Yikes, really lost track this time around (what's new?)... I've got seven for y'all this 'week'.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (Christopher McQuarrie, 2025)

That biplane sequence is more than worth the price of admission, alone. Damn! Otherwise, this was a whole lot of fun when it wasn't a whole lot of recap and uneven pacing. Pretty far from the best of the series, pretty far from the worst. - 7.5/10

The Phoenician Scheme (Wes Anderson, 2025)

Something felt off, here, and for far too long I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Then a name dinged in my head: Bruno Delbonnel. This is very likely Wes Anderson's worst film. That's not to say it's all Delbonnel's fault, or that Delbonnel isn't a great cinematographer. It isn't, and he is. Hell, he shot one of the best shot films of the 2010s. His work just doesn't quite fit, here, in the most subtle, irking manner possible. But I also think this is the first time I've felt that Anderson's screenplay gets in its own way. It's convoluted in a manner that actively prevents many jokes from landing, and keeps the pacing from hitting that sweet spot that Anderson has so often hit dead-on. Most still works incredibly well, though. The music and production design are stunning. The hand grenade and assassination gags only ever get better throughout the film. And the cast (minus a distractingly miscast Benedict Cumberbatch) is unsurprisingly fantastic. Benicio Del Toro's deadpan delivery is right at home and makes for so many amazing moments. And Michael Cera needs to be nominated for an Oscar... he easily and completely stole the film. - 7.5/10

September 5 (Tim Fehlbaum, 2024)

Impeccably paced and superbly acted. The editing of new and archival material is seamless and wholly effective. I found myself holding myself far too often for a film where I knew exactly how the events were going to unfold. So well done. - 8.5/10

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Jeff Fowler, 2024)

Fun. Not nearly as good as the first. Probably better than the second. Just good old family fun. - 7/10

Havoc (Gareth Evans, 2025)

Fucking terrible. Messy camera-work, laughably bad performances, and writing that seems to have never heard actual humans interact while stealing every generic scenario from every awful action flick of the last 30 years. - 1/10

Presence (Steven Soderbergh, 2025)

A wildly effective slow-burn. The camera-work is completely immersive without ever once distracting or feeling gimmicky. And the writing is a perfect blend of haunted house cliche and emotional complexities that allows for an utterly devastating reveal that will stay with you like a... well, a ghost. - 8.5/10

Notes: Recorded from front right orchestra. A few dropouts, never longer than a minute. Decent washout at times and some camera wandering downwards. There was a head smack in front of me, so there’s no real way to explain a consistent part of the shot that is obstructed. I did most of the time shoot from either side of the head. This results in some interesting angles and focusing choices throughout. NFS forever except through master and NFT through June 24, 2028.

The first two people to sign my guitar (see previous posts) were Larry Norman and Jamie Owens, both at the Joyland Christian Music Festival in Wichita, KS. There was one more fellow that signed it on that trip: Dave Boyer.

Dave Boyer was something of a misfit at the show. This was at a time when "Christian Rock" was just coming into its own. Larry Norman was the big daddy of the movement. Others there were already well known (Jamie Owens, Darrell Mansfield), but all of the music was contemporary or rock. Except Dave Boyer.

For starters, he was a generation older than everyone else. Born in 1934 he was 13 years older than Larry Norman and 20 years older than Jamie Owens.

But more than that, his music was completely different from what was happening on all the other stages. Everyone else was rock, Dave was Big Band.

When Boyer was a teenager he was the master of ceremonies for the 500 Club in Atlantic City, NJ. Also known as "The Five," the club was owned by mobster Paul "Skinny" D'Amato and hosted acts including Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Milton Berle, Eartha Kitt, Nat King Cole, Liberace, and a host of others. On the advice of his manager, Dave changed his name to Joey Stevens, and ended up performing with these superstars. His two instruments were his saxophone, and his crooner voice.

In 1965 Boyer was caught up in fast living, drug and alcohol abuse, and a road headed to destruction. He was on his way to a planned suicide when he passed a little church that reminded him of his childhood, called his brother who was a pastor, committed his life to Christ, and began playing and singing "Big Band Gospel."

As of this writing, Dave is 91 years old, and still performing concerts regularly.

My Week(s) in Reviews: July 28, 2024

Deadpool & Wolverine (Shawn Levy, 2024)

Not perfect, but still a shitload of fun. Fan service moment after fan service moment fill this newest addition to the far-too interconnected MCU, giving fans all the gasp-inducing moments they could hope for, and very few that they went in expecting. I expected this film to open up the MCU more in terms of the Multiverse, but really like that they instead opted to use it as an ending to the Fox branch of the MCU while further exploring the Merc with a Mouth's deepest insecurities in the most accessibly meta manner imaginable. - 8/10

Longlegs (Osgood Perkins, 2024)

This is bloated with an awkwardly realized atmosphere that turns a creepy premise into a nightmare of 'elevated' horror clichés and forced quirkiness. It does have its moments, and the overall concept is appropriately chilling, but the execution is just so damn pretentious that it drains all of the potential out of the final product. But hey, at least Nicolas Cage is having fun. - 5/10

A Quiet Place: Day One (Michael Sarnoski, 2024)

Meh... there's some fair to solid tension built throughout, but there's nothing new here. And the character work is—at its best—boring and predictable. Unnecessary prequel is unnecessary. - 5.5/10

I also revisited Christopher Nolan's Interstellar for the first time in just about five years because someone sent me some TikTok theory that the whole movie is McConaughey's journey through the afterlife. It's a theory that holds very little to absolutely no water at all when you actually watch the film, but it gave me a reason to watch it again, so there's that. And I had my annual screening of Steven Spielberg's Jaws; as perfect a film as there's ever been.
