I wonder how much of Alphinaud's ARR attitude not only comes from the teenage "I know better" mindset, but also from him seemingly not having any actual friends growing up. He certainly seemed to *impress* people, but did he ever befriend anyone? No one talks about him having any kind of proper camaraderie back at the Studium...

im like, nearly certain you’re right. almost everything about his upbringing would lead to having no friends, and nothing that we know about vis a vis the twins as kids points to them having friends that aren’t adults? alisaie mentions shes happy hes hanging out with arenvald bc that Never happened before and ALSO she mentions not bringing anyone over to hang out. n despite alphy having people over they were all like... this 13 year old invites you a college student to his estate how are you. like look the twins are rich and go to private schools around their house. setup one. everyone mentioned to come over and hang out in the short stories or their memory is like, krile. urianger. grandpa's friends. theyre close with much older people. theyre INCREDIBLY smart as kids, and jump at least four grades. also, kids aren't often that fond of their-age kids who are way smarter, especially if they KNOW they're smarter than everyone. they absolutely thought they were better bc of it. they know better because they're smarter. 11 year olds in college are very cute, very impressive, but their brains literally haven't grown in yet so they cant be like, friends. they can be cool and rich and smart (whoa a 14 year old with a subversive understanding of politics!) but not friends. YKNOW? they were totally friendless kids who thought they were above most people if not just their age group. and they did not care at the time at ALL ghsdk

Back in the mood for reflecting on how it all started and honestly this exchange with my TMBG pal might be one of the earliest, if not THE earliest recording of the slow descent into Sparks madness. And also.....

Three

Were the things that came to Cibo’s mind upon stepping outside of the chamber.

First–

This was a depressing reminder of how the figure taking care of her, for all her human mannerisms and emotions and hurt looks, the figure she’s towering over is nothing less than an inhuman abomination not unlike the many she has struggled against to get to this point. She has not forgotten how she infiltrated the group of almost tribal humans and brought ruin to all of them. She remembers the rows of carefully preserved bodies with brain matter packaged and saved with the hope that somehow, someday, the owners of such bodies could be saved. She doubts it, but it meant a lot to them, The Fishermen, as they were called, so she remembers in her place now that thinking is unmuddled and makes sure to recognize it as such.

She just fought what could be considered an army and lasted for two hours. She died numerous times, but when death can be mended away with a thought, does it really count?

Second–

She is pregnant.

She did not want to be pregnant. But yet, there she is, with that sphere bloating her stomach.

She’ll keep it, of course. For research, mainly. And then, she’ll let Kyrii have it. She’s no parent and while this was their goal, it was his mission. She could not contain the Jealousy towards her own child, so it’s best to keep her away from it as cold as it may seem.

Checking in every ten or so years to see how development while connected to the Netsphere differs while isolated from it. Should be simple-ish.

Third-

Sanakan wanted a child. She would not be indulged. These desires of protection are hard to discern. Is she protecting her, or the carrier of the Net terminal gene? She could be lying when she said she wanted to save her. She could be addressing the incubated life-form.

Sanakan is duplicitous. She knows the actions of the safeguard have led to countless deaths. So with all this considered…

“Why should I save you, Sanakan?”

The answer is: she doesn’t know.

Sanakan knows that maybe she doesn’t deserve to be saved.

There’s not a single thing within her mind that indicates she needs to be saved at this moment. Cibo could deactivate every single synapse within her body, and leave her to rot for eternity. Not dead, but deeply, keenly aware of every moment, unable to move, be backed up. Something worse than a cessation of existence. That’s a power she holds over her now.

From her position on the ground, regeneration halted, legless, limbs bent out of shape and organs missing, with a substance that could most accurately be described as a goop dripping outwards, she bows her head forwards, stiff hair not bouncing or moving with the motion.
