Oh, oh! Made up title: The Midsummer Incident

This could go either very bad or very harmless in my mind lmao and I haven't decided which instinct would win out so I took my time but--I think I finally have a definitive answer.

And it's... a short story? (wait, wait, stop throwing rotten fruit, it's wasteful! your plants want it!)

"Why do houses bleed?" Morkie—whose name on her birth certificate is Helen Camilla Lynch, but who has a particular set of ideas about whether real names are meant to be used or hidden because she's obsessed with faeries—asks.

I continue buttering the bread. "What do you mean?"

My tone is only curious. No matter their advanced vocabulary, five-year-olds are five-year-olds. Combine that with a fertile imagination, and I'm used to just about anything coming out of my child's mouth. Last week, it had been the deeply philosophical question of whether Santa pays his elves.

(I told her I wasn't sure, and that we could write to him at the end of the year to inquire about his business practices to make sure everything was on the up and up.)

Her attention is on the toast, eagle-eyed that I might screw up the butter-to-bread ratio, which would then throw off the marmalade ratio. "Mr. Barbie's house bled last night."

My head cocks to the side to glance out the kitchen window at the squat house across the street from us. Replicas of Italian statues dot his yard, including an exquisite copy of David that the real estate agent had tried to block with her car when she'd been giving us a house tour, not realizing that my daughter had seen more artistic nudes than most art critics by this point.

Mr. Barbie—Mr. Barberio, but again, due to fairy law, real names were something to be protected—had not been the most pleasant neighbor when we'd moved in late in the spring, but he'd warmed up to us after he discovered I was an artist. Digital, but I had my fondness for charcoal and paper, which had convinced him I wasn't a complete barbarian out to stomp on all things beautiful and true.

He was a spry old man, cagey about his age, with a shock of snow-white hair maintained with the precision of a mathematician's formula, slicked back as if to show off what a full head of it he had.

My husband, who's had a widow's peak since he was Morkie's age, had ruefully rubbed his thinning hair and said, "If you leave me for him, I'll know why."

"Mmn." With a flourish of my wrist to indicate a job well done, I slide the buttered toast onto Morkie's plate. "I can't say saw it happening. What did it look like?"

Morkie takes a bite of her toast and bluntly says, "Like blood."

Alright. Point to the smartass. I pull the closest sketchbook to me—I kept at least one in every room, not out of pragmatism but because I lose them and encounter them again like old friends—and start roughing out the shape of Mr. Barberio's house. "Where? And—hey, no butter fingers."

Morkie looks at her butter-slick hand as if it's betrayed her and pulls it back to hover an inch over the sketch. "Here, and here," she explains, pointing at the two upper windows that face the road.

I dutifully shade in those windows. "Like this?"

"Like crying, mommy." Morkie chomps on her toast, sounding exasperated that I'm not picking up what she's laying down. God, I'm going to miss her when she starts kindergarten in a month. Sassy little beast.

"That's a bit sad, isn't it?" I prod gently, pencil unmoving. The sketch remains as it is, the two windows dark. "Did it make you feel sad?"

Morkie nods. She's finished with the bread and is now dragging her sippy cup to her mouth. She can drink just fine out of a glass; she just likes to vary it up with a classic every once in a while.

"When did you see it?"

"When I was sleeping." Morkie sees no issue with this.

Ah. "Like in a dream?"

"Nope," she says, popping the "p" definitively.

I'm weighing whether to say anything at all because not everything needs an explanation when the sirens, muffled by the closed windows, register.

We live in a quiet neighborhood, deep in a maze of residential streets that simply end rather than looping back into the arteries of the city. So any emergency services hauling ass with all lights on aren't simply passing through; this is their destination.

We watch silently as the ambulance stops in front of Mr. Barberio's house.

7: gosh this is embarrassing. I think that the first fic I ever planned to write was a self-insert about a beautiful Teleri from Valinor with whom Frodo Baggins fell in love after he sailed for the west (I had SUCH a crush on Elijah Wood. I honest to god sent him an handwritten letter asking him to marry me when I grew up. I was TWELWE); I suppose Frodo and I were going to defeat the darkness of Morgoth once and for all with the power of love and my mighty sword lol. Unfortunately I never got to write this masterpiece.

The first fic I actually wrote (I was fourteen, and still traumatized after seeing rots in theatre) was an Obidala post rots au - they moved to Tatooine, Padmé of course turned out to be Force Sensitive, Obi-Wan trained her and she fought masked in silver until the day Vader tracked them down, cue to masks cracking and angst ensuing and then I stopped writing because at fourteen I didn't know that threesomes were a thing and I had no idea how to finish that story without killing Anakin off, which I didn't want to do (always been weak for pretty boys with huge blue eyes)

10: usually I know the title as soon as I start writing because 70% of the time my plot bunnies jump out of a song, which promptly becomes the title, and for the remaining 30% the title is directly connected to the plot. The only notable exception is Neutron Star Collision, which originally had a title I didn't like, but then one day spotify played the song and I IMMEDIATELY logged onto AO3 to rename the story because it was just perfect

Is there a fic concept you have that you’d like to just explain and share because you’re not sure you’ll ever write it? If so, what is it?

I'm going to try and write everything I've got planned, but currently I'm struggling to find the tone for a fic I want to write this cyberpunk meets eldritch horror oneshot. Basically, Obi-Wan is a private detective asked to investigate the death of Padme Amidala, a renowned artist who became reclusive over the last few months leading up to her death. Through his investigation, Obi-Wan discovers that she used a data chip infected with the murmurs of an ancient alien god who demanded her worship and adoration - for eternity.

Of course, the god is Anakin/Vader, an alien creature made up of flesh and technology who lay dormant on some planet before researches awakened him. He is in search of supplicants who will meld with him so that he may never be lonely as he travels the vastness of space.

I've got it mostly planned out, but I've not been in the right mood to write it just yet.

I also want to work on a fic where Vader turns himself in at the end of the Kenobi show. But that is going to involve a lot more planning, and grappling with the idea of 'can someone such as Vader be redeemed' and 'should he be allowed to be redeemed', and who gets a say in all of that?

Dofcora nation today I discovered a Google doc from a long time ago of WIPs i had about them that I somehow managed to COMPLETELY forget about, and I have no idea HOW these ideas completely slipped from my mind because they are as wild as:

- a fuck or die trope. How the hell did I forget about this one. some enemy devil fruit users manage to orchestrate this situation thinking ha, they can't get out of this because they're brothers so they won't fuck and they'll die but surprise surprise....

- voyeurism on the numancia ???? some random crewmember has the misfortune of finding out that the brothers are not very Brotherly but, also, they are kind of into it because they read too much porn ig, and my absolute favourite:

- cora and doffy's STRING PUPPET. YES, HE USES THE STRING PUPPET. (this was gonna be a gift for @sugarpsalms psst if you remember 👀 but we both got busy, so!)

I genuinely have no idea how I forgot these wip ideas. Like, I didn't even remember them when I was doing the WIP tagging game! Insane. Insane. Doffy, depending on their history or lack of it, and it also depends whether this is Never Left Mariejois Doffy or Came Back and was Accepted Back Celestial Doffy. Those two are vastly different 🤣 I want to write a naive Reader but also Reader who is aware enough of how CRAZY Celestial Dragons are but then you get to that fear/dread factor once more and deciding how much of that to describe bcs what if they’re childhood friends, would that fear factor burst its head out regardless of their history? Would Reader just be appeasing Doffy while also still letting her guard down and just interacting with him like nothing’s changed?

(Sighs) I am overthinking myb a bit too much? Who knows...

Time travel swapped AU What the title says. Time travelling Law & Heart Pirates meet little Doffy & Cora. He adopts them takes them in in a heartbeat, though warming up to Doflamingo is a very very slow process. Snippets.

DR st A folder with a bunch of wips for the I've seen you fic. Doflamingo finds slave Rosinante in the Human Auctioning House on Sabaody. He takes care of him and basically decides to wage war on the whole slave market. Cora & Doffy & Donquixote Family, rated T for the topic it circles around, multi-chap + series.

DR - Ghibli - Sen to Chihiro Doffy & Cora x Spirited Away crossover. The brothers are tossed into the Spirit Realm and meet Yubaba sisters. Oneshot.

KSxDR - prologue Not a prologue anymore xd A wip document for the Through the End fic. Doffy & Cora x Blood Blockade Battlefront crossover, multi-chap.

A Battle of Will Corazón-centered, CoraFest wip, multi-chap. Corazón, for some reason, tries to quit smoking, this time for good. The Family has a lot of fun with this.

Pralnia Tsuru - spinoff (translation: Tsuru's Laundry Room - spinoff) Tsuru & Cora & Doffy fic, centered around and exploring Tsuru’s powers, how they can affect people and possibly change DQ brothers’ story. Two chapters, the first one focused on Tsuru and Corazón, the second one on Tsuru’s powers and Doflamingo.

The Princess Bride by William Goldman if you want a gentle, humorous, fantasy reading. (recommended for fans of 80s/90s fantasy films)

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller if you want to have a good time with absurdist comedy that then destroys you :] (recommended for fans of MASH that didn't hate the finale)

Summer of Night by Dan Simmons for Kids In A Horror Situation Doing Something About It (recommended for fans of It and Stranger Things.)

A book that I couldn't put down: I generally read books in one sitting. So most of them?

A book I've read twice or more: I reread books consistently. If it's out somewhere I can reach for it, I'll just start reading it again. But uhhh the Chronicles of Narnia? Definitely reread those a lot.

A book on my TBR: Sabriel by Garth Nix.

A book I've put down: Not too many, but I definitely have. I forget them pretty quickly.

A book on my wish list: Once upon a time I would have said Strange Fate by L.J Smith. For the wee me that waited 20+ years for it, if it ever does come out, I'll absolutely read it. Just not excited for it anymore.

A favorite book from childhood: A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. One of the rare occasions I love the book and the movie equally.

A book you would give to a friend: INDECISION PARALYSIS AHOY. I dunno, honestly. All my friends are very different people. No one book fits all.

a non-fiction book you own: Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg.

What are you currently reading: Don't Look Now by Daphne du Maurier. I'm always surprised that she was such a modern writer.

What are you planning on reading next? Either The Broken Girls by Simone St. James or Burn for Me by Ilona Adrews. (Yes, friend, FINALLY) Maybe also a reread of Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, but in english, this time. First and last time I read it I was 8. Probably due for a revisit.

in this not-quite-canon divergence au, shanks visits the entertainment hub run by cross guild and finds himself captivated by the star of the show, a mysterious woman called blue diamond, who reminds him of someone he loved and lost a long time ago… there are powerful romance novel vibes here, and i’m a sucker for mistaken identity/disguise shenanigans as a trope, so there was no way i wasn’t going to enjoy this fic.

Love Lies Bleeding. by JustAnotherFool - complete, 12k

a five+one times (plus an epilogue) hanahaki fic. another one where i adore the trope so i was sure to enjoy it, but chronic/long term hanahaki is a particular favorite. of course buggy would pretend he wasn’t pining after shanks for decades! he’s stubborn that way!

We Swear by Rote For Want of More by sugarpsalms - series in progress, 12k, occasionally explicit

a series in which buggy and shanks are romantically involved while each captains his own ship in east blue, and mihawk is involved with both of them too. this author really knows ships and sailing and that comes across very clearly in their prose, i’m always impressed by those tiny details. the relationship is just this side of dysfunctional, as i think should be expected with pre-canon/post-roguetown shuggy—or with buggy in general, lmao—but most of the stories are quite sweet despite that.

26. Would you rather write a fic that had no dialogue or one that was only dialogue?

No dialogue, for sure. But I think only dialogue would be a challenge that I'd like to try at least once. I was debating doing a kinktober fill of just obikin sexting...

34. What aspects of your writing are inspired by/taken from your real life?:

Oof. A lot of the physical pain. I've been through... stuff over the years, and have experienced a wide range of weird things, painful things, uncomfortable things, etc. So I draw a lot from my own experiences when writing about say, someone having a migraine, or someone fainting and having a seizure-type fit, or the pain of breaking bones, etc. And with that, the psychological stuff that goes with being in pain, or having a disability, or living in a constant state of discomfort. I dunno if it comes across well in my writing, but it definitely comes from a place of first-hand experience!

I've been fortunate enough to travel to a bunch of different places in the world, so when I write about the settings of places I also try and draw from what I remember when I say, visited and spent time in Egypt in the desert, or the forests around Crete, or the muggy air in Rome.

And, of course, Moonlight Serenade was influenced by my work and the artefacts I work with, and the stories I encounter 😊
