Okay, so it wasn't like it was her fault, per see. She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time! Practising fire magic! Seteth didn't need to scold her for that! He's just a big meanie face with bad hair. Kinu kicked the ground as she walked, grumbling under her breath. It wasn't like she caused any accidents to happen. But noooooo, she had to be "more mindful of her surroundings" and "go and be less chaotic." Stupid Seteth and his stupid rules.

With a lot of people away, Kinu thought it would be a good time to practice magic so that she could be better once they got back. But no, Seteth wanted her to learn under supervision. Well then. She knew where to go then! And Seteth couldn't complain about it! Ears pressed backwards to emphasise her pout, Kinu made her way to the offices. Heading over to the door she wanted, she pulled her best kicked kit look, watering eyes and all, and knocked.

"Excuse me, professor..." she called, the beginning strains of a little fox whine in her voice. "Could I ask for your help with something?"

Because who better to ask about magic, right? Kinu wasn't bad at magic, she was just learning after all. Mistakes were bound to happen, especially since she was so new to it. The most she'd ever done with fire was her fox fire in her kitsune form. Hopefully it was only Seteth who was a meanie face and not all of the professors.

"I don't have enough Res buffs to play support with this" He tells me. "Give me more damage output." He grabs Micaiah and forces her to heal him by using Sacrifice. "You just need to funnel me more. I can deal more damage with Galeforce."

I can't give him Galeforce, I don't have enough skill points. He grabs all his finished threads. It's not enough. "Guess this is the end." He gets on his horse. He says "Rienfleche, get them." There is no hint of sadness in his eyes. Nothing but pure, devastating two attacks in a row at the cost of -1HP per hit. What a cruel world.

Plusquam Chapter 7 director's commentary because i adore being a blabbermouth

hi hi hello. i am going to talk about my fic and nobody can stop me but i don't want to turn the ao3 author's notes into their own 30k novel so yelling on tumblr it is!!

if you are interested in SOME of the machenations of my enigmatic mind, feel free to read. If not. Well i don't care really it's your life. I'm writing this for MY enjoyment.

First of!! I dunno if I talked about them before!! (I have the memory of a goldfish). The silly codenames!!

As I may or may not have mentioned before, the inspiration for this came from the Project Thabes mod for Awakening. In the ferox duel, the mod replaces the generics with inigo, severa, owain, and gerome. The awakening trio get their fates names (a coward's move, but one i understand), but gerome is named michalis, which i just enjoy soooo much???

so when i initially planned out for all the future kids to band together with lucina, i decided they all had to have codenames! otherwise there's really no point in lucina having one....

merric for laurent was the biggest no brainer of all of them, with caeda for severa being a close second. feel free to interpret why. gerome was obviously taken from the thabes mod, and the rest were... a challenge... to come up with!

owain actually gave me a lot of trouble. what WOULD he name himself? i've not finished shadow dragon myself (I only played the prologue so far... haha...), and most i know of the cast comes from mitosis. and scarf's new mystery lunatic reverse run on youtube. and it was that run that reminded me. that kris's confect is an item in the game. meaning that awakening era people know kris exists. except wasn't kris' deal that they like. did not want to be noted down in history.

hence kris being a "heavily debated historical subject". which of COURSE owain would name himself after an unsung but vitally important hero of the shadows.

others i may discuss as they come up? eh, we'll see. not every future kid is gonna be important (god knows that's way too many characters for me to handle), but they will be There. main focus of course being the fp3 squad, with the addition of two others. it is very obvious who it will be, i think.

next up, pairings!

most pairings werent set, outside the ones that are my obvious favorites (panne/lonqu, henlivia, chrobin (duh)). others were up in the air and just happened as i wrote. as i thought about gerome in this, and chatted about the subject with friends, frederick/cherche came to be for this fic! (and for the shrek au, oddly enough. it may have just been on my mind, and i thought chrom missing freddie's wedding was funny.)

it suited my purposes best if gerome had a stronger emotional tie to the blueberry siblings, and a knightly duty to protect them served just that. hence the dialogue of lucina being his liege. he's so utterly disinterested in getting to know the people of the past that i needed that extra bit to keep him coherent. he won't get close to anyone, but he'll do anything to support lucina's aims as though they were his own.

which brings me to the next subject, lucina's PoV! This is the first perspective switch in all of plusquam (not just because I couldn't meet my 4k benchmark with morgan alone this time). Since Morgan and Lucina act separately and won't encounter often, I needed the extra time to establish her character here. To me, there's a clear dissonance between how Morgan views her and how Lucina is. Both of them are unreliable narrators to varying degrees, yet how they differ is where the meat is.

Like, for example, Morgan completely rejecting that Lucina is Robin's child as well, and not just Chrom's, because Grima told them Lucina was different. As compared to the actual Lucina still deeply affected by Robin, and even engaging with grimleal theology on an even field because of him and the other plegian influences in her life.

there's also the matter of her narration style. I waffled back and forth on whether to give her second person narration as well, but ultimately decided on third person limited, with a catch - she exclusively refers to everyone, including herself, by their codenames.

in both their perspectives, i want to create separation between their original names and who they act as. With morgan, this succeeds because the viewpoint has no need to mention their name whatsoever, and with lucina, it succeeds because she's the one creating that distance in her own mind. it's fun to play with!

ah, siblings. so different, yet so similar.

as for the pronouns situation on lucina's pov. well. schrödinger's transgender.

minor thing. i hate adapting canon scenes close to script, hence me just freestyling when lucina and co meet chrom and squad. there's also just... no future portal risen roaming about, which would've made the point moot anyway. that's a very interesting consequence to play with.

having an endless army of generic undead is lame. having to draw on the actual dead of the immediate area - now we're getting spicy!

despite everything, i have grown attached to the risen wyvern and its chittering ways, but it sadly has to go. there's a reason morgan never named it. farewell my sweet prince. aurgh. i mean. this thing has been with morgan through the entire past so far. and it just fell apart more and more over time. crashing into a wall and breaking its neck, having half its throat torn out - poor thing. good thing it can't feel pain anymore.

that is, i think, all i wanted to blabber about? if you're a reader of plusquam, hi, i love you, i hope you have a great day, you may summon me for one turn of battle without expending an action and i will appear as a shimmering blue specter to protect you from harm.

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

oh man, a lot. a lot of heterosexual ones, i feel like? alm/celica. merric/elice feels so abrupt and meaningless in the way that basically any of the non-main-protagonist NES game relationships do, even when they try to retcon it in in the remakes, because it just...forget chemistry, they don't have any interactions! like what!!

felix/sylvain. like, i dunno, i just don't really feel any emotions looking at these two. they are fine? they're fine. i don't...that's it. lmao

also, honestly to an extent i don't really get tharja/robin in awakening. like, i love both characters on their own, but they don't really gel for me in the same way they seem to for a whole lotta other people lol.

ALSO! not fire emblem and i am not in a "fandom" as such for full metal alchemist but shipping roy mustang and riza hawkeye Does Not Gel For Me. i get why people do it but like...i do not understand it.

9. Most disliked character(s)? Why?

i bear grudges especially towards Arvis FE4 (because the narrative treats him as noble and well-intentioned, and basically just tells us that he means good without doing literally anything to back it up) and Gray Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (because i am so fucking sick to death of "guy bothers uninterested woman until she relents into having a relationship with him" AND they always end up in a fucking relationship in their end cards even if you didn't unlock any of their supports).

also shoutouts to olwen FE5, who rules hard and who i love don't get me wrong, but whose supporting cast (fred and reinhardt) are like...way less cool than her. i especially do not vibe with reinhardt, considering he chooses not to defect despite presumably knowing about the child hunts (!), meaning the intended arc of "tragically you cant recruit this cool dude" falls flat because...is he really that cool if he can't be arsed to stop perpetuating tangible horrific evils in fiction? then again, he is working with ishtar, who is described as saving as many kids as possible--but also that only gets mentioned in her other game, which means it's not brought up directly with reinhardt--look the point is i'm not interested in him he's a boring man and i don't know why he has sixteen different alts in Heroes when olwen has one. olwen is the cooler fucking sibling get a grip lmao

i also hate virion (any man who is introduced chasing after a vocally uninterested woman is not worth my while, doubly so if he does not have any sort of tangible character arc), berkut (GOD. AWFUL man. somehow manages to fridge his own wife??? you should be able to recruit rinea in echoes i am forever peeved about this. he's an excellent villain all the way up until you can't recruit rinea about it), and perne (because the narrative apparently believes that kidnapping and torturing a young girl into doing your bidding via frightening her with insects is, like, not a big deal you guys don't sweat it).

11. Is there an unpopular character you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?

i love Kris from new mystery of the emblem, i think she rules, she's a goofus. big fan. also all the new mystery gang tbh. i would say i don't understand why people hate her so much, except i do, and it's the same old same old "everything was better in the old days, when we didn't have support conversations or characters with more than 1 line of dialogue" that you get in every fandom, but i've certainly noticed in fire emblem.

i love edelgard, but i wouldn't say the fandom doesn't: i would say some of the fandom doesn't, but it's a split it would seem. i fucking adore monica but so does everybody else with taste. i really like wendy (inasmuch as anyone in the binding blade has a character), admittedly half due to her class as armored knight and half out of spite at how her wiki page says she's non-viable, but there's a solid half in there to appreciate her on her own merits also. this is again a mixed opinion and not a totally unpopular one, but i love ingrid, i think her story arc is fascinating. i LOVE jill i think her story arc is super compelling, she's one of my favorites. look, i don't know, who's unpopular? if you get me a list of "unpopular" fire emblem characters i will probably pick out every woman on there and be like "aw cmon she's cool/underutilized/worthy of appreciation". except camilla.

archanea banner is actually not bad imo. yumina is cool and i actually kinda like the character development she has from being separated from her twin. i think her being somewhat younger than like. miranda/etc/ other young-ish royalty kept as prisoners of war is compelling, like shes trying to be responsible and act mature despite being a kid and also has the advantage of no love story angle like the others

castor/kashim is cool too, ive seen him around recently and im glad he got in. something abt somewhat pathetic/cowardly yet extremely understandable/relatable ghb archanea bois i am totally digging, w matthis last yr too. caeda and merric are by no means bad choices for the special variants, and im partial to those two + marth as a trio (main lord + soft mage boi + pegasus princess is so peak f e trio content honestly. my original f e parody thingy has that same dynamic as well), esp since the other banner characters are related to them (castor -> caeda and arlen -> merric). and arlennnn elreannnn im screaming in the club congrats on getting in!!! and thank u for coming home to me too. since yumina also came home and castor is ghb ive gotten everyone i remotely want from this banner lol. time to save for the next one

as far as the story chapter i want hresvelger and nidhoggr to prosper and thrive. esp loving nidhoggr for calling out the main characters on their bs. i know were supposed to side w them but honestly im siding w nidhoggr. this fucking child got away with torturing and killing people for years, and just bc she decides she wants to be buddies with her much-older crush from the country she invaded and slaughtered for years means thats all in the past if she believes or whatever. idk they just do not make these protagonists likeable in my opinion. like idk i think theres three basic tiers to protagonists. 1. i love them i want them to succeed. 2. i dont love them but i realize that they should morally overcome whatever they need to, or rather its the better outcome if they do. and 3. i hate them and the story would be better off if these shitheads were just defeated or whatever. and honestly a lot of gacha games are the third category.

for actual plot not to be that guy but i feel like it could be the first step in kasumiverse. for the first few real time months kasumiverse lays low, but in the wake of elanor's resignment from writing publicity for the royal family, in order to fill that void and assert askr/embla dominance for the masses, kasumi and a small squad are sent to embla. they accidentally meet nidhoggr, and kasumi realizes abt the healing power of yggdrassilians.

possibly it starts when the squad first run into eadgyth, a young askran whose parents were emblians, and is being treated like a figurepiece by the order of heroes' supporters. but shes just such a one track absolutely beethovinian classicaloid mind that she doesnt care, for she wants to solve every mystery and uncover the true secret of the worldtree.

kasumi and the others are sent, along with the still figurehead-treated eadgyth, to embla for the ceremony or whatever- eadgyth for publicity and kasumisquad as bodyguards for the order. the chapter 5/6? events happen and they run into nidhoggr? kasumi also learns abt hresvelger and the rest of the worldtree, which like. eadgyth pumps her fist like "i knew it!!!" kasumisquad book 5/6/8 be like "we picked up a weird child" whereas 7 is like "my sexy femme fatale friend got killed offscreen and im having a breakdown"

like considering her backstory is not completely revealed im still not 100 percent sure but honestly ivy is cementing herself really early as a contender for at least like a geisha/wuwu level "yea they cool" character. i like that (so far) her family in her backstory are actually loving and caring, and doesnt have a gender bias pitting one gender parent as evil and the other as a saint like other characters. i also like her past/present/future time theme too (tho after b7 i am wary. like it could be cool but it could be incredibly disappointing :/ ) but more to the point she brought the return of the king b skin antonio with her!!! b skin antonio + cn anni shop package ricky!!!!!! we eatin good bois. looks like music bois are back on the (metaphorical) menu. and with ricky finally getting non coa/mary related content in that like. postcard goods im rlly happy. also ricky seems like he could be a ghost too, considering his skin seems to be called ghost sail. posthumous anniv ricky is the dream honestly.

Jan '24 Refine Review

Alright. time for refine review. My predictions are here.

L! Corrin's negating ability I predicted was only refered to with null-guard (haft tempo). Instead, she has more effects that stack with her other skills, 30% DR from all attacks, 7 true DR on first attack(s), and restore 7 HP after combat. It's certainly worth the investment.

L! Lilina got Time Pulse instead of Quicken Pulse, and 15% of her Res in damage (including her AOE) as I predicted (thou I said 20%). The guaranteed follow-up and 30% DR on first attack is welcomed too.

I got really close with Mini! Merric, with 15% Spd damage, Null-Guard, and a form of DR piercing. I when with full Tempo and 50% reduced DR, they when with Full DR on Special and Lull Spd/Res.

Mini Minerva got a wild supportive ability in "Special Charge" to herself and allies. She then gets NFU when near allies. 7 healing is also good, but if she going to be a Galeforce team, Wings of Mercy might not work with her.

Ferdinand von Aegir is on (Ferdinand von) fire! I predicted the high HP condition but they have it in his base weapon and working with tiers, 25% is stats and [Grand Strategy] during combat, 50% is guaranteed follow-up, and 75% is 7 True damage. Then, it 40% DR on first attack, prevent follow-up, and 7 HP healing, putting all the "Blow" skills effects into one (excluding Flame Tiles or Special Charge.) And just as I said that 8 effect was too much last time, they really did this. I supposed the high HP conditional effect is to thank. This exhaustive list is making me (Ferdinand von) tired.

So, correction from last time. Savoir skills do prevent Leila from swapping places with a support ally after combat. It didn't say that in her weapon, have savoir skills massive contract does say that skill that moves units don't occur when a Savoir is involved. This meant to be applied to Drag Back and Knock Back, but is applies to this weapon too. Anyway, this bug wasn't fixed. What Leila did get was a Spd check to prevent counterattack on top of having ally support. The support swap is now the 9th condition (unless you don't count "Grants Spd+3"). Oh hey, [Discord] and Savage Blow. Wait, 10% Spd TD, does she have that much Spd that they couldn't go with 15%? It's like, 54 Spd?, 61 Spd with Life and Death 4. But, Mini! Merric would have the same amount. I guess it's because the foe can't counterattack, but Mini! Merric came with NFU + Windsweep. Oh well, they have their reasons.

And Kiria, the last of the TMS#FE characters we will have see, got some nice abilities that make her the tankest of all mages. Apparently, the Atk/Res Rein counted as in-combat stats, so she's going to have Atk/Res-12 on foe, which can double with the penalties and [Sabotage] she inflicts. She then gets guaranteed follow-up, 15% Atk true damage (that's the 5th true damage user on this refine list), 7 HP resotred after combat, but also, 75% DR on foe's follow-up attack(s). Foe's that double will need not just damage reduction piercing, but penally negation, or a lot of physical damage. Mages? Good luck.

Lights, Camera, Disaster!

Well. This is certainly new. 

Laslow was sure he’d seen it all when it comes to magical-and-or-draconic interference, but this takes the cake. Damn, what he wouldn’t give for some lemon cake with chocolate frosting to settle his nerves. 

Ever since he opened his eyes, everything has been an assault on the senses. The garish lights overhead, the discomfort of his (thankfully) slate blue suit. Nothing like the utter horror of Azama’s outfit, though knowing him, he probably wanted it that way. 

Dancer rubs his eyes. He shifts a little in his seat, desperate for some cool air. Oh, Naga. Attention lands on the gigantic…projection of their pictures behind their row of chairs. Their names glow cheerily below a picture Laslow does not remember taking—at least they got his good side! 

Voices pull him away from his examination. Azama, as usual, running his mouth. So there was a disaster, huh? Not surprising, given that they quite literally blinked and were transported to…wherever they are. Laslow tunes out the current conversation, again risking a glance around to find an incredibly irritated woman behind the stage. That won’t do at all! 

Dazzling smile in place, he plants his hands on the armrests, leather creaking at the motion. He begins to stand, and as if he’d triggered some kind of trap, the woman snaps her head up. A glare to end all glares sets her considerably lovely features into stone. Chastised from ten feet away, Laslow settles back into his seat. 

“Tough crowd, eh?” He leans over, whispering to Merric.

Chiaki noticed and once again wanted to say something but is reminded of her promise to not be a backseat gamer and let her son play. It did feel a bit difficult at times but it is for his own good. Yuki does have a 24 inch Charmander that he was given last Christmas along with an Eevee.

I do hope to get to know you more as well. Your Majesty, I understand your dissatisfaction and fully support the measures you take to curtail offenses to your good name.

Katarina replies, not caring if Alter beat the man with his bare hands just how he’s perceived and how the threat is issued to the rest who may follow after him.

He is such a charming little boy, I am sure that he was overcome with great joy seeing his grandmother so much so that he broke decorum.

Sonia calls out to him, hoping that he can prepare for her arrival. Sonia told him about her mother wanting to meet him a few months ago and once winter festivities had concluded she found time in her schedule to pay the couple a visit.

Alter looked up from where he was playing with Merric and Yuki. He was keeping a eye on his eldest children. He turned to look at Sonia giving a confused look for a moment. "Wait a minute? Did you say she's arriving at the place today? She doesn't live here. That maid lied to me,"

"Yay Grandma gonna be here," Merric held his knight toy in his hand, and then ran over to his mom. Hugging her leg as he looked up at her. "When is grandma gonna be here?"

Gaius caught himself in a little predicament.

He’s got a cool sword, with no knowledge on how to use it. Neat! If it was any other day, he’d have experimented on it no sweat. Unfortunately (or fortunately..?) for him, the latest incident in the monastery placed everyone on guard when it came to reckless usage of magic. The kid either got hurt badly, or died. The rumors varied but all Gaius knows is someone got zapped. Big time.

Probably not the best time to play around with a lightning sword.

Still! It didn’t count as playing around if you actually placed effort in it or had someone knowledgeable be around to assist him. He’d approach a teacher, but the one he heard of from the faculty was... occupied. 

His next best bet was find someone else, be it student or faculty, that looked like they had time to spend for someone like him, and maybe lend him a hand. He walked around the monastery, pretending to scout if anyone of authority passes by. It takes him a while, and he almost gave up, but eventually, he finds him.

Long robes that reminded him of Bubbles... a unique shade of green hair... yep, seems geeky enough. 

“Hey there! Got time to spare?” He approached him with a wide grin, one hand waved. “You look smart, any chance you’re good with magic?”

"Um, Takumi?" After returning from the scavenging trip, Merric appoaches the archer. "I'm afraid that the bow I found probably has seen better days, but do you think this would do?" Upon asking the question, he shows a beat up, bloodied bow that looks like it could be snapped in half by a light breeze. As he does so, the Mage still cannot shake off the weird feeling that he forgot something important.

Everything was beginning to fall apart; Takumi wasn't sure what was going on at all and often spent his time pacing around their tent in thought as he tried to think of a plan. What really made him particularly anxious was his lack of a bow— he had been too modest to ask Fraldarius for spare weapons considering that she already asked him to stay out of conflict. He'd just be fine with a bow so that he could actually train...

...Thankfully, Merric came just in the nick of time. "Ah, good, I'm sure it's—" Takumi sees the miserable twig that Merric hands him. "...fine." Takumi does not look very happy with it at all as he takes it with a deep sigh. "Okay... One second." Takumi turned around and took a deep breath, baring his teeth for a moment. He would not yell. He would not get angry. Okay.

"Okay. As an archer, this is pretty much the worst kind of bow you could have given me." He holds out the bow, though still grips it because at least it's something... even if it won't be anything for much longer. "Were the rest of the supplies at least... more usable and preferably less bloody?"
