Today I learned...
In 1894, Washington Irving wrote a short story titled "The Devil and Tom Walker," about a man who sells his soul to the devil.
In 1936, Stephen Vincent Benét was inspired by Irving's story to write a similar one, titled "The Devil and Daniel Webster," where a man who sold his soul to the devil is defended by Webster, a real-life attorney.
In 2018, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina aired an episode titled "The Trial of Sabrina Spellman," which features a version of Daniel Webster (played by John Rubinstein) who has sold his soul to the devil.
In 2021, John Rubinstein appeared in Headless: A Sleepy Hollow Story, based on Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," playing a man who has, in a manner of speaking, sold his soul.

Ghosts of a Lunatic Asylum - Stephen Vincent Benet
Here, where men's eyes were empty and as bright
As the blank windows set in glaring brick,
When the wind strengthens from the sea -- and night
Drops like a fog and makes the breath come thick;
By the deserted paths, the vacant halls,
One may see figures, twisted shades and lean,
Like the mad shapes that crawl an Indian screen,
Or paunchy smears you find on prison walls.
Turn the knob gently! There's the Thumbless Man,
Still weaving glass and silk into a dream,
Although the wall shows through him -- and the Khan
Journeys Cathay beside a paper stream.
A Rabbit Woman chitters by the door --
-- Chilly the grave-smell comes from the turned sod --
Come -- lift the curtain -- and be cold before
The silence of the eight men who were God!

American muse, whose strong and diverse heart So many men have tried to understand But only made it smaller with their art, Because you are as various as your land,
Stephen Vincent Benét the first stanza fron the "Invocation," John Brown's Body.
I don't remember when I first read these lines, or perhaps heard them, but I do remember how the resonated in me. Diverstiy isn't a bad thing, it's an indelible quality, the essential thing about being American.

We thought we were done with these things but we were wrong.
We thought, because we had power, we had wisdom.
We thought the long train would run to the end of Time.
We thought the light would increase.
Now the long train stands derailed and the bandits loot it.
Now the boar and the asp have power in our time.
Now the night rolls back on the West and the night is solid.
Our fathers and ourselves sowed dragon’s teeth.
Our children know and suffer the armed men.

“When the prophets of strange religions ball out their bizarre despair, do not join them on the mountain.
Say only it is here, it is here.
Break your bones to mend your soul, die trying, a constellation of unabsolved fury a dichotomy of distress.
Born of rage.
Forced into narrower and narrower avenues of existence not by other but by self, is this who I really am?”

Short Story Review: The Devil and Daniel Webster/Stephen Vincent Benet
link:
http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0602901h.html
The concept of a lawyer defending someone who sold his soul to the Devil, arguing with the Devil himself, is very cool, but I feel that the story disappointed me on the delivery. I kept on waiting for something to happen and was let down by the ending; and while I get the ending I can think of ways to make it stronger, especially since SVB knows how to use strong, descriptive language.

April 26, 2025: Butter, Olive Oil, Flour, Lucia Cherciu
Butter, Olive Oil, Flour Lucia Cherciu
Even the grocery list is a love poem, a prayer— God, let me keep what I love.
Peaches, cheap. Books, brilliant— mine so I can underline.
How aromatic the apricots, how sharp the novels.
Together, we have planted an orchard.
I don’t understand the word defensive: are you supposed to just sit there?
I don’t think we have this word in Romanian; we also don’t have a word for camel toe.
Or panty line: if you don’t see one does it mean you’re going commando?
You always put a spell on me. And everything I want is here—
but where am I?
