I really wanna here more about the time travel au. What would c!vanilla and r!vanilla think of each other?

But here’s a summary of what I think they think of each other:

On a conscious level both of them realize that the other is themself but they are so removed from each other in age and demeanor that they treat each other as different people, if that makes sense.

In Truthless Recluse’s (I’ve been calling him Dark Vanilla for the most part as an alias he would use in the AU) mind, he is prepared to protect his child self from Shadow Milk by any means possible and is initially on a hair trigger looking for any signs of Shadow Milk Cookie’s early influence. However, he is slowly but gradually realizing that Shadow Milk Cookie influenced his memories when they interacted, and re-experiencing them from this outside perspective is giving him a tiny bit more peace of mind for the safety of his child self. But this also means that he’s done a lot to himself in the future based on the words of Shadow Milk and is blaming himself for having changed so drastically. He doesn’t believe that he himself will ever be fit to hold the title of hero again, but he does believe that his child self’s potential is separate from his and that child Pure Vanilla, with his boundless kindness, is fully deserving of all the status and power to come his way in the future.

one aspect of furina's characterization that's pretty understated but that i really really really love is her intelligence and curiosity. usually in genshin, when a character's intelligence is an important trait of theirs, there are aspects of their design, writing, voice acting, etc, that very clearly tell you "hey this character is smart." albedo, for example, wears a labcoat, is always saying big sciency words in a calm, rational tone of voice, and other characters are always talking about how smart he is

but furina? nothing about her on the surface suggests that she's a "smart" character - quite the opposite, in fact. superficially, she's introduced as a bratty, conceited, overconfident person who actually has no idea what she's doing. we eventually learn in the archon quest that that was all an act, but even after she regains her freedom, nothing about her really seems archetypically intelligent, at least at face value

instead, furina's intelligence is always shown rather than told (the only exception being nahida's voiceline about her). she had an intelligence network across teyvat feeding her information, and we saw in the flashback how she directed researchers to study the prophecy and potential ways of stopping it. before things like lyney's trial or directing the two musketeers, she'd stay up all night planning and piecing things together all on her own. she loves learning new things, she has lines in the teapot about how, when she's interested in something, she wants to become the most knowledgeable person in the topic, and also how she'd like to disassemble the teapot itself to learn how it works, and she's quick to learn new skills (like surfing). and, of course, she's well read, and quite possibly teyvat's foremost expert on the performing arts

i like how furina sort of defies the concept of character archetypes. she's initially presented as an archetypical bratty, dramatic, spoiled popular girl, but that was a role she forced herself into because it's what people expected of her. but the real furina, while still retaining some of the flamboyance from her archon persona, doesn't really fit into a clear mold. she's smart without being a super-genius, and she's kind without being a soft-spoken doormat. it makes her feel multifaceted and real, and i really love that!

anyway, this is why it makes me mad whenever i see people calling furina stupid, cuz she's not!

There's something I've seen about Stanford in lots of fics and such that bother me. It's a bit of this mischaracterization that just bothers me a bit. Not enough to stop reading as the stories are otherwise great just something that I've noticed happen relatively often. Buckle up it's getting long. (edit) I would like to clarify that this isn't a critique. More like a thing I've noticed a lot and it's been bouncing in my brain. This being that both that Stan and Ford were drifting apart in their teenage years for a while, and that had Stan not broken the science fair project they'd still wind up with basically no contact for 10 years, or that Ford wouldn't be supportive of something Stan chose to do for himself.

Like, this is the same guy that promised to go sailing and treasure hunting with Stan if the science fair didn't work out. And before anyone mentions him not saying anything to stand up for Stan in the principles office, what was he suppose to say? What could he say that wouldn't have gotten him in trouble with bare minimum his father if not the principle for being disrespectful. Should he have? Sure. But would you have surrounded by adults that only one barely put up any concern? I know I wouldn't have been able to pull up the courage even if I was furious. Not at that age.

It seems like it's forgotten that Ford was at most 17. He didn't look even remotely happy about what was said about Stan, and the worst of what was said about him we didn't see how he reacted because we saw it from Stan's perspective.

But back to the point, Ford promised to do the treasure hunting if it didn't work out entirely unprompted and when asked what would happen if he did make it to the collage he said Stan would have to visit him. That's not the kind of promise someone would make if they were drifting apart. They were still very close.

So lets say that before the whole science fair thing even came up Stan found something else that he wanted to do, some other passion that he wanted to peruse and wanted to go after. I cannot be convinced that Ford wouldn't be entirely supportive and cheering him on to do so. He is absolutely the type to see that and go into a deep dive research binge to help find resources and things that'll help Stan with his goals. The help wanted or not.

Now another scenario, let's say Stan didn't break the project and ford made it to his West Coast Tech. (I really don't think it would have worked or the collage board to see anyway but that's a different discussion)

They would have drifted a bit but let's face it, Ford is a painfully lonely and sentimental guy without Stan. I mean, he carried a childhood photo of the both of them with him everywhere for at minimum 30 years across who knows how many dementions and owned so many ship themed items and drew boats when they weren't talking for those 10 years before the portal. This man would be calling at minimum once a week just to talk to Stan. Even after collage I cannot see him not insisting that Stan move in with him once he settles.

The comment he said to dipper about knowing how suffocating a sibling can be, I can absolutely see him still having felt that but time alone at a collage across the country, that is more than enough time for him to have sorted through those feelings. Because he sure had no issue with coming to live in close quarters on a boat with Stan at the end of the show. Give him a few years to not just be one of a pair and he'd miss it, he already did in cannon.

If Stan were kicked out during his collage years either he wouldn't know because Stan would hide it, because that is absolutely something Stan would do. Or he finds out and sneaks Stan to live on collage campus with him. He's not this paragon of morality and following the law, this is the same kid who after thinking they killed the sibling brothers readily agreed to steal their clothes and pretend to be them as a logical next step.

I don't think Ford would have been prone not to include Stan in his life had Stan not broken the project. He holds a grudge like no other, and Stan didn't help by not apologizing. Ford shouldn't have turned his back and not tried to reach out, and Stan should have at minimum apologized. Neither were in the right there. But in the case that fight never happened, that betrayal feeling from both ends never happened I cannot see them not speaking for years again unless some outside force kept it from happening. Not Even Stan becoming a conman.

Even in his journals where he knew Stan was conning and stealing his way across the country Ford never wrote it like it was a bad thing, like he was disappointed in Stan. It was a statement of fact because that's what Stan was doing. Ford writes exactly what he thinks and feels in his journals. They grew up with a con artist and liar in their mother. Neither of them see it as a particularly bad thing. So to ford it's simply fact. And it is stated as such.

This got rambly. Point is, it's interesting to see how their relationship could still become strained if the science project wasn't broken and how things could go wrong. But I think it's still something that should be considered that it wouldn't be. That Ford isn't just some cold callus jerk that would be unsupportive of or unwanting of any contact with Stan no matter what happens. Or that they'd drift so far apart that they would hardly speak at all.
