Bruce had to take a moment before responding to Skaar’s questions. He spotted his son’s teasing. On the one hand, he was proud. On the other, he didn’t appreciate the tone. Oh, the joys of fatherhood.

“No,” he said flatly but there’s a barely suppressed smirk on his face. “I was climbing the dizzying heights of scientific discoveries instead. Which, to some, might not sound so exciting but it gave me the same kind of thrill.” Inside, he was preparing himself for Skaar to scoff and roll his eyes.

He’s quiet for a moment, listening intently, a sudden tightness growing in his chest. But eventually he breathes a low, sad sigh, and moves to sit next to his son.

“I think everyone wonders that sometimes, Skaar. Why bad or sad things happen, what it would be like if they never happened at all. Sometimes I wonder what I’d be like if my own father was kind, or if my accident never happened, if I could’ve been there for you from the start. But--” He puts his hand on his son’s shoulder, looking at him firmly. “We can’t control what happened in the past, or what’s going to happen in the future. The only thing we can control is what we do today, right now.  And right now, I’m choosing to be happy spending time with my son. That’s something I can choose to do, and if it took all these bad, sad things to happen for us to be here right now, then I’m glad they did. The only you you have is the one right now, and you can choose to be whatever you want.”
