Countdown to Culmets Week 2019: mod’s favorite scenes - #8

There’s a quote in Patrick Rothfuss’s The Wise Man’s Fear—the title-giving quote, actually—that I have been thinking about on and off during the years, but most recently when (re-)watching Star Trek: Discovery’s “Despite Yourself” (1x01). It runs: “There are three thingsall wisemen fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” When Hugh confronts Lorca after he announces that he will remove Paul from Hugh’s care, this “anger of a gentle man” is exactly what we see.

And it is in this moment that Lorca, as well as the audience, realize that, yes, Lorca should be afraid of him. There’s an edge of steel to Hugh that emerges for the first time in this episode and marks him as someone who has reached his limit when it comes to letting Lorca get away with his un-Starfleet-like decisions. It makes clear how important protecting his partner is to him. A trait he shares with Paul and that we already see glimpses of after Paul’s first jump in “Choose Your Pain” (1x05).

This scene is precisely one of those quieter character moments that Star Trek: Discovery excels at and that have sparked many, many fanfic and fanart ideas. And to be honest, all through the break, I kept thinking that we would see Hugh be centrally involved in a mutiny against Lorca in the second half of season 1. And I still mourn that we never got that. But even with what we did get, it becomes clear that Hugh might be a career Starfleet officer, but he is certainly not a pushover or someone who would forget his moral principles or stop protecting the person he loves in the face of authority.
