i've discussed previously that there could be a number of reasons shanks' reaction to the roguetown fight with buggy is obscured/hidden from us, but these panels… really did not need to be arranged this way?? like, i agree with goingbuggyy, it definitely feels like an intentional artistic choice and one that must have been a pita to adapt to the anime.

At Shatner Q&A and he was asked for a story about time on the Star Trek set, which started a story about him gaslighting De:

They filmed really late, and one shoot at 2 am, Deforest told Bill he’d been worried about his memory lately and thought he might be starting to lose it. Of course, Bill decides to fuck with him the next morning at breakfast.

De fixes himself a bagel (first mistake, cause Bill thinks it’s funny that he’s not eating grits cause he’s a ‘southern gentleman’) and after De presses it down in the toaster, Bill asks Leonard to go distract him. Leonard pulls De to the side, saying somethings in his eyes, and while they’re gone Bill steals the bagel out of the toaster, shoves it in his pocket, and puts the toaster back down. Bill sends Leonard to distract him again, but no longer has a pocket for this bagel and shoves it in his mouth to eat it. De comes back, toaster pops, no bagel. Then he starts to get pissed off, and he whips around in time to catch Bill furiously trying to eat his bagel in time, and shouts,

Amanda's line in TOS about how the Vulcan way of life is better than the Human one and the fact that she consented to raising Spock as entirely Vulcan hints towards a very strange and interesting woman that I wish would be portrayed/explored instead of the way I normally see her in adaptations which is...Slightly Sad Perfect Mother Figure. Good Woman. Good Emotions Woman to balance out Sarek. Like, to me, these things (the line and how Spock was raised to be ashamed of his Humanity) paint the picture of Amanda going up to Sarek and being like...in the midst of all these Humans he interacts with daily, so singular and interesting because of her outpouring of appreciation for the Vulcan way of life. And maybe Sarek and her speak about it and he finds himself fascinated by this woman and that mix of mutual interest becomes affection becomes love. And then these two freaks put their heads together at a certain point down the road of their marriage and Sarek says y'know Amanda it's SO cool what we're doing here but I think you've pretty much got this Vulcan thing as down as you're going to. You're a marvel and you leave me in awe every day, with the way you were raised entirely Human I don't think anyone else has achieved what you have. But you know what'd be so fucking sick? Let's see if we can raise a child that's half you and half me, a symbol of our bond and our hopes for the future of mankind (that they conquer their emotions and follow a logical path). Let's see how THAT kid handles it. It's fine to have kids that're half science experiment half symbol of the future, right? That won't fuck them up? And Amanda says YEEESSS I'd fucking LOVE to do that with you Sarek. I love you so much. And you know, Amanda is a rather enigmatic character. Why she does what she does, what she wants, how she feels about Spock and Vulcans - they're largely up to interpretation since the episode she appears in becomes very high stress very quickly and people don't always act in line with how they normally do when under that kind of life-or-death pressure BUT what I think is a point of tragedy in Spock and Amanda's relationship isn't that Spock couldn't be Human enough but that these two people couldn't bond about having emotions yet following the Vulcan path. They both view the Vulcan path as being difficult but worth it to follow. It's the path they both chose for themselves, ultimately. Imagine how much sooner Spock may have been able to accept himself wholly if he'd felt able to confide in his mother about a feeling she probably would have understood completely in a way Sarek couldn't - being Human yet alien yet Vulcan. Amanda chose to live with Sarek on Vulcan. Did she feel at home with Humans? Does she feel at home with Vulcans? Or does she exist in the same liminal space her son does? Not Human enough, not Vulcan enough. It's so interesting that Amanda Grayson is a Human being, a Human woman (which would've been especially noteworthy in the TOS' gender politics era) who can be interpreted as having in essence consciously forsaken her Humanity and encouraged her son to do the same. To what end? Was that for love or was it something she'd done before meeting Sarek? Was it lonely? When Spock allows himself to smile very slightly at something, does he look in the mirror and remember his mother's face? Maybe he does and maybe at first he's ashamed. But then he's an old man and it only brings him peace, a tether to a woman he could never really connect to in life.

Could you please tell me what software you use to draw and how you get the fuzzy texture effect? Thank you!!

Thank you so much! I use Clip Studio Paint! As for the fuzzy effect, I assume it's the one I use for literally everything from backgrounds, to sprites and objects in Mushroom Oasis' game art haha.

It's actually a Black and White Static brush on very low opacity with the Overlay blending mode! My friend taught it to me years ago, and I've been obsessed with applying it to everything since tbh haha.

I'll use a Vida sprite to explain:

Here's what the brush looks like when on a bigger size. It's about 300px on the canvas I'm using:

Here's what it should look like when I wanna apply the effect:

Notice how if you look really closely, the pattern is duplicating. That's because I made the brush really small, made one big blob and copy-pasted it over and over on the canvas until I end up with one big block. Don't worry about it because it's hardly noticeable when applied to an image.

You can adjust the size to however you'd like, but I prefer it soft and subtle.

Next is application; here's a finished Vida sprite without the static effect. I've highlighted the Black and White Static layer in green so you can ignore the rest. It's currently toggled off.

With it on, you can already see the applied effect with Overlay.

Then it's just a matter of clipping it and lowering it to the desired opacity! My go to is between 20-30% but feel free to experiment!

The final result is a fine fuzzy texture, and it does affect the colors just a bit, but it's usually no problem for me and I personally like how subdued and muted softly it looks at the end.

Shanks loving to tease buggy is so perfect because it could backfire so easily once buggy (obviously completely on accident and he doesn’t mean it) says something vulnerable and extremely lovable

Shanks leaned back on his hands, watching Buggy really stoke himself into a rage. His face got so red when he got mad… it was almost too much to bear.

“—absolute idiot, Shanks!!” Buggy spun around—well, kind of. His feet weren’t moving, but his upper body was pacing a tight circle in front of Shanks, arms locked behind his back (probably because they’d fly every which way if he didn’t hold them in place; Mr. Rayleigh had lectured him about not losing track of his body parts, but it was all still pretty new). “And another thi—oh, what now?”

“Huh?” Shanks looked down at himself, not seeing anything incriminating. Buggy was glaring at him pretty hard, though, so there must be something. A hand lifted to his face revealed that Shanks was grinning. He hadn’t realized. Shanks did his best to get his face under control. “Sorry, Buggy. What were you saying?”

Buggy flushed a darker red—oh, unfair, now his cheeks were nearly as dark as his nose! “You weren’t even listening, were you?!”

Shanks shrugged.

Buggy groaned, pinching at the bridge of his nose. “You’re impossible. And what was so funny, anyway?”

Oh, too easy. “You.”

Buggy let out a frustrated screech. “Excuse me?!”

“The way you flush when you get mad,” Shanks said, laughing a little at the baffled look on Buggy’s face. “Your whole face gets as red as your nose, it’s like you’re a tomato ripening at super speed.”

“Whose nose is as red and round as a tomato?!!” Buggy snapped.

Shanks blinked. “Yours, I just said so.”

Buggy yelled, a wordless cry, and stormed off, his shoulders trembling. Seemed like Shanks had pushed him pretty far. Hm… to push further, or to let it go? Shanks looked at Buggy’s ears, the only visible part of his face at this angle, a vivid red at the tips, and knew himself well enough to know what he had to do.

He leaned back on his hands again, putting on the casual affect he knew riled Buggy up something fierce. “Something I said?”

Buggy froze mid-step.

“I like tomatoes, you know.”

And before Shanks could blink, Buggy was in his face, hands dug into the collar of his shirt, pulling him close enough to count Buggy’s eyelashes… which were wet.

Oh, no.

“Do you?” Buggy asked, voice trembling, but with barely suppressed tears, not the rage Shanks had been expecting. “Do you like my stupid red tomato nose and my embarrassing red tomato face?? Huh?!”

Oh no. Shanks froze. He was totally screwed. If he told the truth, Buggy would think he was just teasing him more, like an absolute ass. If he lied, it would hurt Buggy’s feelings… more than he already had. And if he tried to defuse the situation, Buggy would think he pitied him, which would be worse than either of the other options by far.

Was there a fourth option? Could he prevent this moment from becoming a complete disaster?

“I…”

“Well?” Buggy spat, leaning in so close their noses touched.

There was one other thing Shanks could do… it might backfire on him, even worse than the others, but there was a small chance things would turn out for the better. All he had to do was tell the truth, and act on it before Buggy could blow up at him about it.

“I…”

Actually, maybe he should reverse those steps. Buggy could be real fast about blowing up at you if he had a mind to.

Decided, Shanks angled his head and leaned in.

Buggy’s lips were chapped and warm… and wet, and a little salty. Not to mention stiff as a board. Maybe this hadn’t been Shanks’ best idea ever. He pulled back, licking his lips reflexively, and opened his eyes to look at Buggy.

He was gaping at Shanks, wide-eyed, dumbstruck.

Shanks rubbed a hand over the back of his neck. “I do, actually. A lot.”

A strangled little squawk came out of Buggy’s mouth; he let go of Shanks’ shirt to slap his hands over it, and, still staring at Shanks, fled.

Once alone, Shanks sighed, and pressed a hand to his mouth. Definitely not his best idea, but… he smiled. Not something he regretted, either.
