okay so!! i was trying to think of things that hekima would genuinely angst over bc she’s just!! so upbeat that it was difficult for me to imagine her actually being SAD. and i don’t like that bc real people get sad, and i’d very much like my characters to be realistic!

but then one thing hit me, and it really should’ve been obvious considering her backstory.

hekima oozes self confidence and toots her own horn on a daily basis; while that’s a fun part of her personality that people start to expect, it’s also hekima setting high expectations for herself and putting a load of pressure on her shoulders. now!! she works really well under pressure, so maybe that’s part of her reason being the way she is, and most of the time, she’s okay even if she isn’t the Best bc she is TRYING her best. but sometimes : )) she’s not okay 

so in her backstory, hekima’s entire reason for wanting her quirk to manifest quickly is to heal her mom’s legs -- she can see how sad her parents are and hates seeing her mom in the hospital. her mom’s quirk is healing through energy transfer, and hekima physically takes more after her mother, so naturally!! she thought she’d get her mother’s quirk. of course, we both know that’s not the case, and finding out she had her dad’s quirk DEVASTATED lil five-year-old hekima bc she so, so badly wanted to help her mom.

her mom remedies this by telling her she can help so many more people now! save so many all at once with just one hand! and urges her to help those who need it most, who have no one else, and hekima takes that to heart.

more than ANYTHING, she wants to be a hero who helps people, who everyone can depend on.

so there’s this pressure she puts on herself to be that hero who can’t be bested, who can’t be stopped, who will save you no matter WHAT is thrown at her, and that’s A Lot. and i can imagine it gets to be a bit much sometimes?? like say she consistently places second or third in her class for physical tests -- she’d really get bummed out even if she’s smiling and saying “ i’ll beat you next time!! ” bc it feels like she’s failing. “ you’re in the top three, though! ” but she’s not the best, and isn’t that her whole thing? isn’t that who she’s striving to be? what’s all this big talk for if she can’t back it up?

and good lord if and when she gets thrown into the fray and she can’t save someone??? someone gets hurt or worse DIES on her watch??????? get ready to slap some sense into this boastful bean bc she’s going to lose 80% of her confidence and what’s left is going to be a poor front to throw off her pals’ concern. she will brood and blame herself until she’s convinced she isn’t WORTHY of being a hero, so pls... have a talk with my daughter if that happens!!

milestone sleepover

so, let’s have a sleepover! you know the drill, all the usual stuff, but I’ll summarise below and give a brief overview of the things you can send in!

first of all, if you’re reading this, then the sleepover has begun!

okay, so ground-rules first.

don’t be mean. most important, don’t be a dick. you don’t need to judge other people for their requests.

don’t send things i don’t have on my blog. stilinski triplets, characters that aren’t in my masterlist, and things i haven’t been writing. if it’s not there, don’t request it!

use your manners. if you’re rude or demanding or just not polite on some way, you’re getting ignored. i do not have time to teach manners, i get enough of that at work!

one request per ask. you can send as many as you want, but in separate asks!! if you send them all in one ask, i can’t answer it. too many. no brain work.

next up, what you can send!

we’re gonna do this in an emoji basis. even if you don’t have the emoji, you can copy and paste the symbol before it and it’ll show up for me. no emoji - no request.

🛸 - ships. you know how ships work, give me ample info and don’t be basic. if i see something like ‘i like star wars and my favourite food is curly fries’ it’s getting deleted. it’s not a ship if you’re trying to force a certain character. just don’t do that weak shit.

Can we all agree that Alec 100% starts wearing turtlenecks tho?? Like he HAS the turtleneck energy!!! I imagine him slowly starting to wear them in like jewel tones and loosely tucked into a pair of slacks or fitted jeans and a snazzy belt with the sleeves bunched up just a bit.                    chiyoko loves her dog -- she really does, but man, does she want to murder him when he leaps over their fence to chase after whatever he’s spotted. “ JUN!! oh, you little--- ” she swallows the curse down with a huge gulp of air as she takes off after the german shepherd who’s galloping towards... oh, that’s wonderful! it’s a little puppy and one of her classmates, if the uniform is anything to go by. “ jun, leave it! ” chiyo hollers, though to no avail. jun sticks his nose near the puppy’s rear end anyway, and by the time she catches up, jun has had his fill of investigating and is waiting for her as if she hadn’t been yelling after him. ass. chiyo grabs hold of jun’s collar, out of breath as she bows her head at who she realizes now to be... ken? she THINKS that’s his name; the school year has only just begun, and chiyo is still trying to put names to faces. 

“ sorry for the trouble! this little jerk doesn’t like to listen. ” and jun looks absolutely content, tail wagging this way and that as she scowls at him. her ire turns into concern in the next second, though, when her gaze turns to the little german shepherd pup at ken’s side. “ is your puppy okay? ”

For so long on the internet, I had stuck with another username, and I decided with this account I would make a new start. My name is Catherine irl so I kept with the C and I felt the name Cazzy was very snazzy (see what I did there) so I just randomly choose that, then I got imagines simply because I was going to write imagines

3. How long have you been on tumblr?

Coming up to two months I think? I wasn't allowed to when I was younger or I would have heavily been in the superwholock fandom, so it was probably a good thing I was banned from it, but after I saw the 3rd episode of TFAWS I knew I wanted to write about Zemo, Quotev and Wattpad thing I wrote never really got any attention so I thought I would try Tumblr and I'm so glad I did

Ngl Idk what this is, I'm assuming it's something about if I queue what I post? If it is then only one-shots, my one-shots always do better in the evenings so if I finish before them then I'll queue them to be released around 9PM or 10PM

It was originally my main comfort character Loki but I changed it to an avatar that looks like myself because I knew if I kept it as fictional characters I would be changing it all the time

I was looking through the picture section of my drive and found it, it used to be my screen saver for my Chromebook so I thought I would use it as Doctor who is my main comfort show and the 11th Doctor was my first comfort character/character I loved

A Freudian slip! Which is crazy as it was only the second thing I wrote on here and I was still trying to get used to writing in second person

I like spreading awareness of things, things that people need to know about but I don't like when posts are very demanding about it. Still, when I see important stuff about awareness coming up on my dash I try to repost it.

As for those 'repost or...' as a kid, I did because I was very superstitious but after golden Freddie didn't kill me when I didn't repost one I think I'm safe 😁👍

1. Why did you choose your url? wayward comes from carry on my wayward son by kansas which is highly connected to spn. Fairchild is because when I came up with the url, I had red hair and green eyes which I associated with Clary Fairchild and her mother Jocelyn Fairchild from TMI. I also loved Charlotte Fairchild and thought she was amazing and adore what I had seen of Matthew Fairchild at the time.

2. Do you have any sideblogs? yes, I run a lot of events so I have a ton but this is my mainly marvel blog. I also have @queenofangstanddrama which is just a mix of things, @official-wayward-herondale which is non-marvel fandoms that I'm associated with (spn, ouat, kh, ff, genshin, etc), and @dylanlakenwritespoems is my poetry blog. Secondly, yeah like I know people didn’t mean to message me or even tag me (had that a few times too), but it was just getting to the point where it was just really bothering and getting to me. 

I can’t explain why but it was such a blow to my confidence and I would end up feeling really down about it. It would also kill my inspiration at times too and I would end up not writing for the rest of the day. sdhjfbh 

Like I said though, I’m not mad and I don’t hold it against anyone who had made the mistake. It was just upsetting because it kept happening and it seemed to be happening more frequently lately. 

Honestly, when it happened the first few times I actually thought it was funny. But the fact it had begun to happen so much and was starting to make me sad made it a problem. 

It’s just disheartening to come online and see you have some notifications, like asks and messages, only to realize that they were not for you but for another writer. 

Maybe its silly to be upset over something like that, but to me it wasn’t I guess lol

In the end, I’ll miss the old url but I like this one a lot as well! And now the confusion should hopefully end, so I think it works out better for everyone now.

On Tumblr-ing

I used the most recent Self-promotion Sunday to experiment with sharing my works on Tumblr. As everyone knows, this site is difficult to get a handle on.

Is it worth it to play nice with this site, so my posts show up in tags?

That’s the question that I wanted the answer to and why I chose to fill my queue with all of my original works for one day but posted them in a way that I hadn’t before. I’m not an expert on Tumblr, but I’ll share what I’ve learned from it. However, my observations aren’t going to be helpful to all.

The situation: I create fanfics and podfics. I don’t typically create for popular ships or tropes. I fall in the category of content creators that are no longer new but aren’t battle-hardened fandom veterans.

If any/all of the above applies to you, and you’ve experienced frustration with having your work ‘seen’ on Tumblr, and you’d rather read about someone else’s experiment with this site than do one yourself, keep reading.

First, realistically consider what content you share and how it appears to someone scrolling through the site. For example: sharing fanfic and sharing fanart on Tumblr are two totally different beasts. I cannot overstate the importance of this fact. Be fair to yourself and don’t compare your stats as a writer to those of an artist.

Another thing to remember about sharing your written works to Tumblr is that you’re asking someone to click a link to view/read it. It doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it is.

Imagine a member of your target audience laying in bed in the morning, waiting for the need for breakfast or coffee to be great enough to coax them out from under their blankets. In the meantime, they’re scrolling down their dash (and what appears is dependent upon how they filter posts, but that’s a whole other box I’m not going to unpack here). They’re laughing at memes, getting riled up over politics or social issues, gasping at celebrity controversies, wishing for the days before Tumblr purged the naughty stuff, cute baby animal videos, etc. It’s so easy for a text post to get lost in all of that. It’s too easy for a text post to be overlooked in all of that.

It’s important for posts to show up in tags because sometimes, people don’t just scroll through their dash. Sometimes, they search tags for something specific, and when they find it, they’re more inclined to click on that link to check out your stuff.

I’m going to reel it back to myself and explain why I played with posts and tags. I run a fandom server, and I see folks (mostly new to fandom) who feel bad because their works don’t get many notes on Tumblr. During my first year in fandom, I felt invisible, and it was awful. I want to give advice and encouragement, so I experimented with making my posts visible in tags to see what kind of difference it would make, or not make. I’m going to be the first to say that if I created for popular ships, or popular tropes, or a hot and thriving new fandom, or were a BNF, I probably would’ve seen a huge difference. While what I experienced wasn’t an immediate tidal wave of new admirers of my work, I see how this could increase my readers and listeners over time.

Tumblr, in its infinite wisdom (???), hides posts that have linked works within them. So how do you share a link to your work and have it show up in tags? AO3 has a handy ‘share’ button at the top of your individual works (if you don’t see the magical ‘share’ button, check your account settings to confirm that it’s on). You can share your work directly to Tumblr or Twitter (an even worse site for promoting fanfic) and add bells and whistles to the post, and customize it with what tags you think should be assigned to it.

When it comes to tagging, start with the biggest first, and put the most important in the first five tags. For example: Fandom, pairing, characters, and genre tags should be listed first. Do create a unique tag for yourself to tack on at the end (more on this later). Don’t add tags for popular characters, genres, pairings, etc., that don’t appear in your work.

For the purpose of my experiment, I didn’t add any snazzy images or gifs to my posts. I simply shared the post from AO3 and added tags. I shared all different pairings, genres, and content of various ratings. They appeared utterly unremarkable to me. They were boring, and exactly like something that I, myself, would scroll past. However, I did it that way because the more you add to a post, the more you risk using a word or image that Tumblr doesn’t like. And if it doesn’t like it, your post simply won’t show up in tags. Then you’re left with dissecting your post and editing editing editing until you figure out which word or image was the offender.

At the end of the experiment, I had to conclude that I receive more immediate activity on posts that I draft on this site that include links to my work, even though those don’t show up in tags. I’m going to assume that’s because those original posts are more attractive. However, most of the slight interaction that I saw with my experimental posts were from new-to-me Tumblr users, and I earned some new followers from it. The fact that those posts now reside in tags means that I can expect more of that in small doses, in the future.

Will this change how I post new works going forward? Yes. Typically, I draft an original post linking my work, then reblog it for my followers in different time zones. Now, I’ll share that same work from AO3 in a new original post instead of reblogging the initial one. But I’m going to try to make them look more interesting, and hope they still show up in tags.

I learned from this, but I want to stress something to content creators who feel invisible and get down on themselves for it. There are a million reasons why posts don’t get traction on Tumblr, and they are not because people don’t like your work. Basing your work’s worth on statistics is incredibly unfair to yourself. However difficult that is to ignore, don’t do that to yourselves.

I once shared something that I was proud of writing. Then, I cried for three days straight and ate my entire ice cream supply because it received fewer hits than I have fingers, never mind kudos or comments. Then I realized that I shared it on the same night as the GoT finale. Facepalm.

The joy that comes from creating something new is (or should be) the reason you do it. Congratulate yourself on being so incredibly clever to come up with your work and brave enough to share it on the wilds of the internet where it will remain for someone to find and love. And when your gem of a work is found, make sure you’ve added a unique tag that is all your own to it, so that others can search that tag and binge on all the beauty you’ve made.
