Dergtober Day 5: Map
Decided for today's prompt to draw one of my other pirate dragons, Snappy! He's the navigator of The Interloper, so he's here looking a bit puzzled while working out a map of some kind! Maybe some treasure?

Seasons 5-8 of The Smurfs (Part 1): The Smurflings
Tumblr media
In Season 5, four kid Smurfs were introduced to the series to appeal to a younger demographic. Their names were Nat (who was originally the adult Natural Smurf in the previous season prior), Snappy, Slouchy and Sassette. When they came on television for the first time, most 80s fans were not pleased with their presence. Some found it too unnecassary to happen, while others found them incredibly obnoxious or too annoying as characters. Now, this wasn't Hanna-Barbera's fault, not even in the slightest. It was at a time where the babyfication fad was a thing and NBC wanted the Smurfs to jump on the bandwagon, so they can continue to keep the show fresh and from becoming stale.
Meanwhile in Belgium, The Smurflings were soon added in their own comic book adaptation after their debut on TV. But unlike their cartoon show counterparts, they didn't have much appearances in the comics. This is because Studio Peyo was aware of their "overexposure" on American television at the time and didn't want the characters to overshadow the rest of the adult Smurfs (who are not Papa, Smurfette and Brainy). In my opinion, I think the backstory of where the three adult Smurfs de-age back into Smurflings was too unnecessary to happen. Why were the Smurflings added? Because they needed child characters for kids to relate to. Are they pointless? Sort of, yes.
The Smurflings are a good addition to the series, but they marginalized a handful of other Smurfs, such as Hefty, Lazy and Jokey. Unlike Scooby-Doo, however, they weren't written out of the show that quick after the fifth season's success. They were still there to help the Smurflings retrace their memories through childhood again, even if they don't get as much episodes centered around them like in the previous four seasons. On the plus side, they even had a dog named Puppy to take care of, who was a bit larger than the Smurfs. But we'll get to him in a future post.
What are your thoughts on the Smurflings? Feel free to leave a reply and click on "watch" to see more fanart and fanfiction in the near future!
