Is it true that togashi said that he has 3 or 4 stories after the caa ? (if he did please give me the source)

Hello anon!

So, this is a commonly cited bit of info in discussions about HxH. However, after doing some research into the interview it allegedly came from (an interview between Togashi and Oda, the creator of One Piece), I'm uncertain on the legitimacy of this interview.

The mostly commonly cited source for the interview is here, on the HxH Wiki, but it was deleted for some reason. Other Togashi interviews remain up on the HxH Wiki, and I imagine this one was deleted for a reason, possibly because it can't be corroborated.

Here's a poorly-translated version of the interview I found. It could be a result of the poor translation, but the interview itself seems a bit odd to me... Here's another version, slightly different wording but same issues. And here's the French version of it that the other two articles seem to be referencing, which says at the bottom (thanks Deepl): "edit GrM: excerpt from MH from October 2011, no source link to the itw, so until then, to be taken with a pinch of salt and thank you for not leaving in flood."

I'm having trouble finding any scans or photos of this interview in Japanese, which makes me even more skeptical and uncertain. @yyh4ever, do you happen to have any information on this interview and whether it exists or not?

Because Togashi and Oda are both massively popular, I feel like info on a joint interview between them shouldn't be difficult to find. I found this image of Togashi and Oda together, but this doesn't seem to be that interview from what I can make out and I can't find any full versions of that article either. By comparison, Togashi's interview with Kishimoto is all over the place, even on the Viz site (Link 1, Link 2).

If anyone finds a reliable source for this interview between Togashi and Oda, I'd love to hear about it, but for now I would consider this info unsubstantiated! I'm surprised because I previously thought that this was reliable information as well. It's possible it is real, but unless someone provides solid info of its legitimacy, I'm going to assume it's probably fake. It's weird and interesting how much fake information about Togashi exists out there, that's why I'm careful when researching anything people say about him.

Shaiapouf's Wings

Hello hello, I've returned with another biological meta analysis! This time I'd like to discuss: wings!

When a butterfly first emerges from the chrysalis, its wings need to dry and expand, so the insect will usually hang underneath the chrysalis or a nearby structure so gravity can help to fully draw the wings out. In addition to gravity, the insect will pump body fluid into its wings to help them expand; this is a process it only needs to perform once, as it is done to unfold the wings so they can harden and be used for flight.

Pouf's wings open and close at his will, suggesting a similar but only slightly more complex biology; he seems to have control over either his own bloodflow (forcing it into his wings to open them) or the surrounding muscle structures (guiding bloodflow into the wings). It could also be reasonable to believe that the channels he uses to open his wings may not need to stay open the entire time he's using them - the channels could open as the wings open, then close while they remain open, re-opening once he needs to close them. This excludes the idea of it simply being part of his nen; while the abilities he demonstrates while using his wings (i.e. - Spiritual Message) are nen derived, I believe that the wings themselves are firmly an insect feature he naturally possesses.

Now let's about colors! The biggest draw to the insect is the wings - people can't reliably identify butterflies without their wings (which is something I encountered in research I had personally conducted), with patterning being the quickest way to tell species apart. So, how does color and pigmentation in wings work?

There's a number of factors at work, but the barest answer is, of course, genetics. A study from Cornell University found that a notable amount of genes seem to be preserved across species, suggesting that a lot of the patterns and colors may have emerged from a common ancestor across species. Lots of butterflies also employ forms of mimicry, such as Batesian mimicry (non poisonous species evolving to resemble poisonous ones to evade predators) and the development of characteristics such as eyespots. Wings can also be largely different in the same species due to sexual dimorphism, which certain species of swallowtails being excellent examples of such.

So what does this mean for Pouf? A lot of discussion of genetics goes out the window when it comes to the biology of the chimera ants, so the space for speculation begins to shrink. While a broader discussion isn't totally feasible, I believe the individual aspects of his wings can still be topics for conversation, namely the heart pattern and the rainbow gradient. The gradient can easily be read as iridescence, a property that develops not from the pigmentation of the wing itself, but due to the way light refracts through the scales (most strikingly and famously visible in the blue morpho); this can be interpreted as Pouf having scales that are most likely completely clear and at various angles, making them appear in rainbow colors as he moves. Scales not being fully aligned can also be read in line with him employing them as a offensive/defensive tactic - the scales rapidly repopulate, hence why they may be regenerating unevenly. As for the heart pattern, I believe two biological explanations may be at play. One is that they could represent modified eyespots (prominent in the common buckeye) or general patterning (like the white dots on a monarch), or they could simply be a stunningly unnatural-looking development (like the number pattern on the "89" butterfly).

Another point I'd like to discuss is Pouf's hypnotic scales. Personally, I think it's a bit of a shame it's not known at what dosages the effects kick in, because I think it could make for an excellent contender in a discussion about poison, which is actually something that butterflies fit into quite neatly! Many species employ poison as a defense mechanism, most famously the monarch, which gains it ability from the poison in the milkweed plants the larvae host on. Overwhelmingly, larvae consuming toxic plants is what gives the adult insect a chemical defense; this concept, like the pervious, becomes much more difficult to work with when given the chimera ants' biology, not just with Pouf having begun life as an adult, but also with him being heavily implied to be carnivorous, making him unlikely to be consuming toxic plants in his spare time. I believe this is where some give needs to be given and for the toxic/hypnotic properties to be chalked up more to nen, though it can also be assumed that the poison is just part of his base state, the same way his wings are.

In the future, I'll be returning to this to discuss the mechanics of flight ✨️

Ok so now that Hunter x Hunter has started to pick back up and Togashi has gotten back to ripping our hearts out and shooting us down like dogs while telling us to read his manga (which we will), I wanted to talk about the significant number of parallels between aspects of Yu Yu Hakusho and parts of Hunter x Hunter that show how much Togashi laid the groundwork for HXH in YYH. As well as how he improved and revised many aspects of his previous work.

Originally, I was going to make this one whole post, but because of how much I wrote in this one, I figured I would just make it multiple parts.

Spoilers for HXH and YYH

Part 1: The Power Systems and their similarities/differences, and how Togashi demonstrates Limits

Nen and Spirit Energy are both very similar in multiple ways. For example, both have very similar sources, with Spirit Energy being something all humans have, and Nen being something all beings have.

Now then, what I want to talk about is the differences between them first.

Spirit Energy is something everyone can use, but unlike Nen, signature techniques are just that, techniques. For example, let's take a look at one of the best examples of this and wasted potential: Rando

Rando is a demon whose whole thing is that he steals techniques, but not like Chrollo(Trust me, we will get into Chrollo), but in that he just learns them. To put it in a way that makes sense, Spirit Energy is malleable, anyone who has Spirit Energy (or Demon Energy) can replicate and learn other techniques with the only setback being that you would run the risk of not mastering them and not knowing how to use them all efficiently like Rando did.

Unlike another character who is a master with Spirit Energy without overextending themselves: Genkai

Despite knowing nowhere near as many techniques as Rando, Genkai is a much better fighter than him, able to use her techniques in nearly every situation in ways that allow her to fight on a level that is nearly unbeatable, or at least was before she gave away the majority of her power to Yusuke, but even then she was able to go toe-to-toe with Shishiwakamaru, a demon who had the ability to summon hundreds of dead souls to attack indiscriminately.

Genkai is a master of Spirit Energy, even if she doesn't have as much power as the rest of the main characters.

Meanwhile let's take a look at a Nen User from Hunter x Hunter, a character you may or may not know (/j): Hisoka

Now setting aside Hisoka's.... """tendencies""", when it comes to his proficiency in Nen, he's one of the best in the series, with his Nen Type being Transmutation, which would make his nen chart look something like this

Now then, his Main Nen Ability is known as Bungee Gum, which contains the properties of Rubber and Gum, which is known. He Transmutes his Aura into an elastic and stretchy material which he can stick onto anything, and can do multiple things such as catch objects, immobilize opponents, or create flail-like weapons to swing around with. That is Hisoka's Hatsu, his personal expression of Nen. That is his main weapon until the day he dies, and cannot be changed as far as we know.

But that doesn't mean he can't do things that aren't too far from Transmutation, such as Conjuration, which he exemplifies with Texture Surprise, a technique which allows him to create images and textures on top of flat surfaces, such as paper, and can change its appearance. He uses this technique in creating fake tattoos or even fake skin all over his body to make himself look normal, when really he looks like this

So needless to say, Hisoka is an extremely adept Nen user. But the fact is, like everyone else, he has to stay in his lane, or else he'll end up like another Nen User in the series: Kastro

Kastro is an Enhancer, he was born one, which means that his potential is limited to that of an Enhancer's, which looks like this

According to an extremely talented Nen Teacher: Wing, Kastro could have been a master of a technique that most Enhancers can use, the Tiger Bite Fist, which may have helped him achieve his goal... But instead of developing his Hatsu and enhancement abilities he chose to use a technique that was completely incompatible with his own: The Double Technique.

The Double Technique is fairly self-explanatory, you make a double of yourself out of Nen, and manipulate its actions into fighting alongside you. It's an amazing technique, but the fact of the matter is that for a majority of Nen Users, it's one that is either lopsided, or just more trouble than it's worth, because it is a combination of Manipulation and Conjuration. The only type of Nen User that it would work perfectly for is a Specialist, which are one in a million in the world of Hunter x Hunter, and even then it requires an extremely high amount of focus due to the amount of precision the management of an entire second body requires, because it is not an automated body, or a clone of your mind, you have to use Manipulation Nen in order to make it do anything, and that is why Kastro was doomed when he tried to make it work.

Because of his status as an Enhancer, while Kastro technically has an equal amount of proficiency in Conjuration and Manipulation Nen, he is restricted to mainly lower-level techniques, or he has to use every bit of his Nen if he wants to even touch higher level techniques of those types, which is what he does with the Double Technique, and because of it, he dies.

In both series, Togashi demonstrated the consequences of overreaching when it comes to the amount you can do, and the consequences of trying to do more than what you can handle, but he demonstrated it in Hunter x Hunter in a much more detailed way than Yu Yu Hakusho, not to discredit Yu Yu Hakusho, as it also does a swell job of it. But yeah, that's all I wanted to say about the power system for now.

For Part 2, I'll be discussing the differences between the dynamics of the Main 4 in each show, With Yu Yu Hakusho having Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei, and Hunter x Hunter having Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio

Napoleon

Napoleon would be a royal dictator. He is the leader of a corrupt, authoritarian regime, hellbent on conquering the world. Think Hela (Thor: Ragnarok or The Darkling (Shadow and Bone). He controls people with his massive armies, and believes he is the only rightful ruler in this world. He believes that the world should be remade in his image so it can be restored to its former glory. He craves power and he will stop at nothing to get it. His armies are tools that swore their lives and souls to his cause. He feels no remorse in sacrificing them for his greater good. The only thing that would satisfy him now, is seeing the world crushed under the heel of his boot.

Leonardo

Leo as a villain would be like Iron Man gone bad. He does what he does simply out of curiosity he wants to see if it would even work. Cyberterrorism is just a tool for him. He would make modifications to his own body so that his eyes can see x-Ray, night vision, and other people’s biological information, and his brain is directly connected to the internet. He would create an entire army of robots like Ultron (Marvel) or Terminators. He hacks into government servers and international television broadcasts. He takes over entire governments simply by sitting in his lab controlling his army from a tablet. He can destroy anything connected to the internet with a flick of his finger. He wouldn’t even have to get up out of his chair. His plans would be so well thought out that no one would realize what happened until they’ve already lost.

Dazai

Dazai would be unhinged and reckless. He’d completely detach himself from human emotions and commit as many insane heinous crimes as possible till he does something bad enough that he would get killed for it. He creates an alternate persona for himself like the Joker or Hisoka (HxH), and at that point he has buried his emotions so well that he fails to differentiate between his persona and his true self. He may not actively acknowledge it but his true goal is to just go out in a blaze. It doesn’t matter how many lives it costs to do so.

Jean

Jean would be walking a fine line between villain and antihero. His main motivation is wiping out the people he considers evil, to make the world a “better place”. However, he would take it to a point of mass murder. There would be major battles breaking out between the people that support him and the people that believe what he is doing is evil. He believes he is bringing divine justice upon those who deserve it and thinks this is the way to atone for his past sins. Sound familiar? Jean would be Kira (Death Note). He is also similar to The Hood (Arrow). He has no mercy and he will not hesitate to kill.

Comte

Comte is rich enough to buy world leaders. He is the puppet master behind every single nation of the world. No one suspects him, however he slowly takes over countries one by one. He would also run some kind of underground mafia operation that’s involved in pretty much every kind of trade there is. He gets his money from so many sources that even if one is cut off, he is still rich enough to maintain his control over politicians and famous businessmen. Comte is the leader of the secret societies that the world’s richest people are involved in. The world answers to him and you would never even know. (Similar to Kingpin (Marvel) and the Court of Owls (DC)

Sebastian

Sebastian was adopted by Comte after ran away from his family. When he was young, hs saw firsthand how cruel the world can really be. He wholeheartedly believes the world is better off being run by Comte, and has pledged complete loyalty to him. He is Comte’s right hand man and he runs most of their underground mafia operations. He is incredibly versatile and does whatever Comte needs from him. Acting as a proxy? Assasinating a world leader? Leading a heist? Sebastian can do it all. His ideals have been so skewed growing up with Comte, that he sees himself as an extension of Comte’s power. Nothing more. He is a loyal weapon to be used by his boss.

Vincent

Vincent would release his emotions and would be unable to handle it mentally. He would be a serial killer who escaped from an asylum after losing his mind. He would kidnap his victims and slowly bleed them out as he paints with their blood. His specialty is carving designs into his victims after they have bled out and died. He leaves a sunflower at every crime scene and each new murder is just his latest artistic masterpiece left for the world to see. One way or another his art will be remembered, and it will cause the whole world to feel as much as he does.

Theo

Theo is driven by rage. Rage towards the world, towards the way he and Vincent were treated. His strength and anger would translate into him having an incredibly powerful monstrous form. His only goal is destruction. He wants to tear apart the society that allows people to get hurt like he did. He would be similar to Venom (Marvel), Abomination (Marvel), or Eren (Attack on Titan). Blinded by rage, he looses sight of his original goal and devoted himself to destroying everything he sees. It doesn’t matter who gets killed, they’re just collateral damage.

Isaac

Isaac can be two different types of villains all in one. On one hand, he’s a mad scientist who happened to discover a chemical combination that can be weaponized. However his insatiable bloodlust drives him to weaponize his discovery for himself. He wants people to know fear like he does (think Scarecrow (Batman). I can see him laying with Leonardo and helping upgrade his robot army with that chemical. On the other hand, when he lets himself give in to that bloodlust, he won’t stop unless he is stopped by someone else (like ripper Stefan from Vampire Diaries). He rips apart his victims like a wild animal. His crime scenes are covered in blood with dismembered body parts.

Mozart

Mozart would be an assassin for hire. He’s like a ghost. There have been stories about him but no one truly knows who he is. He works in the shadows and kills efficiently and without hesitation. One of his specialties is creating various sound waves that can kill his target. For those type of kills he doesn’t even need to leave his base, he can simply hack their device and cause it to play that frequency. Comte has hired him before to carry out certain kills he couldn’t do himself because of his position. Mozart is extremely devoted to his job will kill anyone who gets in the way of him and his target.

Arthur

Arthur would be a mix between Moriarty and Kilgrave (Jessica Jones). He would have some kind of mind controlling ability that allows him to create loyal puppets for his elaborate schemes. He loves playing games with the people suspecting him and he leads them in circles with their investigations. Sometimes he will even offer to personally help investigate cases he is responsible for, just to lead them into dead ends and plant fake clues. Every crime of his is a masterpiece with countless layers going into it. He does not see the people involved as humans. They’re just his pawns in his game of chess. Arthur just wants to see how far he can go before he finds a worthy opponent that can solve his cases.

Shakespeare

Shakespeare would be a theatrical serial killer who later escalates to mass murder. He would start out by abducting people he believes to “fit the role” he has planned for them. He would then kill them, replicating famous death scenes from plays and movies he admired (or his own plays). Each crime scene would be perfectly set up with lighting, makeup, and costuming. This would escalate later on to him and his troupe taking massive groups of people hostage, forcing them to read lines and act out various gruesome plays. When someone dies in the play, the actors have to murder each other. If they refuse, Shakespeare murders them both out of rage and brings in new people to replace them. He will not stop until he creates his perfect play.

Hey there! Looking for recommendations. What less popular series are you reading in jump?

hey there! in terms of less popular/newish series in jump, here’s what i’m currently reading:

undead unluck i was put off initially because one of the first promo images for this series was a dude groping a girl’s tits but if you can overlook that in the first chapter it’s genuinely a wonderful series with a lot of cool worldbuilding and extremely likable characters. maybe one of the most unique series in jump right now. also the author is a self-professed togashi fanboy and was highly inspired by hxh so hxh fans would probably enjoy it.

agravity boys a gag series about four stupid boys stuck in space who are a source of amusement for a mysterious all-powerful being (and then later four more stupid boys show up). i think the comedy is very much your-mileage-may-vary and perhaps my taste is just trashy but i’ve genuinely laughed out loud at this series on multiple occasions and will be devastated if jump axes it. (at times it can also be unexpectedly wholesome.)

magu-chan: god of destruction magu-chan is a wholesome gag/slice of life series about a girl who accidentally unseals a tiny cthulhu-like creature named magu and the hijinks that follow as they live together. i really cannot stress how wholesome this series is, i love it so much.

chainsaw man technically this series is extremely popular for something running in jump that doesn’t have an anime yet so maybe it doesn’t belong in this list but wanted to mention it anyway. it’s a dark action series with a lot of gore and generally gross things but i’ve found it really compelling. some people describe it as a “spectacle” more than anything else and honestly that’s accurate. anyway it seems to be ending very soon and people think an anime announcement is inevitable so you might be seeing more about this series in the near future.

sakamoto days this literally just debuted in jump and only has two chapters but i think it’s very promising. it’s about an ex-hitman who runs a convenience store with his wife. seems like it’ll be action/comedy and i’m excited to read more.

bonus: spy x family technically this isn’t run in weekly shonen jump but instead on jump+ but it’s also become a big success despite not having an anime yet either (it’s still pretty new so probably not enough material to cover right now). it’s a comedy series about a fake family unit composed of a spy, an assassin, and an esper. genuinely hilarious, i just wish this one minor character in it wasn’t in love with his sister. oh well, we can’t have it all.

(also jujutsu kaisen just got an anime and i guess qualifies as “popular” now but i would feel weird excluding it so shoutout to jjk)

if people in the hxh universe don't know what's beyond the dark continent, and their world just exists within a larger one, does that mean that they're all flat earthers? 😶 or at least don't know how far the world stretches / if it's even a globe

had to ask friends for this and unfortunately couldn't find images to back me up. what we know:

people are not aware that the dark continent exists, and don't know it's exact whereabouts. we see it's a touchy subject due to how dangerous it is until the kakin emperor spills the beans. even with this, the Hunter's association lies on the

the world is referred to as Earth and globe. only source we could find for this is Machi's power description in the auction arc, but it's fair to assume this is the case for most folks

couldn't find any mentions of a flat earth or any pictures of a globe so can't say anything about that... but they definitely are ignorant of the boundaries of the world. how far it stretches for sure; size of the globe not sure you can lie about that but a big globe doesn't mean there's stuff on there. Maybe in a future we'll have a plot point or two about how controlled scientific papers are to mask the truth...

I’m trying to work through older asks more like I used to with HxH, shorter form stuff, you know? Anyway, this is silly so a good starting point (also thank you! I love writing that story and going through my inbox I saw so many kind messages. I didn’t reply to them, but know that everyone’s words mean more than I can say)

Dimitri - There’s fanart of him as a firefighter and I like that. However, I guess it’d make more sense if he had a net worth we could only dream of and inherited a company of some sort from his father so that’s what I’m going with. Aside from running that, I think Dimitri would be someone who uses his fortune to engage in a lot of philanthropic work. Also, bless modern mental health care. 

Dedue - If we’re going aesthetics, Dedue would also be a Firefighter. Or a famous chef, famous for his intimidating appearance contrasted with his world-famous dishes. Although, hear me out. Dedue was someone whose city or w/e was destroyed by negligence or conflict of some kind and he works with Dimitri to protect his people and built his home back up.

Felix - Raised in a wealthy military family, Felix enlisted and served in the Army as soon as he was able but became disillusioned with the military after the death of his brother and returned home. After that, he became super involved with martial arts and wound up opening a gym, inadvertently taking in other young and disillusioned kids and giving them a healthy method of self-expression.

Sylvain - Rich boy. Bad reputation. E-Celeb. He lends his skills to the social media inept Dimitri to promote and help with all of his philanthropic work. He does a lot of good things but keeps it under wraps to maintain his superficial image. 

Ingrid - She runs Dimitri’s personal security force with a side gig of anonymous restaurant reviewing.

Annette - Chemistry professor at a university and rabid overachiever who makes consistent strides in the science world and inspires her students. She knows the Faerghus crew because she’s gone to them to make a case for funding scholarship programs.

Mercedes - Mercedes went to school to became a nurse, which is where she met Annette, and then she met Felix through Annette. Since many of the kids at his gym aren’t likely to go to get actual medical help, he calls her if there are any incidents. At the same time, she is an active participant in her local church and charity drives.  

Ashe - Okay I think he’d have a really idealistic sense of justice as a kid, but that slowly became warped as he grew up. He met Ingrid through Felix’s gym and wound up getting a position on Dimitri’s security team, seeing the work that Dimitri does as a sort of justice.

Edelgard - I wanna say like a politician or lawyer, but the fictional kind where they have solid values and beliefs and do good things in the name of justice. Edelgard would be more vocal about her desire to change things entirely rather than follow the system as it is.  

Hubert - Obviously he works with Edelgard. Sharing her ideals of justice, he acts as a behind the scenes confidant of sorts. Irl he’d be a bit less simp-y, working with her because he believes in her ability to make a change rather than some blood-intrinsic duty.

Ferdinand -  Similar to Edeglard, but more invested in the idea of working within the system to make a change. Despite that conflict, they do work together quite often, respecting the ideals of the other and acknowledging that ultimately they do want the same thing.

Dorothea - Musical theater STAR who is very passionate about social issues, namely the treatment of younger and less famous people in the industry. She uses her platform to promote up and coming actors and all of the backstage production crews that are so often ignored and abused.

Caspar - Head of Edelgard’s security for sure. Grew up a rich kid but separated from his family pretty much completely, deciding to make his own way in the world.

Linhardt - Tech guy. Cybersecurity maybe? At some point, he got hired by Edelgard and works with Caspar bc ofc he does. He makes it clear that it’s not an issue of morality that makes him loyal, but because it’s a fun challenge. 

Petra - An ambassador from a smaller country trying to establish more friendly relations for her people. People underestimate her because of her language skills, which actually works out for her sometimes because they don’t expect her political maneuvering. 

Bernadetta - An extreme introvert who inherited her father’s company but manages most of it remotely, also focusing on her artistic endeavors. Probably has a super popular webcomic appealing to comically exaggerated introverts everywhere.  

Claude - He attended a prestigious university and quickly fell into a career in journalism. Not like, trashy tabloid style, but actual journalism that is well researched and meant to hold people in power accountable. His background and source of wealth are mysterious, leading people to spend an inordinate amount of time speculating about his race online. Claude also uses memes and snappy editing as misdirection. 

Hilda - She’s famous for being famous and rich. However, in the midst of all of that fame, she befriended Claude and actually came to stand for a cause. But on the lowest of keys, most of what she posts is makeup reviews and glamorous photos. Gamer girl.

Lorenz - His father's Thomas Wayne, but like... The bad Thomas Wayne from Joker. Weapon production and everything. Lorenz changes that, though, focusing more on those Bruce Wayne endeavors. Except he’s not Batman, but Batman’s flamboyant, eggplant-headed brother. I love Lorenz I’m sorry boo

Ignatz - An artist, of course. Works in animation, maybe? He’s drawn all of Hilda’s graphics and sprites and stuff. She even paid him!  

Raphael - He does a lot of manual labor, taking on odd jobs or anything in the name of supporting his sister. 

Lysithea - After graduating top of her class, she began working in the medical field, researching cures and other helpful medicine. Claude keeps her discoveries from going unacknowledged, and Edelgard has actually had a donation drive to fund Lysithea’s work. 

Marianne - She owns and runs an organization that focuses on taking on animal cruelty and taking care of mistreated animals. She’s incredibly organized and efficient in the way she handles things and sees results through her various charities and request for funding. 

Leonie - She works in a private security organization once run by Jeralt, taking on whatever job she gets hired for. Leonie is more interested in the work than the jobs. Drinking, too.
