The Weeknd - Blinding Lights 2019
"Blinding Lights" is a song by Canadian singer-songwriter the Weeknd, from his fourth studio album, After Hours. The song was released as the album's second single. I was going to do a whole journalistic deep-dive of this, but upon further reflection, 1) that would require labor I don't want to do, and 2) everyone but me is probably aware of this kind of shit and over it by now.
But I want to talk for a moment about a new "Country Gospel Christian" artist that is "blowing up" on YouTube and Spotify right now (I'm being sarcastic) named Aisha Sparkle.
YouTube Music, forever may it functionally persist, decided to drop one of her songs into my stream. Curious, I DuckDuckGo'd her.
Oddly enough, no image results matched the picture of the lady tied to the track.
Okay, fine. DuckDuckGo isn't perfect. There's still Google. Let's see.

Yeah so this is AI generated, at least partially. All these tracks and entire albums have been dumped online, everywhere, in the last couple days, all with different lazy AI art.
The songs themselves are at least some kind of guided AI, because they're lyrically a little awkward at times, but sound like actual songs, with structure. Or it's just a really good AI, trained on this kind of music.
Honestly, the bar for white people "praise and worship" music is so low, it's hard to tell. Just endlessly mash up a handful of vaguely-positive Christian-esque platitudes, maybe start with a hooky chorus, and literally anyone or anything can generate one of these, and it sounds...good enough.
Then synth the music and get an AI voice of a white lady, and bam. Time to generate some money!
I just did one on ChatGPT, with the chorus "We Rise in Glory":

We all know this is doable and relatively easy now. But it's still amazing to run into it in the wild.
Whoever did this isn't even hiding it, obviously. The AI photos are lazy, and they're flooding the platforms with it. Which is the point. People who stream this kind of music probably won't notice that it's AI slop, because it is just good enough to pass as the mid thing they like.
And they don't seem to notice or care, judging from the YouTube comments.
...Assuming any of those are even real. That's probably part of the algorithm pumping, fake engagement.
Again, we all know this is what can be done now. But to stumble into it is still jarring. Especially when YouTube Music just drops it into an auto playlist.
Interesting note: why didn't DuckDuckGo show me any of these pictures? And why, then, did Google?
My guess is, while both are now using AI in search results, DuckDuckGo might still be sensible enough to weed out AI slop from search results. Because no one is looking for AI slop. And of course Google absolutely does not care, because they want to be the world's foremost AI slop company.
I went hard for awhile with AI art, to understand how it's made and all its quirks. And maybe that taught me something. I don't know. I assume everyone can become canny enough to sniff this crap out.
And clearly we have to, because this kind of thing is only going to get worse.

...Also AI-generated fiddles don't sound quite right. And the lyrics are always off in subtle little ways. And all the songs are around 3 minutes and don't have instrumental breaks.
...Also, Aisha Sparkle? That was the first red flag. It's probably some esoteric SEO thing, but it's so transparent. Issa Sparks would be better. Traylor Switch. Take it seriously, you bums.
All of this still requires a careful human hand to pull off atm, and shockingly, people scamming Christians for money are only willing to work so hard at it. Usually because they don't have to.
And that's certainly not something you need AI for. But damn if it doesn't make it faster!
Also NO, I'm not the one doing this. I like making fun of terrible people, not being one. Plus, why put all of this work in to make garbage for maybe a little bit of money, temporarily? Just make a good thing, if you can, and that could maybe generate a little money forever. You have to really just care about money NOW NOW NOW and nothing else to commit yourself to shit like this.
And if I cared about money, I wouldn't pay to use Tumblr. Like, come on.

Silco sat at his desk, fingers pressing into his temples as the relentless bass from below rattled the very foundations of his office. The whiskey in his glass trembled, tiny ripples distorting his reflection in the amber liquid. The pounding beat was an unwelcome intruder, a cacophony of chaos infiltrating the space he carefully curated for control and quiet contemplation.
It had been going on for hours. The deep, gut-punching basslines, the erratic synths, the way the sound seemed to climb the very walls of the Last Drop like an invasive weed, choking out the silence he so valued. He prided himself on patience, on his ability to endure discomfort when necessary, but this? This was bordering on insufferable. Every vibration felt like a personal offense, each reverberation through the floorboards a taunt.
With a sharp exhale, he pinched the bridge of his nose.
It was nights like these that tested him—when the Last Drop ceased to be an empire and instead became an overgrown playground for reckless indulgence. And the conductor of this particular madness? Y/N. Her music choices had only grown more insufferable, the bass vibrating through his very bones like some cruel experiment in torture. The masses below revelled in the chaos, blind to the finer aspects of power, of order. They did not see how quickly a kingdom could crumble when left to the whims of unchecked, reckless energy.
The door creaked open without a knock, and Silco barely lifted his gaze. He already knew who it was.
Jinx sauntered in, her signature wild grin plastered across her face. She bobbed her head in perfect rhythm with the thundering bass, twirling one of her blue braids absentmindedly as she leaned against the desk. She was the very embodiment of everything that grated against his carefully structured existence—spontaneous, erratic, untethered. And yet, despite the headache pounding behind his eyes, he couldn’t bring himself to reprimand her.
“Ohhh, this is a good one,” she chirped, tapping her fingers against the wood in sync with the beat. “I mean, c’mon, it’s got that deep ‘boom-boom’ that just hits right here.” She pounded a fist against her chest for emphasis, her grin widening.
Silco barely resisted the urge to groan. “Jinx—”
“You’re welcome, by the way,” she cut in, plopping herself onto the edge of his desk without a care. “I told Y/N to crank it up tonight. Figured the Drop needed a little extra juice. I mean, you always say we should keep the people happy, right?”
Silco finally looked up, narrowing his good eye at her. “The objective is to maintain control, not succumb to reckless anarchy.”
Jinx snickered, wiggling her fingers in a ghostly manner. “Ooooooh, scary dictator talk. You sound like a fancy old man who’s mad that kids these days have fun.”
Silco rubbed his temple again. “It’s not fun. It’s an assault on the senses.”
Jinx pouted dramatically, slumping forward and resting her chin in her palms. “Oh no, poor ol’ dad can’t handle a little bass. Want me to knit you a little pair of earmuffs? Orrrrr, maybe you could, I don’t know, just enjoy it for once? Shake that fancy ass of yours to the beat?”
His expression remained flat, unimpressed. “I am not—”
“Oh, but you could,” she sing-songed, kicking her feet playfully. “Just picture it, Silco! You, out there, right in the middle of the dance floor, just—” She flailed her arms wildly, mimicking some exaggerated version of a clubgoer lost in the music.
He closed his eyes briefly, inhaling deeply through his nose. “Jinx.”
“—Oh! Or what about that little snap-step thing I saw some of the bar guys doing?” She hopped down from the desk and did a wildly uncoordinated shuffle across the office, punctuated by finger guns. “Tadaaaa~”
Silco exhaled sharply, tilting his head back as though praying for patience from gods he did not believe in.
Jinx only grinned wider. “I mean, I’d pay money to see it. But, y’know, that’d probably make you explode from sheer old-man rage, huh?”
Before he could reprimand her, a particularly aggressive beat drop sent a violent vibration through the floor, making the whiskey glass rattle audibly. Silco’s fingers flexed against the armrests of his chair, his grip tightening.
Jinx cackled. “Ohhh, that one was nice. Felt it in my bones.”
Silco let out a slow, controlled breath and stood, smoothing his vest as he made his way to the record player in the corner. His fingers hovered over a particular record, his expression unreadable as he carefully placed it onto the turntable.
If Y/N insisted on turning his club into a war zone of sound, then she could deal with the consequences.
“I assume you’ll be sending her a ‘sternly worded’ letter?” Jinx teased, waggling her eyebrows.
Silco turned a slow, pointed glare on her. “She’ll be receiving a lesson.”
Jinx grinned wide. “Oooooh, I like the sound of that.”

The bass still throbbed in Y/N’s chest as she climbed the steps to Silco’s office, the heat of the Last Drop’s energy still buzzing under her skin. The crowd had pulsed like a living thing beneath her hands, the music bending to her will, building and breaking in waves that sent the patrons into a frenzy. It was intoxicating—the power of it, the way she could make them lose themselves in the rhythm. But now, as she neared the heavy door at the top of the stairs, the rush of the night gave way to something else entirely.
Anticipation curled in her stomach. She knew exactly why she’d been summoned. Silco, ever the arbiter of control and refinement, had likely been seething in his office, ears under siege from the bass that had rattled the very floorboards beneath him. She could picture it—his fingers pressed to his temple, his glass of whiskey trembling on the desk as the vibrations invaded his carefully maintained space. And she? She had been the source of that invasion.
She rolled her shoulders back, shaking off the remnants of adrenaline. She wasn’t about to slink in like a guilty child. She had filled the Drop with life tonight, had given its people something to lose themselves in, and if Silco couldn’t handle a little bit of raw energy, well—that was his problem.
The door clicked shut behind her as she stepped inside, the deep thrum of the club below now muffled to little more than a distant heartbeat. The air in here was different—cooler, still, thick with the scent of cigar smoke and aged whiskey. It was a stark contrast to the chaos below, a world apart. Silco stood by the record player, his sharp features cast in the dim glow of his desk lamp and the bleeding neon that slipped through the blinds. A glass of amber liquid swirled lazily in his hand as he regarded her with an expression that was impossible to read.
“You have a talent for disruption,” he said, his voice cutting through the silence like a blade. “I presume you find that amusing.”
Y/N smirked, leaning against the doorframe. “Keeps the place alive, doesn’t it?”
Silco exhaled slowly, setting his glass down with deliberate care. “There’s a difference between life and chaos, Y/N. A difference you seem determined to ignore.”
She scoffed, crossing her arms. “And let me guess, you think your ancient records have more soul than a packed dance floor?”
He tilted his head, his gaze unblinking. “I think they require a finer ear. Something you clearly lack.”
A sharp retort sat on her tongue, but before she could let it fly, he reached for the record player, placing the needle down with practiced precision. The moment it touched vinyl, a swell of orchestral strings rose into the air—smooth, deliberate, like liquid gold seeping through the cracks in the silence. The contrast was stark. It stripped away the sharp edges of her beats, the raw, pulsing energy of her set, and replaced them with something… controlled. Something rich, something—
She hated to admit it—beautiful.
Her fingers twitched at her sides. She didn’t want to give him the satisfaction, but there was something about the melody that pulled at her, demanding to be felt. It was slow, winding, carefully composed—so unlike the wild unpredictability of the beats she mixed.
Silco’s lips curved into something knowing. “Music isn’t just about volume, Y/N. It’s about the spaces between the notes. The anticipation.” He stepped toward her, extending a gloved hand. “Feel it.”
She hesitated, glancing at his outstretched palm. “What, you want to dance?”
His expression didn’t waver. “Consider it a lesson.”
A challenge, then.
Her fingers brushed his as she took his hand, warmth meeting cool leather. His grip was firm but not forceful, guiding rather than demanding. He led her in a slow, measured step, the classical melody dictating their movements. It was nothing like the feverish pulse of the club below. This was control, precision—Silco in every sense of the word.
His body moved with a grace she hadn’t expected, every step deliberate. Y/N found herself focusing, attuning to the way the music guided them, the way he dictated the rhythm with the slightest shift of his weight. It was maddening, in a way—being so completely at his mercy in something as simple as a dance.
“You feel it now?” he murmured, voice low, like he already knew the answer.
She swallowed, glancing up at him. “It’s… different.”
His fingers flexed around hers, just enough to remind her that he was leading. “Perhaps you’ll learn to appreciate a more refined taste, given time.”
She huffed a quiet laugh, tilting her head. “Or maybe you’ll learn to loosen up and enjoy the noise.”
His lips twitched—not quite a smile, but close. “Unlikely.”
They danced for longer than she expected, the music stretching out between them, pulling them further from the world outside. The neon glow from the blinds painted streaks of red and blue across his sharp features, casting shadows in the hollows of his cheekbones.
Y/N wasn’t sure when the song changed, when one track faded into another. All she knew was that she was still moving with him, still following his lead. His touch was deceptively gentle, fingers brushing the inside of her wrist as he guided her through another step.
The music swelled, and for a moment, she let herself fall into it. No club crowd, no pounding bass—just the quiet, intricate dance between them.
She wasn’t sure who was testing who anymore.
The record spun, the music filled the silence, and for once, neither of them fought it.

Introducing to you - made over the course of a few months - a visual guide to cybertronian pedipalps and proboscis!
The general gist and inspiration for such being of course the episode Thirst and the fact that, up until that point, dark energon did not have any mutagenic properties only (in the show) being utilitised to revive the dead. What if, instead of being a side effect of dark synth energon, dark energon just... reactivated dormant pedipalps (remnants of a more buggy pre-metamorphosis sparkling/protoform lifestage)?
A more comprehensive look is down below- and don't mind how it's exclusively 'Cons lmao :P

Starting off, I referenced CYLAS' canonical pedipalps to try and understand the shapes being used which resembles a lapping type mouth that bees have (so considering there is a tranformers character named Bumblebee it feels appropriate but he ISN'T HERE), let alone the flexible proboscis which I just made as a siphoning type from butterflies which; this is the wikipedia image I used to understand mouth parts :P
Breakdown himself wouldn't need to open his whole face in order to consume energon, given that he has an opening and closing jaw in addition to having the dexterity and power of limbs and a neck to not require lapping, but energon is still drunk through the proboscis like a straw.

Continuing onto characters that would NEED their pedipalps, vehicons and other faceless cold constructs (whether you have the belief every cold construct is faceless or they recently shifted to facelessness to save on costs) by technically did not metamorphose like forged mecha and thus their mouth parts have not gone dormant. Instead, their construction means they have not known anything other than pedipalps and proboscis, having no experience at all with facial expressions and thus not susceptible to phantom sensations.
Though their jaws do not have joints or at least do not have an opening to function like an enclosed mouth, vehicons still do have one on the basis of having a neck and a location to store their coiled proboscis when not in use.

Unlike other cybertronians - forged or constructed - empurata survivors have their heads and/or faces completely remolded and restructured where they do not have a functioning jaw. They have in it's stead a reconstruction of the original pedipalps formatted appropriately to the new head mould.
Monoptics like Shockwave do not have enough room in their helms to have a mouth-like structure at all, instead the neck is reconstructed to open with the pedipalps; the proboscis when fully extended appears longer in monoptics but that is due to the fact the opening is lower and closer to it's base. Nulloptics like Soundwave have their entire face replaced by their mouth, often covered up in seamless panels that give the appearance of a screen, up until the nulloptic actually replaces the panels to include the electronics necessary to protect and display visuals.

In average adult cybertronians however, the pedipalps remain dormant - at least in their use for eating - and are instead used to produce vocalisations alongside the proboscis (which still remains in use by function of the liquid energon diet), in addition to being used in expression in conjuction with the many servos operating within the faceplate. The reason why, despite the variety of things pedipalps can do now that they aren't being used to consume fuel, that empuratas and constructs cannot re/gain a face with the same ability and level of complexity of the average cybertronian is because of the hyperactive function of those very pedipalps.
Vehicons can - if they so choose - express visually through the exclusive use of their pedipalps, but factoring in a faceplate with all of it's own complicated servos intricately woven into each other, the faceplate lacks the ability to split along the seams of the pedipalps and would restrain their mobility and prevent the cold construct from refueling. Empurata have a similar issue with the addition of their lack of functioning jaws and their modified head structure preventing the synergy of a faceplate. Nulloptics' heads are functionally all mouth so the corresponding faceplate cannot have features for optics or ridges, and monoptics' pedipalp expression is on their neck and thus a faceplate that matches where the mouth in their case would be a very bizarre choker-

Paladin Danse, the Brotherhood, Autism, and not being a person
dragging myself back to my forgotten fallout blog to rant abt how people seem to talk abt Danse's whole deal (which means. a lot of things. he has a lot of deals going on), by which I mean the fact he is more of a tool and not a person to the Brotherhood who is largely taking advantage of him, and people talk abt Danse being autistic (which I fully and whole heartedly believe is completely unintentional by Bethesda, but nonetheless very well written and present, so much so I consider it vital to his character) but never how both of these work in combination.
Been getting really into ENA lately, and a lot of ENA Dream BBQ seems to focus on the fact ENA is not so much a person but an entity doomed to toil forever, to LITERALLY die and even give pieces of herself away (her arm to enter the purge event) to complete whatever job she's been assigned, and is functionally more a tool than someone with personhood. So of course I have to make this about my favorite fictional man, an action I realize would get me taken outside and shot but I digress.
Back when I was active I had some semi well received takes on his character (such being largely de-desensitized and much more worldly than he is often depicted by fans-- come the fuck on, bro lived in the CAPITAL WASTELAND. Arguably one of the most inhospitable locales we see in the series, from my understanding) so maybe I've talked about this before but I think Danse's character suffers from being confined to the affinity conversations, particularly in regards to Cutler, who I feel is much more vital to understanding why Danse is the way he is than we're allowed to get info about.
He and Danse ran a junk shop in the CW, Danse-- who is a synth, who came into this world as a full-grown adult, with fake memories of a fake childhood and fake backstory (possibly the Railroad's work?), and as such we know (and later, he knows) Cutler was, most likely, Danse's only relationship (whatever you interpret it as, friend or lover) and thus only tether to the world outside himself. The shop and Cutler was his place(tm), what keeps him from being any other wasteland drifter. Cutler is probably everything to him. Cutler wants to join the Brotherhood, Danse follows, Danse likes the structure and sense of purpose because he's autistic. Then Cutler is gone, and all that's left is the Brotherhood with an environment perfectly suited to his neurology and with no tethers to the outside to ever make him even think of leaving them. There's nowhere and nothing outside of the Brotherhood for him, of course it becomes his life. Of course they're happy to have him, their little soldier who listens to their dear leader and follows directions so so good and follows the rulebook to every minute word and will never ever think of leaving or questioning them. Why would he?
I fully believe Cutler was real, as I feel like if he wasn't, Danse would talk about how he had to beg (beg!!!!!! he had to fucking ASK for them to look for the missing team Cutler was a part of, as if we had any reason to doubt their soldiers are units, not people) to look for Cutler or just mention that missing team at all and would have his fellow soldiers be like what the fuck are you talking about dude that did not that happen. Like he'd totally know. As such, him being gone left Danse in the perfect position to be fully modeled into whatever the Brotherhood wanted of him. Notice how he (which he even later acknowledges!) fully expects you to just...follow in his footsteps and wholeheartedly believe in and follow the BOS's ideology? Like doesn't even question that there could be a reality where these guys are wrong? How he full send believes synths are just machines and struggles even when finding out he is one, and thus forced to face they are in fact people with memories and feelings and personalities and identities and relationships? The BOS is just his objective reality.
He views himself as a tool because they view him as a tool, he is a Paladin, he's his squad's leader, his feelings and wants don't matter, just the mission and keeping his people alive. Not that he doesn't care, if anything we're shown that he cares so SO much. He cares so much about Haylen, about you. If you romance him, he's nearly sick with worry about you getting hurt, you leaving, doing something wrong to you. He just doesn't really know what to do about it or how.
He doesn't even consider having wants or desires for himself, unaware he operates as an extension of the BOS, not as a person who merely sorta agrees with them or just wants 3 meals a day and a place to sleep in exchange for shooting some guys.
Hell, the only time we see him break out of this is once he knows he's a synth, and thus forcibly ejected from the BOS and all he knows and believes in. Only then does he go "wait? what the fuck? I'm a person?". Note his utter offense at Maxson implying he knew he was a synth and was a purposeful spy and traitor, how even worse to him than being sentenced to death is having his faith in them doubted, his usefulness to them doubted. He's happy to let the player kill him, because it would be a continuation of their ideals. But the second his servitude to the Brotherhood, which he values above all else, including his personhood, getting questioned? Now he's upset!
Hell, he's even dehumanized OUTSIDE of the Brotherhood! See this comment from Piper when Maxson reveals him being a synth:

Dehumanization of autistic people is nothing too, take this really good chunk of an article I found trying to gather my own thoughts together for this post:

Besides, identity confusion is very much a thing to those with autism: both in regards to themselves as a person, but also about themselves as part of society. Danse is very lost and listless after Blind Betrayal, and furthermore with the knowledge he's a synth, that he's artificial and thus inherently different from many people around him, despite looking and sounding like them. He's just different, a feeling likely not new if we assume him to be autistic, and when we consider the multiple times in canon he describes struggling with interacting with others and understanding their feelings and actions. Being a soldier gave him an easy, simple, digestible answer to this confusion: he's a soldier. A soldier's conduct gave him a playbook to interaction and his own actions, an objective, structured way of life. It was made to appeal to him in every way, and was probably almost therapeutic.
He is, in my opinion, the perfect victim.
My point in vomiting words isn't to like, try to exonerate him btw. Any sort of "hes actually an innocent cinnamon roll who did nothing wrong!!!!" Danse depictions equally piss me off. Regardless of BOS brainwashing (they're a cult to me and always will be) or victimhood or diagnosis, he IS an adult and responsible for his own actions, and his discrimination and violence against non-humans and participation in BOS acts...but I also think it's just as shallow to imply he just, is a normal well adapted adult who agreed with the BOS bc he's a discriminatory ass, and not due to being the exact type of person who is incredibly likely to be victimized by an entity such as the BOS, and what the isolation of a person can do to them. ESPECIALLY considering him being a synth-- he is (whether accidentally or not or both) an active participate in the discrimination of his own kind, of people like him...is that not kind of spectacular, very interesting (and considering it's Bethesda...possibly unintentional?) writing? Especially when I feel we get very few examples of synths who are anything except perfect victims until like, Far Harbor came out. I just think this is a very interesting chunk of his character that barely got explored but exists to at least some extent, and I'm disappointed to seemingly see largely unexplored or under explored in fandom materials.

The saddest moment we can recall in covering all things Yn/Ln..
It's only been a week since the last one but another leak is out, this one is bittersweet. We all know Yn is one of the nicest people ever when it comes to her fans, she always spares time for them, always has a smile for them. Everyone in the media world can confirm that we always describe her as the happiest person in the room. But with this new song we see a different side to Yn - one im not sure we should've been allowed to see. This song though devastatingly beautiful -- was a personal moment for her. All her songs are moments for her. Moments we have been enjoying without taking into account how she could be feeling about all this. For that we are truly sorry Yn/Ln. We did reach out to her team with a personal apology and a promise to end the coverage on the leaks. But Yn told us to keep it going-- "I really appreciate it truly, but the songs are gonna come out until we find the person or persons responsible. Other media outlets are covering it. It's gonna happen, you guys haven't trashed me in any way. I'm okay with it, and im okay." (we were given permission to quote her on this.)
So we will continue with covering the leaks with her blessing. That being said this leak was a bit different. The first two were full produced songs at the ready for albums when she decided, if ever to release.
This one is a voice recording. A uninterrupted, unedited, raw sound of Yn sharing her idea for the song to her producer. Hearing the emotion in her voice during this we know whomever it is about meant a lot to her and it doesn't seem to have ended well. We have our suspicions of course but to who ever you are… wow, we're glad you couldn't break her. Because our queen is thriving now!

She sat out on the balcony with an empty glass of wine. How could she forget that one. She was a month in to her breakup when she wrote that. Everyone was going to see how he broke her. Before him she was never one to let a guy bring her down. She would end things the second a red flag appeared in her vision. Clean break - she was out. What made him so special. So worth it in her eyes she let herself fall away. She couldn't even tell you if he hurt her on purpose. Sometimes it just seemed he didn't know how to be in a relationship, didn't know the pain he could cause by letting girls hang all over him in front of her, seeing the pictures that would come out of his nights out with friends, arms around girls that weren't her. Telling her she was reading to much into it. Maybe she hurt herself more than he ever hurt her, but she thought she was in love and she was holding on for dear life, to keep them together. They both had crazy lives but she thought it could work, she knew it could. Until life had to slap her in the face to finally see what he had become. He was so sweet, till he wasn't. Maybe the fame changed him or maybe he was finally letting her see him. Either way, it was a tough way to find out the boy you loved was seeing another girl.

"Im on my way to him now! No, he doesn't know a thing. I wasn't supposed to be in for another 2 days but i wrapped up early and the studio agreed i was good to go." She said with a smile. Sitting in the back of a sleek black car, being driven around the beautiful streets of Monaco.
"…yeah i cant wait to see him. He's about to be really busy with the season starting soon so i want to spend as much time with him as i can…..okay, just let me know when you get in, we can go over all that when he has his meetings, i just got to his - gotta go. Love you Neal"
The car pulled up to his building and she was off. She only had a duffle bag with her essentials - the rest of her things she would have Neal bring in. She walked up to the entrance just as one of his neighbors was leaving, recognizing her they smiled and let her in. Her surprise arrival would go better than she thought.
Taking the left up to his floor she couldn't help but fell warmth spread through her. She couldn't wait to see that smile, those unruly curls.
She could hear voices at his door, his friends were over probably playing video games. She knew how that could go. Getting out her key he had given her she let herself in and walked down the hall toward the voices, about to call out to him.
She stopped cold as a new voice, a new sound, cut through his friends conversation.
A girl.
A girl, moaning.
Laughter erupted from the boys sat around the tv. They hadn't noticed her coming up from behind them just yet.
"He keeps this up he's gonna kill the poor girl ay" she couldn't tell you who said it. But they all laughed, big proud smiles upon their faces.
She stayed in her spot, keys and bag still in hand. To her right a door opened, a person stepping out from the bathroom. She turned and caught his eyes. He froze in the doorway when he caught sight of her. Disappointment in his face, he was about to step to her when another noise cut through to her.
"Landoooo" the girl moaned out.
Her tears hit the floor before the house keys did. She saw Max step toward her, reaching out his hand. His friends in the room turning to see what had fallen. Finally seeing her, Tears on her cheeks, mouth open in shock.
Before Max could touch her she was gone - turning on her heel, out the door to the lift she ran. The sounds of another girl calling out her boyfriends name fading and echoing at he same time.

the first time it happens.
- he’s in his penthouse. a bad night — shallow breathing, too many thoughts, can’t sleep. and then you say, softly.
“do you want me to play something? huey lewis maybe?” he turns his head like he misheard you.
you walk over to the keyboard in the corner (his idea, for “aesthetic balance”) and start playing “hip to be square.”
- not showy. not theatrical. just…calm. known. like a lullaby dressed in wall street synth-pop. patrick always had a piano in his luxurious living room, even if it was just for decoration it was probably because it matched the armchairs, and you knew he couldn't play it.
he stares. he blinks. “when did you—”
“oh, I’ve known it for a while. just thought I’d wait until you couldn’t sleep.”
- he cannot process this. you didn’t do it to flatter him. you did it because he likes it.
his silence is so loaded it’s almost terrifying. then he says, quieter than you’ve ever heard him:
“play it again.”
he starts testing you.
- he’ll casually say, “i listened to ‘if this is it’ today.”
then glance at you. like a challenge. he wants to know if you know the lyrics or the release date.
- and two nights later, you’re plucking it out on the guitar — badly, at first — but with that same calm, unbothered intention. like it matters.
“you learned it?”
“you said you liked it. of course i did.”
he looks away quickly, but you see it: the edge of a smile, almost too human. and then he clears his throat like he just felt something and wants it gone.
what it does to him.
- it starts to destabilize him in quiet ways.
because you’re not trying to win him. you’re not scared of him. you just…love what he loves.
- and for patrick — who’s used to admiration rooted in fear, vanity, and performance — this is dangerously intimate.
he starts associating your playing with comfort, with stillness. when the world feels like static, your voice or your hands on the piano bring it all back into frame.
- one night, when you’re halfway through “walking on a thin line,” he just sits on the floor. back against the bed. tie still on. eyes closed.
“don’t stop.”
“i wasn’t going to.”
“…i know.”
his reactions.
- he buys you instruments. obsessively.
vintage guitars. limited-edition synths. a baby grand piano. “i thought your other one had poor tonal structure.”
(read: he wants you to only play for him, on something he gave you.)
- you catch him humming something you played once — under his breath, at 6 a.m., while adjusting his tie.
- he never compliments you directly, but when someone else hears you play and says “that’s really sweet,” he looks disgusted. “it’s not sweet. it’s artfully exact.”
(he means: shut up, this is private. and it’s our thing.)

Prelude
Working with Sleep Token is always a pleasure. I get this deep seated selfish enjoyment when we start new projects, mainly because I’m safe in the knowledge that the experience is going to be beautifully intense and incredibly rewarding.
Tracking
We started working on ‘Two’ just before winter started in 2016. Working on maturing the structure and fleshing out tones. Its no surprise that when it came to the final tracking that we changed the sonic balance almost completely (this is a running theme by the looks of things) Time restrictions led to us using programmed drums, however we took samples of the real kit to sequence so that it didn’t ‘feel’ completely robotic or lost. Guitars last time around resulted on leaning on my Kemper, however this time we used a live amp and cab for the majority, the momentum from the tubes / movement of the cab is something I’ve had to accept is difficult to recreate ITB. Its easier just to go down the most direct route. I had recently purchased a one of a kind Randall modded amp from a friend in the states. It turns out its an early prototype from when Fortin partnered up with Randall, its not a looker but its a box of pure filth. The Fortin was fed into my Mesa OS, placed an SM57 on the cap joint of the cone and off we went, pretty straight forward really! Bass is a hybrid setup between two real basses and then a 3rd lane of audio from a programmed bass. Because of the way the song’s have been written, keeping the sub lows consistent is vital to ensuring the song flows without feeling disjointed section to section / genre to genre. Vocals is where the most change happened (from a tracking perspective). Originally we had finished and finalised everything with my go-to setup. Modded Oktava > Germanium Chandler > Empirical Labs Distressor. And for the most part it worked. However halfway through the process I bought a Slate VMS. A modelling microphone. Without going into too much detail, its a microphone that can imitate more expensive vintage setups and it does it without any issue whatsoever. Obviously when testing it out and comparing, the VMS won without breaking a sweat. So back to tracking all the vocals again. (The vocalist is amazing however, the repeat performances were just as good, if not better than the original final takes)

Mixing
Everything with Sleep Token (from a mix perspective) is orientated around the vocal. The vocal here is god and attempting to get the mix to flow any other way would have been very strange indeed. Sleep Token were very clear and concise about the structure for the mix, Vocals, Samples, Drums then everything else equal after the fact. Very much like how pop is built actually. It turned out to be the most happily balanced mix I’ve worked on. I expected to have a harder time balancing moving between a few different genres through out the track but in all honesty, it just worked. Which in itself is testament to the quality of the song writing. We worked on a few different ‘perspectives’ for the mixes, however in all honesty. The mixes came together with very little effort and the tracking stage defined a lot of the movements that would happen later down the line.

any tips for a total novice interested in music production? electronic is definitely a genre im most interested in. sorry if youve been asked this a bajillion times xx
this is great question! i'm 100% self taught, so idk if i've done everything the "right way" but i'll do my best
fall in love with it. fall deeply in love with a genre and learn everything you can about it. this will be your gateway, your reason to learn how to make music. for me it was chiptune, then synthwave, then breakcore. keep that love alive
get a DAW and learn it inside and out. ableton has a generous trial period, or i'd recommend pirating FL studio
every major DAW comes with a suite of stock plugins, both synths and effects. find tutorials for all of them. for most purposes, thess are all the tools you'll ever need. get used to programming them yourself, but also don't be ashamed of using presets!
find out how to make the sounds that are specific to your genre. the sound design, the tempos, chords, structures, common samples, everything
every major DAW also comes with a library of samples. loops, drum hits, etc. these probably suck, but they're enough to get you started. start building your own sample library, and keep it organized. you'll be collecting samples for as long as you stick with this hobby
make things! small things, big things, different styles, different plugins. see what works. i'd encourage you to finish a couple small projects first. like 30-60 seconds. they can be just loops, or a piece with an A section and a B section
learn and ask questions as you go. it will only get easier
be proud of what you make. don't put too much pressure on yourself to make something "professional." making music is fun! improving your skills is fun! make art for the sake of making art! i believe in you <3

Sometimes Nick wished he could feel things the way humans did.
He would have loved to be able to fully feel the way your fingers traces over his fake skin, feeling the torn off edges that exposed his inner machinery. His glowing yellow eyes followed your gaze as you took a closer look at his mechanical body. Rays of the morning sun shone through the cracks of the building, illuminating your partners figure only slightly.
"See anything you like?" The comment was sarcastic, a mere joke, but he saw the way your lips curled up into a small smile.
"And what if I do?" You asked teasingly, poking the detective's cheek, the material feeling like an artificial mockery of human skin.
"Then you're a hell of a lot stranger than the others I encountered out here. That in itself would be an achievement," Nick responded, allowing you to tilt his head slightly.
"Can't argue there," you replied. Stretching your limbs, you laid down against him, his arms encircling your torso. "So, got a case to solve today?"
Nick shook his head, his metal hand placed on your cheek, the cold material making you shiver.
"Figured I'd get some much needed alone time with you. Never really had to take a break before, but I figured there's a first time for everything." You cracked a smile at his words, playing with his tie.
"Just for me? I'm flattered," you teased back, gently tugging on his tie to pull him closer, placing a kiss on your cheek.
"Flattered by an old pile of metal, that's a new one." It was phrased like a joke, a sarcastic comment he had made so often before. But you could hear the hidden meaning between those words.
"Hey, you're my favorite old pile of metal, got that?" Nick let out a chuckle at your words, his hand sliding down to your elbow, pulling you in closer.
"You're too good for this world."
"What do you mean by that?"
"Not everyone is as open minded as you," Nick replied, looking through the small gaps in the structure that led to the outside. Wastelanders had left their home, going around their business in Diamond city as usual.
"Nick, we talked about this. I don't care about you being a synth."
"Yeah I... I know. I know you do, thanks."
You smiled at him, and he looked back at you, deep in thought. You could practically hear the gears turning in his head. There was a moment of silence before he quietly spoke again, his lips tugging upward slightly.
"I know you do..."
