So.... This game is 2 years old now huh?
Honestly... I don't think i have a TON to say about this game. It's just a great ass fucking video game that has given me a lot of fun and great memories!
This game came out during my final year of school, which is kinda funny considering that Splatoon 3 acts like a "finale" to a trilogy. It's interesting how those kinds of things work out eh? Splatoon 2 came out at the start of my secondary education, and Splatoon 3 came out at the tail end of my final year.
I remember thinking before the game came out, "why do we need a Splatoon 3? This is pointless, it's just more Splatoon 2." And then my mind was quickly changed once i got to play the Splatfest test fire and the actual game itself.....
I completed ROTM in such a short amount of time and i documented my reactions to my friends. Although i was spoiled in that Deep Cut had boss fights and Mr. Grizz was the final boss, ROTM still gave me a giant smile to my face all the way through. It was so fun, so charming and just a really good single player experience.
One of the things that i LOVE about Splatoon 3 is the vibe. I just love the location of Splatsville, i love the aesthetics, the lighting, the model improvements from Splatoon 2, the music, it's my favourite art style/aesthetic out of any of the Splatoon games by far. It just feels so polished, i don't know how to exactly describe it.
Also the fact that this game won best multiplayer game of 2022 over CALL OF DUTY! OVERWATCH 2 AND MULTIVERSUS MAKES ME SO GIDDY AND HAPPY!
PEOPLE GOT MAD ABOUT THIS AND THAT MAKES ME WANNA EVIL LAUGH! All of those fucking depressed and sad Call of Duty players who whine and complain about how "wahh modern gaming sucks!! There's no good games anymore wahhh!! It's all microtransactions wahhh!!" BITCH! SPLATOON 3 IS LITERALLY THE GAME YOU'VE BEEN ASKING FOR!! Yet you won't play it because it's on Nintendo huh? Yeah... You're a fucking PUSSY!! YOU'RE WEAK!! You're SCARED to be seen as less of a manly man!! You only wanna play games with oily dirty buff men.... Yet you call others who play games like Splatoon gay? Hmm..... Sounds like you're a wittle insecureeeeee!!!!
Have fun rotting in microtransaction hell you LOSERS!! GAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyways.... uh.... sorry....
I also fucking love Deep Cut too. I thought i wasn't gonna like these guys and i remember thinking when i first saw them "oh... okayyyy..."
But now? I love these bastards.
I love their dynamic and how they are bandits but they actually wanna help the people back in Splatsville. That is such a cool and unique take to have for Idol characters. The Squid Sisters are very cutesy and so are Off the Hook, but Deep Cut aren't. They are loud, messy, chaotic, in your face, rude, etc. They are about contrast and the character designers did a phenomenal job at conveying that theme via their backgrounds and looks.
Another thing that i love about Splatoon 3 is that it also acts as a celebration of things that have come before, Inkopolis Plaza and Square return as hubs, old colour combos from previous games act as loading screens, most of the music returns in the jukebox, it rewards long time fans for sticking around and for a long running franchise IT'S SUPER IMPORTANT to have that stuff!!!
Seeing the improvements in the model quality from Splatoon 1 to 3 genuinely makes me kinda emotional, it shows how far we've come in just a little under 10 years...
It really homes in on the point that... These characters, have grown up with us.... The Squid Sisters are about to reach their mid 20s, Pearl is nearly 30 fucking years old!!!
And the last thing i wanna bring up before i talk about the Grand Fest...
...Is Side Order.
This fucking DLC... My god... Being able to experience it by myself and just enjoy the stuff i was seeing, being able to SCREAM AND CRY AS MUCH I WANT WAS SO IMPORTANT TO ME DUDE!
When i got to the 10th floor in the tutorial and i saw Marina Agitando staring me down.... I did the loudest gasp a human could possibly do and my jaw was hung to the floor for a solid MINUTE!
Marina's first fucking dev diary made me cry and scream, THAT IS NOT A JOKE!!!! THESE CHARACTERS ARE THAT IMPORTANT TO ME!
And the final boss.... Made me cry, it broke me down, i was singing along to Ebb and Flow as best as i could, it felt like i was brought back to 2018, being in my room, listening to that song on repeat... I feel like a kid again....
I love this song... i love it so much... Like it's not the most hype finale song ever, but, the emotion behind it, the build up from Splatoon 2... The power this song has in it's meaning... It's some good shit man...
youtube
So yeah! I love Splatoon 3!!! It's my favourite game out of the series and anyone who is gonna jump into this game now is gonna have a LOT to chew on.
And... It's both sweet and sad that we're at the end. This is it... The moment we've been waiting for. The final Splatfest to end them all. The event 9 years in the making.
The Grand Festival...
I am extremely excited and so FUCKING NERVOUS for this Splatfest!!!! I know i am going to cry and be so overwhelmed with joy. Seeing the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook perform their old songs again after all of these years is gonna make me sob so loudly it's not even funny.
These characters genuinely mean the world to me and it's gonna be so fucking hard for me to watch their final major appearance and say goodbye. Cause after this, we don't know what's gonna happen. I know they will come back, they have to but... In what capacity? That's what I'm scared about...
So yeah, let's savior this moment when it eventually arrives, take all the time you need to be engulfed in the Grand Fest.
Thank you Splatoon 3, you have given me so much.... It's not time to say goodbye just yet but, i wanna watch you as you walk into the sunset with your head held high....

hello! I saw your pyrrhon localisation comparison post and I'm deeply intrigued by the characterisation and saw that you'd potentially be doing more. if you don't mind, could you do one on dark pit?
specifically on how he views freedom/flight, if possible. I've looked through some translations and I feel like though both concepts fall under the same umbrella, his character places more emphasis on 'independence' in english and 'flight' in japanese. maybe this gives slightly more edge to the questionable decision to make him join the forces of nature...though it is just my two cents. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
if requests like this are unwelcome then please feel free to delete this ask! sorry for the long ask and thank you for your insights!
No need to apologize! If anything, I should apologize for keeping you waiting for so long. I got terribly busy at such an unfortunate time...
A few others actually asked me to address Dark Pit in some capacity, but since you're requesting the full shebang, I figured I'd simply respond to you. I hope the others in my inbox can forgive me.
Anyway, yes, you are correct! The Japanese version places more emphasis on freedom while the English version seems to frame everything more around servitude. His English characterization is also a lot more smug and snarky compared to the Japanese. But since we're here, I might as well pick out all the notable line differences I can find. As has become the trend, there's more yapping below. Tumblr keeps moving around the cutoff so let's hope that when this gets posted, it isn't in some funky spot...
A few things before we start comparing voice files:
Dark Pit is actually called "Black Pit" in the Japanese version. Personally, I think this name is a lot better at representing the kind of character he is because "dark" kinda implies "evil" when that isn't necessarily the case. He plays the role of antagonist, sure, but he's not exactly a villain. It certainly doesn't help that he gets lumped in with the rest of the villains by outside sources (lookin' at you, Splatfest). "Black Pit" just does a better job at getting the whole "mirror image" idea across, since at the end of the day, that's the point of his character. Black's the opposite of white, after all. Of course, the name had to be changed out of necessity. It's got racial connotations in English. Anyone in their right mind would raise an eyebrow. Similar thing had to be done for Metal Face from Xenoblade Chronicles, who's called "Black Face" in Japan. Yeah, that definitely ain't gonna fly over here.
As a result, he's got a different nickname: ブラピ (Burapi, which I'll render as "Blapi" in translations). This is just an abbreviation of his full name, ブラックピット (Burakku Pitto), and it follows the typical Japanese abbreviation conventions. "Blapi" is certainly cute, as Palutena herself says, but "Pittoo" is kinda perfect.
Also, just like how Pit and Dark Pit are both voiced by the same voice actor in English (Antony Del Rio), the two share the same voice actress in Japanese (Minami Takayama). Like the English version, he has a slightly deeper voice. But in the Japanese I think there are a lot more apparent differences in how they talk.
For one, Dark Pit generally talks in a much more masculine fashion. I guess I should explain: Japanese is not gendered in the romance language sense (as in gendered adjectives and nouns as a grammatical function), but more like the way a person talks, like how they refer to themselves, their word choice, or how they end their sentences can evoke a certain vibe, if that makes sense. There are a bunch of different first and second-person pronouns in Japanese and all of them will give off a particular impression of who you are and have varying degrees of appropriateness depending on the social context. Dark Pit refers to himself as オレ (ore) which is very masculine and super casual. In the real world, it would only be used around close friends. He refers to everyone else as おまえ (omae) which is pretty much just as masculine and just as casual as オレ. Second-person pronouns are rarely used in real-world Japanese as is, but outside of super casual contexts, it can sound really derogatory since in essence it literally means something like "that which stands before me." To top it off, Dark Pit sometimes ends his sentences with really masculine particles like ぞ (zo) or ぜ (ze). Basically, he sounds gruff and tough and all that.
Pit's speech on the other hand is a lot less blatantly masculine. It's certainly masculine, but a lot less harsh and more on the boyish side. He refers to himself as ボク (boku) which is the typical little boy's pronoun you could say. It actually comes from an old Japanese word for "servant." Japanese society conditions boys to lean on 僕 (another way to write "boku") and girls to use 私 (watashi, which is gender-neutral and also the "default" pronoun). Unlike オレ, ボク can actually be applicable for more formal situations, but from what I understand, 私 will always be more preferable since 僕 does come across quite as boyish. Anyway, Pit does actually occasionally use おまえ and ends sentences with ぞ and ぜ but only when he's actively trying to be intimidating. I've also caught a couple instances of him using キミ (kimi), which is historically associated with 僕 anyway (kimi is to boku as anata is to watashi), and said instances have been for Dark Pit which is pretty interesting. キミ is supposed to have a pretty friendly and affectionate vibe from what I understand, but it apparently can also sound condescending and snobbish. Hmm. Otherwise he uses the other person's name in place of a second-person pronoun or ends sentences with the neutral よ (yo) and ね (ne). Palutena also uses those two.
Alright, enough about that. I think the emphasis on freedom as opposed to servitude specifically is apparent the moment he's introduced. The cutscene before the boss fight continues pretty much plays out the same way between versions so I'll skip right to the second phase. As always, English first:
Boss this... serving that... Palutena's lines also double down on the more servitude-centric approach the English version takes. You'll hear she doesn't make this kind of comment in the Japanese version:
Okay! This one's easy:
Pandora: Hey! Your opponent is that angel over there!
Dark Pit: That has nothing to do with me. I'll only do what I like!
Pit: It's kind of like watching myself... it's disturbing...
Palutena: But it looks like he's quick to fight, huh? Well, while you're at it, how about you try to defeat Pandora together?
Now that I'm comparing the two, the English version really seems to be trying to hit you over the head with the servitude theme, huh? But you see what I mean, there's a clear difference in framing here. The whole "I'll only do what I like" is a reoccurring theme for his character throughout the game, I'd say.
If you spend a little bit more time with the boss, Pandora will make a comment about how the "Mirror of Truth reflects the truth," but they go about the same way between both versions.
Oh, and you can also see some differences in their characterization once you take Pandora down:
"Hmph. Finally kicked the bucket, huh?"
Like I said... a whole lot more smug in the English version.
Since we're here, I like how the cutscene afterwards plays out:
"You look too much like me and it's disturbing!"
"That's my line..."
English Pit is way too nonchalant about the situation, lol. I think we gotta acknowledge how genuinely unnerving it would be to have another you walkin' around.
Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked. The rest of the cutscene pretty much plays out the same... the only other thing is that English Palutena expresses a worry that Dark Pit could be allied with Medusa whereas Japanese Palutena just says he ought to be pursued immediately.
Moving onto chapter 6, the level in which we subdue Dark Pit. Yippee.
We're thrown right into an aerial duel and the conversation pretty much goes the same way between versions (obviously there's a lot more snark from Dark Pit in English)... except for this line when his identity as a clone is brought up:
"How can you say I'm a copy? Right now, I'm living!"
"How about that? I'm living!!"
Mm yes, impeccable logic right there.
I think this idea might be related to a later discussion brought up by Palutena about the nature of his existence. In English she says "his very existence is unnatural" and in Japanese she says something like "he should have never existed in the first place."
So, by that logic, since clones are unnatural and shouldn't exist, the fact that he's alive and existing like nothing's wrong means that he isn't unnatural and thus not a clone. He just doesn't want to face the truth... that doesn't happen till the boss fight anyway.
But before that, Medusa tries to appeal to him, only for him to brush her off:
In English he just reinstates that nobody can boss him around.
Here he's saying something along the lines of "those who brandish another's sword have no wings to alight." "Alight" as in to descend or swoop down. Never knew it could be a verb. There's definitely a servitude sort of context in both lines, but the Japanese version incorporates a little bit more of that freedom aspect with the whole alighting wings thing.
Okay, now we can talk about the boss fight!
Methinks the puppet doth protest too much... teehee.
Strong emphasis on servitude as we already talked about. Now the Japanese:
Translation time:
Dark Pit: Come at me! You piece of goddess shit!
Pit: What did you say?!
Dark Pit: You're always the goddess's yes-man and fighting for her without holding any doubts. Aren't you dissatisfied with that kind of life? Hm?
Pit: Not in the least! I'm sure of it!
Dark Pit: They say that the "Magic Mirror of Truth" shows the truth. In that case, my existence itself embodies your true feelings, does it not?
Pit: You don't understand. You would never understand! I respect Lady Palutena's affection and want to be of some help to her! That showing of the truth, it's a lie! It's nothing more than a suggestion that comes from its name! I won't be tricked that easily!
Dark Pit: They say people get worked up when you hit the mark.
Pit: Still with that logic!
Dark Pit: Whatever. Do as you like. As for me, there's no way I'll serve someone. With these wings, I'll live freely!
Pit: I envy you, but then I don't!
A couple translation notes:
The Mirror of Truth just has a slightly different name in Japanese. It's called the 真実の魔鏡 (shinjitsu no makyou) and although 魔鏡 isn't a real word, it's just combining the characters for "witchcraft" and "mirror" so it's easy to just render it as "magic mirror."
Dark Pit calls Pit 女神のフンめ (megami no fun me), and as we discussed in a previous post, tacking め (me) onto something makes it derogatory. And フン (fun) is another way of reading the kanji for 糞 (kuso) which means like "feces" or "excrement." So combined with め... you get the idea. I can't elude swears here either...
When Pit is talking about "Palutena's affection," he uses the word 慈愛 (jiai) which I honestly had no idea how to translate without it sounding really weird. My JP to ENG dictionary just equated it to "affection" or "fondness" but I wasn't satisfied, so I looked into a Japanese dictionary, and it defined it as "the kind of affection a parent has for their child." ..."affection" it is then.
This exchange is probably the only time Japanese Dark Pit blatantly brings up servitude. Even then, there's still a lot more emphasis on "doing what you like" compared to the English, which is very hyper-focused on servitude. What I'm trying to say is, the Japanese version is like "you're doing what someone else wants rather than what you want" and the English version is more like "you're someone else's servant when you don't have to be." Not the most eloquent way of putting it, but that's the vibe.
The English conversation in general I think leaves out a lot of information for the sake of sticking to the whole servitude thing. Pit says he "follows Palutena because she always guides him the right way" when obviously their relationship is a lot more than one of mere mutual benefit. The Japanese version kinda fills in these gaps by elaborating that Pit's devotion comes from his respect for Palutena's fondness for humans and life. So that allows Dark Pit to question why he would want to adhere to someone else's wishes rather than his own.
There's also that last line in the Japanese version: it is indeed true that to some extent, Pit envies his clone. Palutena surmised that Dark Pit is a manifestation of Pit's "dark side" (she says pretty much the same thing in the Japanese version, if you're wondering) and I don't think that's entirely untrue. Japanese Dark Pit even states that he's the embodiment of Pit's "true feelings." Pit harbors some deep-seated desire to be on his own, and I think this is reemphasized in chapter 10, where he says his wish would be to "fly by himself" (or "to be able to freely fly through the sky" as he says in Japanese). He gets all worked up for a reason. And we must remember, Dark Pit is Pit's mirror image. So as his opposite, he embodies those hidden feelings, and of course Dark Pit holds some suppressed desires of his own... I'll get back to that.
Before I move onto his appearance in chapter 9, I just want to point out that in the Japanese version, Palutena actually acknowledges Pit's defense of her and thanks him, it's really sweet. In English she pretty much just says that they gotta move on, lol.
The next time we meet Dark Pit is in chapter 9. He must have snuck behind us while we were entering that gate to the Underworld... he suddenly shows up to take out a horde of enemies. When asked why he's there, he responds with his typical snark in the English version:
Are you now...
And in response to Palutena asking if he was interested in helping Pit out:
Standard response. And now the Japanese equivalents:
"I told you, didn't I? I live freely."
"I just so happened to want to beat the crap out of these guys."
He's using 無性に (mushouni) here which is like "excessively" or "like crazy" so I did a bit of creative interpreting...
And then in the Japanese version, Palutena asks if he was called by Pit's "fighting spirit":
"That has absolutely nothing to do with me! Nothing! Don't say disturbing things!"
Seems like we really hit the mark, eh? I'd share the voice files because the delivery here is fun, but I'm limited to only so many... and I wanted to include the English files just because his characterization is so different.
Then he dips but he comes right on back to take out the miniboss right before the ground portion of the level. Did you know the scene plays out totally differently between versions? Here's the English:
All smug and tough. Heh. Now in the Japanese... not so much:
You can hear it at least, right? I'll translate:
Dark Pit: Ugh...! I-I overdid it...
Palutena: It doesn't look like any bones were broken!
Dark Pit: Don't dawdle! Go quickly, before more troops arrive!
Palutena: It's just as Blapi says. Let's take him at his word.
Pit: Thanks a lot, Blapi!
Dark Pit: Seriously, what's with this "Blapi?"
Palutena: We're breaking in!
Not so tough anymore, huh? Something like this REALLY shows the differences in characterization, doesn't it? This kind of scene really emphasizes Dark Pit's tough, lone wolf type character... or it alludes to the possibility that he can't reach his full potential living freely...
The next time we encounter Dark Pit was always weird to me, he kinda just shows up as a miniboss in chapter 13... Arlon summons him there somehow. How did they get into contact? Who knows.
Anyway there's honestly not much of interest in that scene. The whole conversation plays out pretty much the same. It's just another case of a smug line in English versus something not smug.
So let's look at a more interesting line instead! Dark Pit suddenly shows up again with the Lightning Chariot to bust open the entrance to the Chaos Vortex. And when asked about this course of action...
But in Japanese it's interesting:
"This is not the time to talk about it! Lady Palutena's in a pinch, right?"
So, here he actually addresses Palutena as さま (sama) which is a really respectful honorific. It's like "exalted" or "esteemed." Basically, he actually calls her "lady," which he NEVER does in the English version.
Those are his suppressed feelings. He secretly has some respect for her. Why else would he suddenly show up to help Pit out?
"But Hervy!" You might say. "He was unconscious while Pit was a ring after the war against the Aurum! He's helping Pit for the sake of self-preservation!"
Oh true... he does say this. Here he is in the following level:
I mean, Pit quite literally says it. That's why he has to help him save Palutena!! Now then... what if I told you that this was entirely exclusive to the English version? The conversation goes VERY differently in Japanese:
Lemme write it out clearly for ya!
Dark Pit: Still at it, huh?
Pit: Blapi!
Dark Pit: Seriously, don't call me "Blapi!" I'm gonna kick these guys around. Stay quiet and watch.
Pit: Your meddling is unnecessary! I got this!
Both: Rahhh!!
It's rather plain, huh? But no, your ears did not deceive you... er, your eyes did not deceive you. I'm reading too, don't worry. How else can I look up words? Lol. The whole self-preservation thing is something entirely reserved for the English version. In the Japanese version, I suppose he's just doing as he likes? And that's beating up baddies, I guess. That tracks.
He has a few other speaking lines as the level goes on, but it's once again a matter of in English he says something smug and in Japanese he says something rather mundane by comparison. Similar situation for his lines in the little skirmishes in chapter 6 too, by the way. In the boss fight itself, there's this one line in English that always stood out to me:
Like, why would he say this? Lol. Girlypop, you're literally using the dead remains of a goddess in order to fly around. Who are you to say where the line is drawn? I dunno, it just seems... random for him to say. He was never one to harp on about morals up until now.
The Japanese line is less odd to me:
He says something along the lines of "I don't think any other soul would last this long being consumed," obviously referring to Palutena's.
There isn't much to note for the rest of the fight... in the segment afterwards, when Dark Pit is attacked by the remains of the Chaos Kin, he cries out "help me" in English but calls out Pit's name in the Japanese version. Just figured I'd mention it since I personally found it interesting.
Alright! Final stretch! Despite the fact that chapter 22 has you playing as Dark Pit the whole way through... there honestly isn't much to note, but I'll list a few minor things:
Unrelated to Dark Pit himself, but the English version consistently implies that Pit is dying or on the verge of death, and it's reemphasized by Viridi's lines where she talks about "cheating death." The Japanese version just says he's in a "comatose state" and never really seems to imply he'll die or anything. In fact, Palutena expresses a worry that her plan to restore him might end up "eradicating" him (the Japanese game tries to avoid using "kill" as much as possible, probably due to ratings reasons). Following the English script, you would think Dark Pit would be a little bit more eager to help out if Pit was indeed nearly dead, lol.
Palutena also doesn't bring up the fact that she too owes Pit in the Japanese dialogue. Hmm. Either way, she persuades Dark Pit to assist by reminding him of his debt to Pit.
Of course, Dark Pit is, you guessed it, just more snarky in the English version. Heck, both Palutena and Viridi comment on his attitude in later points of the level, which doesn't happen in the Japanese version. Back on topic, there are these lines:
Back to talkin' servitude! The Japanese version naturally reflects more of the freedom lens:
"For your information, I don't need the miracle of flight."
"The sky is mine!"
Pretty much in line with everything we've discussed prior. Different emphases and all that. Oh, and "miracle of flight" is just the Japanese equivalent for the power of flight. Any instance of "miracle" is either omitted or replaced with "power" in the English version
There's also the part where Hades' grand scheme is unraveled, right after the miniboss. Just like in the Chaos Kin boss fight, English Dark Pit decides to be moral about the whole mass molding of souls into Underworld soldiers thing:
In English, as you can see, Viridi's wigging out over Hades' irresponsible use of souls. In Japanese Viridi instead makes a comment on how Hades' strategy isn't terribly efficient, as they just discussed how it takes a whole lotta souls to make an entire monster. Since that's how the conversation progresses, Dark Pit instead remarks that the ability to fight back is possible:
Something along the lines of "in other words, we can brute force it!"
I just want to know what the idea is behind the occasional moral grandstanding is in the English version. I honestly never really noticed it until now. Maybe it's just to express the fact that he's a neutral party...?
The last scene we'll take a look at for today is this one exchange during the first phase of the boss, since really there's nothing else left of note and I've been dragging this out for quite a while. It's the last example of the contrast between emphases I can find. Here's the English:
And then the Japanese:
It goes something like this:
Palutena: Blapi's ability to fly freely was thanks to Pandora's leftover magic powers.
Viridi: Essentially, you could say Padora's remains were residing in his wings. And by the power of the Rewind Spring, she was able to revive herself.
Pandora: The nerve of doing whatever you wanted!
Dark Pit: Well, it was rather convenient. I'll defeat you again and use you in the same way. Be grateful.
Pandora: You little shit!
The return of フン... anyway, Pandora uses the phrase 好き勝手 or "doing as one likes/wants/pleases," which is the kind of vibe the Japanese version has always been going for. That's the reoccurring theme.
There ya have it. To be honest, the best way to really highlight the differences in characterization is to look at the pre-boss battle rallying cry.
"Servant to no other but myself" versus "wings of freedom." Can't get more succinct than that.
You brought up his joining of the Forces of Nature... this is something that is revealed in Dark Pit's Palutena's Guidance conversation in the Palutena's Temple stage in Smash Bros for Wii U and Ultimate. I didn't know this until recently but apparently it's pretty divisive among fans. It's definitely a little odd but personally I don't think it's too farfetched?
Think about it: Dark Pit answered to Arlon's request at one point. He uses the Lightning Chariot, which is always retrieved by Phosphora, who follows Viridi. And at the end of chapter 22, the one that collects him is Viridi. He keeps getting wrapped in their business one way or another.
He can't "live freely" or "do as he likes" without Pandora anymore either. So realistically, what else can he do if he wants to continue on fighting and trouncing baddies? Viridi can supply his flight and thus enable his scrappy lifestyle.
The conversation in Smash pretty much goes the same way in both languages. Viridi reveals that Dark Pit became an officer of her forces and that she isn't beyond opposing Palutena again. Dark Pit meanwhile says that their alliance came as a result of mutual shared interests. What these interests are, we never learn.
I wonder if people's gripes with this information come from that strong emphasis on servitude in the English version--he'd never be anyone's subordinate! But if we consider it from the Japanese side of things, he doesn't really have that kind of dignity to lose. He's already lost the one thing he defined himself by--his wings of freedom. So based on this, and events from Uprising itself, I think it's reasonable enough that he would hang around Viridi. I'd imagine he's more of a free spirit like Phosphora, anyway.
Besides. This is all only in Smash. Are there really enough grounds to say it's canon? I don't think so. Personally I wouldn't think too deeply about this unless it happens in an actual Kid Icarus game. And we all know a sequel will never happen. Not outside our dreams, anyway. Until then, if you still have your gripes, I'd say feel free to disregard it!
Well, thanks for your patience and thanks for reading if you made it this far! I know I took a bit of a hiatus but I don't plan on quitting these kinds of posts. There are still more things that can be talked about, I think. Feel free to send me requests if there's something specific you want me to take a look at! :)
But please keep in mind that I'm also juggling my part-time job and my final semester of university... bear with me if it takes just as long for me to respond!

Okie-dokie! SOOOOOOO!! It's That Time for me to Yap more about My Favorite Blorbo, One OF My Favorite comfort characters: Pearl Splatoon 2 HEHEEHEHEHEEH XDDDDDDDD And ALSO!!! A bit of lore as well for Hooked on to You story! Now Then...
Pearl in Hooked on to You and the way I see Pearl? Gender Comforting Character. Pearl in my view is He/Shey/They, Nonbinary Lesbian! Nonbinary Butch or He/Him butch! Whichever!

The reason I'm saying this? Is that Pearl is a Comfort kin character of Mine. Ever since Splatoon 2's Testfire Splatfest: Cake vs Ice Cream, I was a fan. I LOOOOOOOOOVE Cake!! One of my favorites and Pearl's favorites being Strawberry Cake which is also my favorite! So already on to a GREAT AWESOME Look and why I choose the team.
Then it was on Splatoon 2's official release date that I played it, and went on Hero Mode 2's Sunken Scrolls. The tale of how Pearl join in the Singing Competition in Calamary Country and unfortunately was disqualified due to HOW ABSURD and LOUD Their voice was? I felt seen.

See, I am a HUGE YAPPER and can be quite loud and whatnot and there has been plenty of times that I've been told to stop it. That I shouldn't be that loud or that I am getting annoying with the way I talk or ramble or yap about, and the thing is? I just like to yap and yap around XD Especially when its like one of my favorite things ever, this case of course, Splatoon!
So already with the first Sunken Scrolls that talks about Pearl and Marina's little bits of Backstory? I was HOOKED on with Them already.
And then more Splatfests came to be....
I was Team Mayo (I like Mayo), Team Flight, Team Vampires and so on and forwards. It wasn't til Team Fantasy where I first time join a Marina's team. Either way, I go by what I feel and such based on the question and theme, and genuinely every time that Pearl would talk in why He would pick that choice? I would follow cause it was so much familiar! So in a sense, She was the most relatable ;W;
And then finally, Octo Expansion came to be! And Her backstory, the Punk story and how much He was trying and trying so much to deal in with what SHE WANTED to write and sing? Oh my gosh, SO MUCH Same here! Many times wanting to be myself and be unapologetic about it and decided to go with it! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!

Truly amazing. And obviously that didn't stop in Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion, It came to be Final Fest: Chaos vs Order and I was Team Chaos. Because I truly believe that when it comes to Life, You really can't get ALL the order and that while Change is indeed scary, its something that inevitably comes and such. Its hard and easier than done for sure, but its why I Love being in the Present. I still have quite the power to also take in and see what I CAN DO! When it comes to like per say, what I MUST do in the Present and actual time (yes, I was also Team Present for Grand Fest XD)
Is also why I decided to go and expand on more to Pearl's backstory in based of True Experiences I lived when growing up. Certain experiences being quite that I look and are bitter about, but it is what it is Y'know? I can't change the past and surely there are bitter moments, but thats is why on to the Present is best to SO MUCH take ahold of those experiences and do what You can do!
As I see myself I wanted to represent as well those kinds of feelings. I'm one that is quite comfortable within my gender in how I like to feel and I want that to be seen in that case. Which is also why I gave in within per say also somewhat giving Pearl my body type too! Except that Pearl is shorter XDDDDDDDDDDD But hey! He's a SHORT QUEEN! YEAAAAAAAAH! THE MC PRINCESS!

But yeah! Reason I like to ramble about Me being seen with Pearl And having The lucky chance to do so via writing or drawing, Even gameplay Why Not XD Is something dear And Comfy! And I believe it's quite amazing to see anyone as well be on The Same feeling or Just being seen! Cause any of You That relate? HELL YEAH!

#splatoon#splatoon 2#pearl houzuki#hooked on to you au#off the hook#skies rambles#skies is yapping about her favorite blorbo and tied comfy character#seriously i like so much to ramble about Pearl#there will be more yapping too about all of my comfy and favs characters coming soon XD

Hai hai!(*ゝω・*)
Okay okay, so it was my first time playing splatoon 3 after my friends hypnotized me into the fandom and getting the game! I've been playing it all the time, I love it so so much! All the characters are so so cool! I love deep cut and the squid sisters both so much, they all have cook stuff about em!
Anywho I was wondering if you could do. Shiver x fem! Hyperfem, high energy reader that's very sweet and affectionate, alway around her when she can, a little bit ditzy at times but its slightly charimg to shiver?
♡ don't rush and remember to take care of yourself, drink water, spend time in the sun, etc!!゚+.(*´pωq`)゚+.
Aaaaa hello hello! Thank you for requesting!
I'm glad you've found a game you liked! Trust me, splatoon is one of the most goated franchises i know ✨️
also, of course I can do that! I'm gonna do another headcanons + scenario type thing, if that's alright ^^
now onto the thingy

♨ You are NEVER seen without Shiver
♨ like, you love her to death
♨ you're always on her right side, interlocking your arms and rambling to her about whatever
♨ you're also always acting like you're hopped up of 50 lbs of sugar, so Shiver (despite being a gremlin herself) finds it a bit hard to keep up with you
♨ But that doesn't mean she doesn't try!!!
♨ Also, since you enjoy dressing really feminine, Shiver is your personal fashion DIVA
♨ is always ordering Jel La Fleur around, telling him what to make for you
♨ don't worry, she's definitely got the money for it
♨ But yeah she spoils you. If you want it you get it
♨ some super cute and pink boots? bought. a cute oversized hoodie? bought. some heart shades? bought.
♨ you're kinda ditzy sometimes, so Shiver has to slow down when she's talking to you
♨ But your cluelessness makes you all the more unintentionally charming so it's a win
♨ you guys go on all SORTS of dates
♨ like feeding the ducks or a shopping day
♨ Shiver admires how sweet you are
♨ she couldn't stop gushing to frye about how nice you were to everyone in the Money vs. Fame vs. Love splatfest halftime
♨ she wouldn't ever admit that to YOU, though
♨ it honestly made frye wonder why she wasn't on Team Love with you
♨ with how overly energetic you are, Shiver has considered putting you on one of those backpack leashes multiple times
♨ you're very fidgety and such
♨ and, remember when I said that "your cluelessness is also quite charming"?
♨ trust me when I say you definitely live up to that
♨ lemme set the scene..
﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌
Tonight, you and Shiver were checking the mail, seeing which events you were invited to and which ones you actually wanted to go to (as famous celebrities do).
"Anything interesting on your end?" Shiver asked, leaning on your shoulder and looking over it. You held up an invitation to a convention that its creators would like you to attend. It was in super fancy, almost unintelligible writing, but you were able to get a gist of it all. "It says (F/N) ploose-oh-ney."
".. Eh? What did you say there?"
You shifted to face her properly, trying to make sense of the words signed on the bottom. "Ploose-oh-ney. That's what it looks like it says." Shiver asks to see the invite, and you hand it to her. She looks puzzled as she attempts to decrypt the fancy writing.
After a moment, she lets out an audible 'oh!' and hands the invitation back to you. "It says 'plus one'." You take the fancy letter back and put it close to your face. "Really?" It took you a while to see it.
"The fancy writing didn't help with that, to be honest." Shiver admitted. You looked up at her and set the invitation down in your lap. "Well, if we do ever go to that special event.."
You grinned from ear to ear and leaned on her. "I would love for you to be my ploose-oh-ney."
Shiver couldn't help but turn a bright inky red at the comment. Believe it or not, she gets flustered really easily. She hides behind her fan and begins to aggressively fan herself. "A-ah! Thank you, (N/N). Now, I, uh.. I think it'd be best if we kept searching just in case we find anything better!"
You shrugged and set the note aside, creating a 'good pile' and completely oblivious to what you had done to your poor lover.

So…Splatoon 3’s come to an end (of regular updates). And it feels weird.
Honestly, it’d feel almost disingenuous to go on a spiel about how much this game means to me when I don’t have the same amount of history and nostalgia with this franchise that countless other players do (I mean, I am literally a Christmas noob, Spicy vs Sweet vs Sour was my first ever Splatfest). My pain with parting with this game absolutely cannot compare to how longtime fans of the franchise must feel parting with this trilogy that they’ve been with for almost a decade, and I don’t want to pretend I’m somehow on that level.
But it still hurts. This game helped me a lot over the past almost-two years with combating stress from working on my personal projects, irl stuff that is far outside of my control, and the like. The main reason I picked Team Future in the first place was the current atmosphere going on in the US, with political tensions at an all-time high and my own future - and millions of others’ - in jeopardy, so I wanted the importance I place in the future to be known. And also the game is just addictively fun, and Deep Cut quickly skyrocketed to some of my favorite characters in gaming. Honestly be grateful I spared you from seeing all my screenshots I took during the fest, it had to be well over a hundred and at least 75% of those had to be Deep Cut related.
So, yeah, thanks, Splatoon 3. Catch ya later. Not like you’re going anywhere, really.

[Just me rambling about the drawinf underneath]
♡ FINALLY SPLATOWEEN IS HERE, AND THIS POST TOOK ME SO DANG LONG! But yes! I have risen from the dust once again and come here to deliver you art! Extreme burn out got me down, but gosh, did splatoween revive my soul XD much like how my first splatfest made me want to draw again....yeah, this game is special, hehe
♡ Anyway, I am super duper proud of this! My favourite part being her face! I just love how it turned out! I'm almost shocked it was ME who drew it and not some popular artist I admire XD, so I hope you guys like it just as I did!
I spent exactly 19 hours on this
Though I love how this turned out, THIS DOESN'T LOOK LIKE A 19 HOUR DRAWING! I swear most of that time spent was figuring out a pose, then also fixing up mistakes after coloring and shading cuz I got a part of the outfit INCREDIBLY wrong cuz there weren't enough pictures at the time I started drawing her gjdjsjak

(fanfic below cut)
Four leapt onto the station platform, a large bag draped over their shoulder and a wide smile on their face.
“Holy shit, you guys weren’t kidding, Splatsville is huge!” They exclaimed as they took in the towering buildings, a vast array of different shops, restaurants, and entertainment. The skyscrapers were so tall, Four thought they might fall over from staring at them.
“Told ya,” Nell teased, dragging a bag of her own. “Although, I don’t think I’d want to live here. I think I still prefer Inkopolis.”
“You got a soft spot for Inkopolis now, Nell?” Phal teased. Spore seemed to make a laughing sound, though it could have also been a burp.
“Shut up,” she grumbled in response. “I just appreciate that Itys has shown us enough hospitality to let us stay at their apartment for the time being.”
“Everyone, Neo’s been waiting for us for the past several minutes,” Atra pointed out, gesturing to the inkling and faer smallfry standing a few yards away from the station.
“Are you coming or what? The others are already my place!” Fae called. Faer Octarian was getting better, though fae still struggled with some pronunciations, and often forgot small words.
“‘The others are already at my place’,” Atra corrected.
“We’re coming!” Four called to Neo, rushing into the city. The four Octarians followed close behind.
Splatsville was being decorated for the upcoming Splatfest, with machinery and boxes of decorations everywhere. Four and the others were planning on staying at Neo’s condo for the weekend so that they could get to see what a Splatfest in Splatsville was like. Four had taken the Octarians to Splatfests in Inkopolis Plaza before, but they’d never gotten to see a Splatfest in Splatsville. This one was special too; Shiver, Frye, and Big Man were competing to see who would be the better leader of Deep Cut.
It had been about a year since Neo defeated Mr. Grizz, and the war between inklings and octarians finally came to an end. Now the vast majority of octolings were living freely on the surface, which Octavio was more than happy to see. With no war to fight anymore, he dedicated his time to working with Marina on a way to cure the octarians who had been sanitized in the Deepsea Metro, and hoped to eventually use the same method to cure those who had been fuzzed as well. The two had even asked Four and Eight to help out. Four was set to act as a security guard and help with some beta testing, while Eight would be the first official user.
“So, what teams are you all joining for the splatfest?” Neo pried as fae let the group to faer condo.
“I’m team Big Man, obviously.” Nell shrugged a little.
“Team Frye all the way!” Phal cheered, Spore gargling in agreement.
“I’m going to have to go team Shiver,” Atra said.
“I still can’t decide. I think they’d all be great leaders,” Four whined.
“Come on, Four, you gotta pick a team!” Neo punched them lightly in the shoulder, faer tone teasing.
Four elbowed faer back playfully. “I know, but it’s so hard! What are the others going with?”
Neo sighed, trying to remember. “Captain’s going team Shiver, Eight’s team Frye, both Callie and Marie are team Big Man— I think that’s ‘cuz of the Liquid Sunshine thing. I’m team Shiver.”
“Yeah, that doesn’t narrow down my choices at all,” Four sighed.
“Well maybe everyone else will be able to help you decide because we’re here!” Neo announced, stopping in front of a large condominium complex. “Come on in!”
Fae held the door open as the Four, Phal, Spore, Atra, and Nell walked through.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guess what? There's another oneshot with this chapter! Time to see what Four and Marie have been doing just a few weeks after this!

Oh hey, it's this game's 2nd anniversary.
So...similarly to Pokèmon Mystery Dungeon, Ace Attorney & Persona, I went into this game without playing ANY of it previously.
However, unlike those series, I didn't go in completely blind. I KNEW what to expect as I'd seen promotional material and LPs for the entire Splatoon trilogy on YouTube before. I knew it was a shooter game, I knew (most of) the lore, and I knew how the game worked.
And what I got...well, needless to say, it absolutely ROCKED my world.
Ironically, even though Splatoon was in the back of my mind, I hadn't thought about it until I saw the promo material for Side Order.

LOOK AT THAT ARTWORK. You bet your ass that suddenly shot Splatoon 3 onto the top of my wishlist.
Of course, I wasn't buying it purely for Side Order. I was also buying it because I hadn't played Splatoon during the Splatfests, and I missed out on Splatoon 2 as well. I was NOT missing out for the 3rd time in a row.
Needless to say, I was absolutely fucking AMAZED by it. I had never played such a fast-paced shooter before, and it made my autistic, ADHD-addled brain get the dopamine hit it absolutely deserves. (Oh yeah, don't think I've mentioned that before, have I? Long story short: I was diagnosed with BOTH ADHD and Autism when I was really young. We're talking, like, two years old, here. Let's not dwell on that, though.)
And as soon as I could, I played RoTM and Side Order.
I got stuck at Frye's boss fight in RoTM, but I eventually beat it. But then I got to Mr. Grizz's fight...
youtube
...and this cutscene was then promptly burnt into my memory. I almost BROKE MY SWITCH IN HALF because I kept failing and this cutscene kept playing as a giant middle finger on my screen.
I had to give up for the sake of my Switch, and for the sake of my sanity. I am NEVER completing Return of the Mammalians because it was just THAT bad of an experience for me.
However, Side Order was a different story. I thought it was unbeatable. I always failed at Floor 20 and thought I would never get any higher than that. However, I eventually did. And then, directly after that, the game gave me the Blaster Palette (palette = different equippable weapon, btw), and I proceeded to beat Side Order with it.
I actually cried tears of pure fucking joy when I realized I had toppled that 30-floor tower of hell. It took 42 runs over the course of 150 days (I counted), but I did it. And my god, was it perfect timing. The final non-special Splatfest, Bread vs. Rice vs. Pasta was just about to begin, and I had my very first Splatfest in Inkopolis Square.
It. Was. Worth. It.
And of course, I grew attached to Deep Cut. Specifically Big Man, which, as you all have no doubt seen, I finally have his amiibo. And by god, I'm gonna make sure I take good care of it.
All in all, this game basically made me a fan the moment I booted up a match for the first time.
Thank you for everything, Splatoon 3.
Believe me, the future looks bright for the Splatoon series. Whatever direction it takes, I'm ready for it.
Happy 2nd anniversary, Splatoon 3. Here's to celebrating it in style at the Grand Festival soon. Cheers. 🥂

Another Sploon refresh with Takako! She's a former Octarian who managed to find her way above ground shortly after the events of the first game, and ever since then she's been living it up! Yeah, she has a tendency to be blunt in her mannerisms, and yeah she's got a bit of a nasty temper at times, but she still cares about everyone close to her.
Splashtag was made via https://splashtagmaker.com/, which not only has all the official Splashtag assets but also fan-made banners based on in-universe bands, Turf War stages, all of Splat3's Splatfest themes, pride flags, and more!
💖🐶 Check out my pinned post for ways to support my artwork, among other things! 🐶💖
~Feedback helps to motivate my work, so let me know what you think! The best way to do that is via reblogs (both through tags and comments added onto the posts), but replies are great too! If you don’t have anything specific to say but still enjoy the art, a like is very much appreciated!~

What do you think of Frye? And do you have any theories or anything? I know she’s new-ish, but I personally really like her and I just wanted to hear your opinion >_>
When she was first revealed and for a long time, i didn't think much of Frye. I was always a Shiver fan because my straight male brain saw a conventionally attractive fictional woman lmao.
However more recently, and after seeing so much fan art and fans talking about her and loving her.... Frye is now is my favorite Deep Cut member. She's such a god damn cute little gremlin, her dance moves are so adorable too. Like sometimes she just sits down on stage and it's so funny and cute.
I think there is something in our brains where we wanna root for an underdog and for the longest time Frye was the underdog, she only had one Splatfest win and it was so long ago... The cheering on social media and all the art celebrating her latest win was so damn incredible. It was so magical. Also i swear to god, every Frye fan that i know of has been a great person. If you like Frye then it's an automatic green flag in my book. If you like Shiver the most then it's a yellow flag... And if you like Big Man the most then IT'S A RED FLAG!!!!! I'm joking. It's a green flag!
So yeah Frye is my favorite Deep Cut member and I'm gonna be cheering for her right until the end! I don't have any theories on her and i just wish the best for her.
HOPE SHE DOESN'T BECOME EVIL OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT! NINTENDO..... I'M WATCHING YOU.......

OOC:
Hello peoples of tumblr! Blog will be active again from today, we're officially continuing this story! (cheers to the air excitedly. if you're still here? HELLO! Also telepathic cat anon, if you are still around... the Meowster misses you!!)
I might post a little summary if I have the time, for those who don't remember or wanna follow it but don't wanna read from the beginning (I tried. It took me more than a week.) No promises though, but I'll try!
Activity will be slow these first days, in my case mostly bcs there's a splatfest going on the next three days, and it'll take me a bit to adjust to rping seriously again, get in character etc... But yeah, feel free to send some asks!
There will be a time-skip, so the kitty Master is now healed. He was previously, well, quite incapacitated in the medbay. He's still in there bcs there's a lock on the door 👁️👁️ The Doctor has been helping take care of him, and fixing what he did to the TARDIS, so she's mostly operative now as usual, except for the fact that she can't move in time.
#ooc post#update#tytnw#dw rp#<- wont be using this tag other than for this otherwise we'll clog it I'm aware. the tag for this story is tytnw!

So, for Splatoon's 10th anniversary I wanted to some artwork but I got no ideas AND even if I did I'd still procrastinate. Best I can do is give a rough history about how I first got into it! (It's been a pretty long time ago so I'm using the sheer power of my memory to do this.)
All the way back in 2019(?) I was just scrolling through YouTube and stuff, until I found a video about Off The Hook. How they looked just immediately interested me. Like, designwise not the inkling and octoling bits. I never knew about Splatoon at the time. So I clicked on the video and I was a little bit more interested in them and what they were about (i guess I have OTH to thank about my Splatoon addiction XD) Overtime, I learned about the game they're from (😉) and was watching gameplay and lore videos on it. Fast forward to 2020 (before covid), I already had a switch at the time (I only had smash ultimate and Super Mario Party at the time I assume) and with my newly found interest in Splatoon, I decided to get Splatoon 2 for my birthday. I never had Nintendo Switch Online at the time, so I just played the single player campaign. (Which i still enjoy) Yeah, I remember beating it in the span of a week or so.
I never really payed attention to the fact that Splatoon 2 was mainly an online game, but what motivated me to get the membership was the Mayo vs Ketchup splatfest rerun, and it was the first real experience I had playing the game, I still even have pictures saved from that fest on my switch! Speaking of the membership, I also played Octo Expansion and loved it too! (Most of the 8 Ball levels and Matchmaker Station can burn in hell tho) from then on, Splatoon 2 was pretty much the only game I ever played on my Switch.
1 year later (2021, the day before my birthday), the Splatoon 3 announcement trailer dropped, and I remember being SUPER hype for that, and I also remember yelling in my mind "IT'S OUT ON FUCKING 2022!?" But, hey! The wait was worth it. I also remember being a HARDCORE Frye defender upon Deep Cut's first appearance (I never saw the reason behind the hate she and Pearl got, but now that I do, the people that STILL hate them are FUCKING. PATHETIC.) Anyway, I also remember thinking that Shiver was ugly as hell, and i also didn't understand why she was the popular one. (Made Hey Arnold and Stewie Griffin jokes about her head shape too. I still think it looks like a football-) Luckily, I've grown out of those phases about 2 years ago, and learned to love them equally. And Big Man too, I guess.
Overall, the Splatoon franchise played a big part in making me who I am today. I even made a badass OC and a great at best fanfic from it! (Which is still in progress I PROMISE I'm still working on it) With all of this out of the way, thank you Splatoon, for the impact you left on me, and thousands, if not probably millions of people in the world of gaming. Here's to more years of colorful gameplay, salty players, unbalanced splatfest, and limited third kits! (The last three were jokes but y'all get the point)
(Forgot to mention I have a Wii U, therefore I'm a proud owner of the first game ever since Christmas 2024. Pretendo nation RISE UP)
