Latest Release: No Mistakes in Space (EP, Aug 2017)
Upcoming shows: Stay tuned!
SA: How did No Mistakes in Space come to be as a band? MH: We've been friends for most of our lives but were never all in one band at once. A couple years ago three of us were living together and we started making demos on Thursday nights for fun, it spiraled outwardly from there.
SA: What bands or musicians would you cite as the biggest influences on your sound? MH: It's tough to pinpoint but Radiohead, Warpaint, Lantlos, and Opeth probably cover most of the bases. Pink Floyd is a pretty big one too. We don't tend to talk about it consciously too much.
SA: Thus far in your career, what has been your biggest success? MH: Packaging our new record together and holding the finished object for the first time was a pretty special feeling.
SA: On the other hand, what is the biggest challenge you have faced, and how have you dealt with it? MH: We have an easygoing dynamic with each other and people have been very kind to us so the biggest challenge is probably just getting heard, the same as any band really. We just make songs that we love and try to put on the best show we can.
SA: How do you guys approach the song-writing process? MH: We can all play at least a bit of each instrument and we all like to write so when someone brings in a new idea we jam on it a lot. We'll improvise and follow the threads to see what grows out of it. Once the song shakes into a general shape we record a bunch of demos to try to get the structure right.
SA: What are your thoughts on the Ottawa music scene? MH: We've been involved in music here for around 10 years or so, which sounds crazy to say but it's probably the best it's ever been. There are lots of wonderful people making transcendentally beautiful music. I always make a point of going to see bands like The Heavy Medicine Band, The Haig, and Sparklesaurus, I love watching them play so much.
SA: Does the band have any favourite venues to play, and why? MH: We just played at Pressed, which we love, the sandwiches are amazing. House of Targ too of course, it's tough to beat the pinball/pierogi combo.
SA: You guys recently held your release show at House of Targ. Any particular moment stand out from the evening as your favourite, and what was your favourite song to play live (and why)? MH: Having our friends Sparklesaurus and The Haig both play was a dream, I kept forgetting that we had to play at the end of the night haha. I always love to play November live because of the big ending, Gardens is a pretty special one too.
SA: A question for fun: your three deserted island albums. What would they be and why? MH: Ouff, tough choice but for myself I'd pick Opeth - Still Life, Holy Sons - Fall of Man, and Ces Cru - Constant Energy Struggles for variety.
SA: Finally, what comes next for No Mistakes in Space moving into 2018 and beyond? Best of luck! MH: We're currently editing a music video and writing lots of new material for our first full-length. We'll head back to Wolf Lake Studios with Mike Bond to record that and hopefully keep playing lots of shows! Thanks!
