"Laslow!? I knew I recognized that handsome face!" There's a playful lilt in his voice as he approaches the other man from a few feet away, stopping to pick two rubber swords from one of the barrels near the small makeshift arena. "What do you say we have a little fun?"

Niles tosses a sword to him, a small smirk tugging at the corners of his lips as he eyed the pearl charm on his fellow retainer's bracelet and then held up his own. "We trade, and then I help you impress the ladies?" If he could wink, he would have done so. Instead his smile grows a little wider as he rolls his sleeves up to his forearms.

It does not take long for Laslow to find his way over to the stage near the shore. Drawn by overexaggerated shouts and the dull thwacks of practice weapons, he's pleasantly surprised to find there's more to this year's ball than just dancing and delicious treats.

"Niles?" Laslow hasn't seen his fellow retainer in quite some time--years, it feels like, though he's always felt the bonds of time moved a little differently in Fodlan than elsewhere. "A good evening to you, my friend!"

The archer appears the same as ever--teasing smirk and all. Laslow catches the sword with ease, idly weighing it in his palm. "A fair trade indeed! I've yet to find a wingman this evening."

Laslow steps closer to Niles, briefly extending his braceleted wrist. A faint hint of magic stirs the air and when Laslow retracts, an anchor charm has appeared.

"Now," the dancer replies, eyes alight with the promise of a challenge, "Let's dance!"

"This won't do, milord." The evening had barely started and, as soon as he found him, Niles was already reaching a hand out to wipe the sand from Leo's shoulders. It wasn't like him to fret over his lord's appearance, and he couldn't express how much he'd missed him out loud without the vulnerability that came with it. Niles still wasn't very good at that... And he didn't have to be around Leo but part of his job was to take his burdens, not add to them. "I don't know how you've managed to get dirty already."

The small smile that tugs at the corners of his lips is just as subtle as the way his eye quickly takes in the rest of his lord's appearance to make sure nothing else out is of place. Perhaps he's a little too close, but he's trying to make sure Leo's collar isn't inside out as well.

There is a sense of relief, knowing at least one of his retainers is nearby. It was only a matter of time before they eventually found their way to Fódlan's shores; Leo does not begrudge the time that has passed since they last spoke.

Striking out on your own is a good thing, after all.

Leo's brows knit in confusion at Niles' blunt statement. "What--?" A hand descends upon his shoulders, brushing away grains of sand with quick efficiency. The prince sighs. Time apart has not lessened his retainer's sharp tongue.

"It is through no action of my own. Thank you all the same, Niles. This might become something of an uphill battle this evening," Leo replies, adjusting the lapels of his jacket. "I am glad to see you're doing well. Tell me, any news of Nohr? The last correspondence from my brother claimed all is well. Still, I'd like to hear from you."

"Laaaaaaaaaaaadies and gentlemen, party people! Our next event of the evening is a friendly little competition... a test of your reflexes, your dexterity-- and even your bravery!" Someone that Say'ri doesn't recognize is shouting into the night, a crowd of students and faculty alike seemingly enthralled by the challenges that the announcer keeps proposing to any and all that are interested. This one in particular has caught her attention, though, at the mention of putting her nerves to the test-- and she pauses to hear out the rest of the details provided. "The name of the game is simple. Twisterrrrrrr! Step on up, spin the wheel, and find out what's goin' where! It'd be easy if it was just you, though... so good luck winding and weavin' around your opponents!" This is certainly nothing like she's seen in Chon'sin, dark eyes sweeping across the wheel set up, before settling on the mat stretched out across the sand. She's suddenly thankful that she's worn a loose outfit that gives her plenty of room to move... and she boldly steps forward with a hand raised to volunteer as tribute. Little does she know, this is far worse than what she believes it to be. "We have our first challenger! What is your name, Miss?" All eyes are on her, now. And she swallows nearly audibly before speaking. "Say'ri, of Chon'sin." "Well nice to meet you, Say'ri! Come on, come on, there's no time to waste. Give that wheel a big ol' spin!"

His hands are at her shoulders in the blink of an eye, shuffling her towards the oversized prize wheel with various labels on it. She barely gets a chance to reach out before he's nudging her harder, and she nearly stumbles-- her hand barely catches the wheel before spinning it, feeling as if maybe she's just signed her soul to a devil.

Say'ri spins the wheel! Roll 1d5: Left Leg.

Easy enough. With a flourish of his hand, the event host directs her to the mat stretched out before bowing, allowing her to take the metaphorical stage. My hyper fixation (I have a lot of those-) on Monster High is back. So now I think how fitting Nico would be with the Monster High Universe and how he and Cleo de Nile would have the same position.

Cleo is an Egyptian princess,and while she is super rich and use her leverage as a princess for herself and her friends,at school she is just another ghoul that is popular for her position as capitan of the fearleading's squad. She is treated pretty normal,like another student,by everyone even with her family. Nico would be the same. A prince that use his privilege as leverage,to help the people he cares for,and even tho he wouldn't be really popular,everyone would know him. He is also pretty,kind and quite,so I can totally see him vibing in one of the art classes with Rochelle or Draculaura.

Also,C.A. Cupid and Nico are technically related,since she is the adoptive daughter of Eros,Aphrodite's child. And with Nico history with Cupid himself I can totally see him being awkward with her,trying to have a good relationship with her because it's not her fault that her adoptive father outed him. It's the god's fault. And Cupid would be both angry at her dad for this,because he forced something that has its time,and also trying to reconnect with Nico because she doesn't want her cousin to feel bad about it or alone. She also would gossip so hard with Nico when it came to his crush on Will and how their relationship came to be.

Cleo is the daughter of the Mummy,so her family is linked to egyptian mythology. Cleo herself often use ancient artifacts to her advantage. I can totally see Nico and her talking about the various difference in their own pantenones during some political meetings when Nico plays the role of Ambassador of Pluto (and as a prince himself too).

There are ghost students that I know will vibe with him and follow him around,since he is both Hades's kid and the Ghost King. They will probably find his presence comforting and talk to him about everything,asking for advice and going to his room any time they need it. Nico welcome them with hot chocolate and marshmellow and listen to them when they speak. Spectra is his favorite. Porter pissed him off with his painting most of the time,but he's still fond of him. Hunted High students would have a stroke seeing him.

As Dracula's adoptive daughter,Draculaura has a deep connection with creatures of the night (bats for example) and the death. She and Nico would proprably take night walk in the forest,talking about how they both embrace that part of life and how similar their dads are. They have similar daddy issues (Dracula and Hades care about them but sometimes they are shitty about it).

Lagoona Blue is a sea monster. Can totally see how she and Nico would talk about Percy,if one of them had some news about him. She would try to make him go for a swim,but Nico would refuse because that's his uncle's domain. Even with Lagoona you can't never know if you are going to die in it.

Deuce is a gorgon,son of Medusa (and also Cleo's boyfriend). The awkwardness that Nico would have interacting with him,would be high in the sky. "Sorry,my cousin killed your mom,and your aunties too,but I'm sure they are already reforming in Tartarus and will come back." And Deuce would either be cool with it,or just look at him speechless.

Twyla is the Boogieman daughter. She and Nico would hide in the shadows together when they don't want to socialize with others ghouls,and have deep talk about their connections to it. They can understand each other pretty well and are quite similar. They are totally bestie.

Now I need a fanfic about it-

"Haha, I won't. But if you didn't tell even me, I'd assume Leo does not know either?" Corrin laughs at the thought of such surprise on his younger brother's face. He did have rather troublesome retainers after all, it would be a shock for anyone for such people to turn up so suddenly.

Corrin feels his face heat up slightly, at what was surely a shining compliment from Niles. 'Pristine condition' huh? He certainly didn't feel like that was the case, but hey, lots of people had different perceptions of him, and most were certainly better than his own view of himself.

"Surprisingly? Whatever do you mean surprisingly?"

"Niles! What a surprise to see you here! I knew my siblings would be here, but it's a delight to see you as well!" Corrin giggles, a smile across his lips. It was always nice to see an old friend, no matter how long it had been. (Though it had truly not been long at all.)

"I only wish you would have told me!"

The surprise on Niles’ face is notable, just for a moment, but subtle. The slight widening of his visible eye is all there is. Niles isn’t unhappy to see the prince, and so a slight smile forms on his face at the sight of him. “I didn’t think to tell most people I was leaving, so don’t take it personally, Lord Corrin.” He sounds genuinely apologetic, a point in favor of his acting skills no doubt, but the amusement on his face gives away the fact that he is only teasing.

He knew this seminar would not be a traditional one.

'Meeting near the forest after dinner' already sounded like a cliche horror tale told around soldier's watchfires. The fact that Niles expressed interest in attending meant he'd found it intriguing, which also meant the off-putting aura around the entire seminar did nothing to dissuade him.

Still, in the archer's defense, Leo doesn't think he expected a terrifying chase in the dusk lit woods.

Hands raised high, emerald eyes remain fixated on the cloaked figure of their "instructor." Magic sparks weakly around gloved fingertips. A half-finished incantation lies prepared on his lips; he will not be caught unawares.

He felt the initial attack was nothing more than test of skills. Beginner's fencing moves are not fearsome in and of themselves. The unexpectedness of it all is the true attack. Given enough time, Leo's confident he can outmaneuver this cloaked, theatrical showman.

But he does not know what will come next, and that irritates him most of all.

"Tell me this isn't some elaborate ruse you conjured out of sheer boredom," Leo murmurs to his retainer. While he doubts even Niles would go this far for a joke, recent experiences have shaken his trust in people. "If this is, remind me never again to leave you alone for so long."

upon careful consideration of all subaki supports, i've come to the conclusion that the reason he's like this is because he had total amnesia at like, age 14, and didn't tell anybody. then his parents said "u gotta be perfect" and he was like "okayyyy" and just thought this is how he Is pre-amnesia and giving up the ruse now would be Fucking Embarrassing

So I saw on MyFigureCollection that October 13 was maybe possibly Yusaku's birthday, although I couldn't find any reliable source for this. I'd have loved to do something nice and light-hearted for the occasion, but I'm still feeling too strongly about it all. So here you are instead: Happy (maybe) Birthday, Yusaku! Instinctively, as Zihark slips further into the cave, he finds himself with his back to the wall, rather than to his companion. Whether he was another hunter, or if he was their prey in the end.
