One of my favorite tropes in SVSSS fics is Shen Yuan's inability to understand that not everyone finds Luo Binghe hot. Like Luo Binghe will commit atrocities and after Shen Yuan is like 'i don't understand why everyone isn't falling at his feet. He committed war crimes? Yeah, and he looked good doing it so where's the problem?'

I like to think that he thinks everyone who dislikes Luo Binghe are actually evil. They could be doing good things, but the moment they side-eye Luo Binghe, Shen Yuan is on to them. Clearly they are bad and they are faking being good!

On the other hand, he is convinced that everyone he likes secretly also like Luo Binghe, even if they tell Shen Yuan otherwise. Liu Qingge for example would tell him how much he hates Luo Binghe, but Shen Yuan is like 'Aw, Liu Qingge is so shy. If I didn't know better, I would think he's telling the truth, but from experience, his actions speak louder than words, and what does he do every time he sees Binghe? He fights him! Because he knows about demon culture and is trying to make Binghe feel at home!'

Basically I love Shen Yuan being as obsessed about Luo Binghe as Luo Binghe is about him

mmmm musical cultivator shen yuan again. Feng Xuanlu, the Wind Song. He has this well-loved wooden pipe he inherited from is adoptive father that he uses on occasion. When the traveling day gets slow and he doesn't feel like singing, when he's stressed, when night falls and he's sitting around a fire with his troupe and they've all had a little bit to drink.

His hair is long and black, always tied up into a ponytail or a braid of some sort. When he's in camp he loosens it up until its splayed messily over his shoulder. He has crows feet around his eyes that scrunch up when he smiles. His eyes are bamboo green and his hands are rough and callused from years of plucking strings and work. He has scars on his back that he won't explain the origins of.

His voice is low and warm like a fire, it gets raspy in the mornings or when he's been humming or singing for too long. He speaks like there's sunshine dripping off his tongue. He speaks soft, he speaks and his voice takes up the entire room. He's spent over a decade hearing his praises getting sung and he still gets shy over it sometimes.

Whenever he goes into town he has to have at least three other musicians with him at all times -- not his decision of course, but the unanimous choice of his companions. Shen Yuan gathers admirers everywhere he goes, and his companions have long since learned that their dear friend and leader is completely unaware of it. So they have to beat off these suitors with sticks.

We could make Sqq a transformer in his past life. Like optimus prime sorta transformer. Cybertronian.

He'd be the only surviving seeker (winged guy) on the autobots side (I don't know all the canons but I don't think they have, like, any). Pretty young when the war started - unfathomably ancient for humans, the kiddie of the group to them.

And he arrives on earth. Discovers the Internet. Immediately gets hooked on critiquing stupid Web novels in every language, which being a sentient machine he can do at great speed without forgetting anything. Decides to read the final chapter during a battle because he's so close to the end and airplane had better pull SOMETHING good. Is so infuriated (distracted) by the ending he messes up and immediately gets killed by some low level decepticon. After FIVE MILLION years of war he gets offed by some loser over a stupid human story that wasn't even very good. He dies SO furious.

And then he gets reborn a human.

He is, as the kids say, big mad.

Street kid Luo Binghe makes the mistake of letting some weirdo get a hold of him and finds himself locked up in a windowless room somewhere.

The only bright spot in this shit situation is that there's another boy in there with him. Shen Yuan is clearly in considerably worse shape than Luo Binghe and he says he's been here for a very long time. But he's so kind to Binghe and deliberately draws their captor's attention to himself (and away from Binghe) whenever he can.

He also, after Binghe's been there about a month, steals their captor's keys, unlocks the restraints they're both in, and then shoves Binghe out the boarded up window he's been prying open when he had time.

Shen Yuan is too big to fit through the window, he says. They both know that's not true but they can also both hear that their captor is coming-he must have noticed the keys were missing- and Shen Yuan intends to stall him while Binghe gets away.

Binghe promises to come back with help and SY just smiles and nods and shoos him away.

He runs as fast as he can, and once he's far enough away from the house he escaped from he starts asking for help- but no one is listening to him. And he knows if he goes to the local guard he'll probably be handed back over as a runaway slave... And then he sees two men who both seen almost to shine in the dirty city streets... they must be cultivators, they must. If anyone can help him now it will be them. So Luo Binghe throws himself at the taller of the two men and starts begging for help.

Shen Qingqiu is absolutely positive this kid is trying to lure them into an ambush, but Yue Qingyuan- who invited himself along on SQQ's mission without asking him- doesn't think so.

YQY goes with LBH, and SQQ follows, complaining that this is a trick the whole way- up until they discover that yes actually the local nobleman does have a secret room he's been imprisoning children in and there is indeed an almost beaten to death SY in there.

YQY sends SQQ off with SY- gotta get that kid medical attention ASAP- while he and LBH stay behind to Politely Ask Some Questions.

When YQY and LBH arrive back at the sect SY is still in the medical ward but isn't dying and is even awake! LBH is relieved and refuses to leave him again.

YQY fills SQQ in that not only were both boys not slaves, SY was actually the son of the nobleman's first wife she had as the result of an affair. He disappeared from the household around the time the first wife died and all the servants assumed their Lord had sold the boy or killed him outright.

But now that the nobleman has died a sudden and painful and extremely mysterious death it looks like SY has inherited the estate. YQY will have someone from An Ding go sort out the details since SY can't.

SQQ watches YQY smile at the little urchins they've rescued and talk in a way that obviously means he intends them to stay and says, internally 'Fuck no Qi-ge you don't get to replace me with a Shen you actually did manage to save. Absolutely not!'

Out loud the conversation goes:

SQQ: I want the older boy.

YQY: What?

SQQ: You intend for them to stay right? I want the older boy for Qing Jing Peak, you can keep the little one if you want.

YQY, pleased and assuming SQQ and SY must have bonded while he and LBH were away: Of course.

SQQ and SY have not bonded, and once they get back to QJ Peak things are tense. SQQ is low-key kinda jealous of SY and also reminded much too much of himself by the boy. Except he was never as naive and stupid as this kid is! Why is he so nice? How?? And the little shit isn't even afraid of him!

SY, deeply sarcastic: Oh nooo. I'm going to be beaten? Such a thing has never happened to me before! *Coughs because his throat is permanently messed up from being nearly strangled to death*

SQQ, aware that if he hits the kid now he loses: You're not allowed in the library for a week.

SY: What!

SQQ: The next words out of your mouth better be "yes Shizun, sorry Shizun" or it'll be two weeks.

SY: ...yes Shizun, sorry Shizun.

Meanwhile LBH and YQY are having a magical adventure in becoming a found family and are bonding over their obsessions with their respective Shens. They absolutely come visit QJ Peak at least twice a week much to SQQ's displeasure and SY's delight.

do you know how many things SY!SQQ had to do to WIN Binghe over????? let me make you a list of the many times SY!SQQ was kind and the effect it had on Binghe:

--Giving Binghe medicine to treat his wounds (that didn't win Binghe's heart, it make him wary of this new development)

--Making Binghe ride with him on the carriage AND smiling at him (that didn't win Binghe's heart, but it made him go doki doki)

--When the OOC lock unfroze, promising that he would protect BInghe from the on (that didn't win Binghe's heart, but it did soften him and made him believe in SQQ, since the words were backed by his actions against the Skinner demon in order to save LBH and NYY)

--Giving Binghe a new cultivation manual ((that didn't win Binghe's heart, but "SHIZUN GAVE THIS TO ME!" For someone who doesn't have anything, being gifted something so precious was really meaningful)

--At the demon invasion, VERBALLY and OPENLY stating that he was 1000% sure Binghe would win. (that didn't win Binghe's heart-- no no, wait, this is it. This is truly the start of it all, because SQQ BELIEVED IN HIM. Listen. Listen. That level of blind faith was something that REWIRED Binghe's brain. He had NO ONE to believe in him until then!)

--When SQQ got poisoned by Without a Cure to protect Binghe, at the cost of his own life (BANG!!!!!! HERE WE GO!! The beginning of the congee making saga!! )

--Protecting Binghe FROM HIMSELF in the dream realm

--Treating him as the specialest boy in the world for almost 3 years

it's VERY IMPORTANT to understand that what won Binghe's love was Shen Qingqiu's UNCONDITIONAL LOVE: the willingness to put himself in harm's way to protect Binghe, give Binghe what he needs (a proper place to sleep, attention, encouragement, lessons, access to knowledge, etc), caring for Binghe in any way necessary, taking REVENGE on Binghe's name to punish his bullies; and the decisiveness with which he did all that, the fact that Shen Qingqiu never ever truly regrets sacrificing himself for and loving Binghe.

and with all that in one side, Binghe decided to RECIPROCATE. because that's just how he loves, and what he felt SQQ's love for him deserved in turn.

now, after everything i've said, do you actually think that someone like Shen Jiu would EVER qualify for the esteemed position of "Binghe's loved one"?

pd: well, the sexual attraction does mean he actually went "pretty immortal 😳" at some point, but it's not like that would be enough for binghe lol the unconditional love made the attraction stronger. if the novel hadn't gone that route, sqq would have been just binghe's sexual awakening

imagine, shen qingqiu is found out to be a 'body stealer' and a special peak lord meeting is called to deal with the news. yqy explains the situation and very desperately wants shen yuan banished from the sect(he's not thinking straight and is also one thought away from yeeting xuan su off the mountain) liu qingge is wrestling between his inner sense of justice and feelings for sqq(because he was told that sy couldn't tell them he replaced shen jiu so is it really a betrayal etc etc) so while every other peak lord processes this information, shang qinghua pulls out a detailed chart on how exactly cang qiong sect will function without its an ding peak lord. it will be exactly like when he defected to mbj except this time he won't come back. so cang qiong sect can go to ruin<3

it doesn't matter if the peak lords were considering letting him stay or not! shang qinghua is now explaining how the demon realm has much better working conditions and pay than his current job, and yes, he does have to stand by whatever soul is in sqq's body. poor yqy, hit with the double whammy of losing both the love of his life and his secretary :( (bonus points if sqh's bullshitted explanation accidentally implies that cumplane are soulmates)

AU where after a qi deviation, SY ended up in SQQ with SJ still in there. It's a body sharing au :3

Of course SJ is royally pissed and tries to get SY out, it doesn't work. He even tries to tell people but the system pulls out a gun and tells him to behave. So he's stuck with SY.

They switch out every once in a while (SJ uses SY to avoid interacting with people he doesn't like). SJ grows to be fine with the arrangement and maybe even grows used to SY. It's even better because SY is an "arrow ace?" which apparently means he feels little to no attraction, so he's not even weird about the Warm Red Pavilion jiejies.

SJ, dare he even say, starts to like SY.

That comes crashing down on one PL meeting where SY didn't sleep through it. SQQ was in his corner being demure and mysterious (and bitchy) as ever. Then YQY comes in a little late because SQH needed help with something.

YQY walks past, and SJ feels SY perk up. SJ is too confused and curious to really listen to the meeting. SJ can feel SY subtly looking through their peripheral vision to look at his Qi-ge. SJ thinks it has something to do with that book they're all apparently a part of.

Then SY says "that's your gege?" SJ internally tells him "yes, but we're not on speaking terms." SY is quiet for a moment before he says "you didn't mention he was fine as hell" (qijiu are platonic in this au fyi SJ is just a bratty didi)

Now, SJ doesn't know what that whole sentence meant, but he absolutely didn't like SY's tone. SJ demands to know what he's talking about. SY repeats that he thinks YQY is really hot.

SJ almost breaks his fan as he mentally yells "KILL YOURSELF" at SY for the comment. SY (who meant the comment in a purely aesthetic and a "asexual people make a lot of dirty jokes" sort of way) smells blood in the water. He immediately starts annoying SJ about to, asking wildly inappropriate things until SJ gets up and storms out mid budget breakdown.

Everyone has been thinking that SQQ went a little wacko after the qi deviation, so they thought SQQ was just dealing with an episode of madness. LQG offers to check on him (he likes SY already), MQF smells disaster with that pairing, so he offers to go himself (especially since he's yk A DOCTOR. plus he likes SJ enough to deal with his insanity)

MQF goes to QJP and knocks on the door and gets no answer. He enters because he's worried SQQ is sick or something, but he instead finds SJ arguing with his reflection. He peeks over his shoulder, and shockingly, finds another person reflected instead of his Shen-shixiong.

He watches for a while to try to diagnose the problem, but then SJ whipped his head around with a panicked look (the system gave a notification about they being caught). SJ is slightly relieved it's MQF because he knows this man could help with this.

MQF asks him what's going on because he can help. SJ starts trying to explain, avoiding any topic the system tries to flag. Eventually MQF understands that

SJ has some sort of spirit in his body

There's something preventing him from sharing information

SJ doesn't particularly mind the spirit

He does mind the thing blocking him from giving him information

The only reason he minds now is because the spirit is making inappropriate comments about their sect leader

The spirit is currently laughing at SJ

MQF is confused but too intrigued to simply leave, so he agrees to help SJ move the spirit (somewhere in SQQ's mind SY gets a notification that congratulates him for starting a matchmaking route).

Anyway then like fifteen million pages of mujiu slow burn with SY groaning in the back of SQQ's mind. And then even more pages of SY realizing his attraction towards YQY isn't purely a teehee moment and promptly freaking out. Probably a system reveal that fucks up our progress then some deus ex machina ass artifact (when in doubt, blame Airplane) fixes it by giving them separate bodies or whatever.

cang qiong dragon god shen yuan is probably like so old that time doesn’t have meaning? like he transmigrated into pidw as a dragon and and the system gave him a few missions that functionally amounted to ‘claim this mountain range as your territory and defend it from demons’

sy didn’t realize that he was actually laying the foundation for cang qiong mountain sect before its creation. some terrifying demon demigod (one of the first heavenly demons, maybe?) pursues a band of cultivators to his mountain range, and he protects them. they settle his mountains and start cultivating, and because they’re protected by a literal god (who they call lord canglong, and they name the mountains after him) people want to study there.

so cqms is born, and sy takes a nap. when he wakes up, those cultivators he saved bring another group of cultivators, all named 'wen' to his mountain, and they ask his permission to lead the peaks next. another nap, and he wakes up to the wen generation asking his blessing for the ming generation, so on and so forth up until the qing generation. this time he recognizes names: qingge, qingfang, qingqi. this generation's leader, qingyuan. and the one whose bow is shallow and perfunctory, qingqiu. ofc sy isn't super pressed about standing on ceremony or whatever—he's only experienced like six years in this world, and most of them were spent either establishing the mountain as his territory or helping his little cultivators fight off some world-ending cataclysm or other. but he remembers the scum villain’s name, and he’s not a huge fan of the way sqq’s already proving himself to be an arrogant old shit

just like every other time, after he’s met and blessed this generation of peak lords, shen yuan falls asleep. shit!!! he meant to stay awake this time, but the system putting him to sleep is just too powerful! he’s probably missed luo binghe, damnit!!! what’s the point of transmigrating into this shitty novel if he doesn’t even get to meet the only character worth the pixels it took to type him into existence??

but as soon as he sees that fluffy-haired boy curled up in one of his caves, bruised and weeping and wondering what he’s done to be so universally hated, shen yuan knows. that’s his protagonist, and he’s really too pathetic like this. he’s really just a child. and shen yuan might have been easily annoyed by the concept of kids in his first life, but this isn’t just some whiny kid. this is the protagonist. so he does his best to calm tiny lord luo down.

and at first when lbh realizes it’s the fucking dragon god canglong speaking to him, the poor kid falls on his face kowtowing and apologizing for the intrusion, but lord canglong just…asks him what’s wrong. and then listens. and then he allows binghe to…to touch his hand???? not only that, he pats binghe’s head?? and tells him it isn’t his fault??? that one little head-pat is filled with so much spiritual power that binghe almost passes out, and soon after he recovers, lord canglong sends him back down the mountain with a renewed sense of purpose. lord canglong said binghe wasn’t stupid, wasn’t incompetent, wasn’t a failure, and binghe was determined to prove himself worthy of the sect’s guardian deity’s kindness.

and when luo binghe turns to walk down the mountain back to qing jing peak, that google translate voice pipes up in shen yuan’s ear with an update he hadn’t realized he was waiting for.

[Congratulations! Congratulations! Congratulations! Important things must be said three times! USER_002 has completed the quest {From the Ground Up}! B-points +500 USER_002 has initiated the quest {Master of Masters}! New skill [Shapeshifter] has been unlocked! Would USER_002 like to activate [Shapeshifter] now?]

shen yuan slammed the bright glowing [YES] faster than any quest the system had ever given him. that’s how he learned that he was, in fact, just naked in front of luo binghe, and the [Shapeshifter] skill didn’t come with an auto-clothed setting. thank fuck he’d already sent the protagonist away!

SVSSS AU where SY transmigrates while SJ is with Wu Yanzi after a qi deviation SJ has.

Wu Yanzi sees Shen Jiu after deviation is like 'welp no longer useful... i'm gonna trade him to demons for some useful artifacts' and Shen Yuan ends up in demon realm, and he is like 'Yes! You know what this is good away from death flags and look at all these awesome creatures'

The demons are just staring at this little cultivator who knows WAY to much, about beasts within the abyss, ancient artifacts that they thought lost forever about all different types off demons/creatures just far to much.

Collectively decide he's either a god or a seer or something... and maybe they should do something about it but... he's just...nice. To nice and also they don't want to end up accidentally killing a god and getting wrath of heavens turned on them.

So Shen Jiu is just freely roaming around demon realm and ends up bonding and picking up collection of little demons because 'Why are you dropping these poor kids in the middle of wilderness poor little buns'. He has baby Mobei Jun and Baby Sha Hualing following him around like ducklings and he totally uses knowledge of artifacts and plants ect to make sure the two are safe.

They have both has Shen Yuan for 5 minutes and if anything hurts their new big brother/father they will kill everyone here and then themselves.

When Tanlang jun is sealed away, Shen Jiu sees all the chaos and somehow ends up de-facto leader, especially cause he's like 'No Tailang Jun has an heir he'll show up eventually and you'll all be fucked so calm the down and play nice. He's just keeping things together easier for when Luo Binghe shows up cause he's protagonist sop surely he'll come for his birthright and hopefully because no SQQ there he'll have a happier childhood and hopefully a happier ending.

Things process with Luo Binghe ending up as head disciple of Bai Zhan.

Eventually there are rumors of a demon king who is not actually a demon and the peak are investigating when Sha Hualing does her invasion because 'Stay the fuck away from our Shen Yuan you cultivators' there's a huge fight and Shen Yuan ends up showing up with Mobei Jun (he told on her and teleported them there)

Everyone is shocked at this cultivator being in charge of them all and all the demons listening to him. And the wifebeam is in full effect.

Yue Qingyuan shows up and 'Xiao-Jiu??'he is awestruck his Xiao-Jiu is actually alive he's thought he was dead for years.

Liu Qingge is shocked at being saved by this random cultivator who is colluding with demons, but he whose him a debt as he saved him.

Luo Binghe is so confused this cultivator showed up saved him and knew his name. Called him Binghe and smiled at him. He has so many questions.

Mobei Jun and Sha Hualing are not happy at all. Well mostly Sha Hualing as Mobei Jun is distracted smitten with some random peak lord.

(Shang Qinghua has no idea what happened to his story Mobei Jun never showed up, no SQQ, where is his plot? his system is confused Shang Qinghua is confused...and for some reason he feels the urge to blame peerless cucumber)

Luo Binghe showing up in demon realm and like, demon emperor ok...does...does Shen Yuan come as empress?he's basically already running it that's part of deal right? and then has the entire demon realm giving him shovel talk because they all adore Shen Yuan.

Shen Yuan wakes up and is told he's been transmigrated into Proud Immortal Demon Way. He has no idea what in the hell that is.

SY isn’t ignorant! He loves to read! But usually his standard fair involves mystery and is more grounded in reality. The only stuff he knows about the Cultivation Genre is what little his sister has shown him and some general cultural stuff.

A System appears to tell him that he has been given a powerful new body and his duty is to save the protagonist from his horrible suffering backstory... Then the System fucks off. He is given exactly one Systen-issued power: the suffering meter. With this, he can look over people's heads and see how "blackened" they are. The closer to 100% the worse off they are- and the more likely to do bad things!

SY has been given the body of a Demon Lord; he's part Death's Pure Butterfly and is as pretty as he is deadly. He has some vague memories and senses from his Original Goods. The guy was feared for his skills as an assassin and was quite crafty with poison, on top of being able to control all sorts of insects from the common grasshopper to huge demonic wasps. He was sent out here to kill... some... cultivator guy? A Peak Lord? What was that?

(The Original Goods was supposed to take Luo Binghe hostage during a mission early into his disciple stay. The Original Goods thought that Shen Quinqiu would surely take the bait to protect one of his students, which would allow him to kill the Peak Lord... instead, it was one of the first chips in LBH's mind that his Shizun maybe didn't care about him. The Demon Lord was killed and LBH only survived the powerful poison thanks to his hidden Heavenly Demon bloodline.)

After getting his bearings he spies his target: a very pretty man with a gaggle of kids, all looking to be in the "preteen/early teenager" stage. Most of them seem to just be fucking around while the smallest kid is being forced to dig up some roots with his hands. The man is sitting in the middle with his eyes closed and a fan out, ignoring them all. SY uses his Meter ability and... woah...

(This SY, not understanding genre conventions, does not seem to understand that the Tragic Backstory has already happened to SQQ. Which is why his Blackening is so high.)

SY ends up being clever and using his insect controlling powers and a less potent poison to knock out the kids and the guy. Feeling bad for leaving the kids out here, he finds an emergency talisman on the man and uses it before flat out just kidnapping him.

SY ends up taking him all the way back to his palace in the demon realm. He's the last of his bloodline and his people are really loyal to him, so this should be the safest place to be! When he gets back and orders some of his staff to help him make SQQ comfortable they're all very confused but go along with it. One of the staff has the foresight to put a Spirit Dampening Bracelet on SQQ. It doesn't seal his Cultivation like binding cables but it does weaken it to be near useless and has the bonus of being a tracking device.

When SQQ wakes up he is very confused and even more mad. He's been laid in a huge bed and is basically being treated like a princess. After bullying one of the guards outside of his room he realizes where he is and who did it. He very quickly realizes a few things. The most pressing, however, is that he has very clearly been Bridenapped. If he can't escape (or be rescued, but he doesn't hold his breath for that) from here within the next 90 days, the Demon Lord that captured him will marry him...

Cue a very confused SY trying to give this very angry and combative man things to heal his damaged Cultivation, make him happy, and just generally being nice to him to try and bring that Meter down. Meanwhile, SQQ thinks they're playing some 5d chess mindgame and he REFUSES to lose.

(The System finds this all very unconventional, but it does look at LBH who seems to be having a much better time and shrugs this off. YQY is frantic and tearing himself apart trying to find ANY clue on where Xiao Jiu is. SQH is really confused since he knows he didn't write any of this. MBJ is wondering if he should Bridenap his own Peak Lord; he is the only one who actually knows where SQQ is because of the trade agreements with SY...)
