⋆⭒˚｡‎♡‧₊˚ Author’s note: Listen, I wrote this in the span of about an hour so it’s not really a masterpiece but I still love it. Also this is so relatable bc Azriel is canonically beautiful, like drop dead gorgeous and we all know he didn’t get it from his ugly ass father, so I headcanon that his mom is identical to him, resulting in readers innocent crush on her.

Azriel looked at you with disbelief as he closed his dropped jaw. “ You have a crush on who now?”

Nervous laughter escaped you as you averted your gaze. Azriel had disclosed that his mother was alive, when he caught onto your habit of referring to her in the past tense. Unbeknownst to others, she was alive, with only Cassian and Rhysand knowing. After Azriel spilled that he usually spends Solstice with her, Sorine, his mom, went all out, cooking up a feast when she learned he was bringing his mate over for the first time. The moment you met her, you were totally floored, and your face lit up like a festive candle.

She was a carbon-copy of your mate and they were equally beautiful. It was like looking at a female version of Azriel. Her looks paired with her kindness and caring nature made you develop a tiny crush on her.

"Well, look who Azriel brought to brighten our home! Come here, both of you. I've been eager to meet the one who's captured my son's heart."

Smiling, you and Azriel exchanged glances before approaching her. "Thank you for having us. I've heard so much about you. It's truly an honor to be here." Azriel softened by a hint of a smile, added "Mother, It's about time you met the person responsible for bringing some light into my life."

Azriel's mother, Sorine, observed you for a moment, a twinkle in her eyes. "My, Azriel, you didn't mention just how beautiful your mate is. You've got a good eye."

You, feeling a bit bashful, stammered out a heartfelt thank you, your cheeks warming. And it certainly didn’t help when she gave you a hug, her scent reminding you of your mate. Azriel, standing beside you, couldn't help but chuckle at your adorable blush, whispering, "Told you so," as his mother's compliment lingered in the air.

Presenting her with the basket of treats and gifts, you eagerly explained each item when she asked. " Heavens, thank you so much, sweetie. What a thoughtful gift," she exclaimed, kissing your cheek and flashing you Azriel’s infamous smile. Heat prickled your face, you averted your eyes, replying, "Oh, no problems, Ms. Sorine." Her heartfelt laugh filled the room, and she insisted you called her Sorine when you returned to the dinner table to start the meal.

Azriel noticed you squirming at dinner, not being able to fully look in Sorine’s eyes. Curiosity peaked in him, resulting in him pulling you aside when she went to prepare dessert. He gripped your chin and waited nervously for you to answer while a million thoughts ran through his head.

Was it too early to meet her? Did you like his mother? Why did you not keep eye contact with her? Was this a mistake?

All of his unease dissipated when you confessed to him about your unexpected, lighthearted crush on his mother.

“It’s embarrassing because I don’t want her to think i’m weird but I kinda have a teensy, tiny crush on your mother. Look, it’s no big deal but she is so beautiful and hot and I can’t help it. She’s so kind to me and I love her so much. And no wonder you’re a stunner, you totally stole your looks from your her.”

Azriel couldn't help but burst into laughter at your confession. Seeing the humor in your silly crush, he reassured you with a warm smile, "Don't worry, love. It's adorable, and I'm flattered. My mom will probably find it amusing too. Nothing to be embarrassed about."

Amused, Azriel gently cupped your face, his eyes filled with affection. "Besides," he continued, "it's endearing that you're so genuine. My mom will love you for who you are, crushes and all." He leaned in for a tender kiss, trying to ease any lingering unease. "Just be yourself because she started loving you the moment I mentioned you. She also threatened to do not so nice things to me if I ever hurt you."

A sigh of relief mixed with joy escaped you as Azriel's mother walked in, bearing a tray of delightful desserts. The atmosphere lightened, and you gradually let go of any remaining awkwardness. Engaging in conversation, you found a genuine connection with your mate's lovely mother.

As she shared stories, advice, and warmth, you felt a growing appreciation for the woman who had played a significant role in Azriel's life. You rolled your eyes, sensing there was more to his response since he always gave a weird poetic expression whenever he was trying to deflect. "Spill, Rhys. I know there's a story there."

With a theatrical sigh, Rhysand leaned in, lowering his voice conspiratorially. "Let's just say Azriel has a well-deserved reputation for being quite protective. I may have complimented his mother once, long ago, and let's just say he made it clear that some subjects are off-limits. Actually, me and Cassian called her a milf and he beat us up.”

You burst into laughter, imagining the stoic Azriel fiercely defending his mother's honor.

"That sounds about right, atleast I know what not to call her.”

Rhysand winked, "Smart move. Now, any more family secrets you want to find out about, or shall we leave the mystery intact?"

With a smile, you decided to leave the mystery for another day, content with the warm meeting with his mother.

So recently MTG had to ban the vampire card Vein Ripper because it could be cheated into play on turn three by Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord, all because Vein Ripper is a vampire. Looking at the combo, the combo appears really obvious. My question is, do designers not keep some book of warnings for future designers to avoid potentially broken combinations? For example, a searchable word document that says “be careful making an item that does X because of Y existing item”?

Nah. Trying to do this basically results in hopelessness because there's no end to it where you need to design a couple hundred new and different cards every year. It's such a combinatoric explosion and there are so many potential interactions that it quickly becomes an unsustainable mess. It's generally better to look at how things work and adjust as you go, since there's just too much complexity for any single designer (or even design team) to know about. You do your best and you adjust as you go. That's the best you can really hope for.

Let's also be clear - Wizards of the Coast didn't ban Vein Ripper at all. Vein Ripper is still legal in every format. WotC banned Sorin Imperious Bloodlord in the one format (Pioneer) that they felt it was overpowered (and Explorer, the online-only format version of Pioneer), because nobody cares if a 6/5 flyer comes down for "free" on turn three in Modern or Legacy when even a 20/20 indestructible flyer two-card combo on turn two isn't strong enough. In this kind of situation, Sorin was the combo enabler and Vein Ripper was just the nastiest free vampire that was in the format for Sorin to drop. Banning Vein Ripper would only be a temporary measure until the next big nasty vampire entered the format that could drop on turn three.

You know what? This is canon now. I think Jack doesn't actually believe in ghosts but insists on trying to summon one just to spook out Deimos.

Omg, no lol. Deimos is so anxious about what people think of him and seeming perfect all the time, he would feel too awkward to do that and risk the others in the spaceship hearing him.

Cassiopeia has an incredible long-term memory but an awful short-term memory.

Eh... I mean, if she has been pulling all-nighters and drinking too much coffee I can definitely see her forgetting short-term stuff really clumsily, but she normally has pretty good long-term and short-term memory.

Vesper is very good at walking in platform heels.

I mean... she's a cyborg so she probably has uncannily good walking balance, so likely yes. But since she's all about practicality, she ain't trading her special combat boots (that have built-in wheels she can activate) for anything in the known universe lol

Aleks knocks people over by hugging them.

I can actually see that happening fr. Aleks is really clumsy, and is also really friendly and loves a good prank, so he's the perfect mix for this to happen lmao.

Noctus is oblivious to any and all romantic interest someone may show him.

THIS IS ACTUALLY CANON. Noctus is as oblivious as a doorknob to any kind of affection directed to his person and is genuinely confused/weirded out when someone is "too nice" to him.

Gabi has an intense fear of spiders.

Yeah, no. That would be a headcanon more suited to Jack, who has insectophobia, but Gabi? She don't care lol. She will smack a spider with her bare hands and carry on like nothing happened.

Pax almost drank the lethal dosage of caffeine once.

I don't think he likes coffee nearly that much on regular days, but if he had to pull all-nighters to pass an important test or something? I can definitely see him accidentally doing something like this and being hella confused when he wakes up in the hospital.

Ethean has a Roblox account.

Roblox doesn't exist in their universe, most likely, but he probably has an account of the in-universe equivalent of Roblox lmao. He pretends he doesn't but he probably does.

Sorin was raised to be a warrior and is on a journey to get revenge on the man who killed her father, I think she hasn't worn a dress in a while now - mainly because she is pretty attached to her armor, though she does really like dresses - and probably hasn't worn a maid dress ever.

How much of the "Sorin spends all his days moping around" stuff is legitimate versus just am internet meme?

This is a very good question, and I think the answer is that it really depends.

We are meant to believe that a Pre-Zendikar Sorin is actually a very active and busy person. He travels the multiverse to learn, explore, and generally act as a positive presence on the plane; we don’t know a lot of details about what exactly he did that was good, but his Planeswalker bio and several other lore documents want us to believe that he has a long history of helping other planes aside from Innistrad and Zendikar (as much as you can call what he did there “help”.

Sorin does avoid helping with a lot of the main conflicts for a lot of the Eldrazi arc though. He is still out doing things that could help (resurrecting Ugin for example), but he is very much on the side and not exactly improving the situation beyond that. During SOI he even acts as an active detriment to the saving of Innistrad by killing Avacyn (a good choice for her, but really bad for the people of Innistrad) and choosing to fight Nahiri instead of Emrakul, considering Innistrad a lost cause to be avenged. He is active and doing things, but they’re not always the most helpful-

A Post-War of the Spark Sorin is a very different story.

Sorin was left in a deep depression after the death of Avacyn, and spent the next two years grieving and sulking in the ruins of his family home. He did not do anything to stop eternal night from falling on Innistrad despite not actually wanting it to fall, and when The Gatewatch + Adeline and Arlinn came to ask him to lend them an artifact that would help them put a stop to it, he refused to allow them to borrow it and was very much unhelpful, even attacking Arlinn for mentioning Avacyn’s name. He actively tried to prevent them from doing something he wanted done.

By the time Crimson Vow rolls around (about one month after eternal night fell at the end of Midnight Hunt) Sorin seems to be motivated enough to at least ask his grandfather for advice on how to help the plane, and with the motivation of The Gatewatch and being forced to confront his past and the trauma that led him to that behavior to begin with he seems to develop into a character who does want to help people and do things again by the end of VOW.

We haven’t seen him on screen since the end of the wedding, but in that time he has gone out of his way to take the sick and injured into his home so he could care for them, team up with Arlinn Kord to prepare Innistrad for the Phyrexian invasion, and went out of his way to warn a few of the necromancers of Innistrad of the Phyrexians, possibly because of the undead’s resistance to the oil.

TLDR: Sorin was a very active character to both good and bad ends before Innistrad was invaded by Emrakul, but ended up in a grief induced sulk until the beginning of Crimson Vow (a set released five years after Eldritch Moon and taking place about 2 years after in universe) to the point where he would actively prevent other people from doing things that he wants done. I think the whole joke originates from that, and from the fact that Sorin has generally just proven not to always be the most helpful character around despite how insanely powerful he is and how much potential he has to help other people.

Thankfully it looks like Crimson Vow really did help him grow as a character, and it seems like he is going to be more helpful than ever before considering he finally has a support group and cut off his shitty family. What we have seen of him since then all looks to be a massive shift and character and it’s all looking up from here :D.

I think Grendan met Jancy because he was getting away from her parents and trying to make a new life, but they were down on his luck and needed to room with someone, and Jancy took her in.

The contraption was Grandma’s, it was for Jancy’s birthday but Sorin went in the house first because he and Jancy were working on a case together. Lotta and Emery aren’t really in this au since I’m not sure where they would fit. (I still need to figure out how the incident in the park happened.)

Rosé ABSOLUTELY ate two entire chickens from the Chicken Kitchen and flirted with Harper. She’s silly like that.
