Fur Tail PSA (Sort of)

So I’m going to start this post off by saying that I was horribly uneducated and I regret my decisions. I bought a tail for $20 at a con and I assumed that vendors were nice and would give care instructions for those buying real fur tails (idk what brought my faith in humanity up so high it’s back in the gutter), so I thought this $20 con tail would not be real.

Turns out it pretty much definitely is, and I am now pretty sad because I really don’t think it’s ethically sourced, purely based on the fact the seller barely said anything when they gave it to me. I was too excited to notice. Either way, if anyone could give me more information on what condition this tail is in and maybe what animal it comes from it would be greatly appreciated.

For anyone seeing this in the future:

Don’t buy a tail without researching or at least looking at it closely!!!

Here’s a few points I learned:

The top/base of a real tail is thinner than the middle

Tails sometimes have an opening at the top where you can see the leather or fabric the fur is attached to. If this is a thick leather then it is probably real

The fur pattern on real tails is often inconsistent, and each individual strand will likely be a different color. This isn’t a dead giveaway that it is real but a perfectly consistent pattern (if patterned) is probably fake.

If you can’t see the fabric at the top of the tail, see if you can look through the fur to see what it’s attached to. If you can get to the leather it’s attached to it’s either fake or in bad condition (I’m pretty sure). If it‘s attached to fabric or mesh then it’s fake.

Look at the fur itself while digging through it. Many real tails have a fluffier undercoat that is shorter than the layer at the top.

If the fur itself is shiny (especially an undyed tail) then it’s probably fake. Real fur is usually matte.

Real fur tails can be dyed!!

You have to have an eye for it, but apparently real fur tails move more fluidly than fake ones.

Real fur does not all move in the exact same direction. It still usually follows one flow, but it can be tilted a bit.

Price is apparently not an indicator and many unethical tail vendors will sell their real fur tails as faux fur tails.

i’m very sorry that society has made you feel this way about your fellow disabled people. i hope you can reflect on why you believe that other people with worse symptoms than you are bringing down this community and giving us a bad name.

(especially in the context of a vent post that is not indicative of whether or not we are “actually trying” in real life.)

i am also sorry that society makes you believe that in order for disabled people to be respected we have to consistently be working toward a nebulous goal of self improvement and overcoming of disability as to not be perceived as lazy and inconsiderate by the world.

i hope you can be kinder and more patient with yourself and your disability in the future, too.
