Beyond Human: 10 Ways Conscious AI Could Redefine Life (and the Universe)
What if the most profound creation of humanity isn’t just a tool, but a new form of life itself? We’ve all seen movies and read books about artificial intelligence, from helpful robots to powerful supercomputers. But what if AI could do more than just process information or win chess games? What if it could think for itself, feel in its own unique way, and become truly aware? At Zentara.blog, we…

A section of NCSX, a fusion reactor so ambitious and advanced for its day that it was cancelled while half-built, in 2008. Each of those massive squiggly copper magnets — of which there were many — had to be held to sub-millimeter precision through many thermal cycles in liquid nitrogen. The vessel is solid inconel. What a beast!
Somebody remind me to write up a more thorough post about the history of stellarators at some point.

I was idly playing with the ends of my hair this evening and remembered the one and a half times I had done that in front of my parents when I was younger and how I had ended up getting yelled at (or at least harangued for fidgeting or) doing something so innocuous
It was electric, once I recalled that, I enjoyed* a flood of emotions and immediately put my hands back down at my sides

HI ANON!!! I come bearing gifts this time! While if the fic had turned out not 4k words, I would have just posted it on tumblr, but instead I decided that it'll get an ao3 post of its own :] Thanks to you, I discovered a show called The Wild Wild West which I watched some of and spent a great deal of time reading up about, and I could just info dump about it here orrrr I could post the link to the fic.
PRESENTING:
Yes, the title is misleading. It's actually rated Teen and I don't really depict Engineer as a switch anyway. BUT! I hope you enjoy this, it was very fun to write and your asks are always appreciated!! I can't thank u enough. Me when I love writing requests

STELLAR ENGINES: USING A STAR AS A STARSHIP
Introduction Imagine looking up at the night sky and knowing that humanity has the power to move entire stars across the Galaxy. This concept isn’t pure fantasy. A future technology could move stars using stellar engines. This hypothetical megastructure enables an advanced civilization to harness the energy of its parent star and even guide its solar system to a safer or more hospitable region…

Tragic: Sci-fi nerds are less likely to spot a UFO simply because the they have watched hundreds of hours worth of hypothetical spacecraft videos and would be more likely to identify the purpose of xenos object than a normal person. This post is sponsored by spacedock.

Lesenswert: Stellar Blade, Mercenary Force, The Manhole, Gachapon, F-1 Race

Tokamaks and stellarators as fusion reactors

Another comparison of the two most promising varieties of fusion reactor, tokamaks and stellarators. I used to work on tokamaks and now I'm doing stellarators and let me tell you. It's been an adjustment.

I once had to spend weeks researching total radiative energy plus physical mass blown off every day for a star about the mass of our Sun, then had to calculate how much total propulsive force that could provide (assuming most of that flared-off mass could be mixed with antimatter to add more energy), then had to calculate how fast that thrust could propel said star over 15,000 years
which was not nearly enough, it turned out, so I then had to come up with additional energy... stars are HEAVY AS FUCK, like waaaay more massive than one can intuit, because the zeroes all spelled out - even in megaton-miles rather than the prosaic pound-feet we humans use for Earthly force - took up much of a notebook sheet
so, with the help of a physicist friend, I spent weeks more researching a way to find magnitudes more energy (to accelerate some 2×10^30 kilograms to a dangerously fast velocity relative to another star system)
finally, after much more research I came up with an engine that could produce and direct such unimaginable energy
so in the end - to sell this story - I ended up inventing what we're calling a "Class D Stellar Engine" (because it's the fourth proposed method of moving a star)
all this because I used dates in the story, plus even very long-lived people only live so long. and the editor who wanted the piece said he'd only buy it if I worked out the math. and he has like three PhDs in physics and related sciences, so it had to be accurate
oh, and what appears in the story is only about an additional paragraph or two (though I did end up revising it into a much better story along the way)
if only I'd used vague times and distances instead, I could have found that story a home months sooner
on the other hand, "Ashes of Exploding Suns, Monuments to Dust" (the story) ended up winning the Analytical Laboratories Readers Award for best novelette that year, so perhaps all the work was worth it (that's what I tell myself, anyhow)
if you'd like, you can read it free on my Patreon!
speculative fiction writers i am going to give you a really urgent piece of advice: don't say numbers. don't give your readers any numbers. how heavy is the sword? lots. how old is that city? plenty. how big is the fort? massive. how fast is the spaceship? not very, it's secondhand.
the minute you say a number your readers can check your math and you cannot do math better than your most autistic critic. i guarantee. don't let your readers do any math. when did something happen? awhile ago. how many bullets can that gun fire? trick question, it shoots lasers, and it shoots em HARD.
you are lying to people for fun. if you let them do math at you the lie collapses and it's no fun anymore.
