“ no , i'm fine , really . though i appreciate the help back to my feet . ” the moment she's let go of , sophie brushes any dirt and wrinkles from the skirt of her dress , looking over herself to check for tears . “ no damage , thank goodness . i'm hardly any good fixing dresses , they're so different from hats . . . ”

big brown eyes shift up to the other , expression just a tad bit brighter than when they'd found her . “ hmm . i suppose i ought to be more careful around here , shouldn't i ? ”

the sudden voice startles her , causing a light shade of pink to color across her face . sophie takes a half - step back , almost leaning against howl's chest , in some attempt to ease the fear starting to swell in her chest .

large crowds had always been intimidating . this time , even more so , thanks to a new location , the strange attire this area's soldiers wore , how much prettier she'd thought the other girls were . she could feel wrinkles starting to form on her face ― leftover remnants from the witch of the wastes , a curse that would likely never fully dissipate now that the witch had been stripped of her powers .

“ are you sure ? ” sophie turns where she stands , to stare nervously up at howl . “ once i know where i'm going , i think i'll be okay . i thought you were sending me so you could tend to something else . ”

“ oh , please , lettie , i slept just fine last night . ” despite the arguments ( and the soft grin on her lips ) , wrinkle lines threatened to form underneath sophie's eyes , though a deep breath calmed the urge . “ i've just been busy , between the hat shop and the old witch . although , markl's been quite helpful , if you must know ~ ”

it typically didn't take very long for sophie to fix her braid in the mornings . but after a rather unfortunate mishap with an unfinished hat , she had no choice but to continue working while her sister worked on re - braiding her hair . frankly , her patience would have run out by now , had it been anyone else . but for lettie , anything .

“ i'm sorry , lettie , i'm doing my best to sit still . ” her eyes focus on the aforementioned hat , now in one hand while the other pokes a needle through the fabric . “ this one's meant to replace the hat i sold yesterday , you know . really , it should have been finished already . ”

sophie had never truly worn jewelry before , let alone anything nearly as extravagant as howl's ― nothing her mother or sister ever made her try on had looked right on her , not paired with her mildly - outdated style . so , when she felt the rare compulsion to peruse a strange new shop , she naturally felt obligated to make a purchase for her favorite dramatic wizard .

as the family member of two equally - as - extravagant women , it was fairly easy to tell that the gem in question wasn't real . but she thought the green of the crystal reflected the sunlight in the same way howl's earrings did , and the false gold shined just as beautifully as real gold does . and , of course , it was well within her gift - giving budget ― another dead giveaway of it's falseness . “ just a new jeweler's shop . i saw it while i was out fetching something for dinner , i thought i'd take a look around . ”

sophie was careful with it when she handed it over , in case the metal was malleable enough to lose its shape if handled carelessly . her eyes , though , cautiously watched howl's face . and , satisfied with his reaction , she shrunk under the weight of his hand , perking back up when he pulled away . “ of course , howl , i'm glad you like it ~ ”
