Yelena: Tell me, Kate Bishop, do you get a kick out of near death experiences?
Kate: No. I was fine, I had things well in hand.
Yelena: Oh, yes, I could see that as you were dangling from the ceiling. No doubt lulling the enemy into a false sense of security.

What are your favorite pieces of media?
hhhhng Uhhhh
growing up, probably The Pendragon Chronicles- from what I recall it's a series of books about a kid who has to correct cataclysmic events on a bunch of separate worlds caused by a being who intends to end life on all of them.
One world is Modern Earth, where he's the only one able to use the portal to travel to other worlds, one is 1920's Past Earth, one is Future Earth in a sort of cyberpunk setting, one is a desert planet in the midst of war, one is a jungle world in which the dominant species is a race of bipedal cats, one is a water world where all food is farmed on a series of island-sized boats.. and I think that's all of them, unless I'm forgetting?
And on each world there's one guardian, and they meet up and fight and shit, and they can't blow their cover on any world, and each world has a large, distinct world-ending event brewing- The water one may lose their source of food, for example, and in future-earth people are wasting away in a virtual reality game they become addicted to.
It's one of the rare long series of teen books that I feel had a pretty satisfying ending despite the huge buildup, and I'd really recommend it to anyone interested.
I also really like X-Men, and Trigun, and while I haven't seen the new Percy Jackson series it was UNCONTESTED my number one favourite- I still have it on my shelf, absolute A+.
Aaaaand.... I enjoy the Batman Fandom more than most of the comics themselves but I'm in there, too. Was a homestuck cosplayer back in the day, as well. Loved Gravity Falls, loved Steven Universe.
Six Underground ins my favourite "sick at home" comfort movie. Also the only two John Wick movies in existence, shame they never made more sequels. Lord of the Rings. The Princess Diaries. Stardust. Ella Enchanted.
Oh, and the Inkheart books were FABULOUS. Really, they read like nothing else, just such a fantastic and unique flavour in fantasy!
Uhhhhh. Hellboy, too. Hell's Paradise. Bleach. Darker Than Black I vaguely remember enjoying, but I have the DISTINCT MEMORY of despising season two, so fuck that shit, whatever it was.
And I remember... oh, maybe twelve years ago, now? Really liking the spy series Nikita, and the urban fantasy Lost Girl, though I don't think I finished either.
Oh, and Elementary is a must-watch!
Poirot, too, and Perry Mason, and Midsommer Murders.
Also Blown Away, glassmaking reality series, and Forged In Fire, a bladesmith reality series.
Kitchen Nightmares, Hotel Hell, Hell's Kitchen, all good.
Puppet History. Watcher. Game Changer.
And webcomics Dead End and Check Please.
................I may need to spend more time on this

Upriver, Downriver is now available!
So, a while back we ran a Kickstarter for a tarot-infused magical river game called Upriver, Downriver, and we’re pleased to announce it’s now available for general purchase through our website!
Tumblr media
Upriver, Downriver is a queer fantasy tabletop roleplaying game about sailing along a magical river, and persisting on an impossible journey. Inspired by the Tarot, it was written by our dear friend Ella Watts, with development and editing by Sasha and layout (and river design) by Jonny. It also has some fantastic art by Max Degan and Cael Lyons.
Tumblr media
Together, you and your crew will swear a magical oath to reach either the Source of the Great River or the Sea. No one has ever come back from either destination, and each has their own challenges and rewards. But, whatever bends your journey takes, once you’ve sworn your Oath, your soul is committed to continue on towards your goal. Even in death, your ghost will be bound to your Oath and your ship, compelled to complete your voyage.
Tumblr media
During your travels, you'll visit enchanting, enigmatic and hostile locations along the River. Each location is tied to one of the major arcana, and is home to its own unique characters and challenges. Your trials and triumphs are determined by dice and tarot cards. What you do with the hand that fate and the River deals is up to you.
Tumblr media
It’s a beautiful game, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with how it came out, so check it out at our webstore!

Letter excerpt from Princess Marie of Romania to
Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna
Castel Peles, 22 August 1903
Dear Mama,
(...)
The other children are intensely excited and delighted, it's killing to hear their conversations about the new little brother (Nicolae). Carol feels as if he had triumphed them all because it is a boy whilst my daughter encouraged by Cousin Ella, come & try to persuade me to let its hair grow that it should become a girl; whilst Mignon is simply enchanted with it at it is.

fic writer meme
thank you [checks notes] @megafaunatic, @cairoscene, @englishsub, @yuebings, and @cafecliche for the tags ilu
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 15! which is solidly 14 more than i ever expected to have on there when i made the account
2. What's your total Ao3 word count? 277,844
3. What fandoms do you write for? on ao3: mdzs/cql, tgcf, shl, and dc. in groupchats/dms/my own head i’m running wild all over the place
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? 🐉 this river runs to you 💍 i’ll have you and you’ll have me 🪐 i will be chasing a starlight ⚔️ you’re the trouble that i always find 🌊 a wave crashes to shore
5. Do you respond to comments? not often; i have made multiple attempts to start replying regularly but all have eventually failed in the face of me desperately wanting to show my earnest and genuine appreciation for each comment vs. wanting to hide my blushing face under a pillow every time. also, because of who i am as a person, each time i sat down to do it i ended up spending hours making little progress and eventually decided that i will make an effort to spend those hours writing or commenting on other fics instead. i am honored by each and every one though!!!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? while i tend to write angst it is always firmly of the “with a happy ending” sort. the one exception is my shortest fic (originally posted on twitter) never been away so long, which is more of an ambiguous/open ending with implied angst. i dooooo outline the eventual happy ending in the endnotes, though. also as it CURRENTLY stands buy back the secrets ends on one hell of an angsty note, but there are two more chapters in the works to fix that.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? despite the wangxian star trek au having like 20k of deliriously happy post-misunderstanding sex, i think trrty has to have the happiest ending because not only does the fic end happily, but there are also multiple very happy codas in which wwx gets a good night’s sleep, finally gets to bang his dragon boyfriend, and, my personal fav, one by aubreyli where wangxian go flying in a thunderstorm.
8. Do you get hate on fics? not so far, for which i am grateful but mostly lucky.
9. Do you write smut? occasionally; on ao3 there’s the aforementioned trrty coda, plus the aforementioned cowritten wangxian pon farr sequence 💪
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you have written? hmm, i’m not opposed to crossovers—i’ve read some really fun ones (recent fav crossover read here)—but i’d have to be really compelled by both source materials and have a very clear vision for how they interact to want to write one myself. i’ve written a few fandom fusions (aforementioned wangxian star trek au; i also started a wangxian dragon age au but again, no dragon age characters were going to show up, just the world/setting) but no full-on crossovers. i did have one partially drafted wangxian fic that was going to have a hua cheng deus ex machina, alas.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? not that i’m aware of! it’s not something i really go looking for/concern myself with, but so far, like with fandom hate, i’m grateful to not have encountered it.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? yes! my wangxian wedding fic was translated to russian.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? i co-wrote seventy thousand words of published fic with @feyburner! and probably two hundred thousand words of unpublished fic and outlines and story ideas just for fun. even when we aren’t co-writing we tend to talk through our individual fics with each other so we’re pretty in sync when it comes to writing. i also spent like a year in @cairoscene’s DMs concocting whole outlines/zerodrafts for batfam fics together that i still cherish and reread (notable favs: tim drake ella enchanted au, concept where the waynes are cursed to suddenly feel nothing but apathy about tim and he has to deal with that, story where robin!tim gets de-aged and oops red hood is the first one to show up…). i’d say the OCBFEU is fic-adjacent and cowritten by a group of us. also shoutout to the mdzs threadfic @cafecliche and i brainstormed/zerodrafted where lan qiren gets cursed into an owl and post-cql wei wuxian is the one who unknowingly saves him.
14. What's your all time favorite ship? oh yeah it’s [loud truck goes by]
15. What is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? cyborg!wwx…i still think of you fondly. the only ao3 fic i’ve ever posted knowing i probably wouldn’t finish it but wanted to share just for fun.
16. What are your writing strengths? pangs… mining little character details for humor (or, more often, for more pangs)… i also think i’ve really improved my action writing/pacing over the last few years.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? i write actual drafts/prose fairly slowly, which can be frustrating for me. also like @yuebings i often get very caught up in trying to perfect one small part of a draft before moving on. ummmm describing outfits/settings for reasons other than immediate plot-relevant details, i’m terrible at that + remembering to do it—i literally make myself do a What Are We Looking At Here Pass while revising sometimes.
18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics? i’m not totally sure what this question is asking tbh, but it’s something i think can be done incredibly well—and, like with many things in storytelling, it’s the sort of thing where if you don’t actually speak the second language you need to be willing to put in work beyond a cursory google to try to achieve what you’re doing, and be willing to admit if it’s beyond your capabilities. i really like how the portuguese dialogue in bbts ended up and that’s 100% because @tigerjpg translated it for me and also already understood the scene/concept/characters; without them i would have found a different way to approach that scene. also, stylistically, i personally like when dialogue in other languages isn’t italicized unless there’s a real reason for it to be.
19. First fandom you wrote for? oh it was [a second loud truck whooshes by]
20. Favorite fic you have written? right now it’s bbts, because i think it’s also the fic i’ve had the most fun writing. trrty, though, will always hold a special place in my heart.
and i tag! @tlumeti, @burins, @smilebackwards, @bonesbuckleup, @hearteyeshayley, @sonosvegliato

Actually, how is Nooroo doing, in Princess Bee? Like, good grief, the poor bug. I do like to imagine he actually gets on OK with Lila, especially as she matures. Like, she’s still a manipulative con artist, but compared to "Gabriel: the Later Years" she probably seems really considerate. I mean, Nooroo's her power source, she treats him well. Like, Lila is probably offended on Nooroo's behalf about the Order's rules. Her whole thing is manipulation - this Ella Enchanted stuff is CHEATING.
Honestly Nooroo is kinda vibing? Like I write the Kwami as a bit morally gray so they're not too upset about Lila's nonsense. A little bit at times, but hey. She treats them pretty well so ya know.
He's a little concerned that Lila might go 'Gabriel 2.0' but she's reining herself back pretty well on her own.

felt like explaining more on my "the SentiKids are hybrids" theory! Keep in mind, it’s just how I see it, but I hope it at least sounds interesting! Would love to hear your thoughts!
So, I think most people are at least a little uncomfortable with the idea that many Sentimonsters are Sapient beings that Ladybug is basically killing. I personally also feel like just "creating life" like that makes the whole thing feel . . . best word I have is "cheap". Sentimonsters, to me, should read more as advanced AI, or maybe programmed toys, which sounds a bit demeaning, but that might be kind of the point? No, maybe puppets is better. They should feel like reflections of real things, but not real themselves, if that makes sense? But I also feel that them eventually BECOMING real people shouldn’t be impossible. Like, it should take either a LOT of time, or immense amounts of power, but Sentimonsters are made from human emotions, I feel like the building blocks for having them be real should be there.
Jumping to the SentiKids for a minute, the way I see it working, is you could absolutely create a "kid" with the Peacock, but it wouldn’t really act like an actual child. More like a highly advanced doll, like the ones they market to little girls, that can "eat", "poop", and "cry". Plus, you'd have to be really particular, unless you wanted them to be a child forever. One thing I headcanon, is Sentimonsters don't "grow" in the conventional sense. They are created as is, so a Senti-baby, even if they eventually become a person, would kind of be stuck in a child form. And, of course, that's not what Emilie or the others want. They want actual kids.
So, the way I see it, they kind of cheat the system a little. They don't use the Peacock to wholesale make children, but to fertilize an egg, making a fetus. The Peacock magic is sort of used as a power source, to "power" the process of making a kid, which they don’t have to think about too hard. I mean, besides the act of conception, once you're pregnant, your body kind of just . . . gets on with it, with little to no input from you. And I have no idea what kind of fertility issues were making it so that Emilie & Amelie (&Tomoe, if she didn’t just want in for other reasons) decided that magic was the way to go, but let's say that the Peacock can kind of . . . fill in those gaps, and it works very similarly to how conception works. So, the SentiKids are less straight up Sentimonsters, and more hybrids. They are born as human babies, they grow up and act like humans, cause they basically ARE human, their moms just used magic to power them as apposed to relying on biology. (I hope this is making sense)
But, the kids are still technically part Sentimonster, so they are effected in similar ways. If you are holding their Amoks, you can give them orders, but rather than seeing it as programming, I see it more like Ella Enchanted (if you've read that book). The kids HAVE to obey, but they can find loopholes if they know what to look for, and with enough strength of will, they can resist the orders all together, although it’s VERY hard, and unlike Ella, resisting hard enough doesn’t "break the spell" because the Amoks are PART of the kids, in a way Ella's "gift" wasn’t ever a part of her. The best way I've found to describe the kids themselves, would be sort of like Steven Universe, where the Amoks are analogous to Steven's Gem. The Amoks are tied to their life forces, and damaging them hurts the kids. Somewhat conversely, they also mean that as long as the Amoks are okay, the Kids can survive just about anything that might kill a regular human, the Amoks supplying energy to keep their bodies alive long enough to heal.
Anyway, the end result I see is that the kids can't "become" real. They ARE real, real people, real humans, their origin is just a little different. The Amok thing, either the kids have to keep a hold of their Amoks at all times, or find a way to "absorb" them into themselves, so they are no longer separate from them, meaning their existence becomes closer to that of "regular" humans.
Aaaaaand, that’s all I got right now, so, tell me what you think!
I love hearing thoughts and theories!!
I complete agree, I have an exchange with @princess-of-the-corner regarding the revised butterfly and one of the big things we agreed on was that all Sentimonsters being alive default feels way too easy and rather messy given the murder. Plus I don't feel it really add much to most of them conceptually when many are essentially just tools or magically generated guard dogs.
That is an interesting spin regarding the live doll angle, kudos there!
(Low key, if and when I do roll with Senti!Kagami I just have it be that Tomoe was like, "I want to magically bio-engineer my kid to be able t do all the things, maximum potential, can fulfill any role, the ideal heir" and it never went beyond that. motive wise.)
But yeah I think that is a good way to square the circle and if I had kept my revised Peaock of Evocation & Emotion, I'd have done the same thing.
Mhm I think that angle works really well for the Amoks, kudos there! Though I do tend to think the angle of them being able to survive anything doesn't work as well with the hybrid angle. I think if anything it should be more a case of like... So long as their body remains alive & the Amok un-damaged they can eventually heal from any damage.
IE, unlike most humans who stop healing after a point and scar, they don't. Which also means Kagami has to keep re-developing her calluses which sucks XD
Anyway very interesting stuff and yeah I can see the logic of wanting to absorb them or keep them safe.
Thanks for sharing!

After I read a Jane Austen novel (or any novel), I like to give myself a month or so to forget the small details before I watch an adaptation. I feel like this helps me better judge the adaptation as a whole versus hyper focusing on complete accuracy to the book. Book adaptations tend to appear in 3 distinct categories:
Normal movies (Pride and Prejudice 1940, Little Women 1933, 1949, and 1993, The Hunger Games movies, Harry Potter Movies, most modern day adaptations, etc.)
Big Budget artsy movies (Little Women 2019, Pride and Prejudice 2005, Emma 2020, I'm assuming the new Wuthering Heights movie will fall into this category.)
TV Miniseries (Little Women 1970 and 2017, Pride and Prejudice 1980 and 1995, Emma 1972 and 2009, Persuasion 1971, etc.)
The first and second category is usually viewed in two ways good and accurate to the book or absolutely despised by fans for their inaccuracy (see the Percy Jackson movies), but the fans can typically see how someone not familiar with the source material may still enjoy the movie (good story, good production etc.) I've personally never read Ella Enchanted and I love the movie, however fans of the book seem to dislike it from its massive changes from the book, which makes sense. Fans want to see accurate portrayals of their beloved book on the screen.
The third category is quite different. Most people who view these miniseries either were alive and watching British television back in the day, or are super fans of source material. Some of them have breeched containment a little bit such as Pride and Prejudice 1995, but honestly I feel that that is the only one that has reached into pop culture, but I'd would still say majority of people who have watched have read the book. It's hard to get a read on if these (specifically the bbc miniseries) are any good. They're usually long and quite accurate to the books and on the depths of tumblr and reddit the "true fans" are sharing that secretly these are their favorite adaptations. The weird thing is, they are usually right.
As a massive Little Women fan, I spent my 2023 watching pretty much every adaptation of the novel out there. While the 1993 and 1949 versions hold a higher level of rewatchability (own on DVD, rent from the library, 2 hours max), the 2017 BBC version and the 1978 NBC versions are actually my favorite. As much as I loved Pride and Prejudice 2005 the first time I watched it before I read the book, the 1995 version is always my pick in the debate, and I would truthfully say the 1980 version is my favorite. I had a hard time getting into the 1972 version of Emma (mostly due to the quality of the version I was watching, and some other circumstances regarding myself watching it. I will try to watch it again sometime though), and I love the 2020 version for the most part, Autumn de Wilde did a great job, I would definitely say (besides Clueless) the 2009 version is my favorite.
Most of these tv miniseries are stuffy, stiff, insanely long, and look on the lower end of the budget, but they absolutely captivate fans. I just started watching Persuasion 1971 last night and I'm quite enjoying it so far, even though it's not the highest quality. I'd say with Pride and Prejudice 1995 on, the production value has increased significantly. But truthfully the production values does not seen to turn people away from them. I'd rather give Emma 1972 another chance than the 1996 version with Gwyneth Paltrow.
I'm not saying that all BBC adaptations are amazing. I thought the 1970 version of Little Women was way too flat (and a little aggressive). I can't remember if it is Northanger Abbey or Mansfield Park, but the majority of people I follow on tumblr, do not like the adaptation of that novel.
I think to conclude this unnecessarily long post, what I am trying to say is that if you want to made an adaptation, make an adaptation, but if you want to make a beloved adaptation that fans really enjoy, accuracy to the source material (without being to stiff, which I think is why I perfer many of the 00s adaptations over the 70s ones) is much more important to fans than high production value.

Sisters Marie and Alix of Hesse
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Princess Alix (later Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia) and her sister Princess Marie had a very close and affectionate relationship. Marie, known as ”May” within the family, was said to be particularly kind and loving, and she had a nurturing influence on Alix,
Growing up, Marie shared a close relationship with her older sister, Alix, who was just two years older. The two spent much of their time in the nursery together and often dressed alike. However, all this changed in November 1878, when diphtheria swept through the Hessian household.
Princess Marie (May) of Hesse and by Rhine and her sister Princess Alix (Alexandra Feodorovna) were known to be close, described as "inseparable". Alix was two years older than Marie.
Princess Marie and Princess Alix of Hesse were sisters, daughters of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, and were noted for their close bond. Marie died of diphtheria in 1878, while Alix later became Alexandra Feodorovna, Empress of Russia, as the wife of Tsar Nicholas II.
In November 1878, diphtheria swept through the House of Hesse; Alix, her three sisters, her brother Ernst ("Ernie"), and their father fell ill. Elisabeth ("Ella"), Alix's older sister, was visiting their paternal grandmother, and escaped the outbreak. Alix's mother Alice tended to the children herself, rather than abandon them to nurses and doctors. Alice fell ill and died on 14 December 1878, when Alix was six years old. This was the 17th anniversary of Alice's own father's death. Marie also died, but the rest of the siblings survived. She described her childhood before the deaths of her mother and sister as "unclouded, happy babyhood, of perpetual sunshine, then of a great cloud".

Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine( Marie Viktoria Feodore Leopoldine)was born on May 24, 1874 in Darmstadt, Grand Duchy of Hesse and by Rhine, German Empire [now Hesse, Germany].
She had six older siblings, Victoria, Elizabeth, Irene, Ernest Louis, Frederick, and Alix.
Marie was known as "May" in the family. When she was a baby, her mother remarked in a letter that "little sister Maly" bore a strong resemblance to her dead brother Friedrich ("Frittie") at the same age "with such quick eyes and two deep dimples in her cheeks." A few weeks later, Alice wrote that baby "Maly" had fair skin, light brown hair and deep blue eyes. As she grew older, she smiled frequently and Alice thought that she more strongly resembled her older sister Victoria, with "fair hair, marked eyebrows and speaking eyes". She and her sister Alix, two years older, "made a pretty contrast". Her mother thought her youngest child was "enchanting" and as a toddler the little girl called her mother "my 'weetheart".Alix was her constant companion. The two girls were dressed alike and shared the nursery. The family enjoyed a trip to the seaside in the summer of 1877 and the two youngest girls were a source of delight to their mother. Sending photos taken then to her mother, Queen Victoria, Alice wrote that "May has not such fat cheeks in reality; still it is very dear. The two little girlies are so sweet, so dear, merry, and nice. I don't know which is dearest, they are both so captivating"
Alix Viktoria Helene Luise Beatrix was born in the New Palace, Darmstadt, on 6 June 1872 and was the fourth daughter of Ludwig IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, and Alice of the United Kingdom. Alix was described as being beautiful with a rosy complexion and golden hair but she was painfully shy and had a melancholic disposition which made her look perpetually sad. As a child, Alix had been nicknamed Sunny as she had a cheerful nature but that seemed to disappear after the death of her mother and she was often gloomy. Queen Victoria took an interest in the motherless Hesse children but Alix was her favourite and the Queen referred to her as her own child. Alix reciprocated the affection that was lavished upon her and signed her letters as “your loving and grateful child.”..
