We're topping and tailing the Top 100, this week, with two tracks that hit Number 1 and Number 10 respectively. Which, as I frequently say, is no indicator of quality - as this week amply demonstrates.

The Young Ones - Cliff Richard (peaked at Number 1)

It's been a while coming. We've had other Cliff songs from the soundtrack. We've had Shadows tracks from the soundtrack. But finally, we've got it, the main, title tune from the film The Young Ones. And honestly, it's... I dunno, it's fine? The Shadows do, at least, sound like they've been given something to do, with an actual melody that vies for space throughout the track with these tumbling, trembling strings. And cutting through that, we also get Cliff, in his purest, poppiest, most sentimental mode. It's well balanced, harmonious and pretty enough.

That's the good. But even without looking anything up about the film, I already didn't love the lyrics. I think the issue is the tone it strikes, more than the content. The song's about being young, and making the most of being in love while you're young. Which is fine and good, but the specifics of it come off like something written by a nostalgic old man pretending to be Cliff, not by 20-year-old Cliff himself. It's the same problem we've been seeing since Craig Douglas with Only Sixteen - with pop music increasingly obsessed with youth, older songwriters are trying to channel a youthful voice, and are just not that good at it, and it rankles. I mean, what actual young person would sing things like darling, we're the young ones / And young ones shouldn't be afraid. The admonition that we may not be the young ones very long feel like something your strict but well-meaning uncle would lecture you on. And literally who is young and free and in love and dreaming of how someday when the years have flown / Darling, then we'll teach the young ones of our own? It's the most middle aged "too wise for his years" songwriting, and I officially, properly hate it. Ironically, you've written Cliff a song about being young, and it just makes him sound like some old fogey.

This only gets worse when you look at the context of the film named for the song, which is all about Nicky, an aspiring singer played by Cliff, who gets together with his friends to save their beloved youth club from redevelopment as an office, all while hiding his singing career from his disapproving parents. This all sounds very much like a Disney Channel movie ahead of its time, but it also does sound like a half-decent story. But if you're going to play the "rebellious teen musical star shocks his parents" card, at least have him singing some proper rock and roll and not this neutered, sentimental, squarely-aimed-at-adults-and-not-actual-teens nonsense!

So Long, Baby - Del Shannon (10)

Thankfully, there's some Del Shannon coming up, which I suspect will remedy the lack of excitement in The Young Ones. Because Del is many things, but boring is rarely one of them. And indeed, we start strong here, with a weird squelching, distorted saxophone. At least, I think it's a saxophone, but I could be wrong. It sounds a bit like you've tuned up and are playing the bassline on a hedge strimmer. Nasty, in a good way. Which is a trend that will continue through the rest of the track, with thumpy, rough drumming and what I genuinely and unironically think might be a kazoo? Which would be the only time I've ever heard one used seriously, if so.

The overall vibe is delightfully ugly and chaotic, which fits the song well. Because if the title didn't clue you in, this one's a real messy break-up ballad. Now, Del's never pulled his punches - Hats of to Larry was proof of that - but I think he hits new lows of meanness, here. Though honestly, it sounds like he's justified, with it. You see, his girl's been cheating on him. I see your laughin' and tellin' everyone in town / That you've made a fool of me, he explains. But it doesn't bother him. I got news for you / I was untrue too / And I don't care what you say. She may have got herself other lovers, but so does he, and so he just tells her, with no small degree of vitriol, to shove off. If you ever go away, promise me that you'll stay / Far, far, far, far, far from me, he sings, and you can hear the relish in his voice at the prospect of finally seeing this girl off. HE soudns downright gleeful, and I am loving it.

Musically, all this is also wonderfully stompy, with thumpy drums, none too polished, a tambourine, and a backing track that's constantly stopping and starting, putting a heavy emphasis on almost every other word that Del's singing. All this does not for a subtle track make, nor is it a track that necessarily paints Del in the most flattering light, as a lover. He's not a gracious loser, at least. But all that said, it is awfully good fun. Much better fun that Cliff's offerings, at least. Give me angry breakup over nostalgic waffle, any day!

Del's got such a distinctive vibe, all anger and explosive energy and weird experimental noises. He's sassy, he's honest, he's kind of savage, and I love him. He's got all the rebellious spirit that Cliff's character should have had, in The Young Ones. And thankfully, we're going to see more of him - Del keeps charting all the way through until 1965, albeit sporadically. I'm looking forward to it already!
