This morning's surface map reveals a cold front stretching from the Northeast all the way into the Central Plains. This front features several low-pressure centers along its path, each contributing to showers and thunderstorms, with some storms potentially reaching severe levels. The areas most likely to experience severe weather include parts of New England, Pennsylvania, and the Mid-Atlantic states, as well as the Tennessee Valley today. Additionally, Western Texas is expected to see supercell thunderstorms again today, raising concerns for possible tornado activity. Meanwhile, the western region of the country will enjoy pleasant conditions with plenty of sunshine, though some showers and thunderstorms may occur in parts of the Four Corners states. ☔️🌩️ #ColdFront #SevereWeather #Thunderstorms #TornadoWatch #MidAtlantic #NewEngland #CentralPlains #WeatherUpdate #StormAlert #WesternTexas #SupercellThunderstorms #SunnyConditions #WeatherForecast ☔️🌩️

Tornadoes are terrifyingly powerful. Here's how they form 👇 A tornado like this one forms from a supercell, which is a storm with a persistently rotating updraft. This rotation is caused by strong turning and increasing of winds with height. As the first storm towers form, they begin ingesting the spin these winds create in the atmosphere. Over time, as the storm strengthens (sometimes in as little as 30 to 60 minutes) a low-level mesocyclone takes shape. Visually, this is often seen with a developing wall cloud. From here, the process becomes complicated but familiar: A push of air from behind the storm (the rear flank downdraft) wraps around this low-level mesocyclone as air flow into the storm increases. This all helps lower the pressure underneath the mesocyclone and concentrate the rotation. If everything works out, a tornado is born. And if everything works out too well, a violent tornado like this EF-4 is born. #tornado #weather #science #nature #twisters #twister #supercellthunderstorm #twister #oklahoma #tornadoalley

Chasing down a structured supercell north of Tucumcari, New Mexico. This cell occured during the early summer months and was, for a time, tornado warned. However, most of the time this storm had a tornado warning attached to it, it was in the middle of a classic New Mexican road hole. While chasing out on the High Plains, roads can sometimes be scarce for dozens of miles around -- which makes viewing storms difficult. Therefore, when you get a view like this, driving right beside and even underneath an updraft -- you are having a good day. This storm had a beautiful evolution into the evening, with intense striations in the updraft. This storm dropped some large hail in town just a bit later. #weather #nature #science #supercell #supercellthunderstorm #stormchasing #NewMexico

When a storm looks like a 🎂 but it's actually not. This storm had a layered and stacked look to it in Southern Oklahoma near Waurika, with large hail and a menacing green core. At first, there was just an ill defined lowered area underneath the storm with no real wrapping rotation motion. For a lowering under a storm to be considered dangerous it has to sport persistent AND increasing rotation with time. But, this storm did make a quick run at being interesting with a wall cloud that began to have 'the look'. But it was quickly undercut by surging outflow from the rear-flank downdraft. And the lightning was hitting pretty close too. 😳 #weather #supercell #supercellthunderstorm #nature #science #scary #lightning #thunder #storm

There are few things like seeing a structured supercell with that saucer shape to it in the fading light of the day. Usually the sky is alive with near constant lightning and distant, low rumbles of thunder. The crickets are singing and the wind is howling above you. That amazing combination of sounds mixes with the humid air to make for a sinister but yet peaceful sight. To me, it’s the moment I feel most alive but also, it’s something that is incomparable to just about anything else in the world. I see cool landscapes with cool light all the time, but nothing compares to being in the presence of a giant supercell. They make mountains look tiny. 🎥 Supercell near Medford, OK. #weather #supercell #oklahoma #nature #thunderstorm #science #natgeo #oklahomaweather #supercellthunderstorm
