I'm generally on the same page as you; just wanted to clarify - by "incomparable to existing species" I don't mean "original species" (necessarily; some might still be included if they are strange enough). I mean genuinely difficult to compare / equivalate. If I can easily explain what the character (or species) looks like using existing creatures then that wouldn't really count as this category (ex. if I can say "looks like a really long cat with six legs" it wouldn't count). I wouldn't put sergals under this category because they're very much Any Other (anthropomorphized) Animal (and if you want to literally compare them, they're oft described as shark-like). It's meant to be a step up on the scale from "strange anatomy." Really pushing what can be described as an animal (/ furry).

Tho admittedly this scale is far from perfect. I struggled with categorizing things beyond what my own interpretation of the term is. Like, with the aforementioned category, there are many real life animals that are incredibly unique, so is there really anything that can't be described by comparing it to animals? As another example, there should probably be a step between "common add-ons" and "strange anatomy" I just couldn't figure out how to define / word it. (And of course in practice the "steps" aren't quite so neatly separate.) Point is I tried not to favor my own answer too much by cutting off the options at what I thought was obvious or logical, and as a result had to come up with things that I Didn't Really Get and therefore struggled to define and exemplify.

Ok because I keep thinking people are grossly misusing the term but maybe I'm in the minority -

(If people are interested I might make more nuanced/in depth polls, since there are many things that don't exactly fit on a straight "less weird to more weird" scale of this type, such as "object heads" "character has piercings and body mods" "hybrids" "art style makes an otherwise normal character weirdfur" "cyborgs" "uncommon species" "furrifying inanimate objects")

(Also, there seems to be two overlapping but generally distinct weirdfur communities, one that's about weird furries in terms of strange and unusual anthro characters and designs, and one that's about weird furries in terms of furries (i.e. the people in the fandom) who are into kink. Respect to the latter but this poll is about the former.)

Alright, I gotta know- what's your honest to true advise for drawing such good peoples? They're so stylized and expressive, I have ENVY. I've struggled to find my footing in humans for years!

First off, having come from a place of having a phobia of drawing humans at all in my teens, it REALLY means a lot to me that you think I draw "good peoples" QwQ

For advice, I think I would suggest consuming everything you can about Character Design and Shape Language. There are a lot of resources to look at, Youtube likely being the best one. I also suggest, if you watch videos, that it might be worth while to watch them more than once, to really take in more info. And/or come back to watch them again later.

Naturally, with all that's out there, you likely won't retain it all, and that's okay! Even all this time later, I still learn and relearn things about art and character design. I still have doubts about how distinct my characters are from each other. (Which is another reason I appreciate what you said. ;w;)

In short; Consume tutorials a lot, and don't worry if it doesn't stick right away~

my general interests are natural sciences (especially biology and biotech), language studies, photography (especially conceptual/surrealist/experimental genres) and, obviously, art (and, yes, i do unironically enjoy abstract/contemporary art and i can find more beauty in watching paint dry than it that hyperealistic painting of a person's face)

i am obsessed with technical/industrial things and machinery, as well as nature/biology, so, naturally, i love cyberpunk as a setting/idea. in general, the concept of natural and artificial being intertwined in their coexistence excites me to no end, as well as the ability to augment one's body as they see fit (the things i'd do to get my bad joints forever replaced with metal ahdhjenssk). aesthetics-wise, I'm also a sucker for vaporwave and webcore, because.... yes.

i am also interested in different religions/mythology and philosophical ideas (i find the human mind fascinating in general)

i love bright colors and stylized art and my music taste ranges from goreshit and listening to sorting algorhithms work to that one song everybody likes, you will NOT surprize me lol

i rarely participate in fandom culture but i currently obsess over Arcane. other shows i enjoy are Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul, Murder Drones, The Amazing Digital Circus, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Regular Show and probably some other stuff i can't think of right now

my fav games are too boring to list here but i love story-driven games, puzzles, text-based adventures and RPGmaker games. also simulators when i want my brain to shut up. actual games that i love dearly are Cyberpunk 2077, Kingdom Hearts series, Oblivion/Skyrim, Danganronpa, and some PSP era classics (i still play on PSP and want to buy an NDS, fite me)

i mostly draw my and my partner's OCs, so after/if my hyperfixation fades and jayvik finally lets my throat out of a chokehold, expect to see very little fanart :(

ALSO my partner is @schnoodleus <- pls check her out!!! she is a great artist, who has taught me MANY things and got me into digital art in the first place but DO BE AWARE THAT SHE POSTS NSFW WORKS!!!

So...I MAY have been collecting Fawfuls like pokemon cards <3

(and what the heck do I mean by that exactly??) WELL in a discord GC my friend Parmy suggested we’d imitate each other’s art styles as like a collab of sorts? Well...I kinda took that a step further heheh ^^

So may I present...the different Fawfuls I drew!! For my friends/cool acquaintances!

So the one who led up to this in the first place, Fawful from @parmsnik AU!! He is dating/eventually marrying Naspi depending on where you’re at in the AU haha! Your way of drawing Fawful seems to change a little bit each time you draw him, so I tried to my best to guestimate a consistent looking Fawf! Very cute!

Up next is Fawful from @the-spacewaffle AU!! Yippee Ronnie’s AU! Thanks for being my friend for so long,,to talk about Fawful and all that stuff y’know? I’ll be cheering you on to complete the story qwq your Fawful is always so nice to my OCs when we crossover khskdjh also...pet the Reddo!

Before you say anything YES I’m aware he’s got the new design since it’s near the end of the comic, you released the page that featured said new design while I was already working on this drawing xD So whoops! I just wanted to give appreciation to your comic series that you continued despite everything, and well...I know I haven’t shown much progress on it, I also want to make a comic series...so you’ve inspired me a lil :D

Deep down here there’s a little AU by @aliencatwafers which features Fawful in the sewers! With the little baby bros!! You’re a very insightful and inspiring writer with plenty of neat headcanons and ideas for the bean! Ik you mostly draw in pencil but I took the colors from your submissions to Fawful month this year and used em here! Hope it looks cool!

This little gremlin here with the two moms is Fawful from @bean-n-shroob ask blog! He looks very silly and unhinged (in a good way) and I hope he’s having a good time since after BIS! I love how round your designs are and Fawf is no exception :D

Last but not least is this VERY soft Fawful from @localdealmaker​ and their AU, whose title I made up too (again doesn’t need to be canon or anything if you don’t want it to be, I just wanted to give every drawing a cute name ^^) I think yours was the most complicated to draw for me but I love how he looks, so squish!! Kaboo is cute too!

Do you have any character design tips? I was thinking about making a Beanish OC and I think Jolligig has the actual best design ever so I felt like I would ask maybe..

I'm actually super flattered you'd ask me so YES I can try?? I think the biggest tip I would give for designing a Bean in particular is to remember that they are not just green-skinned humans. Hands down, that is the most common thing I see with Beanish ocs that I would advise against. Get humans out of your mind when you're designing a bean and get into a more 'toony creature' mindset.

Start by looking at the sprites in Superstar Saga and check out the Beanish people. They're not walking around with super complex hairstyles and even the few beans who do have hair keep it simple (and in Prince Peasley's case may even be wearing a wig LMAO) nor do they have very human-like facial features.

Most of them continue to look like BEANS in shape/body and when they do skew more human, their faces tend to be extremely stylized and amplified even for their world and in comparison with other races. Some have noses, some don't. Some have black dot eyes, some have more human-like eyes. You have SO many options.

I kept Jolligig's design simple and more like the regular town NPCs walking around because I wanted to make him stand out with other features like his hair and glasses vs facial shape and body type- but you may choose to do the opposite! I will just say it's good to stay modest to an extent when you're designing a character no matter how much you wanna go crazy and slap EVERYTHING YOU LOVE AT ONCE on them because it can end up overcomplicating the design, especially in the case of a character you're designing for a world like Super Mario.

Another question to ask yourself: would my OC be absolute hell to animate even doing the most basic of things? You don't have to be an animator imho to be able to answer this question. If he answer is yes, maybe consider simplifying their design further.

If you want inspiration to get weird and creative, check out the odd designs in the likes of a few of the shopkeepers and somebody like Harhall, for example. LIKE?? LOOK AT THESE:

There are absolutely ways you can have a TON of fun with a Beanish character that still keeps them within the bounds of what the game does.

I made an ENTIRE Twitter debate about what Anime Openings/Endings were HELLA slept on by Crunchyroll this year & honestly & truly 8)! ALL THESE SONGS WERE ROBBED. RIP WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN! But in my honest opinion. Based on all the judging criteria, honestly and truly I think Thunderbolt Fantasy 2 should win Ending of the Year.  It's hard to shake off bias sometimes but TBH "Roll the Dice" was the ED of the year to me. The big epic choruses in the bg of the lead vocals were on par with tenacity of Guren no Yumiya. But it's MORE impressive cuz it was just ONE man singin. Takanori has a godly range @A@/ And it wasn't JUST the vocals that pushed it to be the winner in my eyes, I enjoy when people do mixed media. So combining calligraphy, with puppetry & 2D HELLA detailed art replicas of said puppets? I can't overlook that creativity. I like when ppl think outside the box!<3 Thunderbolt Fantasy delivered on every single criteria. Creativity, Art Direction, Song Composition,Memorability, & Vocally Challenging Music. It's the whole package QwQ/ And the full version is even better. I think Takanori working with Hiroyuki Sawano was a match made in heaven. 

With that being said for the canon nominees for me its between FLCL Alternative cuz of the multimedia animation or Attack on Titan for the level of detail they did in the stylized storyboard.

so im pretty ridiculous and i keep falling for the MCs in voltage inc games as if they were like, not just eyeless blank slates but I just... a lot of them are weirdly moe yknow? ...yknow? q-q so here’s some more stylized designs of these eyeless blank slates that I adore

so yeah Our Two Bedroom Story’s MC is great she’s very loud (at least in Akiyoshi’s route) and very lowkey thirsty i dont know why i drew her with a tie, now that I’m looking at the CGs I don’t think she’s ever worn a tie maybe I just imagined it qwq

Kissed by the Baddest Bidder’s MC seems very stressed out some one help her i dont know what the hotel uniforms look like soOOO maid outfit OTL

After School Affairs’s MC is lowkey genki and I love it, she’s also a bit in a constant state of “how do I reeeach theeese kiiiiids”

In Your Arm’s Tonight’s MC seems so done with all this shit and I’m digging it I’ve only played Genji’s route though and I didn’t like him very much ;-; I hope Kippei’s route is good I’m here for the bossman type
