ROSE: So, my mother swears that when she was in her late twenties, she was driving through Northern Ontario down a winding road through a forest,
ROSE: And she drove under a moose.
ROSE: My mom says she was driving down this winding road, the moose was horizontal on the road, and she drove under its belly.
ROSE: My brother and I were like, "We need to get to the bottom of this."
ROSE: So we did research, and we found out the height of a Toyota Tercel. We Googled the largest ever recorded moose. And the infuriating thing is,
ROSE: It could just have happened.

Always There, Women in Motorsport: Women at the 24 Hours of Daytona
Women's history in motorsport is rich, and that has always been the case. This year we will have seven women competing in the race, but back in 1966, when it was run as a 24 Hour race for the first time, we already had five women competing in the race.
The 24 Hours of Daytona was first run in 1966 but its history goes back to 1962 when it was first run as a 3 Hours race counting towards the FIA’s International Championship for GT Manufacturers (Later known as the World Sportscar Championship). 1963 would also see a 3H race. In 1964 and 65 a 2000 Km race would be held, which was about half the length of the 24H of Le Mans at that time. In 1966 the race turned into a 24 Hour race and has ran as such since with two exceptions*
*In 1972 the race was shortened to a 6 Hour race as the FIA feared the reliability of the 3.0 liter cars and in 1974 the race was not run due to the energy crisis.
In 1966 the 24 Hours of Le Mans had already run over 30 editions and with success for women at that. In 1930 Marguerite Mareuse and Odette Siko would become the first women to compete in the race, finishing 2nd in class and in 1932 Siko would even go on to win her class. The 1930s would prove to be successful for women as in 1935 a record of 10 women would compete at Le Mans. In 1957 women were prohibited from competing at Le Mans and this ban would only be lifted in 1971.
During the period of this ban, the first 24 Hours of Daytona would be run which saw two all female teams compete. Rosemary Smith and Sierra ‘Smokey’ Drolet finished 30th overall and sixth in their class in a Sunbeam Alpine. While Janet Guthrie, Donna Mae Mims and Suzy Dietrich finished 32nd overall and won their class in a Sunbeam Alpine.

Women would continue to compete at the race with another all-female team competing in 1967 consisting of Janet Guthrie, Sierra ‘Smokey’ Drolet and Anita Taylor driving a Ford Mustang. They finished fifth in class and 20th overall. Smokey would go on to win her class in 1969 driving a Corvette with John Tremblay, Vince Gimondo and John Belperche finishing sixteenth overall. That same year she would finish the 12 Hours of Sebring second in class together with Rosemary Smith. In 1970 Smokey would finish 25th overall while Donna Mae Mims competed but failed to finish

In 1977 another female team took the start Christine Beckers and Lella Lombardi would share an Inaltéra GTP but unfortunately they did not make it to the finish. In 1980 Kathy Rude would drive in the 24 Hours of Daytona for the first time, finishing eight in the GTO Class together with her teammates. That same year Anne-Charlotte Verney would finish 9th overall and fifth in the GTX class while Lyn St. James finished 17th overall and Christine Beckers would finish 47th overall.
In 1981 Rude would finish seventh overall and third in the GTU class with her teammates Lee Mueller and Philippe Martin in a Mazda RX-7, Gaile Engle (36th overall) and Vicki Smith (56th overall) would also compete. The following year she would team up again with Lee Mueller, and she achieved a class win and sixth place overall with Allan Moffat as third driver. Vicki Smith also returned with a 25th place overall and Desiré Wilson would finish 45th overall.
In 1983 Rude would return to the race, now with an all-female team. Rude, Deborah Gregg, and Bonnie Henn would finish thirteenth overall and sixth in class in their Porsche 924. Smith and St. James also competed finishing 35th and 44th overall respectively. Kathy Rude would unfortunately suffer a huge crash at Brainerd that same year which left her in a coma for several weeks. She recovered but it meant she never got the chance to compete in IndyCar where she had arranged a seat for the 1984 season. The following years also saw women compete but without much success.

In 1987 Lyn St. James finished 7th overall and first in the GTO Class, together with her teammates Tom Gloy, Bill Elliott, and Scott Pruett. Deborah Greg would finish 9th overall and 3rd in the GTO class while Linda Ludemann finished 16th overall.

Ludemann and James would continue to compete in the race in the coming years but it wasn’t until 1990 that there was success again. James would finish fifth overall and win the GTO class together with her teammates Robby Gordon and Calvin Fish in a Mercury Cougar. Ludemann would finish 17th overall.
Tomiko Yoshiwaka and Desiré Wilson would finish 47th overall in 1993. 1994 would see the return of an all-female team when Linda Pobst, Kat Teasdale, Margy Eatwell, Tami Rai Busby, and Leigh O’Brien finished 47th overall. That same year Lilian Bryner (15th overall), Kat Teasdale (17th overall) and Tammy Jo Kirk (34th overall) would also compete.

1995 saw another female class win when Lilian Bryer finished fifth overall with her teammates Enzo Calderari, Renato Mastropietro & Ulli Richter. They won the GTS-2 Class in their Porsche 911. The following year that same line-up would win their class again while they finished fourth overall. A little under 10 years later, in 2004, Lilian Bryner made history when she won the 24H of Spa overall.
In 1997 Claudia Hürtgen would finish 4th overall and first in the GTS-2 class with her teammates Ralf Kelleners, Patrice Goueslard, and André Ahrlé in their Porsche 911 GT2. This is the last female class win to date. Throughout the late 90s into the early 2000s women continued to compete in the race. The biggest success came for Milka Duno when she finished 2nd overall in 2007 with a Riley mK XI together with Dario Franchitti, Marino Franchitti, and Kevin McGarrity. This remains the highest overall finish of a female driver to date.
In 2019 an all-female entry returned when Simona de Silvestro, Katherine Legge, Bia Figueiredo, and Christina Nielsen finished 32nd overall and 12th in the GTD class in an Acura NSX GT3. The following year Tatiana Calderon, Rahel Frey, Legge and Nielsen competed in a Lamborghini Huracan but failed to finish.

From 2013 up until the race this year, at least a single woman has competed. With a record of entries coming in 2024 when nine women competed. This year 7 women will compete in the race with Karen Gaillard making her debut in the race.

Festivids Recs
What a bonanza of great vids! I received three wonderful vids this year:
So Wrong (Desert Hearts): A lovely, romantic vid to one of my favorite lesbian films, set to one of my favorite country songs! Perfect ending.
Movin' Right Along (Wizard of Oz): This vidder had the clever idea to make a road trip vid for WOZ! It's set to a Muppets song, so peak childhood nostalgia on two fronts.
Twistin' the night away (Wizard of Oz): Obsessed with this concept! Love all the topsy-turvy-twisty clips they found — so fun to watch. And, of course, Sam Cooke!!
Beyond my gifts, I enjoyed so many vids this year. Trying to narrow down my list a bit (and limiting myself to one vid per fandom for now), here are 22 of my faves:
If You Tolerate This (Casablanca): This vid is uncompromising. Really appreciate the focus on politics over romance.
What I Did for Love (Pushing Daisies): Did not know what to expect with this song choice, but wow! It works so well for the terrible trade-offs Ned's gift has, while the vidder also captures everything I love about him and Chuck.
Dollhouse (Mad Men): Killer Sally and Betty vid. Perfect clip selection and a POV I've been dying to see vidded.
f a b u l o u s (Derry Girls): Both Derry Girls vids were a blast but I was so chuffed to see a Sister Michael vid. More eye rolls than any other vid has ever contained!
Tightrope (Blazing Saddles): Captures Bart in all his Bugs Bunny-esque glory. Obsessed with featured artist Gene Wilder.
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Some Like It Hot): Terrific cover for this! Just a blast from start to finish.
Hall of the Hot Ones (Hot Ones): Speaking of amazing song choices...this one just made me laugh like crazy. Vidder did an amazing job on the build up.
Things Are Gonna Get Easier (Abbott Elementary): I don't watch the show but I'm a sucker for sitcom vids and really loved both vids! This one hit me right where I live as a teacher.
Campaign Playlist (Dungeons & Dragons): Super clever concept, well-executed.
Plastic (Problemista): I was so hoping someone would make a vid about Julio Torres making weird little things, and they did! What a great song choice. The "Is there recycling?" sequence goes on so long and just gets funnier.
Unwritten (Stranger Than Fiction): I was surprised by how much I liked this movie, and this vid captures it so well! An oft-vidded song that I never get sick of but that also has rarely been deployed so literally and so well.
I'm a Man (Challengers): Loved all three Challengers vids and want 10000 more but I was especially thrilled that someone made a Tashi character study!
I Just Wanna... (Feel Good): Feels like it could be a (terrific!) promo for the show. Great, economical Mae Martin character study and I love the use of a song from a standup album.
Cross My Heart I Hope U Die (Severance): Again, I was really into all three Severance vids, but shouting this one out specifically for the very clever song editing. The whole vid keeps you off-kilter.
The Breaking Light (The Stand): A very moving vid all about a community coming together to face great hardship and evil. Everything I love about the source.
Don't Rain On My Parade (New Life Begins): I know nothing about this source, but all the food!! The energy!! The song clearly matches the chutzpah these women are displaying.
Body of Years (I Saw the TV Glow): Incredible editing. It's incredible to see someone do something so different with a source you've vidded before.
Pisonia Prologue (Invasion of the Body Snatchers umbrella): So cool that someone took Tessa up on this prompt! Love all the shots through windows and shadows. Such a creeping sense of paranoia throughout.
Remember I'm Alive (Wayne Family Adventures): Jason!! My boy! This is so emotional and does really great work with a static source.
The White Tent The Raft (Films from the National Board of Canada): Such a labor of love. It's 9 minutes long and worth it — reminds me how much I love the art form of animation.
Arnaq (Woman) (True Detective: North Country): The vidder's clip selection is so thoughtful as they find the moments of women in the background, women's hands at work, women coming together. Very cool.
Maps for the Getaway (Holiday): For some reason DW ate my first review of this which is fine because it was very tl;dr. The short version is I LOVE this, it feels like it was made for me, I cry every time, and "all we have is time" feels like the thesis of this movie.

St David’s Day
Tumblr media
Source: Welsh Saints from Welsh Churches by Martin Crampin/ Mae Ffydd Yn Cyrif website
Today is St David’s Day. The patron saint of Wales, David died on 1st March 589. He was founder and Abbot of Glyn Rhosyn monastery in Dyfed (now the town of St Davids). The construction of David’s monastic seat was not trouble free and his builders were assailed by a local pagan known as Boia who wanted to prevent the work going ahead. David, who was a great preacher and proselytiser, spoke to Boia and converted him to Christianity on the spot. Although Boia’s wife then sent her handmaidens naked to distract David’s labourers, such was the saint’s oratorical power, not a man wavered and the monastery was completed.
David’s fame spread when he began miraculously to make wells appear, but his patron sainthood really owes itself to his spirit appearing to King Cadwallon of Gwynedd on the eve of the Battle of Hatfield Moors in South Yorkshire against King Edwin of Northumbria. He advised the Britons to place leeks in their helmets, the better to distinguish themselves from their English foes in the heat of battle. This they did and triumphed on the field. Although this visitation confirmed David as the patron saint of Wales and the leek as its national vegetable, Cadwallon himself did not consider himself Welsh (an English term for “foreigner”): as far as he was concerned, he was leading a Celtic attempt to evict the invading Angles from northern Britain, and he nearly succeeded. Nonetheless, from the British victory at Hatfield, it became traditional for the Welsh to wear leeks on St David’s Day, although these days a discreet daffodil lapel pin is more likely to be seen.
In Lanark, an obscure, but possibly quite ancient, mock battle takes place at the local church, named Whuppity Stourie. Two sets of lads, representing New and Old Lanark, run three times sunwise round the church before engaging in combat, traditionally using their caps as weapons, at Wellgate Head. The fight now takes place with paper maces, after the two gangs had dangerously substituted their caps for stones. With its running around a sacred building followed by a pummelling contest, Whuppity Stourie may have a winter vs spring ritual origin, with the forces of winter darkness being beaten back, but ultimately it may merely have been a way of controlling youthful gang violence in the town.

⭐ PYGTWTSOG?
It took me a second to recognize the acronym lmao. Can't even recognize my own fic because I gave it such a stupidly long title 💀
It turns out that I’m not answering any of these with “sections” lololol. But! One of the things I had so much fun with while writing this was finding places to work in references - both to the actual books as well as to other media and memes! Some of them are pretty minor to the point that I’m not sure they really count as a “reference” exactly, but I certainly put them in there while thinking of a specific source!
With regard to the books themselves, I often used particular wording with the intention of it being from the books, even if it wasn’t at all in the context of how they were originally used. Off the top of my head, in the first chapter there’s things like “...trying to take advantage of the opportunity while I had your full attention” (“I died knowing you’d hate me for dying; but Nonagesimus, you hating me always meant more than anyone else in this hot and stupid universe loving me. At least I’d had your full attention.”) and “...absolutely unprepared to have this conversation and fundamentally unequipped to manage the implications it conveyed” (“She absolutely and fundamentally could not do this.”) etc.
I did try to keep a running log of references to other things as I was writing… I think I got all of them? Again, some of these are very minor (and some of them are direct shoutouts), but if anyone ever wants to play Reference Bingo, here’s your card:

Conversation
Bridget: I feel like I frequently have this exchange with my straight male associates where they're like... "Oh, you're a lesbian, that's awesome. That's cool. But in your relationship with your girlfriend, which one of you is the man in the relationship?"
Bridget: Like fair enough question, but I'm like we are genuinely both women, that's kinda the point. That is the essence of the arrangement we've made.
Bridget: "I know, but which one of you represents the man?"
Bridget: And it's like saying to a vegetarian, "Oh you're a vegetarian? That's the best. Which part of the salad represents the pork chop?"
Bridget: No, it's made of vegetables.
Bridget: Which vegetable wears a strap-on is really what they are asking. The answer is: All vegetables.
Bridget: Even the long-haired vegetables sometimes wear them. And when they do, it's very exciting for the short-haired vegetables.
