So, hmm...

I think I'll give commentary on two things here - one for my Skyrim fic The Perfect Storm, and the other for my Oblivion fic With light comes shadow!

The Perfect Storm

Hehe, so, I think here I'll go on about something simple but that I love bringing into the fic - Elyse has a sweet tooth.

There have been numerous occasions during which she's been chatting to someone or doing something all whilst munching away at something sweet, or was about to do so.

For example:

Chapter 5:

Elyse reached into the bag which she had with her and pulled out one of the apples, ready to eat it before returning home. She didn’t expect to get a sudden tap on her shoulder, which made her flinch before promptly throwing the apple at her ‘assailant’.

Maybe I should clarify that it's a red apple, because they're sweeter (and I've always found green apples too sour - I've only ever used them to make apple sauce with heapings of sugar!!!)

Chapter 8:

Elyse had to stifle a yawn as she nodded in response to Farengar’s questions as she sat – very much reluctantly – with the court mage. "I haven’t had reason to," she muttered, now reaching out for a sweetroll she had been trying to eat for quite some time.

And

The questions were really starting to build up by that point, so she decided that enough was enough, and that he could wait for a few moments before he would get his answers. She grabbed the sweetroll, and took as big of a mouthful as she could manage without ending up spitting out crumbs as she ate, holding up one of her fingers to let him know that he would have to be patient.

Elyse has priorities and Farengar's questions aren't one of them.

Chapter 11:

In what was a stroke of luck, he quietened down when dessert was served. But then again, who could focus on anything other than a warm, freshly baked cake drizzled with cream and snowberries when such a delight was put out before them?

As she was finishing her last mouthful of her cake, Elyse found herself being tapped on the shoulder by the boy, a look which seemed almost pleading on his face. "Tell him! Tell father that I can join in next time that you help to train the guards!"

It suddenly felt really hard to continue chewing as she felt both Frothar and Balgruuf’s eyes upon her.

Chapter 17:

"Do... you remember when you saw Nelkir talking to me the other day?” She glanced at him for a moment, until he nodded, before continuing. “He said some strange things to me," she whispered as her hands wrapped around the mug of tea which had not long been poured for her.

It's not mentioned here but is something I am going to add in when I get to editing this chapter, but that tea most certainly has sugar in it.

And in the upcoming chapter 18, Elyse will be spending a decent amount of time eating fruit tarts. And here's a little excerpt from when Balgruuf realises that she has a sweet tooth:

When she returned, it was with a half-eaten tart in her hand, steam escaping from the filling as she went to take another bite. It was only then that he began to pick up on the scent she had been going on about – it was most certainly from the tart, and it had to have been freshly baked.

“So... You like sweet foods, hm?”

She raised an eyebrow at him as though he were mad for asking such a question. “Of course I do! Sweetrolls, cake, tarts, candies, berries... How could I not?”

Elyse loves her sweet stuff! Her favourite thing though is strawberries, which are abundant in Cyrodiil but not so much in Skyrim. She can settle for things like snowberries though.

With light comes shadow

So, in the one whole chapter I have posted so far, one of the key points is that Florian has a lucky septim from his first properly successful theft. I've already gone on before about how after he loses it he eventually finds himself a new lucky Septim (Martin), so I'm not going to go on about that again, but instead go on about the fact that things being like a coin will be a massive metaphor in this fic!

Both Florian and Drissa are opposite sides of a coin, one is heads, one is tails. One is a criminal, the other is a rule-following, lauded public figure in the arena. One sticks to the shadows to avoid being caught, the other is in the spotlight.

From the moment Florian loses his coin, it is as though the metaphorical coin has been flipped for the pair. His life changes for good, for the better - he becomes not just a hero, but a champion, and even finds love and starts having hope for the future. Drissa's life changes for the worst, but she begins to welcome this darkness as she seeks revenge for her arrest and finds herself in the Dark Brotherhood, but still has to suffer through more and more as she keeps losing what she wants to hold close. But both of them accept these changes by the end of the fic... So perhaps there's a chance for a happy ending for them both? Hehe.

Natives perfect for a ski resort (with northeast in mind)

I am procrastinating on doing my actual work and wanted to do something fun.

I ski (or at least used to before I moved) and honestly, a lot of times it was just sticks and sticks and sticks, which is fine, but today I am making an imaginary ski resort and these are the main plants I would include in it to make it ✨aesthetic ✨ only using natives! There is something so refreshing about the idea of designing something for just one season.

Ok, so first things first! lets talk evergreens! Obviously, the time people are visiting a ski resort is in dead winter, so we want to cater to it.

Eastern Hemlocks:

The eastern hemlock is struggling in a lot of regions due to an invasive bug right now, but I list it in hopes of a swift recovery and because they are one of my favorite conifer trees. They have soft short needles and tiny pinecones. They tend to keep lower branches also, which gives them a very Christmas tree shape.

Eastern White Pine (or any other pine that is native is fine):

There are a lot of pines that are very pervasive, but I think the appeal of them is there larger cones and their long needles. In the winter it is always so beautiful to see them coated with ice!

Red Spruce or Black Spruce (black spruces have cooler looking cones) :

While further south spruces are harder to find native populations, I still include them in this list because I am ADAMENT that at my imaginary ski resort there would be specialty spruce tip soda and beer, but I want them to be native not planting invasive for the commodity.

Eastern red cedar:

not actually a cedar, it is actually a juniper. They get these beautiful blue berries on them (I think just the females though). And their bark is very pretty!

Now we can't just plant conifers, biodiversity is the spice of life, so for other trees, I think the thing most important in the winter is what is bark looks like or is it holds fruit/color:

first on the list is obvious, The American holly:

this plant actually leans pretty southern and hugs the coast the further north you go, so because of that I can say eh, depending on the ski resorts location I could lean toward excluding it (unlike the spruce).

winged sumac and staghorn sumac:

they have bundles or cones of red berries though out winter, enough said.

next it is addressing interesting bark starting with...

yellow birch:

we have a pretty hefty population of yellow birch trees in my families woods and they have a very pretty coppery bark that peels.

Paper birch:

This one is just a classic when we think of birch trees and unique bark, but I feel like I would mostly plant these by the lodge because it might be hard to see while skiing. Although if we planted enough of them maybe we could tap them and make a ski resort special birch syrup (less sweet than maple syrup, but a little sweeter than molasses).

Sycamores:

Stunning, every time.

Alright! enough with trees, lets talk shrubs/ small trees.

Canadian Yew:

red berries and evergreen? Hell. Yeah.

Winterberry holly and viburnum:

There was one of these growing on the side of the road on my route to my university and I would enjoy looking at it every winter.

American Barberry:

red. berry.... I tried eating one because it said they were edible... was not a fan honestly. Is it wrong to put this one in a sky place if it is thorny?

snowberry:

A white berry this time! we are switching it up

Red-osier dogwood:

I see these everywhere, and I still love them, so! here they are, literally just red sticks.

and then more evergreens!

northern white cedar and common juniper:

northern white cedars are a tree actually and probably could have gone in the tree section but I was mentally picturing them as more decorative. And then common juniper to take up some ground cover space.

Alright! I am feeling pretty good about this, now time for some misc. items. These are for ground cover, while snow can be generated for the slopes, a lot of times you get a warm spell that will melt and expose the ground. In times like that, we still want things to look festive!

Partridge berries and Pine moss:

Eastern teaberry and American Cranberry:

I wasn't going to include these.... but I have to. Teaberry plants smell so good, an absolute must have. Maybe at the lodge we could offer a special teaberry tea. Or teaberry hot cocoa?! Yum.

And cranberries would be such a fun thing to say you are growing idk.

I would also like to note that my imaginary ski lodge takes great pride in the native wildflowers we maintain in our ski lanes over the summer months.

Well anyway! I had a good time, there are definitely more plants that I didn't feature because I felt this was already an infinitely long post, like spicebush, American strawberry bush, etc. and more. I encourage you to add to this post if you want to.

While I did this entirely for fun, I do recognize some of these species prefer more shade, or more wetness than may be possible at my imaginary ski lodge. Also, always be sure to check the native ranges of plants before purchasing them to get the most benefit from planting natives.

But! it is good to highlight all these beautiful winter plants.

**Final note, I am by no means an expert! I am a geologist, but in undergrad I took a couple environmental classes because I am also very passionate about it. I grew up outdoors, I still love outdoors, but I can still be very ignorant about it.**

💌How would they plan a romantic evening for a significant other?

Elentari's a total romantic, but she's also very much a dragon-soul. if she's planning an evening for Miraak, I can see her packing her enchanted bag—wine and tankards to drink from, cheeses, sweet pastries, snowberries of course, chocolates, as well as a blanket—and taking wing with Dragon Aspect, then flying with him to one of her favourite lakeside nature spots where they can have a picnic and watch the sun go down. if the aurora borealis don't come out on their own, that's nothing a quick Shout of Clear Skies can't change. maybe they'll stargaze and sleep beneath the constellations, too... 🥰

😍: What does your OC find irresistible in others?

a big thing for Ellie is intelligence, as well as good conversation skills—she'd love to be able to feel comfortable just to sit in companionable silence and exist with someone, but she also needs to be able to have good, interesting talks, to share ideas and stories, to learn something new. a person who can talk well into the night with her, who never wants to stop learning and exploring and seeing things, who'll maybe use their knowledge of all things literature and language to write her notes and poems? oh, they've unlocked a surefire way into her heart!

3. How do they put themselves to bed at night?

Kinara likes to read before bed, but she hardly ever falls asleep while in the middle of reading

4. How east is it to earn their trust?

Kinara is generally pretty trusting, as she believes in the good in people. She trusts the people around her to be honest, not steal, and just generally have common decency. To actually earn her full trust takes a bit more though, but still not super difficult. Gaining her full trust is practically inevitable if you know her for long enough.

15. How do they speak? Is what they say usually thought of on the spot, or do they rehearse it in their mind first?

Kinara talks like a ‘human’ would for the most part(and I now realize that everything before this could be read like it’s written in third person lol), unless she’s very frustrated, she speaks in first person. There have been a few instances when she’s slipped up and spoken in third person- like when she gets angry.

She doesn’t need to rehearse what she says, and has a pretty good natural flow when she speaks. She will at least think over points she wants to get across to someone if the conversation is important enough though.

26. What is their preferred mode of transportation?

Kinara is extremely proud of her horse, Snowberry, as she considers it one of her greatest creations. Snowberry is a summonable horse that I actually have not fully figured out the logistics of, since she was kinda just a passing ‘huh, this would be a neat thing’ kinda thought. But yeah. Summonable horse 👍

27. What causes them to feel dread?

The thought of losing someone close to her, but also having to go into water any higher than waist deep. I actually only remembered after making her afraid of water, that it’s a trope for cats to dislike water lol. There’s a few reasons she doesn’t like water, but to sum it up without having to go into deep explaination, ✨traumatic experiences✨

42. How badly do they want to reach their end goal?

Kinara’s never really had an ‘end goal’. She’s had a few small ones- get out of Windhelm, gain more knowledge as a mage, join the College of Winterhold, etc.- but she’s never really had an ‘end goal’

If she was sent on a quest though, she would do just about everything in her power to make sure the necessary results were achieved

A. Why are you excited about this character?

She started out as pretty much all of my(2 1/2ish) tes character do- she was a character I played as, and then slowly I created a backstory for her and got attached. I’ve been working on her off and on for y e a r s now- she originally had a team of like,, four?? Others, only one of which I’ve kept. She’s gone through a lot of change and even though I’ve never posted anything I’ve written(none of it’s complete, and I’m too shy to anyways) I grew a lot while writing her. Overall, just a lot of sentimental value- that and she’s a kitty cat that can do magic tricks, what more could anyone want?

B. What inspired you to create them?

Like I said, I played as her- probably before she even had a proper name(I genuinely can’t remember if it used to be something different, or if she was always named Kinara)- and her story grew with me. I guess I just stuck with her because she was the perfect way for me to explore Skyrim’s story from the perspective of an OC that wasn’t a dragonborn(she was also originally the LDB, but that changed pretty early on)

E. Are they someone you would get along with? Would they get along with you?

As with a lot of my ocs, there are definitely a lot of shared characteristics. Kinara is probably neutral good on the alignment chart, and she herself follows lawful ideas(don’t steal, cheat, lie, etc.) but she doesn’t actually mind people like thieves and even some assassins. As long as no one innocent is being harmed or targeted, she’s pretty laid back with what she expects from others. So yeah, I think we’d get along pretty well(except for when I go on killing streaks because I got bored while playing Skyrim)
