As they walked closer Maxy could clearly hear Daniel’s voice, twisting and yelling out for his daddy. GP watched as Daniel stopped talking immediately, abandoning Josh and their conversation to walk towards them, a wide grin in place as he said, “hi baby boy, have you come to visit the trees?”

“Missed daddy,” Maxy said shyly, laying his head on GP’s shoulder as Daniel’s wide palm rubbed his back, “Jeepy help find,”

“Do you want a daddy cuddle?”

“Pease,” Maxy loosened his grip on GP to reach for Daniel, forgetting about his teddy bear in his want for his daddy. As the bear fell to the ground, Josh’s quick hands were the only things keeping Dennis from the messy soil.

“Whoops,” Josh exclaimed, rising from his squat with the teddy bear held aloft in victory, “got him!”

Maxy gasped, wide eyes fixed on Josh and the bear, “Joshy saved Dennis,”

“He did, huh? Kept his butt from getting dirty in the mud,” Daniel bounced Maxy on his hip to make him laugh, Josh handing over the bear easily and watching with a small smile and Maxy pressed a kiss to his head and held him up for Daniel to do the same.

“Fank-oo Joshy,” Maxy said, “save Maxy’s best friend, very nice,”

“You’re welcome, bud,” Josh braved rubbing Maxy’s back much as Daniel had minutes earlier, smiling when it was well-received, “we don’t want muddy bear butt in the house, do we?”

The little giggled and shook his head, hiding his face shyly in his daddy’s neck as he blushed. GP grinned, meeting Daniel’s eyes and quirking a brow in question. Daniel let out a sharp bark of a laugh, murmuring something in Maxy’s ear and kissing the side of his head. When Maxy whispered, loud enough for all three of them to hear, “tingly tummy daddy,” GP knew his theory was right.

“Is that why you wanted daddy, Maxy?”

“Just for huggies,” Maxy whispered, shaking his head and peeking out from his hiding spot at GP, “now Maxy tingly,”

“I see,” GP nodded, “shall daddy take you back to the house and uncle Jeep will help Josh out here?”

“Yes pease Jeepy,”

Daniel smiled, winked at GP, and clapped a confused-looking Josh on the shoulder as he passed them. He started talking softly to Maxy as he walked, the little snuggling close to his front and responding. GP looked at Josh and the basket of overripe olives he had been plucking from the floor and sighed, “given myself a job here now, haven’t I?”

Remus had mentioned several times in his letters during the school year that he had found a small litter of kittens under the barn by his house. He asked James and Sirius to each name one, because in his own words, “I’ll love them even more if they’re named by friends.” And so one was named Tangerine (Sirius), another Socks (James), and Remus named the third Gerald. He did not bother to explain this decision.
