I'm currently reading it and -keep in mind that I'm still around page 40- this is really Tom coded! I don't know, the protagonist and this guy called Joey remind me of Tom and Beverly! I still have to catch up with a few chapters of your story, but ISTFG I started reading this book and there's this guy watching the sea? The river? Some water? Out the window while also watching his reflection in the middle of the night while thinking about his ex boyfriend and ex girlfriend etc etc and idk it felt like it was Tom right after the scene at the lake where he and Beverly split up. It felt like Tom stayed there while Bev walked away and he watched the lake as he was thinking about his life and his relationship

Now, I'm well aware of the fact that being told 'omg your characters remind me of [insert other character from another book]' can be a really diminishing thing as a writer, but I didn't mean it like that. I actually meant it in a good way! I had such a metaphysical experience here. Like a MAJOR crossover!! Now I'll go catch up with my fav gays cuz I need this crossover wave to keep going!!!!!

Viaggio in Cina, via fb

Di ritorno dal nostro ultimo viaggio in Cina dall'8 al 19 luglio, vi lascio qui qualche scatto e do qualche spunto per chi volesse organizzare in autonomia:

Itinerario: abbiamo fatto 10 giorni interi tra Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou e Pechino. Il tempo è stato sufficiente ma considerate che abbiamo quasi sempre camminato tra i 15 e i 20km al giorno nonostante ci muovessimo in metro e taxi

Periodo: l'estate non è il periodo migliore, ma il caldo si può gestire. Più afoso a Shanghai e Hangzhou, Pechino invece caldo ma secco e secondo me anche più gestibile del caldo in Italia. Mettete in conto che può piovere, magari a sprazzi, ma a volte viene anche molto forte

Internet: mia moglie ha usato l'esim di holafly, perfetta in tutti i posti che abbiamo visitato. Io invece ho fatto l'estensione per la Cina di Windtre a 30 euro per 10 giga e sono andato alla grande ovunque, SENZA bisogno di VPN. Finché siete in roaming il firewall lo bypassate, con qualsiasi sim italiana di qualsiasi gestore.

Spostamenti: tutto in treno, efficientissimo come in Giappone. I biglietti li abbiamo comprati in anticipo su trip.com. Considerate che alla stazione del treno funziona come per un aeroporto, metaldetector in ingresso e controlli vari del passaporto. Il passaporto è il vostro biglietto, non vi serve altro. Al gate mettetevi in fila dove c'è l'operatore che controlla il passaporto agli stranieri e il gioco è fatto

Pagamenti: non vi servono i contanti, ma se associate una carta di credito o debito su Alipay siete apposto per tutto (noi avevamo Wise e Revolut). Tenete conto che se fate l'autenticazione con passaporto, Alipay vi eroga gratis anche i qrcode per le metro di ogni città, che sono praticissimi. Passate il qr code al lettore ottico al tornello in ingresso e uscita e siete apposto.

Spostamenti in città: come vi dicevo, o metro o didi (che è l'equivalente di Uber cinese). Lo chiamate direttamente dall'app integrata in Alipay. I prezzi sono convenientissimi, una corsa di 20 minuti in auto la pagate 3-4 euro, una corsa in metro tra i 20 e 40 centesimi.

Costo del viaggio: per questo itinerario organizzato in autonomia, abbiamo speso 2100 euro a testa tutto incluso (voli, hotel, cibo, ingressi, mezzi di trasporto e anche souvenir)

Ulteriori info: in estate il turismo cinese è ai massimi, aspettatevi tanta folla ovunque. Cercate di evitare i tour di gruppo che partono tutti attorno alle 10 del mattino, orario dopo cui, specie a Pechino diventa una marea umana. Abituatevi al fatto che i cinesi scatarrano e vi salteranno in fila. Ad ogni modo, questo viaggio, almeno per il nostro itinerario, ci ha fatto capire quanto preconcetto c'è in Italia sulla Cina: le città sono pulitissime, non esiste accattonaggio nelle metro o nelle stazioni, potete girare in completa tranquillità a qualsiasi ora del giorno. Troverete tante telecamere e tanta polizia, ma appunto, per un turista è un punto di forza per girare tranquillo. In conclusione, viaggio super raccomandato, con la speranza di poterci tornare presto per vedere altre zone di questo meraviglioso paese 🇨🇳

Hi, you're the most classical civilization-y person I know, and I was wondering if you knew anything about The Assassination of Julius Caesar by Michael Parenti, which I'm reading rn. The gist of it is that the popular image held by many (including most Tumblrinas) of Caesar as a "tyrant" is wrong, or at least distorted by the classist nature of contemporary historians, and that Caesar was actually killed by senators angry at his pro-lower class reforms, such as cancelling debts, redistributing land, etc. Is this a popular perspective on the classic civilization perspective of Tumblr?

I haven't read the book in full but I am familiar with it since it was a scholarship for Julius Caesar's political position. It certainly challenges the classism within traditional classical viewpoints and offers some nuance into the 'Caesar is a tyrant' argument but it focuses too much on the economic/class factors imo.

It's helpful to know key contexts of Roman culture when discussing J.C's assasination. What you need to know is that the Roman Republic was never truly a Republic, especially towards the latter half. To even have a position within the Senate, you had to have a certain amount of wealth (an absurd amount, basically the equivalent of a millionare today on average). So senators basically voted and made policies in the interest of a) their wealth and b) their own political power. The Senate was also split into the optimates and the populares. The optimates were much more conservative and typically won votes through bribery since they were mostly from generational wealth. The populares were more open to change and Julius Caesar, as one of them, did ensure that there was improvement to the poor's life. However, that's not to say that it's out of the goodness of his heart. While the optimates got their votes from bribery, the populares got votes by entertaining the masses a.k.a panem et circenses (bread and circuses). Julius Caesar managed to grow in power because he had great military victories (which brought wealth to Rome and therefore the poor), was popular among the poor, and had the loyalty of his soldiers. To maintain that popularity, he redistributed senatorial land to his soldiers, encouraged class reform, gave money and food to the poor, all of which pissed off the optimates. In fact, previous politicians who had similar policies were killed by lynch mobs or other senators' armies (e.g the Gracchi). So yes, that was a major factor in the assassination.

But what is also important is Roman values itself. The Romans HatedTM monarchy. They hated a one-man rule because a core part of their cultural heritage was having overthrown a king. Having lots and lots of power and being an oligarch was fine in Rome. Lots of other people did it before Caesar. Sulla and Marius had a civil war (which Caesar himself lived through) and Sulla basically seized ultimate power in all but name. What really made the optimates hate Caesar though was that he had control of lots of land outside of Rome due to his conquests in Gaul and therefore had a massive army and power. He was also part of the First Triumvirate alongside Crassus and Pompey, and the three of them had almost total control over Roman politics. Crassus was the rich one for bribes, funding, ect. Pompey was the warlord. Caesar was the more public face of the three. On top of that, the alliance eventually broke down into a civil war between Caesar and Pompey, which threw Rome into even more political instability. Caesar also broke an important rule in the process by bringing his army into Rome by crossing the Rubicon, which added to his image as a powerhungry politician. Needless to say, the Senate was not happy.

There were also other transgressions of Roman social codes. He took Cleopatra as a lover despite her being a powerful, foreign queen (monarchy association). Caesar stepped on some toes by putting a gold statue of Cleopatra in the temple of Venus Genetrix. Obviously, monarchy association again. But it's also a vulgar display of luxuria (Roman concept of indulgence in wealth which they viewed as barbaric. You can be rich, you just can't show it off and indulge yourself) as well as sacrilege since Venus was one of the founding gods of Rome.

The final straw was when Caesar announced himself dictator perpetuus - dictator in perpetuity. Being a dictator wasn't a bad thing. It was just the term for someone given ultimate power for 6 months when Rome faces national crisis (from invasions to natural disasters, the post exists so decisions can be made quickly without vote). The problem lies with the fact that he would be dictator in perpetuity. Rome can't be in crisis forever. Why would you want ultimate power forever if you weren't trying to fashion yourself as a tyrant king? All of this led to his assassination on the Ides of March.

Of course, assassinating him didn't actually bring back the Republic. That thing had been dead from the moment it was conceived and only existed as a farce of democracy. What Caesar's death led to was a power vacuum and plenty of scrambling political wannabes. This led to three more civil wars (or four if you count the war with Sextus Pompeius) ending with Octavian/Augustus Caesar on top. Augustus then went on to create the Imperial system of rule while pretending it was a Republic (so not much of a difference from the poor's perspective tbh apart from maybe stricter moral laws and new aqueducts).

In summary, there's lots of different views on this. Some people think Julius Caesar was an actual tyrant who had it coming. Some think it was because the Senate didn't like the fact he tried to take ultimate power and left them with none. Some think it's because the Roman elite hated the poor. Some think it's a mixture. I've tried to be as hollistic as I could in this explanation so I hope this helps!

Ho appena visto due video: uno di una che chiama una gattino per strada, quello viene e dopo qualche carezza la ragazza si prende il gatto. E il secondo video è di un cosplay di kitsune Dazai. Ed è qui che mi miei due neuroni si sono collegati.

Immagina di andare in un tempio lontano dalla città, abbandonato ma in condizioni abbastanza decenti per essere un tempio frequentato forse una volta all'anno.

Vai in giro tranquilla a vederlo e fare anche qualche preghiera. Quando all'improvviso vedi una volpe bianca che ti guarda. È piuttosto insolito trovare una volpe bianca da queste parte, soprattutto quando ha delle sfumature azzurrine sulla cosa e sulle orecchie. Sembra anche piuttosto amichevole anche per essere un animale selvatico, forse ha già avuto a che fare con gli esseri umani.

Provi tranquillamente ad avvicinarti e la volpe non si muove. Ti abbasi e lentamente e la chiami come se fosse un gatto, e la volpe si avvicina! Lentamente si avvicina e ti annusa la mano.

Non ci mette tanto a strofinare la testa sulla tua mano per delle coccole, è così amichevole e carina, è un peccato lasciarla qui, non contando il fatto che è abbastanza visibile da possibili predatori. Quindi perché non usare queste scuse per portarlela a casa?

like, there's Sulla, but Crassus also did a lot of that of his own accord, and Sulla shut the door on him politically so Crassus climbed in through a window and worked a different aspect of Roman society-politics with magnificent skill. he ALSO skips the dog allegations because if anyone is bringing someone to heel, it's Crassus doing it to other people. there isn't a specific person that Crassus' actions can be dedicated to in a way that makes me think of a dog the way Agrippa's actions for Octavian do.

I also don't think he's feral! what he is: really fucking ruthless, or has the potential for ruthlessness, which isn't the same thing to me as being feral. and being ruthless is not uncommon for Late Republic politics

On the mission to eliminate V.III O'Keeffe, ALLMIND explains that the release project requires an "exceptional" augmented human, and flashes up a list of members of the first four generations, with four ID codes highlighted.

One of these is, of course, C4-621.

The gen 1 is C1-249, which Walter gives as Sulla's ID. ALLMIND has presumably been backing Sulla for a while, deploying him to frustrate Walter (and thus Overseer) given his battle dialogue. The glitchiness of Sulla's arena fight vaguely hints towards the link, but it's more solidly confirmed by the Ghosts deploying to support Sulla in NG++. At that time ALLMIND is interested in you, but hasn't confirmed your usefulness and your support.

The other gen 4 is presumably Iguazu. He's able to "hear" Ayre while in the vicinity of 621, and ALLMIND was able to salvage his consciousness to upload into an Institute C-weapon, suggesting his Coral affinity. (Though I'm not entirely sure why ALLMIND decided to keep a hater around and let him have a shot at killing their "key". It feels a little contrived for the sake of a dramatic showdown at the end.)

No idea who the gen 3 is, though it can't be O'Keeffe — this same briefing tells us that he's a gen 2, and the Arena profile says he was later updated to gen 9 augmentations. And Kate is likely ALLMIND's mercsona rather than a real person.
