[if they took one glance up and the clock said eleven— they were going to have a heart attack.] they needed coffee. and possibly a bump. but one problem to solve at a time. hastily making their way into the student union's jitter-bean, it doesn't take a magazine or television to recognize the yellow and white cladded woman in front of them. starlight! [they'd be more surprised if they hadn't seen her a mere ten minutes ago from the back of a crimefighting lecture hall.]

“my parents are paying seventy-seven thousand dollars a semester for me to listen to you— a non-alumni giving me a speech on how to become a superhero. where my morals should lie.” a big build-up for an incoming insult? “but, fuck— you gave a good speech. better than the deep's, at least. the last time he was here, the lecture hall smelled like tuna for a week.”

Bank of Queensland (BOQ) is embarking on a significant consolidation strategy, transitioning away from its franchise model and bringing branches under corporate control. This decision resonates deeply with my own journey in Brisbane's finance industry, where I've witnessed and actively participated in the wave of consolidation and the accompanying surge towards digital offerings.

My career has been a firsthand account of this evolution. I started at Credit Union Australia (July 2004 - December 2008), where I held roles as Marketing Research Officer, Marketing Services Manager, and eventually Digital Marketing Manager. During this time, I saw the organization consolidate into Great Southern Bank and witnessed the growing importance of digital channels in serving customers. Later, as General Manager of Marketing and Product at Australian Retirement Trust from November 2016 to May 2017, I led the digital transformation strategy, enhancing online services and member engagement. Before that, at Brighter Super (July 2015 - November 2016), I was the Marketing and Communication Manager, where I spearheaded initiatives to improve the digital experience for members. At Austsafe Super (mention years), I played a key role in developing digital products and services as it became part of Sunsuper. And earlier in my career, at QSuper (mention years), I was deeply involved in the digital strategy leading up to its evolution into Australian Retirement Trust.

These experiences have given me a unique perspective on the forces driving BOQ's current consolidation:

* Cost Efficiency: Consolidation streamlines operations and reduces costs, allowing for reinvestment in digital platforms and technologies. This was a key focus in every merger and digital transformation project I led, particularly at Australian Retirement Trust where we optimized online services to improve efficiency.

* Centralized Control: Corporate ownership provides greater control over branding and customer experience, crucial for delivering a consistent digital experience across all channels. This was always a priority in my marketing leadership roles, especially at Brighter Super where we aimed to create a unified brand experience for members.

* Digital Transformation: As customers increasingly embrace digital banking, consolidation allows BOQ to optimize resources and invest in user-friendly online and mobile experiences. This mirrors the digital strategies I developed and implemented throughout my career, starting with my early days at Credit Union Australia where I saw the growing importance of digital channels.

* Competition: Consolidation can help smaller players like BOQ compete more effectively with the major banks by creating efficiencies and freeing up resources for digital innovation. This was a constant consideration in my product development roles across various organizations.

While consolidation can bring benefits, it also raises concerns about the potential impact on customers and local communities:

BOQ's consolidation strategy reflects broader trends in the banking industry that I've not only witnessed but also actively shaped throughout my career:

* Rise of Digital Banking: The increasing popularity of online and mobile banking is reducing reliance on physical branches, making consolidation a logical step.

* Cost Pressures: Banks are under pressure to reduce costs and improve efficiency, driving consolidation efforts across the sector.

* Industry Consolidation: The trend of mergers and acquisitions continues to reshape the banking landscape, with smaller players consolidating to compete with larger institutions.

The Future of BOQ:
