Pantomime is a progressive metal trio from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Pantomime recently released their debut EP entitled “Desire Paths” on February 3rd. This 6 track EP really shows Pantomime’s potential. Each track is filled with crushing riffs, powerful choruses, and intricate drumming. All of this is brought together to create an EP that Pantomime should be more than proud of. Be sure to give Pantomime a visit when they stop through your town, because they put on a live show you don’t want to miss. I was blown away the first time I watched their live set. If you like bands such as Coheed and Cambria, Protest the Hero, and The Fall of Troy, you should waste no time going to stream “Desire Paths”. Check out my personal favorite track from the EP, “Into the Unknown” below where you can also stream and buy the full EP. NO MISTAKES IN SPACE
No Mistakes in Space is an indie/post-rock band that just released their new EP at the House of TARG. We caught up with bassist Mitch Harvey (MH) to discuss their influences, favourite songs to play live, and future plans to record a full-length at Wolf Lake Studios.

Latest Release: No Mistakes in Space (EP, Aug 2017)
Upcoming shows: Stay tuned!
SA: How did No Mistakes in Space come to be as a band? MH: We've been friends for most of our lives but were never all in one band at once. A couple years ago three of us were living together and we started making demos on Thursday nights for fun, it spiraled outwardly from there.
SA: What bands or musicians would you cite as the biggest influences on your sound? MH: It's tough to pinpoint but Radiohead, Warpaint, Lantlos, and Opeth probably cover most of the bases. Pink Floyd is a pretty big one too. We don't tend to talk about it consciously too much.
SA: Thus far in your career, what has been your biggest success? MH: Packaging our new record together and holding the finished object for the first time was a pretty special feeling.
SA: On the other hand, what is the biggest challenge you have faced, and how have you dealt with it? MH: We have an easygoing dynamic with each other and people have been very kind to us so the biggest challenge is probably just getting heard, the same as any band really. We just make songs that we love and try to put on the best show we can.
SA: How do you guys approach the song-writing process? MH: We can all play at least a bit of each instrument and we all like to write so when someone brings in a new idea we jam on it a lot. We'll improvise and follow the threads to see what grows out of it. Once the song shakes into a general shape we record a bunch of demos to try to get the structure right.
SA: What are your thoughts on the Ottawa music scene? MH: We've been involved in music here for around 10 years or so, which sounds crazy to say but it's probably the best it's ever been. There are lots of wonderful people making transcendentally beautiful music. I always make a point of going to see bands like The Heavy Medicine Band, The Haig, and Sparklesaurus, I love watching them play so much.
SA: Does the band have any favourite venues to play, and why? MH: We just played at Pressed, which we love, the sandwiches are amazing. House of Targ too of course, it's tough to beat the pinball/pierogi combo.
SA: You guys recently held your release show at House of Targ. Any particular moment stand out from the evening as your favourite, and what was your favourite song to play live (and why)? MH: Having our friends Sparklesaurus and The Haig both play was a dream, I kept forgetting that we had to play at the end of the night haha. I always love to play November live because of the big ending, Gardens is a pretty special one too.
SA: A question for fun: your three deserted island albums. What would they be and why? MH: Ouff, tough choice but for myself I'd pick Opeth - Still Life, Holy Sons - Fall of Man, and Ces Cru - Constant Energy Struggles for variety.
SA: Finally, what comes next for No Mistakes in Space moving into 2018 and beyond? Best of luck! MH: We're currently editing a music video and writing lots of new material for our first full-length. We'll head back to Wolf Lake Studios with Mike Bond to record that and hopefully keep playing lots of shows! Thanks!

Hi! I discovered you through your Blaze'd post and I listened to some of your songs on spotify! Could you share which songs are originals and which are covers? I'm not very knowledgeable about music so I would love to know. Thank you - as a fellow nonbinary queer person, I really appreciate your work!!!
Thank you so much for the kind words and support 😁💖
Most of the songs are originals (the whole first EP and Manic Pixie Dream Boy, On the Downlow, Apocalypse Girls, Godx, Love Dies and Noella).
Drunkest Girl at the Party is a cover of my friend Emma Oh who I think is an incredible artist who deserves recognition. She hasn't released her version yet.
Can't Help Thinking About Me is David Bowie's first single and I thought it would be fun to do. It's a great 60s rock song that I interpret as being a narrator realizing they're either gay or trans and leaving for the big city after their hometown all find out.
And Flower Boy itself is a cover of another close songwriter friend named Fliss, a great local band called Sparklesaurus released it but they broke up.
If you're interested in her more recent stuff, I actually produced her first solo single and played electric guitar/piano/wrote the violin parts. It's a really heartbreaking and underrated little country song about dealing with homophobic family. She plays in Ada Lea too who are also pretty cool.
I have an album of originals and an album of covers coming next year, I hope you'll stick around!
All the best 💖

SPARKLESAURUS
This week we are excited to present an interview with new Ottawa band Sparklesaurus (SP). Pictured above, from l-r, the band consists of Colleen Jones, Shamisa Schroeder, Brad Lapensee, and Felicity DeCarle. Read more to learn about their lyrical inspirations, their thoughts on Ottawa, and future investments for the band!

Latest release: Perennials (EP, July 2016)
Upcoming shows: Sunday, October 16 - Shipley Hollows, Sparklesaurus. Pressed. 8pm. $10. Saturday, October 29 - Sparklesaurus, The Dirty Milkdrinkers, & Fuzz Monkey Reunion. Kerry’s Place, Pembroke. 8pm. $5.
SA: How did Sparklesaurus start as a band? SP: Felicity and Shamisa were in a band called ‘Fliss’ and played together in small ensembles in high school. They met Colleen at a music festival called Sabstock in their first year of university (2011). She joined ‘Fliss’ for a few months before they disbanded as university got too busy. Sparklesaurus was born in January 2016 and Brad came into the picture in February. Everything just came together, it was totally meant to be.
SA: Who are your biggest influences, musically or otherwise? SP: Our influences are always changing as we evolve as people and go through different phases and periods in our lives. We all have pretty different musical styles/tastes/influences, which is cool because you can definitely hear all of that coming out in our music. But if we each had to pick one artist/group that is our biggest influence (musically or otherwise)… Felicity – Grimes Brad – The Grateful Dead Shamisa – The Beatles Colleen – David Bowie
SA: Thus far in your career, what has been your biggest success? SP: Our biggest success has come from gigging a lot. We have met a ton of really cool people. For example, we met our friend Charlie at Zaphod’s when he came to our first show there, and him and our other friend Megan that we met through him produced our EP! Which was also a success! We’re very open to the opportunities we’re presented with and believe everyone and every experience has something to offer. Personally, I think openness is a prerequisite for success – whatever success means to you.
SA: On the other hand, what is the biggest challenge you have faced, and how have you dealt with it? SP: One challenge we have faced is how to balance the band with having full-time jobs, while also getting enough sleep.
SA: How do you approach the song-writing process? SP: So far all the songs are written by Felicity – she will bring the bare bones to band practice and teach them to everyone, and then we each come up with our own parts and give the song a little piece of our own pizazz.
SA: What are your thoughts on the Ottawa music scene? SP: Most people are super supportive and encouraging. We’ve had good attendance at most of our shows in Ottawa. It’s small but tight-knit, so it’s a lot like a little community. Everyone knows everyone and we help each other out. A lot of the time you are playing to an audience of musicians.
SA: What is your favourite track off of Perennials and why? SP: I really like how Flower Boy turned out. The keyboard melody was a spontaneous creation during recording and I really like what it adds to the song. It ties it up in a neat little bow.
SA: The lyrics of the opening track of the EP, The Royal We, repeat "The Royal We determines the weather", which really stuck with me. Can you unpack that a bit, and maybe give us a bit of the meaning behind the lyrics in that particular song? SP: The song is about how we are all the same – one human species, all equals. The phrase ‘the royal we determines the weather’ uses a silly, pompous pronoun to poke fun at systems of power where one individual has a monopoly of power. But no one ever has complete control – there are forces at work that are beyond us, such as the weather. It is important to remember our humanity that we are all the same despite hierarchical structures and corrupt kings (presidents/prime ministers). We all came from the same place, and we’ll all end up the same in the end. ‘We rain and we storm’ is also a play on words - we “the people” are like the weather and ultimately cannot be controlled. ‘Storm’ refers to an actual storm but also to storming the kingdom – taking back our power and agency from those who have robbed us of it.
SA: If you could tour with any band or musician that is currently active, who would it be and why? SP: And the Kids! We’re borderline obsessed with them and they are the coolest people ever. They are amazing live – so talented, tight, hardworking, badass (go watch their Tiny Desk concert on YouTube!). Honestly, anytime a song of theirs comes on I get a huge smile on my face (ask Colleen). It makes me so happy for some reason. I also think we would have tons of fun together on tour.
SA: Lastly, what’s in store for Sparklesaurus moving forward in 2016? SP: Our next plan is to buy a van! We want to make some money off of CDs and merch to put towards a band vehicle. And then we will plan a small tour - probably around Ontario/Quebec, or maybe even head out East. We are going to be applying to a bunch of festivals for next summer, so stay tuned! A second EP or even a full-length album is also something we will be working towards – but that might not be for a little while since Perennials is still pretty fresh (it was just released on July 15th).
