hi, i'm an editor and cast member from the show that SnapCube's Real-Time Fandub was inspired by, so I feel qualified to offer you some advice. the best thing you can do for your situation is to mentally be aware of three things:

it is your job to try and get the source material right. trust the source material. if you don't know the source material or it doesn't make sense with what your improv partner has just said, say anything and trust the source material.

this is a group project — it is not like your solitary creative exercise like drawing — and your job in the group is not to be funny, your job is to make your friends' jokes funnier. everything you say is a brick added to a tower and being funny is a consequence of that, not the end goal.

read the room and try to understand the tone of the scene. your understanding of the tone is one of the few things you have control over in the dub, so try to ride the tone with your cast members. and very importantly, if it would be funny, don't be afraid to break the tone.

let's take for instance one of my favorite moments from the show with Alfred (PaperBoxHouse) as Eggman and Shelby (Shelbeanie Cosplay) as Princess Elise.

the context here is that Princess Elise has evaded capture or otherwise escaped Dr. Eggman way too many times for him to handle. Alfred throws out some random big number to make it sound dramatic.

and to make it funnier, Shelby pulls out a "you know what's funnier than 24?" type bit to juxtapose Eggman's frustration since she assumes she'll be rescued by Sonic again, not long after this exchange.

the funny part also comes from trusting the source material here, because Eggman suddenly stops talking and we hang on to this shot of him being mad as hell for five seconds (neither Alfred nor Shelby have any idea this was in the cutscene at this point, the cast resists for a few seconds but then goes ballistic with laughter at this point)

followed by Eggman's immediate reaction in lockstep with the tone of the cutscene, but not its words.

so the joke makes sense only because Shelby and Alfred are having a conversation with each-other as their characters while trying to mimick the perceived tone of the cutscene, and Shelby decided to punch up their improv partner. this is coupled with the fact that they are relying on the cutscene's timing, since their control of that is very limited here. trusting the source material is important (which is also why Penny, the showrunner, is taking so long prepping the cutscenes for Kingdom Hearts at time of writing).

these are all based on the implicit rules of improv, as well as the explicit rules of Real-Time Fandub, as they were made back in 2016 when Real-Time Fandub was an improv livestream series playing around with Gravity Falls. feel free to take this and adapt to your own group:

I hope that this was helpful to you. analyzing these was helpful to me in my brief stunts on the original Real-Time Fandub, and the cast members many years my senior are running on these implicit ideas.

one thing I would also suggest that my friends often did is to have warm-ups! there's plenty of documented examples of warm-up dubs that both SnapCube's people and my people have done to get their cast into the mood of improv, as well as to flex their creative muscles before they get into dubbing something big like this. pick something short or low-effort and conducive to improvisation.

Ok so I just discovered all Snapcube's Sonic fandub and it's the best thing that happened to me lately. Like I rarely laughed that much in my life. All the crew has incredible improv skills and are stupidly funny. I've never played a Sonic game, have only watched a few Sonic related content, and it made everything even better.

I'm at a point when I see a real-time fandub I'm like: "Waiiit... I wanna do that too". So I'm looking up for nice pieces of media to dub on my own.

But here's an issue. I'm BAAAD at improvising. I guess it's like any other way to express creativity, like drawing. You gotta go fast grab a pen and start drawing. But I'm stuck in front the video I want to dub, because, unlike drawing, I can't go at my own pace, the video continues, and if I can't come up in time with something to say it's fucked up. It's also super hard to improv in english since it's not my native language. I cringe at what I made and get mentally stuck.

To you who have this kind of passion and went over the problem, do you have any advice, you did any exercice, what's your story about training your improv skills? I don't know where to start.
