with how many times he's already introduced himself in only the past couple hours , viktor had almost regretted denying the headmaster the supposed honor of introducing him over breakfast ― on the other hand , he still wasn't at all sure if he could have handled all those eyes staring back at him .

“ ah , yes , my apologies . viktor musil , arithmancy and alchemy professor . ” it was rattled off as if rehearsed ; it may as well have been , by that point . his free hand was held out for a handshake , the other preoccupied with his cane . “ you missed no introduction , it was purposefully omitted . and i am usually not out and about between classes , perhaps that explains why you have not yet seen me here . ”

he had already started towards the kitchen ― frankly , regardless of whether or not remus would have a cup , viktor would make a cup for himself . and , perhaps , conveniently fill the kettle enough for two , and leave the tea bags and a spare teacup on the counter . but he stopped , when remus spoke .

“ no , i was still awake . ” he turned in the doorway , pointing out a couple lightly worn journals laying open on the coffee table . “ re - reading old notes from when i was in university . comparing , contrasting , attempting to apply science to magic , ehh . . . as one does , i suppose . ”

in truth , sleeping was hardly an option . he'd tried to lie down hours ago . both his mind and his body fought against him ; discomfort caused him to ache when tossing and turning , and he couldn't shake that nagging need to keep reading , researching , tinkering with old recipes and designs . but , of course , remus wasn't going to pull that information out of viktor without a healthy dose of veritaserum .

“ . . . you are sure you don't want tea ? ” heading back towards the kitchen , viktor pressed himself to raise his voice , just enough to be heard through the space . “ i still have chamomile left . it might help you get rest . ”

oh but there was a need to apologise . he hated relying on those around him for assistance . he had dealt with this his whole life && he still wasn't able to ... why was he such a MESS ? why was he still like this ? his eyes cast towards viktor , his expression sad && lost . he didn't know how to ask for help && there was guilt that came around from it . he had watched his own mother succumb to illnesses , trying to help him . had watched his own father fall into misery , trying to keep him afloat . it carried inside him like a cancer , barely able to hold it together at times .

moving gingerly , he took a seat , his expression sad as he pressed his forehead against the handle of his cane . shaking his head , remus looked over . ❝ NO , ❞ he said firmly . ❝ just for tonight . i'll head to ... i'll head north tomorrow . ❞ back to his fathers . hopefully lyall would understand . ❝ i just can't travel anymore tonight . && i will be gone before dawn , i PROMISE that much . ❞ he cleared his throat painfully before shaking his head && rubbing his palm against his right leg .

❝ no need for tea , viktor . ❞ remus added . ❝ i won't take up any more of your ... hospitality . i'm FINE . ❞ that was a lie . but he hoped that viktor would understand that vulnerability was not easy . nor was it something that remus enjoyed displaying .

❝ it's late . ❞ he said quietly . ❝ why weren't you in bed ? i didn't wake you did i ? ❞

“ ah , yes , i do have quite the sweet tooth . ” an eyebrow perches on viktor's face , lips flickering into a smirk before he drops his head and , almost reluctantly , moves towards the offered seat . perhaps he ought to pay more attention to the changes in who he converses with . “ please , forgive me . severus is . . . a complicated conversationalist , i've noticed . ”

a silent nod as a thank you for the seat , and he sits . “ it is well , yes . and yours ? i have to assume your lessons are far more interesting to the students than mine . ” he takes a moment , jokingly scoffing to himself . “ mathematics in magic . i am shocked to have students at all . ”

at least his leg brace helped keep him upright . or , that's what ran through viktor's mind , at the initial moment of impact ― it would have been rather embarrassing to have simply fallen over at nothing more than a mere shoulder check . a stumble into the potions table , however , that was tolerable . he could play it off as unexpected .

“ ah , no worry . i was only surprised . ” visibly , he'd probably come off as not even listening , the way he patted himself down , bent and un - bent his leg to make sure his brace still sat where it was supposed to . but the second the girl's hand reached his line of sight , he brought his gaze up .

there was a slight hesitation , just barely noticeable , before he took up the offer to shake her hand . with a slight squeeze as he did so , in an attempt to match grip strength . “ tonks , then . my name is viktor . ” once his hand was free , he waved it through the air in dismissal , a little smirk on his lips . “ don't apologize . i like to think i'm pretty good at this . and , if i'm not , then at least we tried , yeah ? ”

“ alchemy is , in a way . a combination of potions , transmutation , and chemistry . ” with both hands occupied ― one by his cane , the other carrying his paperwork for his classes ― viktor ended up lazily motioning the journals for emphasis , careful not to bump into any passers - by ( let alone harry ) . “ chemistry , being a science more often studied by muggles . though it is intriguing , how close muggle sciences come to creating magic . ”

there was a pause , just for a split second , where viktor lets his gaze flicker to the student . raised in muggle society . viktor had certainly been there , and had even gone back for a short time . but that was himself . to suggest such a path to someone else , that was . . . difficult . “ i am hardly one to turn to for advice in such regard , i admit . but , if i may . ” feet slowed to a stop , so he could turn to properly look at harry . “ find what truly interests you . pursue that . ehh , to the best of your ability . the answer will come . ”

"Yeah people keep telling me that." Harry said with a gentle nod and a grimace, he hated his own fame- but he didn't expect a new professor to know that much. The school might think he was barmy but that didn't mean he actually was. When the new professor motioned for them to keep moving Harry gratefully nodded and followed after him.

"Wow I didn't even know that was an option for older students. I thought it'd be just mixed in with like, potions or something." Another reminder that he hadn't been raised in this world; a soft sigh escaped him. "Maybe I will be in your class then. I wanted to be an auror but now... I don't know, now I don't know what I wanna do, y'know?"

“ there is no need for apologies . ” after securing the lock on his door , viktor paced over to the couch , refraining from sitting so remus could make himself comfortable .

frankly , he had no clue what to do ; sure , he'd been in a very similar position , at least to his knowledge , but he'd only ever dealt with it on his own ― creating his own recipes , downing concoction after homemade concoction , all while telling his college roommate they were ‘ home remedies ’ . and none of them had truly worked well enough to entrust giving it to someone else .

“ stay as long as you need to . i . . . ” oh , vulnerability always came so hard to him , even when so deprived of sleep . it took a moment's contemplation before viktor could complete his sentiment with a sincere expression ; perhaps made easier when faced with such familiarity . “ i understand , not knowing when the next rest would come . i can put on some tea , it may help . ”

if anyone would understand , it would be viktor .

he had known the man less than a year but felt a kindred pull to him . knowing that he too SUFFERED at the hands of society for something he could not control . remus just hoped , prayed even to whatever deity existed that viktor would not be disgusted like others . not feel shameful for knowing a werewolf . && might help him . remus was out of options . he had no one else to turn to && through his own MISTAKES , had left him in want , he had no idea what else to do .

he stared at viktor , knowing that the other man probably had not gone to sleep yet && judging by the circles encasing the other mans eyes , remus could be sure that his assumptions were CORRECT .

❝ thank you , ❞ remus breathed quietly , moving slowly , leaning on his cane heavily as he moved in , other hand holding onto the wall as he guided himself to where viktor had indicated . ❝ i just need somewhere to SLEEP . i shall be gone before morning . i am sorry viktor , i had nowhere else to go . ❞

harry potter . he'd heard the name before , learned the stories behind it . hard not to , whenever wizards are involved , it seemed . “ your story precedes you . ” he motioned down the hall , indicating to keep walking . “ but i am sure you've heard that plenty . ”

though unexpected , viktor had found some amusement in harry's questions . as he'd learned in his own academic pursuits , however , there is no such thing as a stupid question . he merely chuckled , shaking his head . “ alchemy and arithmancy are two separate classes . but , both are electives only available to students in years six and seven , so i am only about as busy as the average professor . ”

The entire school was buzzing about a new teacher; and while Harry couldn't think of any of his classes that would require one it made sense to introduce himself, though he had almost talked himself out of it like 3 times.

"Alchemy? Really? Is that a part of Arithmancy? I thought it was math." The words came tumbling out before he realized what he was saying, but he forced himself to continue listening. Shaking the offered hand he just shrugged, "I'm Harry Potter- uh, I don't take your class but I hope you end up liking it at hogwarts."

it was no coincidence that viktor was still awake this late ; he often was , regardless of how tired he became . so when he heard a knock against his door , he paid little mind to the clock on the wall . instead , he simply reached for his own cane and started towards the door .

the sight before him , however , is what left a startled look on his face . as quickly as he could , viktor hobbled out of the doorway , motioning with his free hand for remus to enter and get settled . “ come in , come in . quickly . the couch is right against the wall . ” he lingers near remus' side ; he's much smaller than the other professor , but he would rather attempt to catch the man than let him fall on his floor . “ . . . how can i help ? ”

remus stood , best he could , clinging to the doorframe , his hand curled around the stone to keep himself steady , whilst the cane in his other hand was being used to prop him up && stop him from keeling over entirely . ❝ please . ❞ he said hoarsely , staring at them as the door opened . ❝ please , i don't know what to do . ❞

“ then i will have to try it . ” and that he will , the moment he gets the chance . another lighthearted scoff leaves viktor's throat when remus comments on their colleague's social skills , paired with a disapproving shake of his head . “ i must admit , it is a shame . he is quite brilliant in his subject . . . ”

his gaze shifts , from idly darting about the table to remus' face . the amused look on his own fades into a more . . . mildly sentimental stare , if one were try to describe it . “ you should not sell yourself short either . the headmaster is wise , i would not doubt his decision . hell , he hired me as well , do not forget . ”

a short pause , to sort of process the praise to such a subject ; a rare occurrence , considering how much magic he's surrounded by these days . “ . . . i will have to look through my bookshelf , but i should still have some of my textbooks from university . ” he busies his hands , one straightening the plate , and the other tracing the rim of his glass . “ i do not have anything on physics , but what i do have has helped me further study my subject . you are more than welcome to borrow them , if you would like . ”

❝ EXCELLENT . the treacle tart is very good tonight , ❞ remus said pulling some plates over towards viktor , brow lifted && watching the other man intently before sitting back . seemingly , viktor had been too lost in thought to realise that remus was addressing him && not severus . which was confirmed by viktors next words . a small smile flickered across remus' face . ❝ yes , well , he never made for great conversation in school either . i had no doubt in my mind that it would be the same now . ❞ he shrugged slightly before clearing his throat .

pausing for a moment , remus lifted his goblet to his lips && took a deep drink . ❝ certainly very COMPLEX , ❞ he admitted . ❝ i fail to understand why exactly professor dumbledore hired me , but , i do my best with what i can . ❞ he gave a sigh . ❝ i actually find it fascinating . ❞ he offered . ❝ now i won't pretend i entirely understand it , but muggles have a very similar structure . physics && all that . it's the building blocks && very foundation of both magic && the physical reality . it's FASCINATING stuff . ❞ a tilt of his head . ❝ don't sell yourself or the subject short . ❞
