Sunday Soapbox Entry #1

My boyfriend (after two months of dating) came to me and told me he had been called to preach. It wasn't a new concept to me as my family was filled with many preachers, however, I never really understood the amount of strength their wives had until I was in their shoes. I was told by many people that I should run away because I would have to deal with a lot of hardships and stress, but this is what I have told every single person who has ever told me to end it : “ I know I love him so I’ll support him through anything, I just wish there was more I could do to help him from day to day.” Many couples today see hardships and they are ready to throw in the towel but that’s not how it is with me and my Prince Charming. We have been through a lot in just 6 months of dating. We have seen each other at our lowest points and we have hit obstacles that I know have broken up others.So, this Sunday Soapbox is telling you don’t give up on that person who is the love of your life- if you truly love them and can’t fathom the idea of losing them- fix the problem. Be prepared for the worst so you are able to break down the obstacles as a team - not by yourself. I hope someone gained something in this post. Happy Sunday everyone! - hb13

"It's easier to program a bunch of shit than it is to focus on quality coaching." - L2 Takeaway. From Learning To Wisdom. My foray into the #Crossfit Level 2 Trainer Course ended today. And, during the course, I was reminded why I was originally drawn to the methodology. Simply: It requires you to do hard things. Yet, few aspects of life demand our best anymore. In our modern "Bernie Sanders" world filled with free shit loving, there's a pill for that, I'm not responsible for myself general public... we see this echoed repeatedly in mind, body, and craft. Why? Because humans are incentive based creatures who move when they have to. If you find yourself with all needs and most wants met, its difficult to expand past that "I've done enough" mentality. But there's always a next level. Going there requires expansion... deliberately placing yourself in difficult or vulnerable situations that require you to expand. There you find new incentives, new purpose, and you move accordingly... success or failure is irrelevant. Its about who you become along the way. Having seen a glimpse of true quality coaching this weekend, coupled with honest feedback, and coaches driven to create excellence in others, I am humbled and grateful. We can all go deeper with our knowledge and skills of even the most basic elements of our lives and craft to mine wisdom we can use to elevate those around us. // Give It Away. Steve Prefontaine once said, “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift". That is spot on. We all know the #truth of gift #giving... the more thoughtful the gift, the greater the appreciation. The #sacrifice is in the time taken to choose something with care, not in the thing itself. This weekend, we #hiked to the #Hotshots 19 Fatality Site... and got a healthy dose of what sacrifice looked like. Sitting there... in a valley surrounded by steep, rocky hills on all sides but one, I can only imagine the thoughts they had as their escape was blocked. They were #fighting to keep Yarnell, AZ whole... and #paid the ultimate price. I didn't have anything to give in their honor... not really. But I remembered my arm band. It's not expensive or valuable to anyone else... but I haven't taken it off in 7 years because the HardWodder brand and ethos of #hardwork and excellence mean everything to me. I wear the band to as a reminder that the #dothehardthing life I have #committed myself to, is the same one in which I must live my values for all to see. Otherwise, my words are empty. These guys are the embodiment of living into your word. They had a motto "to be, rather than to seem" is exactly what we need more of. They became the men they claimed to be in sacrifice to the safety of others. And for that reason, my 7 year commitment to my band was broken... it was the most valuable thing I had to give at that moment. United In Wellness. "Give all you have... for all you want." - J. Archer. It's not easy or even obvious how to overcome the deluge of "get fit quick" or "abs in a bottle" thinking so prevalent in today's world. Generally, It's all lies. There is a reason we admire the fit, the strong, or the successful... it's because deep down in places you don't like to talk about at parties, you know the truth. That these people work their asses off to get to the next level. They do what others talk about doing. No B.S. or self inflicted obstacles or stories stop them. "Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."- Pablo Picasso. Talented. For me, food is first and foremost fuel. Some greens, some protein, and basics like salt and pepper and I'm a happy camper. But for my Queen, #food is art. It's hard to imagine canned tuna looking picture worthy, yet in the right hands, it very well might. Her hands are those hands. She makes her #artform with pretty much anything you can throw at her... and though she may complain when top shelf ingredients are lacking, she'll eventually settle in and pull something tasty from the ether. My skills lie elsewhere... as may yours. Notice the word choice here. #Skilled is used rather than talented. Talent exists, but #effort counts to a higher degree. Over the course of her life, the Queen has literally put in thousands of #reps in the kitchen. Whatever talent she may have has been augmented by her experience and effort over time. People use the word, talented, to describe those who seem to easily produce #results others don't. They'll say Jerry Rice or Steve Young were talented football players, yet the #truth is both men worked their asses off over a long period of time to develop their skills. You didn't see the #effort. You just saw the results. Granted, certain people are geared toward certain endeavors... you'll have a hard time in #basketball if you're 5 feet tall. Still, at 5' 7" Spud Webb played professionally and won the slam dunk contest in '86. Was he talented? Sure, but so were thousands of other men who were taller. What was the difference?
