I FINISHED BOYS OVER FLOWERS!!

I have thoughts so this will be long w/ spoilers.

Last night, I finished my 24 hours of boys over flowers manga read-a-thon and I had to sit and ponder at the ending- in the best way.

I am going to miss this series so much.

The Little Mermaid Question

From my last post, yes , of course I was happy that Umi was humbled-or at least hopefully she clues into it someday. I was gagged and gooped.

The reference to the little mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen by Makino solidified this series as a top 3 manga for me. She had my heart when she said

“Why should I be sea foam?”.

It put the good in Goodbye

The call backs from the beginning of the manga were so perfectly woven in as it got closer.

Seeing it all referenced felt like a warm smile. I have to admit, it felt bittersweet knowing why they were here again. I loved that hitting someone with a baseball was how he got his memories back, and bringing up her dropped friend character.

The pacing was refreshing and not heavy. It felt like I could breathe still. The sushi restaurant was a cute reunion. Especially, the detail that she jump ropes in her apartment still.

Yuki

At first, I was annoyed with how much time we spent with Yuki—Only because I was so stressed knowing how little time was left!!

Thankfully, I told myself to relax because I really loved that plot. I felt so stressed for her, and it was so well written. Yuki is such a cool character and storyline.

The billboard reveal with Sarah gagged me. Also that she took him back up on the offer, and I was moved to see she was a different person now. She grew so much.

I loved them all eating cake until dawn.

Also loved Makino craving ramen after. I love that her and Tsukasa were alone eating soup in the restaurant. (Well more just Makino). It was cute.

This chapter fed the girls who don’t end up with their first love, and it was done so thoughtfully. It also made me accept if our main couple don’t end up together, or grow together.

They can change as people, and grow apart. That’s normal. They don’t need to prove to anyone that their love was genuine and they tried. Looking back, I am so happy this was included in the end.

I took a metaphorical drag of a metaphorical cigarette here, and I chewed on that metaphorical smoke before blowing it out.

But…that’s so them! They don’t give us fanservice for them much at peace and although that made me so upset, but we have the whole series to look back on.

It took me throughout the day (even after jewel box) to forgive him for that.

I was thinking about how the hospital arc ended and he’s such a different person without Makino, I can see how she changed him, and now he can be on equal footing with her. She helped him challenge himself and his mom, and live for something.

I am grateful Rui told her to live for herself, and I appreciate her family coming through for her senior year. It was all very true to their chaotic and broke characters and the timing of them trying to move all the time.

Also, the almost hookup!! Her well badly timed fever. I am happy it didn’t happen, because I felt like their story has to continue now.

Also it wasn’t really them. It’s too planned.

We know it has to be after a fight lmaoo.

I think if they did go through with it, it would have been harder to live so far apart too.

I cannot believe that she woke up alone. Not even 24 hours with her guy? At the same time, I like that it must’ve help cement that she didn’t want to leave Japan.

I only wish he planned the date to be closer to home for the vibes to be more immaculate, but I know that it is not his vibe, and there was too much going on (new job, graduating, prom, etc.).

It felt like a cop-out on their first planned trip abroad as a couple. The proposal idea was funny, I genuinely laughed with how much she couldn’t stand the roses smell. I would think the same.

I am sending a theme that he is terrible with grand romantic gestures.

Conclusion

Amazing Shoujos are so life changing, and truly the strongest genre. I love a manga that makes you cry. It makes me love love and remember how fuzzy you feel in it, and I needed that lately. This is so close to my heart.

I regretted reading it so fast but then I remembered how I can read it again and that made me more excited.

I loved the characters. I want to watch the anime (I am begging for a remake in the style of lost heroine).

I saw a lot of other female pro tags in our Makino. Like Kagome from Inuyasha in our main girl, and it’s interesting that their timelines match up production wise! I like that I can see Mao Mao from Apothecary Diaries a bit in her too. They’re going to be themselves whether people like it or not!

Then like the greedy child I am, I had to reach for the jewel-box volume because FOUR YEARS?YOUR TELLING ME NOTHING HAPPENS? I know I don’t need to know all the answers and our characters are strong, but I was excited for a peek.

So…I already finished it. I might make a separate post for that, but honestly this ending helped me feel at peace. It felt more like a cherry on top (and who am I kidding I love more Rui).

I don’t know if I can start the season 2 yet, but I am tempted. I miss hearing Tsukasa’s mis-entendre of phrases and things! Like light and day. I also just want to think about the story more.

I remember I downloaded Jump to read this series. I forgot after the signup process (lol), read one piece instead and thankfully remembered it. It is 100% up in my favorite mangas (a growing list but I love this manga so much).

This was so fun to read.

Honestly? 10/10.

It’s camp, timeless, insane and it knows it. It loves it. It is also mature, heartfelt and honest. The author truly loved crafting this.

I also love her updates throughout! Reading this in time must’ve been a treat and hell.

Next unit from the unit swap, time for the idol group!

An idol group full of secrets, looking for their dreams.

Despite being an idol group, they have kind of a mysterious vibe, and also have a lot of issues. Though it is not a Mafuyization of Tsukusa, if anything Tsukasa has more parallels with Airi here-

Some trivia about this unit under the read more!

- Tsukasa is the leader, the order is Tsukasa -> Rui -> Airi -> Mafuyu.

- As said with the previous band, Saki never got better, and because Tsukasa wanted to become a star that could even reach her in her hospital room, and went on the idol path. He still managed to forget why he wanted to become a star though.

- Their SEKAI is nearly an endless maze of old-looking stages, like a old theater scene, a kabuki scene, a steampunk scene, a retro TV show scene, a coliseum, etc.

- Lika MMJ, they’re a freelance group who stream on internet. One of their more popular series of stream, outside of their shows, is Tsukasa, Airi and Mafuyu testing Rui’s inventions.

- Even though Tsukasa is the unit leader, Airi is the one teaching the others the ropes into being an idol since, well, she’s the only one with idol experience here.

- Mafuyu still has her issues with her self and her true feelings. Furthermore, her mom doesn’t know that she joined an idol group, and only think that she is participating to a study group with genius like students like Rui. Mafuyu is also maintaining her anonymity by wearing a mask and going by the name Yuki. Surely, nothing bad is going to happen once her mom discover the truth.

- Airi and Mafuyu are in the same class, and once Airi learns about Mafuyu’s issues, she becomes dead set into helping her. This is partly due because she feels guilty about not having been able to help Ena in middle school, and is lowkey projecting her guilt and issues into Mafuyu. Still, in the group, Airi is Mafuyu’s biggest support (even if the whole group is trying to help Mafuyu)

are there any pairings from other pieces of media youd find comparable to mizurui? i personally find their dynamic so unique not bc the concept of a companion in solitude is necessarily rare, but bc most stories that use this concept (at least that I've personally consumed) arent meant to be about finding resolution; so we never rlly get to see their dynamic beyond their shared loneliness.

But with mizurui its the fact that they DO find their happy ending and are no longer dependent on each other, yet continue in each other's lives but now watching from afar. this is something i find so unique in their dynamic and i wonder if there are any other works that do this bc god its SO GOOD but ive yet to find anything even remotely similar to them

This is such a good ask… I’ve yet to find anything so directly transferable, so I wouldn’t say that any of these particularly scream Mizurui, but I love relationships based on a fundamental similarity or necessity that have a deep effect on their lives, but contain some element of distance or contention or having no better options. Relationships for which the word “friends” falls short of accurately describing.

Yugami and Chihiro from Yugami-kun Doesn’t Have Any Friends. This is the silliest of the bunch, for being a slice-of-life comedy manga with little particular stakes. Yugami is the school’s notorious weirdo for being a pain in the fucking ass to talk to and declaring that he does not need nor want friends, Chihiro is helped by him before she hears the rumours and decides he’s not that bad. Definitely a pain in the ass but like, tolerable. They don’t become friends. But…… they tolerate each other. I’m shit at summaries, Yugami-kun is just good and funny, and it has one of my favourite endings of any high school manga I’ve ever read. I love their slow-burn not-friendship. People that continue in each other’s lives for real…

Osanai Yuki and Kobato Jogoro from Shoshimin Series. The anime’s second season is still ongoing as I write this, so whether they particularly find resolution or a happy ending is up in the air and very likely up to interpretation, but damn if it isn’t interesting. For matter of being abnormal, finding fun or interesting or important something on an entirely different wavelength than the people around them, being hard to like and manipulative and getting into some trouble in middle school because of that, Kobato and Osanai form a pact to be normal together in high school. To cast aside their talents for sleuthing and holding grudges. They’re not very good at it. And it’s a real treat to watch, especially picking up in the second season. They understand each other like nobody else does and that understanding is debatably not a particularly good thing. Probably not exactly what you’re looking for, I would not say that Shoshimin Series is about changing for the better, but it’s real fucking fun, and though it’s not true I do often think of Mizurui while watching it.

Nagara and Mizuho (and Nozomi) from Sonny Boy. I don’t know how I could possibly describe any of this without doing a complete disservice to it or to you by over-explaining it, but Sonny Boy is genuinely what I hold to be one of the best anime ever created. Top 5 at very fucking least, easy. The comparison to Mizurui is sort of pure vibes, sorta tenuous, but I think you’ll get it once you get to the end and watch episode 12. Maybe it’s that middle school fucking sucks? I can’t really say if it’s necessarily similar to Mizurui at all, but I think if you like Mizuki and Rui you’ll like Sonny Boy. Probably. There’s a rooftop. Either way I would recommend it cause it’s incredible.

Neku and Joshua from The World Ends With You. Shutting out the world, wishing everyone would just disappear, removing yourself from the world to live with only the things you like where you won’t be outcasted, believing that it’s impossible to ever understand others or be understood in turn. What if you met someone exactly like you, and they really fucking suck like so goddamn bad, in part because they remind you of yourself, and in part because they’re the most infuriating person in the universe. And despite that rancidness, you come to trust them. Miraculously, you’ve found a friend, that really gets you, on a level you thought was impossible. So you don’t give up on the world. You don’t give up on yourself. You have to live, you have to reach out, because the world ends with you, and to expand your world you have to let other people in. If you’re looking for companions of necessity and themes of loneliness/misanthropy, self-recognition through the other, the nature of understanding and friendship, what it means to live, TWEWY’s got it for you, and Joshua and Neku have one of the relationships of all time in my opinion. It is words that can in a sense be said to be true that they “find their happy ending and are no longer dependent on each other, but continue in their lives watching from afar” but it’s reaaaaally funny how that’s true, and it will enrich your life immensely to find out how by playing the hit 2007 action-RPG The World Ends With You for Nintendo DS.

Eunyung and Haejoon from No Home. Two very different very similar people who for a while can’t exist in the same space without devolving into a physical altercation, forced to cohabitate, and develop a deep understanding of each other, because you’re like me. Another one of the relationships of all times, Eunyung and Haejoon change each other and their lives so entirely over the course of the manwha, it’s incredible to see how they evolve. They straight up fucking hate each other at the start of the series, and by the end they are the most positive relationship either of them have ever had. For matter of having been denied it elsewhere, finding home in each other. Shit’s crazy I always weep many multiple times even when rereading.

Kim Dokja and Yoo Sangah from Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint. This is kind of especially tenuous maybe, but this is a really good entry in the category of “two people who are less than friends but made a miserable environment a little less miserable through being there for each other” as co-workers at the same shitty company, y’know, before the apocalypse hits. Perhaps relatively less developed compared to the rest of this list which are the loadbearing relationships of their respective media, what is there is incredibly significant. ORV’s really fucking good at large too. If you’re at all interested in the themes of the impossibility of human connection, escapism through fiction, or the question of “what if the most miserable and neurotic person in the world was loved?” and can stomach 1.3 million words of at times roughly translated webnovel, ORV is a truly life-changing work.

And finally, of course, Vladimir and Estragon of Waiting for Godot. This is not a relationship with a resolution, they will continue their wait for Godot every time the play is performed, but for matter of being a comparison brought up in the text itself I would be remiss not to mention it. Tied together by being the only thing they can truly remember, waiting together, being together being only so slightly better than being alone. I make this comparison every other week, so here’s a different excerpt.

I can't believe the Jdrama of Hana Yori Dango did my girl Shigeru so dirty like bro wtf

So this is? Technically the second HYD post I'm writing here, and my first one still exists in draft form, it's just. A true mess, written before I finished either the manga or the jdrama which I've sorta been going through at the same time- I started with the jdrama, fell in love with the story, paused to go read the manga until the SECOND Yuki and Sojiro intermission during which I got frustrated* and decided to pause and go back to the jdrama and start it from the beginning and anyway----

I ADORE manga Shigure, like. I think it's impossible not to love her, and she was definitely one of the real shining stars of the story in the later parts. I love how her and Tsukushi end up mirroring Tsukasa and Rui (WHICH THE JDRAMA PLAYED UP BY DOING A PARALLEL SCENE OF RUI AND SHIGERU AND IT WAS GLORIOUS). I love how ultimately, she's sad and heartbroken about how things turned out with Tsukasa, and how she chooses to continuously try and learn how to put those intense feelings aside not only for herself, or Tsukasa, or even Tsukushi- which she very dearly loves- but for all of them and because it was ultimately the right thing to do by ALL of them. I love how easily I believed her when she says SHE'S Tsukushi's best friend, because, really, she was!** I LOVE her strange, amazing friendship with Sakurako, like, they're such an unlikely pair, and they worked SO well together in a way I never would have expected them to. Mostly though I just. I loved her existence as a character in the story, she was such an excellent mirror to both Sakurako and Rui, who are the only real "rivals" Tsukushi and Tsukasa ever have in the manga (Fs in the chat for Kazuya, the poor guy never stood a chance I am ignoring Umi she is a bitch and I hate her she got off WAY too easy for the actual malevolent shit she pulled)

Shigeru also takes part in my beloved love-rivals to best friends trope, I love that shit so much!! If Tsukasa and Rui can both love the same girl and remain friends, Shigeru and Tsukushi should too, and they do!!!! Except that, of course, they don't really in the jdrama, because they were never actually friends there and unfortunately Shigeru is presented as like. Weirdly way more observant, calculating, and even cruel than how in the manga she was mostly just. Taking Tsukushi and Tsukasa's words at face value and doing her best to make both relationships work at the same time. Like she had her bitch moment in both versions but in the manga in was much more of a "I'm extremely emotional and lashing out as a result" than how she just,,,, continously emotionally tortures Tsukushi and Tsukasa, and straight up ignores them when they talk to her about the situation, like BRO I WAS NOT A FAN OF HER IN THE MERGER EPISODE, WTF!! Also then she just,,,, fucks off to NY, and personally I am more heartbroken by THAT than by Kazuya and Kinsan just NOT EXISTING IN THE JDRAMA (which, just to be clear.... I AM DEVASTATED BY, THEY'RE BOTH SO MUCH FUN!!!), like. I guess we just never get to see the Sakurako and Shigeru friendship, or Shigeru being just. The best in every subsequent appearance 😢

Anyway she's been gone for five seconds and I miss her already, BRING ME BACK MY GIRL AND ALSO LET TSUKUSHI ACTUALLY CONSIDER HER A FRIEND THIS TIME!!!! AND SAKURAKO AND SHIGERU SPIN OFF WHEN?????

*So tbh the reason my first post is such a mess is mostly me writing it immediately at this point, when I was very frustrated and I had a toigh time being coherent- long story short (might still edit and release that post someday though), Iprobably only had an issue with it because the jdrama did that part MUCH better by making it actually like. Connect with the rest of the story rather than essentially just be one LONG oneshot that completely disrupted the flow of the story, I don't think I'd have hated it as much if I read it first tbh- it's also like, the only case of me strongly feeling that one version was clearly superior over the other, because despite the differences and the relatively weird exclusive plot points each version has, I somehow like both version just as much. The Shigeru case definitively comes close though lmao

**Fr though adding Okami-san in the jdrama definitely helped solidify Tsukushi and Yuki's friendship, and also give Yuki a more satisfying role in the story other than "Tsukushi's longtime best friend who is mostly irrelevant aside from her and Sojiro's weird one shots", like. She was constantly present and her transformation from a weak naive girl to someone strong who can protect herself and help others was much more satisfying

An uncomfortable air settled fast. “Asahina-san, I’d offer you a role in our troupe if I didn’t know you worked with Mizuki and her music group.” A beat before Rui spoke again. “You must be a good actor if you can fool everyone but Emu.”

Mafuyu blinked. How did he- “I’m sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I am friends with Mizuki-chan, yes, but I don’t-”

“I’m afraid I’ve heard a bit of your act from Mizuki’s side, Asahina-san.” Mafuyu tensed. “She kept it vague, but… Seeing you and how Emu reacts to the smiles you give… Well, it doesn’t take an Einstein to connect those dots.” Rui explained. He put a hand to his chin. “A friend who struggles with finding themselves…”

Mizuki kept it from being tied to her. As nice as that was if this Rui could figure out that connection just based on her younger schoolmate’s reaction to her smiles and a vague statement… “I… See.” Only dropping the facade a bit, she let the shine of her eyes fade enough to note her change to the male in front of her. “And Mizuki-chan hasn’t said more?”

Rui nodded in confirmation. “Besides she wishes she could help more. Not a peep more about the issues. However, I never meant to be a flaw to your ‘good girl’ act. I apologise.” A bow that was deep enough to note true sincerity made Mafuyu question Emu’s friends more. “I merely did not see the merit in not letting you know I realized.” A hum from him and she raised an eyebrow. “Mizuki let it slip you all would be coming to the show if possible. I hope to see you there.”

“OI, RUI! WE’RE WAITING ON YOU!” Tsukasa, with that sharp, loud voice, called out.

“Til we meet again, Asahina-chan.” Another bow, though this one was much more of a stage bow, she noted. Rui flashed a smile, then got in the truck with the rest.

And… Despite apparently scaring Emu, the pinkette reached half of her body out of the window and waved enthusiastically. “Bye, Asahina-senpai!!! See you Sunday!!!”

Mafuyu felt her cheeks heat up. And for the first time in a long while, she genuinely noticed that she wanted something.

ᅠᅠᅠ...She wanted to see that show on Sunday.

That night was… Distracting, to say the least. “YUKI!”

Mafuyu jumped at Amia — Mizuki — shouting her username.

“Geeze, you turned your camera on like the rest of us did and you keep staring off into your phone like you’re waiting. What’s up?”

Mafuyu rolled her eyes. She wasn’t staring into her phone… was she? “I’m waiting for Hoshino-san to text me back… She texted me before I got on the call, but it is late…” She put her phone down. “She might have fallen asleep.”

Mafuyu never thought she’d hope her acting was enough to fool her groupmates about something like getting a phone number. At least the part about Ichika messaging her first wasn’t a lie…

“Yuki? Are you… Crushing on that Hoshino-san you and K know?” Enanan — Shinonome Ena — asked, making the pale girl blush more.

“You couldn’t be farther off if you were on the opposite side of the universe, Enanan. I don’t have a crush on Hoshino-san.” Not that I know how a crush feels… Mafuyu thought. Mizuki hummed in that playful manner that irked Mafuyu, making her glare at her camera.

“Ack- Listen! I was just thinking!” Amia defended. “It’s super clear you’re distracted, so why don’t we meet up in SEKAI and try and help you out! Sound fair?” She lowered her hands, which she moved up as a sort of extra way of proving her innocence. “Besides… I think K could use a break. She looks like she’s struggling and I think we’ve all known each other long enough to know that if K is struggling on a composition, it means she’s been up for too long~”

After a bit more listening to the other three, Mafuyu clicked on Kuyamu to Kaite Mirai.

She was surprised that she was last in there. More so, she was surprised that all the Virtual Singers were there as well. How long had she sat in silence thinking the others were talking still?

“You are really not doing well, huh…” Mizuki dared to speak first. “This issue must be crazy big.”

Mafuyu moved over as Ena talked. “Just to make sure… This isn’t about your mom or dad, right? Cause, like, I can always let you sleep over and — even if i hate it the idea of it — I can use my dad’s name to get you away from your house for a bit-”

“It’s not my mother. Not yet, anyway…” Mafuyu admitted, a bit colder than she meant to let the words slip. “Hoshino-san texted me about something and I answered. Then I asked her if…” She tried to calm her cheeks a bit. “If she could give me the phone number of another first year. Otori Emu.”

“Oh! I know her! She’s a great model.” Mizuki noted. “Not that I have her number. She kinda just appears around the area I’m in when I’m in a funk and it’s like the world is saying she’s the solution.” She shrugged. Mafuyu decided that was a topic for another time.

Uta is one of the Reflectors on the antagonists' side that assists in stealing the feelings away from people by taking their fragments. While the other antagonists seem to have a higher purpose for doing this, Uta is mostly there for her own reasons. Namely, just for kicks.

[SPOILERS BELOW; SPOILER-FREE VERSION HERE]

Uta is unique among the other reflectors. She states that as she grew up, she never experienced feelings like everyone else. They were mostly shallow and she never could feel much for anyone and never got joy out of anything. That is until she was stabbed on the street, causing her to develop a fascination with pain. Not just hers, she starts to enjoy the pain of others as well.

She joins Mio and Niina to take the fragments of those experiencing negative feelings and pain. Therefore, she can see them suffering before leaving them as soulless husks. While the others seem to see it as a necessary evil, Uta enjoys the whole thing. Especially during the Princess Yuki situation. She was out of commission during battle and still went against orders to rest to restore her powers just to stir some stuff up. She has a deep craving for stimulation and pain (either her own or others) is the only way she can experience it. That and some trolling of Niina.

In addition, she shows that she's very manipulative as well. During the Princess Yuki situation, she DMed Yuki on her blog and got to her by exposing her as someone who wasn't a reflector and couldn't take away people's feelings like she promised. After that, she spread comments on her blog so that Yuki would be overwhelmed and her fragment would be exposed for the taking. She also gets inside Niina's head when she's not feeling good about resonating with her. She picks at her devotion to Mio as a sister and points out that she's not a true sister, driving her to resonate with Mio to see the resulting despair since she knows Mio is hiding something.

She is wholly selfish and has no true loyalty to anyone. She has a bit of a flirtatious fascination with her Reflector partner Niina, but that's only because she finds her reactions to her trolling interesting. Outside of that, if she bores her, she'll move on to something else. Even when fighting against Ruka, Momo, and Hiori, she can't help but charge in at full speed, potentially jeopardizing the mission against Niina's protests. Uta's goal is to have fun and feel alive, consequences be damned.

As Niina has a change of heart, she proudly denounces having feelings for others while willingly going after her now. While she seems disappointed when she sees her unconscious, it is more likely that Uta is only upset because she doesn't have her favorite toy anymore.

  How many different characters can an anime have before things get too hairy? Or — furry?

  Animal crime drama ODDTAXI takes its menagerie of a cast very seriously. ODDTAXI is about walrus taxi driver Odokawa, a runaway girl, organized crime, idols, and city living. It shares a “panoramic” day-in-the-life angle … with a twist. Despite its unique anthropomorphic animal character designs, its world is grounded in a reality where species is the least of anyone’s concerns.

  EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

  You won’t find one-dimensional prey versus predator dynamics or a shallow status quo vaguely resembling a food chain. ODDTAXI’s cast unexpectedly finds themselves in Rashomon-esque contradictions and conspiracies with all the modern conveniences of social media.

  Mystery Kiss members Shiho Ichimura and Yuki Mitsuya contemplate their future

  Rather than tell a linear story, ODDTAXI insists on showing us offbeat paths, as if we were a city-dweller bumping into eccentric personalities across the street. What matters most is first impressions: your job, gender, income. Even the most mundane facts can change everything.

  Sensational idol Rui Nikaido and fanboy Shun Imai at a polaroid event

ODDTAXI hits the ground running introducing about a dozen major characters, zig-zagging perspectives between cab rides. Until Episode 4 — “Tanaka’s Revolution.” This anomaly in pacing throws a wrench into everything we assume we know. After giving a random, supposedly one-off character an episode about his moral crusade, nothing can be taken for granted. It’s a risky move, but it pays off.

  When you accidentally turn on selfie mode

  ODDTAXI’s “panoramic” pacing gets away with this by adding more pieces to an already incomplete puzzle. By introducing every character with the intent to break first impressions, we are forced to reconsider how ensemble casts make a mystery richer.

  WHAT ARE THE ODDS?

  Odokawa is boring by design. He’s a 41-year-old with a laid-back attitude toward essentially everything, including gangster baboons pointing guns at his head. Odokawa says he’s like an authentic bartender: someone who knows keeping secrets is half the job. Keeping a missing high school girl in his apartment feels more like an aside than a plot twist — the first question asked in Episode 1 is answered before the credits roll.

  Shirakawa rides with Odokawa

  Odokawa’s private cab service is for everyone. His ability to make easy rapport might as well be a façade depending on who gets in. Alpaca nurse Shirakawa is stealing pharmaceutical medication, Odokawa assumes she’s just naive. We catch glimpses of a hopeless bachelor trying to find a girlfriend, a struggling idol group, gangsters, a student trying to go viral — what are they all hiding? There’s a niche for everyone in this tidy metropolitan ecosystem, even if it’s just “bachelor” or “idol fanboy.” First impressions lead us to assumptions any anonymous taxi driver would have. This is why introducing so many players at once works.

  Odokawa recounts seeing Shirakawa meeting with notorious gangster, Dobu

  Dominos begin falling when Shirakawa’s activity leads back to a violent gangster named Dobu. She’s played as a possible love interest to melt Odokawa’s old, icy heart. It’s not exactly a slow burn, but by the time Odokawa becomes suspicious of this innocent-looking nurse, ODDTAXI’s omniscient bird’s-eye view of the city makes everything situational irony. Text messages we aren’t supposed to see, shady yet familiar figures in alleys … even when we’re not behind the wheel, we know just enough to piece it together.

  AGAINST TYPECASTING

  Rui Nikaido behind the scenes at an idol Halloween event

  Toy poodle Rui Nikaido leads the girl group trio Mystery Kiss. ODDTAXI feeds us snippets of Mystery Kiss on TV and the radio, but never the big picture. Unsurprisingly, the idol industry isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Mystery Kiss is presenting a face-façade. It’s not even subtle: Rui’s backup dancers are contractually obligated to wear masks so Rui stands out — quite literally making them “two-faced” with contempt. By Episode 5, Shiho suggests that Rui is so ambitious she might’ve already killed someone to get ahead. Mystery Kiss is a microcosm of ODDTAXI’s ensemble cast at large. Everyone wears masks even when they don’t want to.

  Pretty in pink, better in leather.

Episode 2 shows Mystery Kiss fanboy Shun having a sincere heart-to-heart with Rui during an event. She tells him the business is hard and sales are underwhelming. Afterward, we see Rui and her manager behind the scenes: a jaded-looking Rui sports a punk leather jacket. Even the tell-all idol persona Shun saw earlier wasn’t the “real” Rui. In fact, Mystery Kiss’ manager, a bodyguard-sized fox, is withholding information from the girls. ODDTAXI doesn’t waste time putting its ensemble through the wringer of mask-breaking situations. First, come the disguises, then always harsh reality.

  PROTAGONIST SYNDROME

  Let’s come full circle. By the end of Episode 3, ODDTAXI gives us enough hints to realize Shirakawa and Mystery Kiss are perhaps part of something bigger. Not to mention the uncanny resemblance between an 18-year-old and Shiho partaking in dubious behavior on a dating app, or a possible gangster conspiracy against Odokawa. Unsuccessful manzai comedians confide to Odokawa about the competitive entertainment industry, while two policemen meerkat brothers play favorites with criminals. The world is an unfair anti-meritocracy, but no one’s insisting they’re the special hero who will fix it. Except for Tanaka.

  Tanaka cries tears of joy when he finally pulls a dodo in the mobile game “Zooden”

This is why “Tanaka’s Revolution” is refreshing despite being so jarring. In Episode 3, Odokawa nearly has a hit-and-run with Tanaka, causing him to break his phone. A dodo flashing on his screen before it shatters: “The bird that went extinct without ever learning to fly,” Tanaka monologues. “Perhaps I was projecting myself onto it. It was just like me.”

  "No, if I died here without achieving anything, I wouldn't even be Rare. I'd just be normal."

  What happens next breaks convention by switching gears to the first-person. Tanaka’s childhood obsession with erasers mutates into a life-consuming compulsion to acquire a rare gacha character. ODDTAXI’s “panoramic” perspective is stretched to painful extremes by unexpectedly introducing a narrator so self-aware of his obsession with status it emotionally wrecks him.

  SHARE THE ROAD

  Compared to Odokawa’s perpetual rotation of passengers, Tanaka’s voice is straightforward. He details his backstory until we know him better than Odokawa. Why frame an episode like this? Tanaka’s narcissism. It’s what makes him, and this episode, black sheep. In a world where everyone’s a main character, Tanaka suffers from toxic protagonist syndrome. His inability to accept reality for what it is leads him down a violent crusade. This episode doesn’t just serve to contextualize Tanaka in the ensemble itself but is also a warning against seeing only black and white.

  Odokawa drives with Mystery Kiss’s manager

With clever delivery of characters being in the right time and place, ODDTAXI is a rare breed of drama that prioritizes nuance. It’s a true testament to how ensemble casts best reflect the messy, unpredictable aspects of life. Although Odakawa isn’t without his own biases — no one is a perfect judge of character — you couldn’t have a better guide for this gallery of oddballs. When we start thinking of everyone as an empathic eccentric starring in their own backseat confessional down a bumpy road, we learn to listen.

DoB: 25th of May I Son of Isami Aldini and Megumi Tadokoro | Loves Plushies & Fishing | Dislikes Cigarette Smoke & Dark Humor

A shy but practically angelic guy from Tohoku. Looks out for others a lot, which also shows in his cooking. Very well-versed in both Japanese cooking as well as Italian cooking. Often falls into the shadow of his much bolder cousin, but doesn’t make any attempts to get out of said shadow.

Kaori Hayama

DoB: 17th of February I Daughter of Akira Hayama and Hisako Arato | Loves Gardening & Pastel Colors | Dislikes Mess & Snails

The current valedictorian of the 115th Generation, who more than often gets a sort of nobility attributed to her by the rest of the students. Known as the “Gatekeeper to the Fountain of Eternal Youth” or “Youth Preserver” for short, as her medicinal cooking is famous for energizing it’s customers. Has her goal firmly set on the top of Totsuki and has no interest in socializing whatsoever.

Mika Aldini

DoB: 9th of August I Daughter of Takumi Aldini and Ikumi Mito | Loves Dancing & Romance Movies | Dislikes Rain & Gardening

A fiery, bold girl from Tuscany, who appeared in Totsuki as a transfer student in her second year of middle school. Specialised in Italian Food as well as the usage of Meat. Up to any kind off challenge thrown her way.

Lola Nakiri

DoB: 17th of November I Daughter of Ryo Kurokiba and Alice Nakiri | Loves  Limousines & Heavy Metal | Dislikes The Color Pink & Being Bored

The daughter of the headmistress who’s certain she can do whatever she wants. Well-versed in the usage of Seafood and utilization of Molecular Gastronomy, but known for putting more focus on the Seafood-aspect of her dishes. Teases everyone and anyone with no mercy.

Mona Nakiri

Kazuo Mimasaka

DoB: 9th of March I Son of Subaru Mimasaka and Nao Sadatsuka | Loves Every Romance Cliche Out There & His Camera  | Dislikes Mika’s Fanclub & Aggressive Dogs Barking

A very eccentric member of the 115th Generation who easily scares people with his mere presence. Truth be told, he’s completely harmless. Traces other people’s work but adds his personal spin on it by working in foul-smelling ingredients. Has a massive crush on Mika Aldini and is a hopeless romantic. 

Yasu Ibusaki

DoB: 2nd of March I Son of Shun Ibusaki and Ryoko Sakaki | Loves Forest Walks & Adzuki Bean Paste | Dislikes Gossiping & Tight Clothes

A peaceful and friendly young man, whose gentleness often gives off a big-brother-vibe to many. Knows a lot about Fermenting and produces his own Sake, I mean Rice Juice. His true passion is in the art of smoking however. Much more competitive than he lets on. 

Chieko Marui

DoB: 5th of December I Daughter of Zenji Marui and Yuki Yoshino | Loves  Chess & Matcha | Dislikes Metal Music & Irresponsibility

A highly intelligent girl and the ace of the Enomoto-Seminar that focuses on literacy-research about cooking. Incorporates said research excellently into her dishes while additionally having a talent for Wild Game, even taking interest in breeding. Known fairly well for loud complains and long rants, usually referring to her dormmates. 

Hideyoshi Kawashima

DoB: 19th of August I Son of Shoji Sato and Urara Kawashima | Loves Himself & Parties (in Chieko’s room)  | Dislikes Broken Mirrors & Studying

The overly arrogant emcee who’s known to host a bunch of events on Totsuki. Through and through an attention-whore who does has a fair share of admires though, being honest. Spends all of this time where he is not loudly praising himself with bickering either with Daisuke or Chieko.

Daisuke Aoki

DoB: 26th of October I Son of Daigo Aoki and Yua Sasaki | Loves Retro Stuff (mostly 70s and 80s) & His Guitar  | Dislikes Horror Movies & Dangerous Animals

A soft-spoken and shy emcee who hosts Shokugekis and other sort off events on Totsuki. Much more friendly than his childhood-friend Hideyoshi, but overlooked regardless most of the time. Bickers a ton with Hideyoshi.

Emi Kusunoki

DoB: 25th of July I Daughter of Rentaro Kusunoki & Mea Yanai | Loves Saunas & The Smell of Gasoline  | Dislikes Still Being Without a Boyfriend & Libraries

An often brash young girl who’s also known as the major Gossip Girl on Totsuki, that loves to hear and share all kinds of rumors around. Specializes in Heating. Wishes for a boyfriend with a motorcycle.

Itsuki Kumai

DoB: 10th of March I Son of Shigemichi Kumai and Rui Kofuru | Loves Self-Deprecative Humor & Edgy Rock Bands  | Dislikes Colorful Clothes & Phone Ringing

Very silent but also awfully pessimistic. Itsuki has a large talents with vegetables and herbs, as he tries to cook as vegetarian as Totsuki’s tasks allow him to. Additionally he has large knowledge around the cuisine of North-Africa. Forgot how to smile long ago. 

114th Generation (The 2nd Years who constantly argue for the most part)

Hiraku Yukihira

DoB: 13th of April I Son of Soma Yukihira and Erina Nakiri | Loves All Thing Decadent & Squid | Dislikes Laundry & Elite 10 Paperwork

Ever since entering Totsuki as a transfer student a year ago, Hiraku quickly worked himself upwards as one of the most, if not the most, admired chef of the school. His sensitive sense of taste, the so-called “Tongue Blessed by Angels” or “Holy Tongue” for short gives him a great advantage at cooking. He’s awfully unorganized however and much of a dense airhead.

Akio Hayama

DoB: 26th of February I Son of Akira Hayama and Hisako Arato | Loves Clipboards & Traveling to the Middle East  | Dislikes Stains & Organizing Hiraku’s Fanmail

Hiraku’s loyal and diligent secretary, who does not seem to mind just how chaotic Hiraku can be sometimes. Inherited his father’s sense of smell and is therefore outstandingly talented in the usage of spices and creating fragrant dishes. Very friendly but also easily nervous. 

Suzume Hojo

DoB: 11th of April I Daughter of Terunori Kuga and Miyoko Hojo | Loves  Memes & Fans | Dislikes Sitting Still & Sexism

The bouncy, energetic president of the Chinese RS. Therefore of course specializes in Chinese Cuisine. Much of a laid-back jokester but does look out for the younger students and takes certain matters fairly serious. Shouldn’t be underestimated.

DoB: 29th of November I Son of Etsuya Eizan and Nene Kinokuni | Loves His Smartphone & Jazz Music | Dislikes Slow or No Internet & Suzume’s Jokes

A materialistic, cold-hearted young man who’s already involved in consulting-work despite the young age. His cooking relies on his intensive knowledge on the chemical components in his ingredients and how to utilize them. Is incredibly intelligent and fairly good at tricking people into trusting him. 

Ai Kabutoyama

Kiyoko is a proper but spoiled young lady who’s friendly as long as she receives the respect she thinks she deserves. She’s specialized in Japanese Sweets, but does know how to make Western desserts as well plus Sushi of course. Very fashionable and has a booming Instagram. 

Masashi Eizan

DoB: 13th of May I Son of Etsuya Eizan and Nene Kinokuni | Loves Classical Japanese Music & Kiyoko’s Daifuku | Dislikes Everything He Considers Indecent & Being told to rely too much on his Father and his little Brother Shigeo

Masashi is overly serious and strongly values rules and customs. Considers himself superior than practically everyone on Totsuki, save for Noboru and Kiyoko. Specializes in Traditional Japanese Cuisine and is known for an extraordinary talent with Soba. Has a very short temper. 

Ran Mimasaka

DoB: 1st of June I Daughter of Subaru Mimasaka | Loves Her Motorcycle & Her Laptop | Dislikes Bullying & Not Being Active For Too Long

Ran is a calm, friendly girl but also slightly witty young woman. She utilizes foul-smelling ingredients for her dishes. Ran is also often perceived to be the “most normal” one of the Mimasaka-sibling. In actuality, she’s excellent at fishing and gaining information and is incredibly informed about basically every person walking Totsuki.

Moe Saito

DoB: 20th of December I Daughter of Somei Saito and Momo Akanegakubo | Loves Balletts & Bears (primarily Pandas) | Dislikes People She Doesn't Know Touching Her Ribbon & Ripped Jeans

Moe is very stoic and barely ever truly emotes. Should she ever actually smile, its a sign of her being beyond happy. She’s a Sushi-Chef whose main gimmick it is to make the Sushi as cute as possible. Also has a great talent for Bentos and while it’s not her main focus, she does know how to make desserts. Speaks dryly but also very bluntly.

Kei Eizan

DoB: 5th of July I Son of Etsuya Eizan & Nene Kinokuni | Loves Video Games & Tigers | Dislikes Ties & The Scent of Coffee 

Kei often has troubles with making a good first impressions as he’s rather grouchy or even aggressive at points and also makes usage of a very foul language. Not to mention the reputation attached to his surname. He does have a good heart however and an actual sense for justice, which shows in his friendship with the frequently bullied Ayano Mimasaka who he befriends and would protect at all costs.

Kasumi’s PT Outfit Analysis

Tell me what do these two have in common?

If you said “Cat theme” you are correct! If not, well then buckle up my dudes cause this is gonna be fun~! :D (I also want to take the time to point out, while this isn’t want I’m talking about, I do like this fan artist’s perspective on her gloves :D)

I know what you’re thinking, and no I’m not smoking anything I don’t do that, but Kasumi really does have cat thief themed origins (and no not because of the fan art, didja click on it? it’s cute!). I realized it after realizing she was a gymnast and was like “Why? Why does she get a gymnast theme? How does this fit with the outlaw theme? Has there been a thief who had gymnast outfit?....wait....could it be.....omg it IS!” AND THE ANSWER IS YES! 4 thieves actually, 3 are sisters in one series, and 1 is an expy of those sisters by the same author in his other work. If you know who I’m talking about I’m talking about.....CAT’S EYE! (and Phantom Thief 305 from City Hunter, I dunno the meaning of the name tho)

Let’s start with Cat’s Eye (not a 100% expert in it, but I know more than City Hunter tbh). Cat’s Eye is about a trio of sisters (Hitomi the middle who is the main character, Rui the oldest sister, and Ai the youngest) stealing things using their multiple skill sets (such as gymnastics), partially because they want to contact their missing dad who is also a thief (and their attempts to contact him are through the calling cards and stealing the items in hopes he comes as well). And....that’s basically it I think (been awhile since I read the manga and I’m in the process of re-reading it now). Movie wise, it seems they are in the process of trying to rescue him (hard to find info, no eng subtitles for me to watch so efsljdfl;aj).

Anne and Kasumi are the biggest shout outs to Cat’s Eye than anyone else (tho you could argue Cat’s eye is probs the reason Makoto drives a Motorcycle and Futaba is an semi-orange themed tech genius, and Haru who is “Noir” tho I don’t feel like looking up who came first, her or the Cat’s Eye Pachinko machine cause it’s not important). Anne’s outfit is more a shout-out to the Cat’s Eye Movie version while Kasumi’s is more a shout-out to the original manga/anime. Let’s focus on the Cat’s Eye movie for a second tho.

This isn’t the first time Cat’s Eye movie was used as inspiration for Persona. Back in P2 Tamaki Uchida dressed as Ai (the youngest sister of Cat’s Eye, but is the lead role in the movie), as the actress she is based off of (Yuki Uchida) played Ai in the movie.

Anne, however, seems to be based on Hitomi outfit with some Rui flare to it (they differ slightly)

(btw the movie opens up with an anime sequence before going full live action, Hitomi Left, Rui Right I think for both pics, Ai is in the middle for the bottom pic, and recolored Anne for better comparison and also because I can 8U)

I know what you are thinking, “But what about Catwoman????” I think she’s still related to Cat’s Eye tho. Catwoman came first in creation, and Catwoman was the first to use the leather outfits (tbh, mask wise, Tamaki’s mask/ears seem to draw from the Catwoman 60s tv show outfit), and it seems she/Batman were the inspiration for the movie costumes. Also considering how Persona likes to use Batman, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the cat theme stuff was also Batman/Catwoman related as well as Cat’s Eye. So there’s still a connection to Catwoman esp with the movie! 

Another possible connection to the movie is Anne’s name, specifically “Anne,” as the person who went by the stage name “Anri/杏里” (I mean Anne is just the  杏 kanji but still) who sings the theme song “Cat’s Eye 2000″ for the movie. Fun fact.

Now let’s look at the manga/anime, where it’s Kasumi’s time to shine (tho Anne will come back up).

As you can see they’ve been redesigned a few times (btw Hitomi’s colors in the first vol of Cat’s eye is actually blue with an orange ribbon, it was changed to yellow later it seems, also the top right is a spinoff manga of Cat’s Eye called Cat’s Eye: Ai where Ai is the MC)

As you can see, the girl who is mostly in the blue is Hitomi, and she has a tendency to wear a chocker with her leotard. Kinda like.......Kasumi! 

Recolored with blue to highlight the comparison (also because I NEED COLOR IN HER DESIGN ATLUS LORD GIVE ME STRENGTH DX) 

Fun fact, Hitomi I believe is a gymnast and she utilizes her skills as a thief (and thus where we get the gymnast as a thief outlaw theme and why it only works for Kasumi/gymnasts and not runners like Ryuji). 

But Kasumi also has similarities between her and Ai, both have red in their theme, both I think are first years. Also, while Ai isn’t as strong or skilled as her older sisters in fighting, she is the most agile (which we don’t know if Kasumi is in the same boat but it’s worth noting just in case). Another thing about Ai, is her connection to Tamaki up above, Tamaki who is based off the actress who played Ai was in the fencing club (which Yuki Uchida was also a fencer), and what weapon does Kasumi wield? A one handed sword similar to other fencers in Persona (like Mitsuru), so woot we’ve come full circle on that! (also if Kasumi is Hamuko reincarnated, or Hamuko’s younger sister, it should be noted that one of Hamuko’s theme colors is orange along with pink and red so fklsdjfsajf; bonus points if that comes true!)

Kasumi’s mask is also probably based on the Cat’s Eye calling card (or at least it follows a similar pattern):

Same point pattern, same eye shape and design (it’d also explain why it’s so thick, cause the emblem is thick looking too 8U)

So I mentioned we’d come back to Anne, and here we are! There is one last thing that is similar to Anne and the Kisugi sisters, and it’s that they are all hafus! The sisters are all half german, and Hitomi looks just like her western grandmother if Hitomi had blonde hair, and later dyes her hair blonde for her thieving:

Now onto City Hunter, which....I think is the biggest evidence that Kasumi was based off these people. And it’s this girl:

The girl with the glasses is the same one as the girl in the same girl in the green leotard (the one in the red isn’t a thief, but was wearing one to match the other girl while they stole a flower). 

This is the first episode this girl shows up (only one I’ve seen too tbh), she’s actually 17/a 2nd year iirc.... And guess what her name is? Kasumi Aso. Kasumi is spelled the same way too (aka only in hirigana)! From my research she only steals what is commissioned of her (I think she steals back what is stolen from other people). She has connection to flowers like Kasumi Yoshizawa (Aso is connected to the [black] tulip, Yoshizawa has flowers on her belt). Both are pretty unassuming in their civilian outfits too tbh. (tho slightly off topic, fun fact, there was a Japanese hafu rhythmic gymnast named Kasumi, I’ve been wanting to post about that for awhile but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s who IRL Yoshizawa was based off of)

Sadly I don’t know much else about Aso, I need to read more of City Hunter to find out (even tho she’s not a super main character), and tbh this is where I kinda end with the Kasumi/Anne and Cat’s Eye/PT 305/Catwoman analysis. But I’ll use this time to talk about a few misc stuff and maybe a few theories related to cat themed thief ladies:

P5 probably got the “Thief who works at a cafe during the day (and the Cafe name also is a reference to their thieving as well as possibly housing a cat)” from Cat’s Eye and City hunter (which take place in Tokyo/Shinjuku, tho in different locations), as the Kisugi Sisters work at their cafe called “Cat’s Eye,” and Aso being their expy, also works at a cafe by the same name (tho it’s run by different people cause it’s in a different/parallel universe). 

I wouldn’t be surprised if Tamaki’s tendency to house a Nekomata in her workplace to be similar to the kitty (Tiger I think it’s name is) that Ai has at the cafe (esp considering, again, Yuki Uchida played Ai). 

According to the Japanese fan wiki of Cat’s Eye, in the sequel “Cat’s Eye: Ai,” the Cafe is moved to a new location, which is Kichijoji, which is the new area that has been unlocked in P5R (maybe a certain cafe will be available for us to wander into? :0 Or maybe Kasumi works at a cafe XP or maybe is connected to the billiards place, tho that DARTSLIVE3 screenshot seems to have a “cafe” poster in the background so maaaaaaaybe that’s a cafe XP)

Part of me wonders if Mitsuru’s Arena outfit is related more to Black Cat, due to the signature “white fur” both characters wear. 

Kasumi Y’s hairstyle (aka if her hair was down, so basically we are going off her bangs) is similar to Hitomi (at least the Pachinko machine ver)

Anne’s circle zipper designs might be more of a shout-out to Marvel’s Black Cat, not that Catwoman hasn’t had that as well, but I don’t feel like figuring out who did the circle zipper first 8U 

Satomi Tadashi dressed up as Zorro and was romantically involved with Takami. Anne who is a Cat’s Eye expy is crushed on by Mona (who wields Zorro). And Kasumi, another Cat’s Eye expy, looks like a Hamuko Expy, while Mona’s human form looks like a Minato Expy. 

Kasumi has a similar black mask with silver line design (not the mask shape itself, the line design) as a woman named “Noir”(?) who appears in the Cat’s Eye Pachinko Machine (yes I did come across interesting things, no I don’t know what her deal is or really who she is tbh cause I think she’s a pachinko original 8U ;w;)

So yeah just gonna kinda end it here awkwardly. FYI this doesn’t mean you HAVE to like her outfit (you have every right to dislike or like it tbh), it’s just a history lesson, and explaining how it fits the outlaw/PT theme, where’s Ryuji’s track or Haru’s ballet doesn’t.

Oh! Edit cause I forgot, if you push her mask up over head, it might look like cat’s ears, just a theory tho (of course it might look like devil horns but so does Anne’s so fklsjdfk;aj;faj;f take this for what you will):
