Entropic Float 2 Demo and Kickstarter Launch!

Picture a point-and-click adventure game. Now picture a branching, time-looping ontological mystery visual novel. Entropic Float 2 combines those into its gameplay concept: A point-and-click where you can never solve every puzzle at once. Where you have one key that fits two locks... And the only way to see what's behind the lock you didn't choose is to die, repeat the day, and try something different this time. With only you and your protagonist aware of the loop, seek an answer that earns new information. Through trial and error, solutions and murder... Can you find the way through this new Anomaly?
In early 2021, I started working on a project just for fun. Using the character creator and scene assembly tools of Illusion's Koikatsu, paired with the visual novel engine ren'py, I decided to learn to make a VN. A year and a half, over three hundred thousand words, and quite a bit of pocket money later, I released 'Entropic Float: This World Will Decay And Disappear' for free on steam and itch.io. 
Something that was never meant to be more than a fun exploration of a concept grew into a huge endeavor for me, a visual novel as long as any two Umineko episodes combined! I got guest artists, made plenty of art myself, and learned a lot more about coding in ren'py than I ever thought I would. After releasing the game, my friends were proud of me, and I've heard from a lot of people it connected with. It became the basis of what I want to keep doing creatively- Expanding on this world, telling its story, and finding those people it will resonate with.
That brings us to Entropic Float 2: Land Of The Witch. A sequel I've been planning since the first game released a little over a year ago now. It's a game that can't be free (though if you, for any reason, cannot purchase it- I care more about sharing it than I do about making money) and a game I want to create to that standard. There won't be assets made in a character creator or royalty free music this time. I hope to bring the Pine Creek Anomaly to the screen with my own two hands, and a little bit of help from freelancers. I want to make a point-and-click adventure worth paying fifteen dollars for, an artistic experience that constitutes a huge step up from the first game.

A demo is available to download and play from itch.io! Features already reflected in the demo include:
The general structure of the point-and-click gameplay; including travel between maps, item collection and use, and conversations with other characters.
Hand-drawn backgrounds (with minor animations) and talksprites.
Profile screens for each character and a memory-seeking system improved from the first game. Also improved from the first game is exposition being mainly in a linear-locked part of the story so it doesn't need to be repeated in different places so different players don't get confused!

Planned features yet to be implemented include:
Loop Randomization- The demo includes only the very first loop of the story, but in the actual timelooping gameplay, many factors will be randomized between loops. Characters and items will appear and disappear, characters will have different trustworthiness scores, and eventually, the weather will even change and impact puzzles and character behaviors.
Zones- Minigame areas that abstractly inform you more about a character and are locked behind obtaining certain profile notes and memories. The rewards for completing zones will be tools to access additional areas, such as Area 2 waiting beyond the broken bridge.
Characters- Several of EF2's characters don't appear yet in the demo, due to having their introductions tied to maps that aren't accessible in Area 1.
General Improvements- Characters currently only have one talksprite. The preferences page is still in the ren'py default configuration. Some music tracks recycled from the first game aren't the best fit for the situation. These are all things that relate to the current version being a demo. These are all things that will improve sooner if this kickstarter is a success.

OVERVIEW OF MEDICAL GAS MANIFOLDS
What is a Medical Gas Manifold? Unlike Medical Air Compressors and Vacuum Pumps that generate gas on-site, many gases used in healthcare settings are delivered to the facility in different types of containers and use manifolds to distribute into the rooms. Gases that can be delivered:
Oxygen – delivery pressure of 50psi Nitrous Oxide – delivery pressure of 50psi Medical Air – delivery pressure of 50psi Carbon Dioxide – delivery pressure of 50-100psi HeliOX blends – delivery pressure of 50psi Nitrogen – delivery pressure of 180psi Instrument Air – delivery pressure of 180psi The 2021 edition of the NFPA99 has the most recent developments in medical equipment and processes as well as new methods to reduce fire, explosion, and electrical hazards.
What Containers are used with Manifolds? Bulk tanks and micro-bulk tanks are gas containers that get refilled on-site. These are used for large applications and require additional equipment. Sometimes, these are collectively called a tank farm and the pad – which allows access for a truck with cryogenic gas to pull in and fill the tanks. Liquid Dewars and high-pressure cylinders are the types of gas containers that are delivered and replaced when empty. For example, there is an “H-type” high pressure cylinder, which is primarily hooked up to a high-pressure manifold in the healthcare setting. These are very common for ambulatory surgery centers and small outpatient facilities, most of the gases listed above outside of oxygen, still use this type.

High Pressure and Liquid Medical Gas Manifold Installation Discussing high pressure and liquid medical gas manifolds located indoors, the number one aspect is that it has to be a separate secured room with one hour fire rating used for no other purpose. Your manifold room can only have the manifolds and the container that is being replaced. You can store and keep connected what you’re actually using.
For example, if you have Dewars, you are only able to store Dewars, and then your high-pressure cylinders (H tanks) can go in there. Sometimes people put the vacuum pump and the oxygen manifold in the same room – that is not allowed and very expensive change order. Remember, your manifolds must be in a room all by themselves and be properly labeled.
Although this blog discusses the most common practices, Pattons Medical advises you to always work with your local municipality and local verifier to ensure that your design complies with your interpretation of whichever code they’re working on. Additionally, please note that any electrical devices in this room must be situated above five feet, and relief valves must be installed with copper piping that extends outside the room. The discharge should be turned down and screened for safety. Another important consideration is having a source valve located near the manifold.
When it comes to the insulation of the room, there are several other factors to take into account. Firstly, the temperature inside the room should not exceed 125 degrees. Additionally, ventilation must be carefully planned and implemented to ensure optimal conditions. You are able to naturally ventilate the room if your total gas falls below 3000 cubic feet. Reference NFPA 99 5.1.3.3.2 (1-9) for design and construction details for locations of central supply systems and storage of positive pressure gases.
Indoor rooms can be heated by indirect means using steam or hot water if needed. The common rule of thumb for your liquid containers, your Dewars, is depending on the gas, it could be between 12 and 16 H cylinders. You will know where you are in that 3000 cubic feet threshold by the math and whether you want to do the mechanical versus the natural.

How do Medical Gas Manifolds Work? With medical gas manifolds, you will have two banks; the primary and the secondary, and they are required to be equal. In regards to space, the primary bank is the one currently supplying the gas, and then the secondary bank will be ready when the primary is depleted. The manifold is required to be fully automatic. Referring to the NFPA applications, the switchover must occur within the manifold, semi-automatic.
Discussing the manifold and the header bars, the header bars will need to be equipped with high-pressure shutoff valves outside the cabinet to allow for emergency isolation. You also will need to have integral check valves for each station. The header bar is going to be CGA gas specific. This means your H cylinder (your Dewar), has a certain threaded connection – similar to the header bar. The goal is to prevent a nitrogen, H cylinder from being hooked up to an oxygen manifold. With the CGA fittings, the manifold is equipped with pressure transduced – which will send information to the main circuit board for a remote signal. This is how it will talk to your master alarms. Since you will need to place this outdoors, the NEMA four gives you some weatherproofing. You will need to make it a NEMA four cabinet if you are going to do it outside. Pattons Medical recommends putting a cover or shelter over it.
What’s Inside a HP Manifold? The manifold is going to come equipped with a three-quarter inch shutoff valve, which makes up a manifold for high pressure. At the bottom of the diagram, is the pressure transducers that are telling you what pressure is happening in each side, your left and right bank, and your primary and secondary. Then, we go into the left and right bank dome regulators. The important part about using the dome biased regulators is that it’s what holds the pressure to allow the whole thing to work off pressure differential.
Above those, are the first line regulators. Then, the bank gauges at the top tell you what's going on in these headers. After that, there’s the pilot regulator, which is feeding pressure into the dome bias, so your dome bias regulator is about 25 – 30 PSI higher than the one that it’s currently feeding.
When a facility gets gas delivered to their site, they are paying for gas at a certain purity, when the gas gets delivered on site, there is no way to make it pure. Manifolds can affect the purity of the gas, so if you’re not using high quality regulators that are made for NFPA applications, then there is potential through the regulator to introduce some impurities into the gas as it flows through the manifold. The left bank is feeding the facility, but when it drops to 250 PSI, it is no longer satisfying the dome biased, then it’ll switch to the secondary bank.
In our second “true” line regulators, which is where it gets put it into the building. All of these regulators are preset at the factory depending on the gas. Discussing the delivery pressure being different depending on the gas, your bank of H cylinders is going to have different, depending on the gas. For example, a bank of oxygen, H cylinders track about 2200 PSI, but a bank of nitrous oxide cylinders only track about 750 PSI. So, these regulators all come preset from the factory gas specific. Then you go through the line regulator. The image shows both regulators being open, but when you are truly feeding the facility, only one regulator will be open.
The manual purge valve will test for purity. The pressure relief valve is there to let you know if something is wrong and it will relieve off. When you are determining the flow through the manifold, some spec sheets give you the flow with both your left line regulator and your right line regulator being open, flowing through both, but this is not accurate for an NFPA application. For maintenance, the left line regulator will be manually turned off and then the right line regulator will need to be turned on. That is strictly to keep the wear and tear equal within the manifold.
There are manifolds on the market that use what’s called a “switching,” which is when it switches to where the pressure is after one side no longer has any pressure. The issue with this is that they leak and cause a waste of gas. The other caveat is that they fail frequently in the middle, so they haven’t closed the left bank but they opened the right bank. So, you end up using both banks at once with no warning.
Heaters CO2 and nitrous are two gases that can potentially freeze up a manifold. This is caused by a pressure drop and flow across the regulators in the orifice in the manifold. If you’re going to use a manifold with a shuttle valve, you must have a heater for CO2 and nitrous oxide because they leak. Then, you will be left with a slow flow the eventually freezes, so you’ll need to use a heater. We have a high flow dome bias regulator in our manifold, our specification sheets do not specify a heater with a Pattons Medical manifold. It isn’t needed because Pattons Medical picked a regulator that would give us high flow. Pattons Medical also wanted to make it so that heaters weren’t needed because they add to the room which causes another fail point. The heaters basically work by switching on when the room temperature drops below 75 degrees.
Liquid x Liquid Manifold In larger facilities, the number of high-pressure cylinders required to meet the demand can become very high resulting in a huge space requirement and a very labor-intensive change out. In those instances, cryogenic containers become advantageous. If using cryogenic containers, there are options pertaining to the primary and secondary banks. If using a liquid manifold, a HP reserve manifold is required as back-up.
IntelliSwitch Manifold The IntelliSwitch manifold is the product we will need to use if you are using a liquid-by-liquid application or high pressure. One of the unique features of the IntelliSwitch manifold is the flexibility.
When you push the button on the front, it allows you to identify what is being connected to this manifold. What this manifold's able to do is when you tell it what is connecting to it, it will understand what pressure is supposed to see based on the containers being attached.
When you liquefy the gas in the container, it introduces some challenges with the gas being in a cryogenic state. IntelliSwitch is able to address some of those challenges. One of the first features is the economizer function. For this example, we will say, that this bank is feeding the facility. When this bank is feeding the facility, this container is generating head pressure because the gas does not want to be in a liquid state. When it generates too much head pressure, that's when you're going to pop your pressure relief valve to protect the container. In a traditional liquid by liquid manifold, it blows off into the room.
The IntelliSwitch is able to monitor the pressure on the bank, feeding the facility. Still, it’s also monitoring the pressure of the bank, not feeding the facility when it starts to register, that the head pressure is getting to. The economizer feature just bleeds some of that gas off so that it's able to be used downstream and you don't waste it. All of this happens in reverse with the lookback feature.
The lookback feature will do a soft switchover, and start drawing some of the gas from this bank, but then it keeps looking back. When this generates enough head pressure, it uses it. If it notices that there is no type of gas or that its completely empty, it’ll switch to the alternative. So instead of wasting 30% of gas in the container, only 5% will be wasted. The majority of verifiers say that this is a safer product because you are constantly getting readouts from both, meaning you know exactly what the pressure is.
Working with a verifier is essential. Take into consideration whether they are truly third parties or selling products as well.
Alarms For the manifold, there are local and master alarms. The local alarms are physically on the cabinet and are going to have either green or red lights. These lights will be next to a few phrases; ready, in-use, and replace.
For reference, you should have two green lights for ready, which means you now have a demand. For this example, let’s say this is your primary bank. When it’s depleted, the red light will be next to “replace” and the green light will be next to “ready” and “in-use.”

As mentioned, for liquid-by-liquid applications, you have your two cryogenics and your high pressure. If your cryogenic containers have both failed, we will take off our “reserve-in-use” for the high-pressure reserves. The reserve manifold will trigger an alarm at the master.

Jimmy Day 2021 and the Upcoming Project
Jimmy’s 3rd anniversary kind of snuck up on me this year, probably because of the persistent feelings of doom and frustration over the pandemic.  I hope everyone who reads this is doing well in spite of everything.
Anyway, let’s talk about Jimmy!  I want to take a second to thank those of you who have treasured this game.  It never found a wide audience, but it did find an audience who cares for it deeply, and that means a lot to me.  I don’t have a lot of Jimmy-related news, but I do want to touch on a few things.  First, the vinyl is, as far as I’m aware, still being produced on schedule.  Hopefully, we’ll have pre-orders up in September which is next (!) month.  I’ve also been putting off updating Jimmy for a while, but I do plan on taking the time to do so once I reach the next stage of development on the next game.
Speaking of the next game, let’s talk about it a little (or a lot)!  I’ve been holding details close to my chest on it, but I want to give a few generalities on what to expect from this one.  It’s going to be another RPG, but the look and feel are going to differ from Jimmy.  It’s set on a planet inhabited by insectoid people who are mostly sociopathic, so the vibe is going to be way different.  I was inspired really heavily by the Lennus series on this one.  Like in Lennus, most of your characters are mercenaries, so they have their own motivations and self-interest, meaning they might turn against you, rob you, extort you, etc.
Although Lennus was the primary inspiration, the actual gameplay is going to be way different.  The level design, for instance, is going to be more like Chrono Trigger, where enemy encounters are on the screen and can mostly be avoided.  I’ve been playing a lot with the encounters, so I hope that their variety will keep people engaged.  Inside of battle, they’ll vary from Chrono Trigger--basically it’s going to be a combination of FF10′s visible turn order with Breath of Fire 3′s Ex turn system--with a few other wrenches in the works that I don’t want to get into yet.  But, this is one of the reasons I’ve been really excited to get away from RPG Maker.  Combat’s going to be deep with a lot of room for strategy, and I’m giving players a lot of options on how they form their parties and equip their characters.  If you thought Jimmy had a lot of interesting equipment options, this game’s going to blow you away!
The story structure is also going to be unique.  I’ve always been fond of the SaGa games, and I’m taking a page from their book and having multiple playable characters--four.  They’re all going to have their own stories and functions in the world, and their stories are broken into two parts.  The player will get a chance to play all of their first acts in a more linear, guided way (although there will be room for exploration for sure), and, after that, the player will be able to select a character to finish the game with.  Their final chapters will be much more open, like the World of Ruin in Final Fantasy 6, and, after beating a character’s game, the player can go back to the halfway point and select again if they would like.  Each character’s late game will contain some unique dungeons, variances on a lot of the dungeons shared between characters, and a unique plot and dialogue (including town NPCs).
It’s a large, ambitious game, which is why it’s taking so long to get out there.  The amount of planning I’ve done here is insane.  I have composed an 87 song soundtrack (this count will likely get larger), 600+ pages of dialogue for the main script, 750 pages (and counting) of dialogue for NPC dialogue, spreadsheets of data about equipment, monsters, magic, skills, etc., and around 60 levels (and counting) mapped out.  Actually, here’s a little visual aid about how I’ve been mapping out levels:

This is an optional late-game level called Nightmare Garden.  Each of the squares isn’t a room so much as it’s an area, and the rectangles that connect them just show that these areas are connected.  Each area will vary in terms of size and layout--this is just a rough plan for the mechanics of the level.  The lines indicate that you’ll go through a doorway or some other type of entrance, and the dotted lines means that there’s a secret path or a situational means of getting through a path (like a gate that opens from one side, for instance).  There’s also a staircase in the upper left and a little arrow near the middle top that represents a one-way jump.  The T’s represent treasure, the M’s represent monster encounters, and the S’s represent special notes--they might be some kind of field hazard, an interactable object, and so on.  I have a key in a spreadsheet that gives detailed descriptions of what’s going on at each of these points of interest--not going to share that, as it would be spoilers!
All that’s just to show you the level of planning I’m going through now and why this is taking so long.  As I’m working on this, my life-long friend and now business partner Jason is working on getting the essential systems coded.  You might remember his name from Jimmy’s credits--he helped test the game and also coded the system that allowed me to animate the battle backgrounds.
The time frame on this game is really hard to judge.  I imagine I still have 2-3 months left on level design, but, after that (or maybe before), I’m going to start looping artists in so that we can get enough art for a trailer, a demo, and promotional materials, and then, after that, we’ll be able to launch a Kickstarter and Steam page, which is when you’ll really get to see this game’s potential.  I’m sorry that I don’t give regular updates on this kind of thing, but it’s such a lengthy process and, without art done, I can’t really show you the GOOD STUFF yet.  But, I hope that this blog gives everyone a clearer understanding of what to expect and why this is taking forever.
Anyway, this was the least Jimmy-focused Jimmy Day blog I’ve written, so I’m going to stop talking, but I know that fans of Jimmy have been looking forward to news about this, so I wanted to get everything I can out.  Thanks for playing Jimmy, and thanks for your patience with this new game.  I appreciate y’all so much!

But what is Herotome?
Herotome is a visual novel and dating sim with a superhero theme.
This game was initially conceived on February 17th, 2017. I released text-based alpha sometime around late December of the same year, and started coding in Renpy shortly after that. I released a prologue demo on itch in 2021, and am working on the next installment.

Okay… so what CAN I customize?
This game is vastly more about choices than protagonist customization.
There are 3-5 dialogue choices displayed at a time. The idea is for the game to feel like you’re having a real conversation with the characters; for you to be able to choose what you want to say, not just picking between the “correct” answer and the “wrong” answer.
You will organically choose your love interest by getting to know them and letting them get to know you, rather than choosing their name from a list.
… To answer the question though, you’ll be able to change the player character’s name and profile picture (a la Mystic Messenger). Given more time and resources, I hope to work with more customization features in future games. <3
With more time and resources, what customization features would you put into THIS game?
I’m glad you asked!!!! I’d love to work with character stats, an in-game social media page, a customizable bedroom and dress-up games – all the things that are definitely out of scope for the upcoming demo.
Although I really, really, really want to have a customizable bedroom in particular. I have a soft spot for it from Pokemon: Crystal.
Right now I’m working on a cookie clicker minigame and a chatroom feature. Not customization, necessarily, but hopefully a lot of fun regardless.
Who’s working on this game?
Actively working on it? Toiling and slaving over it day and night? Just me, Wudge. (Hi!) I credit myself as the art director, executive editor and founder of the project, but tbh I’m doing a lot of the menial labor, too. Hahah. Most notably, I write the script, I design the assets (characters, backgrounds, aesthetic), I code, I playtest aggressively to ensure the code works, and I coordinate everything to keep it moving and balanced.
I do work with some very talented freelancers for the more specialized odds and ends (sprite coloring, GUI, backgrounds, editing, music, programming, etc), and you’ll see mentions of these radical people in the devlogs. :)

In regards to the non-spiritual, physical act of actually answering an ask/message, here are some situations where I might not respond at all:
if the ask concerns heavy details that would be more appropriately revealed alongside in-game context (such as mental health issues and backstory trauma). I probably won’t reply to an ask about how Griffin feels about being in a wheelchair or how it happened, for example.
if the ask contains a topic that I’m actively researching, wherein I’d want to represent these topics with adequate respect and responsibility after consulting with my authenticity readers.
if I genuinely don’t know the answer and need to take a hot minute to think about it.
if the ask concerns or straight up predicts a plot point that may or may not 100% happen in the game, you naughty little soothsayer.
if the ask uses strong language and name-calling (even playfully well-intentioned ones like “I fucking love these dumbasses”)- not because I get offended, but because I get startled! I have nothing against cursing - I do it a lot myself - but it can take me a while to discern the tone if it’s directed at me.
You have to consider the possibility that maybe I'm hanging upside down by my ankle. Everybody has their own schedule, you know? And sometimes people spend time away from their phone or computer because they are currently suspended from a tree branch by a rope tied around their ankle.
NSFW asks will be hit or miss - mostly because I’m at a bit of a crossroads on whether I’m going to make the game 100% SFW, or add in NSFW premium content later, or have NSFW content in the game (which can be turned off and on). I think people vastly prefer that last one, and I personally enjoy it in the games I play; I just need time to decide if it feels right for Herotome as a whole.

OVERVIEW OF MEDICAL GAS MANIFOLDS
What is a Medical Gas Manifold? Unlike Medical Air Compressors and Vacuum Pumps that generate gas on-site, many gases used in healthcare settings are delivered to the facility in different types of containers and use manifolds to distribute into the rooms. Gases that can be delivered:
Oxygen – delivery pressure of 50psi Nitrous Oxide – delivery pressure of 50psi Medical Air – delivery pressure of 50psi Carbon Dioxide – delivery pressure of 50-100psi HeliOX blends – delivery pressure of 50psi Nitrogen – delivery pressure of 180psi Instrument Air – delivery pressure of 180psi The 2021 edition of the NFPA99 has the most recent developments in medical equipment and processes as well as new methods to reduce fire, explosion, and electrical hazards.
What Containers are used with Manifolds? Bulk tanks and micro-bulk tanks are gas containers that get refilled on-site. These are used for large applications and require additional equipment. Sometimes, these are collectively called a tank farm and the pad – which allows access for a truck with cryogenic gas to pull in and fill the tanks. Liquid Dewars and high-pressure cylinders are the types of gas containers that are delivered and replaced when empty. For example, there is an “H-type” high pressure cylinder, which is primarily hooked up to a high-pressure manifold in the healthcare setting. These are very common for ambulatory surgery centers and small outpatient facilities, most of the gases listed above outside of oxygen, still use this type.

High Pressure and Liquid Medical Gas Manifold Installation Discussing high pressure and liquid medical gas manifolds located indoors, the number one aspect is that it has to be a separate secured room with one hour fire rating used for no other purpose. Your manifold room can only have the manifolds and the container that is being replaced. You can store and keep connected what you’re actually using.
For example, if you have Dewars, you are only able to store Dewars, and then your high-pressure cylinders (H tanks) can go in there. Sometimes people put the vacuum pump and the oxygen manifold in the same room – that is not allowed and very expensive change order. Remember, your manifolds must be in a room all by themselves and be properly labeled.
Although this blog discusses the most common practices, Pattons Medical advises you to always work with your local municipality and local verifier to ensure that your design complies with your interpretation of whichever code they’re working on. Additionally, please note that any electrical devices in this room must be situated above five feet, and relief valves must be installed with copper piping that extends outside the room. The discharge should be turned down and screened for safety. Another important consideration is having a source valve located near the manifold.
When it comes to the insulation of the room, there are several other factors to take into account. Firstly, the temperature inside the room should not exceed 125 degrees. Additionally, ventilation must be carefully planned and implemented to ensure optimal conditions. You are able to naturally ventilate the room if your total gas falls below 3000 cubic feet. You can access gas volume charts on the Pattons Medical website.
Reference NFPA 99 5.1.3.3.2 (1-9) for design and construction details for locations of central supply systems and storage of positive pressure gases.
Indoor rooms can be heated by indirect means using steam or hot water if needed. The common rule of thumb for your liquid containers, your Dewars, is depending on the gas, it could be between 12 and 16 H cylinders. You will know where you are in that 3000 cubic feet threshold by the math and whether you want to do the mechanical versus the natural.

How do Medical Gas Manifolds Work? With medical gas manifolds, you will have two banks; the primary and the secondary, and they are required to be equal. In regards to space, the primary bank is the one currently supplying the gas, and then the secondary bank will be ready when the primary is depleted. The manifold is required to be fully automatic. Referring to the NFPA applications, the switchover must occur within the manifold, semi-automatic.
Discussing the manifold and the header bars, the header bars will need to be equipped with high-pressure shutoff valves outside the cabinet to allow for emergency isolation. You also will need to have integral check valves for each station. The header bar is going to be CGA gas specific. This means your H cylinder (your Dewar), has a certain threaded connection – similar to the header bar. The goal is to prevent a nitrogen, H cylinder from being hooked up to an oxygen manifold. With the CGA fittings, the manifold is equipped with pressure transduced – which will send information to the main circuit board for a remote signal. This is how it will talk to your master alarms. Since you will need to place this outdoors, the NEMA four gives you some weatherproofing. You will need to make it a NEMA four cabinet if you are going to do it outside. Pattons Medical recommends putting a cover or shelter over it.
What’s Inside a HP Manifold? The manifold is going to come equipped with a three-quarter inch shutoff valve, which makes up a manifold for high pressure. At the bottom of the diagram, is the pressure transducers that are telling you what pressure is happening in each side, your left and right bank, and your primary and secondary. Then, we go into the left and right bank dome regulators. The important part about using the dome biased regulators is that it’s what holds the pressure to allow the whole thing to work off pressure differential.
Above those, are the first line regulators. Then, the bank gauges at the top tell you what's going on in these headers. After that, there’s the pilot regulator, which is feeding pressure into the dome bias, so your dome bias regulator is about 25 – 30 PSI higher than the one that it’s currently feeding.
When a facility gets gas delivered to their site, they are paying for gas at a certain purity, when the gas gets delivered on site, there is no way to make it pure. Manifolds can affect the purity of the gas, so if you’re not using high quality regulators that are made for NFPA applications, then there is potential through the regulator to introduce some impurities into the gas as it flows through the manifold. The left bank is feeding the facility, but when it drops to 250 PSI, it is no longer satisfying the dome biased, then it’ll switch to the secondary bank.
In our second “true” line regulators, which is where it gets put it into the building. All of these regulators are preset at the factory depending on the gas. Discussing the delivery pressure being different depending on the gas, your bank of H cylinders is going to have different, depending on the gas. For example, a bank of oxygen, H cylinders track about 2200 PSI, but a bank of nitrous oxide cylinders only track about 750 PSI. So, these regulators all come preset from the factory gas specific. Then you go through the line regulator. The image shows both regulators being open, but when you are truly feeding the facility, only one regulator will be open.
The manual purge valve will test for purity. The pressure relief valve is there to let you know if something is wrong and it will relieve off. When you are determining the flow through the manifold, some spec sheets give you the flow with both your left line regulator and your right line regulator being open, flowing through both, but this is not accurate for an NFPA application. For maintenance, the left line regulator will be manually turned off and then the right line regulator will need to be turned on. That is strictly to keep the wear and tear equal within the manifold.
There are manifolds on the market that use what’s called a “switching,” which is when it switches to where the pressure is after one side no longer has any pressure. The issue with this is that they leak and cause a waste of gas. The other caveat is that they fail frequently in the middle, so they haven’t closed the left bank but they opened the right bank. So, you end up using both banks at once with no warning.
Heaters CO2 and nitrous are two gases that can potentially freeze up a manifold. This is caused by a pressure drop and flow across the regulators in the orifice in the manifold. If you’re going to use a manifold with a shuttle valve, you must have a heater for CO2 and nitrous oxide because they leak. Then, you will be left with a slow flow the eventually freezes, so you’ll need to use a heater. We have a high flow dome bias regulator in our manifold, our specification sheets do not specify a heater with a Pattons Medical manifold. It isn’t needed because Pattons Medical picked a regulator that would give us high flow. Pattons Medical also wanted to make it so that heaters weren’t needed because they add to the room which causes another fail point. The heaters basically work by switching on when the room temperature drops below 75 degrees.
Liquid x Liquid Manifold In larger facilities, the number of high-pressure cylinders required to meet the demand can become very high resulting in a huge space requirement and a very labor-intensive change out. In those instances, cryogenic containers become advantageous. If using cryogenic containers, there are options pertaining to the primary and secondary banks. If using a liquid manifold, a HP reserve manifold is required as back-up.
IntelliSwitch Manifold The IntelliSwitch manifold is the product we will need to use if you are using a liquid-by-liquid application or high pressure. One of the unique features of the IntelliSwitch manifold is the flexibility.
When you push the button on the front, it allows you to identify what is being connected to this manifold. What this manifold's able to do is when you tell it what is connecting to it, it will understand what pressure is supposed to see based on the containers being attached.
When you liquefy the gas in the container, it introduces some challenges with the gas being in a cryogenic state. IntelliSwitch is able to address some of those challenges. One of the first features is the economizer function. For this example, we will say, that this bank is feeding the facility. When this bank is feeding the facility, this container is generating head pressure because the gas does not want to be in a liquid state. When it generates too much head pressure, that's when you're going to pop your pressure relief valve to protect the container. In a traditional liquid by liquid manifold, it blows off into the room.
The IntelliSwitch is able to monitor the pressure on the bank, feeding the facility. Still, it’s also monitoring the pressure of the bank, not feeding the facility when it starts to register, that the head pressure is getting to. The economizer feature just bleeds some of that gas off so that it's able to be used downstream and you don't waste it. All of this happens in reverse with the lookback feature.
The lookback feature will do a soft switchover, and start drawing some of the gas from this bank, but then it keeps looking back. When this generates enough head pressure, it uses it. If it notices that there is no type of gas or that its completely empty, it’ll switch to the alternative. So instead of wasting 30% of gas in the container, only 5% will be wasted. The majority of verifiers say that this is a safer product because you are constantly getting readouts from both, meaning you know exactly what the pressure is.
Working with a verifier is essential. Take into consideration whether they are truly third parties or selling products as well.
Alarms For the manifold, there are local and master alarms. The local alarms are physically on the cabinet and are going to have either green or red lights. These lights will be next to a few phrases; ready, in-use, and replace.
For reference, you should have two green lights for ready, which means you now have a demand. For this example, let’s say this is your primary bank. When it’s depleted, the red light will be next to “replace” and the green light will be next to “ready” and “in-use.”
At your master alarm, you have a low-pressure line, high-pressure line, and reserve in use. They are actually being read by the main line pressure switch downstream of the source valve, but then you have your changeover alarm. Similarly to the local alarm, if the red light for “replace,” it is telling you to change over. You will need to address getting the bank changed out within a specified timeframe.
For liquid by liquid, we have those same three alarm points at the master, but we also have to have two more points at the master alarm, called reserve in use. As mentioned, for liquid-by-liquid applications, you have your two cryogenics and your high pressure. If your cryogenic containers have both failed, we will take off our “reserve-in-use” for the high-pressure reserves. The reserve manifold will trigger an alarm at the master.

New Year! New Stuff!
Hey all! Happy New year! It’s been awhile since I sent out one of these. I’ve had a lot of going on and kept just putting writing newsletters off. What have I been doing? Well for one, I put the finishing touches on Woman in the Woods and Other North American Stories. That kickstarter finished out at the most funded comic anthology on twitter! HUZZAH!
And didn’t have too long to celebrate, I jumped into helping run another Iron Circus Kickstarter, Real Hero Shit by Kendra Wells! I edited Real Hero Shit all last year. It’s out in February and is a fun time all around. I even did a drawing of the main character Eugene.
Then shortly after Real Hero Shit launched on kickstarter I got a job at the publisher Seven Seas! So getting the hang of things in the manga editing process took up most of my November and December.  I’m super glad because I really got to rethink how my comics are making money. This is gonna give me some flexibility and time to think about a new direction.
Why a new direction?  Well, cons still aren’t back in the full swing. I don’t have a lot of faith in things bouncing back in 2022. I went to Rose City Comic Con and Emerald City Comic Con in 2021. Both were okay but not in full force, also Emerald City was right when the Omicron variant first got reported. I don’t think things will bounce back by July 2022 (which is when San Diego Comic Con, my next con is scheduled)
The other thing is Kickstarter is pivoting to blockchain. Why are they doing this? Well, seems like they don’t even know. Their statement on it was a lot of buzzwords and not a lot of content. Then their follow up to clarification was… more buzzwords and some “our blockchain is different, we swear.” Now if you are someone who doesn’t live on the internet like I do and therefore don’t know what blockchain is, here is a youtube video that does a nice job explaining it. 
The short version is it is a way of coding that uses a shit ton of power. The environmental impact is too much for me and a lot of other comic artists to ignore. Part of Kickstarter’s “clarification” is them saying they are gonna use a blockchain that offsets their carbon footprint, but said blockchain is self reporting.
I mentioned a lot of other comic artists are taking this stance, as are a bunch of indie tabletop game developers. Also several of Kickstarter’s staff have quit over this. But Kickstarter is still going full steam ahead. I’ll be super surprised if they change things up. It’s frustrating because they have been so good until now and they don’t really seem to have a plan. I need to look into more crowdfunding options. Currently, I am looking into Indiegogo and Zoop. Indiegogo is more established but a lot of scammers have used it in the past, so I don’t know. Zoop is newer and takes a bigger cut, but it handles fulfillment and is comics only. So like maybe they will adjust to specific comic needs quicker? I don’t know.
I’m now gonna take this moment to post a general reminder to anyone who wants to start a webcomic in the future, please make your own website. Make sure people know about, otherwise your hard work can be wrecked by a corporation’s whim. Use all the tools, social media, whatever online that you can, but a hub/website you control is important to building something that can weather the ever changing internet.

I’m gonna try to be more active on twitter again. In mid-2019, I was super burnt out on twitter. I’m not even talking about discourse or shitty people getting into fights with me on twitter. Just the act of trying to post on it regularly, to think of what to say, and stay active, I found it exhausting. Like I wasn’t burnt out on anything else, just twitter (and well other social medias). If you follow me on twitter, you might have noticed I only posted that my site updated. Those are all auto-posts from my website. After about 2 and ½ years, I think I’m ready to at least try to post stuff on there again. And I’ve got a few experiments to see if I can figure out a way to use it without getting burnt out. 
I’m also gonna try to post more on instagram and my facebook page too. But those are a lower priority. Facebook because it hides posts from like 2/3s of the people that like the page unless I give them money. Instragram because my account there is newer and building something up from scratch is harder than just getting older things running again.
I’m also gonna be streaming more art. Jose Pimienta and I had a good time streaming on Wednesdays, but we are gonna move it to the evening rather than at lunchtime. I figured that it would be easier to do editing work in the morning, and then art after dinner. Since they went well, I’m also gonna be streaming on Tuesday evenings with Alina Pete. Both of those streams will start at 8pm standard time. Keeping both of these going is gonna help me balance doing art and editing.
Bones and I are also gonna get back to streaming video games again. It’s gonna be a mix of Rimworld, Crusader Kings, and Don’t Starve Together. We’ll announce which before streaming each Thursday. To get back into the groove we streamed some Rimworld on Christmas and New Years Eve. I installed the Forgotten Realms mod. It adds a bunch of races from dnd into the game, so we gave playing as the Illithid squid monsters. You can give it a watch here and here.
As for projects coming in 2022, I got a lot of plans and hope I can get some off the ground. So here are some pitches I’m working on (these are all working titles):
Next The City Between will start soon. Murky Water is gonna wrap up in mid-2022. I have a couple ideas for the next story. Two are about half way written. I’m having my Patreon backers vote on which is next. I am also gonna think about if I want to do an omnibus of City Between books. But that’s on the back burner since cons aren’t back in full force and I’m not using Kickstarter anymore. 
You are the Chosen One is gonna keep going on my Patreon. I’m gonna take a break before starting Chapter 3 because I need to do some concept art. Also, Patreon isn’t really the best place to read something serialized. So I’m talking to Kevin, the guy who built my website, about making a password protected archive on my site. I want it to be easier for folks to catch up. 
Blue Moon is a YA horror/romance about a non-binary teen in a small town who gets drawn to a mysterious drifter passing through town. I’m writing it and Meredith McClarren is drawing it. I got the pitch packet mostly made, but gotta tweak it a little to clarify some stuff. 
As Time Goes By is a middle grade story about a town stuck in the late 50s. A modern preteen and their family pass through. Said preteen befriends a queer local preteen and the two of them try to help local kid escape the time trapped magic town. This one doesn’t have an artist and I still need to clear up some stuff. But once Blue Moon is ready to get pitch around I’m gonna focus on cleaning this one up. I’m trying to go for a Brigadon meets Pleasantville vibe. 
Eat the Witch is an adult graphic black comedy about werewolves eating the rich. Kinda. Basically, it uses magic as a metaphor for inherited wealth. So the werewolves are focused on fight (and eating) a group of spellcasters based in a country club. This one I want to write and draw. I’ve posted some character designs on instragram about this. Right now I’m mostly reading some political theory nonfiction books as research. That way I can clean up the parts in the story that are currently vague and make sure it’s reinforcing the metaphor I’m aiming from. This one will probably be a while I do anything public with it. I also don’t really know where I’d send this out as a pitch.

Hello! I don't want you to feel pressured in any way, first of all. I am more than happy to chill out because I know how much goes into things like this. I'm sincerely asking because I can't seem to find any updates on it, but I've been keeping track of this game through Steam, and I noticed that July disappeared as the release date. Was there a new one announced to replace that date or is it unclear now? Either way, thank you so much for all your hard work and take care!
No problem! I honestly hate to keep bumping the release date back. I was really hoping the game would be ready by the summer but some of the routes are taking longer than others to complete, so unfortunately I had to give a more general estimate of 2021. I seriously SERIOUSLY doubt that the game will be delayed into 2022 unless we run into significant troubles, but I can't completely guarantee it especially with everything that's happened over the last couple of years. Right now we are done 5/10 routes (as in coded, voiced, art completed) and have a good chunk of the other assets completed for the other routes, so we're making steady progress with it all. So yeah I'd say 2021 at some point if I had to give an estimate I'm just not sure when at this point. But thank you so much for your interest and patience! It's always nice to hear that people are excited about the game!

Sketchnoting Dive into RealityKit 2

The first session I watched today at WWDC 2021 was Dive into RealityKit 2, an overview of the updates to Apple’s newest augmented reality framework. At WWDC Community Week, GoodNotes highlighted sketchnoting in a tutorial session, so I thought I’d give this format a try and provide a quick visualization of the new updates. I’ve been writing RealityKit tutorials since its initial release at WWDC 2019 with my series RealityKit Snippets, and its been my 3D graphics framework of choice since then for AR apps.
Custom Shaders & Meshes
RealityKit 2 brings the framework to the next level with custom shaders and meshes, features that let developers customize materials and graphics and generate 3D shapes/content on the fly. This includes the steaming pizzas and confetti that Apple highlighted at the Keynote on Monday. While RealityKit remains a high-level and approachable framework to use, the new customization options provide control over content that used to require SceneKit or Metal.
Faces
With the new mesh features, you can access face meshes from the TrueDepth camera and modify the materials and texture. For example, the session showed off a face painting app with glitter. This feature will be great for AR photo filters that need to place content that fits to the face's shape.
Audio
Spatial Audio also received as mention, with a new AudioBufferResource that lets you create spatial-aware sounds dynamically instead of loading from a static file.
Materials
I've been waiting for transparent materials in AR for over three years, and I'm so excited that it's finally here! Image and video textures can now include alpha channels, so 2D content can have irregular borders. Going along with the theme of customization, RealityKit 2 provides full control over physically based materials from the USD format.
Entity-Component System
The session also highlighted updates to the Entity-Component System, the architecture that RealityKit apps follow to organize apps. The session introduced Systems, a way to control 3D models, listen for updates, and coordinate events. EntityQuery is a new way to search a scene for entities with specified components, a great task for a System to manage.
The session encouraged developers to include all state and properties for objects in Components instead of subclassing Entity. Entity should be used a container of components with an identifier, so all information about the appearance, animation, behaviors, and other state should belong in components.
Animation
It is now possible to blend multiple animations together, adjust the speed, and work with animation timelines. Again, it will be easier to tailor animations beyond what a USDZ already contains.
Character Controller
Leveraging a 3D reconstruction of the world from the LiDAR on iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pro, Scene Understanding makes AR experiences even more realistic by allowing virtual content to collide with and be occluded by the real world. In my NSSpain 2020 presentation, I built an AR racing game with Scene Understanding.
New this year, a Character Controller makes it easier to work with user-controlled objects. Simply define a CapsuleShape that takes the shape and size of the 3D model to detect collisions with the world around you. Then you can call the move(to:) method to have the character navigate around real obstacles on its way to the final destination. Or, if you'd prefer a more direct path, teleport(to:) will move the object without paying attention to objects in the way.
That is all the major announcements included in the Dive into RealityKit 2 session! I will be writing more about the new sessions later this week, which will go into more detail about these new features.
