind of Quartermaster doesn't visit an injured agent? What kind of friend doesn't? What kind of lover, casual or not?

Plagued with guilt and realising he feels more for Edward than he ever intended to, Q turns up at arse-o-clock in the morning, in the rain to Edward's flat. Amongst other things, he says:

“He was an agent. Another Double-0." and

"I'm so sorry." and

“I spent nearly a decade of my life hiding that I loved him, from myself, him, and anyone else who might have wanted to hear. It’s the biggest regret I have. I don’t want to make the same mistakes again.”

Hot, passionate, intense, slow make up sex.

After a few more missions, Edward tells Q, "I'm finished. I enjoyed the job, but I only loved it because it led me to you."

They take a visit to Skyfall, where Q runs into Kincade and talks to Bond's grave where he says, among other things:

"Hello, James. I hope you’re getting some well-earned rest." and

“I love him. Eve told me you would want to hear that. I’m not so sure. You always were a bit of a possessive prick about the other agents having what was yours.” and

“I still love you. I think I will until the end of my days. It’ll be a privilege to carry you with me. Whatever small part of you I had.”

Q is in a daze most of that night. In the morning, he apologises to Edward for all the tears, and Edward replies:

“Never — and I do mean never — apologise for loving someone, especially not as well as you loved him."

Cue the I love yous and sex.

They return to London, where the Heracles cure has hit a roadblock. Q tells Mallory he wants nothing to do with the project anymore. However it turns out, it wasn't his burden to carry in the first place. He wants to be free of it.

The story ends in a quintessential English garden: Kendal in the spring. It's years later, and Edward brings Q a cup of tea in the garden, where Q is trying to read Les Misérables and failing. Instead, he's taking notes in the margins on hummingbirds.

They look up to see a red kite soaring through the air. Q things wistfully of Bond. It's a dull hurt, now, not the scraping raw thing that it was when he met Edward. Bond would probably enjoy Q remembering him in the wings of a bird of prey; always free.

Q still loves London, but he thinks he can imagine another life, a few years away yet, watching the birds in the Lake District and working in his shed, with Edward reading a book at his side.

5. How did you choose their name and why? Was it simply based on vibes or is there any specific meaning behind the name? Are the reasons behind their name different in- and out of universe?

Oh, actually!! I usually don't think much about the meaning of names, just open lists and test what sticks, but I wanted to do something interesting for Skyfall, so I actually looked up history and meanings for it!!

Nevada means "from the place that is covered in snow", and at one point in the story after Ray gets badly hurt, they live in a cabin together, surrounded by snow. I generally associate Nevada with snow a lot - in a calm, nice way. It's a nice parallel to the fact that one of Ray's biggest dreams is to see an ocean, but they end up spending that quiet and gentle moment together in the cold and harsh climate.

Nevada's real name is Xander, they probably chose it themself tbh. It means "defender and protector of humankind". One of the meanings of Ray's last name (Andromeda) is “leader of humankind, ruler of man”, and besides Xander just having a nice ring to it, I also wanted them to match!!

17. Are there any motifs or symbols associated with the character? How are they represented, in their design, personality or in some other way?

Snow, as I said!! Or more like, a warm cabin in the snow, or walking through the snow after someone who cares about you made sure you are wearing the nicest, warmest clothes you have, so only your cheeks and nose feel the cold. Nevada can come off as too cold in the beginning maybe, but they always care so so much.

Also a lighthouse, though not necessarily with Nevada themself metaphorically being one. It's because of the song Devil's Lighthouse by The Correspondents and the fact that I associate Ray and Nevada with it a lot. It influenced the creation of them and Skyfall in general heavily. The working title of one of Skyfall parts is from this song, as well as Ray's longing for the sea (partially, it's also a big projection), but tell no one.
