On Sam, looking at Torres in the hospital, hearing footsteps come up behind him.

Sam: "It's a private room. Go away."

Bucky comes into view beside Sam.

Bucky: "Missed you too."

They look at each other. Bucky a soft smile. Sam looks away, a smile tugging the corner of his mouth.

Sam: "I hate to admit it...I'm glad you're here."

Sam looks back to Bucky and they both go in for a hug, Bucky closing his eyes in it. They part, stood side-by-side again.

Bucky: "You looked good out there on that 6 o'clock."

Sam shakes his head a bashful smile. Then sombre again.

Bucky: "But then I saw this."

Sam: "Doctors had to restart his heart. They don't know if..."

Sam closes his eyes.

Bucky: "This isn't your fault."

Sam: "It makes me think of Steve. How many alien invasions did he stop, again?"

Bucky: "Two."

Sam: "Two. Wow. What made me think I could follow that. I should have took the serum. Like Steve. Like you."

Bucky looking at Sam.

Bucky: "Why?"

Sam: "Because this is all starting to seem much bigger than me."

Sam turns to fully face Bucky.

Sam: "Ross, he asked me to restart the Avengers, Buck. But Joaquin's in here. Isaiah's in prison. And Sterns...I had him. I had Sterns. Right in my hands. And he got away. He damn near pushed us to the brink of war, because I wasn't—"

Sam emotionally cuts himself off.

Bucky: "Say what you need to say."

Sam looks down, then back to Bucky.

Sam: "Steve made a mistake."

Bucky: "No he didn't. He gave you that shield, not because you're the strongest, but because you're you. You think if you had that serum, you'd be able to protect all the people you care about. Steve had it, and he couldn't. You're a human being and you're doing your best. Steve gave people something to believe in, but you...you give them something to aspire to."

Sam squints at Bucky.

Sam: "Did your speech writers help you with that?"

Bucky: "They did, yeah, the ending, a little bit. Well, did you like it? Was it—?"

Sam: "No no, it was good. Solid...B plus."

Bucky: "Yeah. Emotional."

Sam: "Very. I felt it."

Bucky: "But just enough."

Sam: "Yeah."

Bucky: "Listen, I've gotta...catch a plane. I have a campaign fundraiser. It's so stupid."

They look over Torres, smiling. Bucky looks at Sam.

Bucky: "He's gonna be all right, man."

Sam looks at Bucky, shakes Bucky's hand.

Sam: "Thanks, Buck."

Bucky: "I love you, buddy."

Bucky cuffs Sam's arm and leaves; Sam nods, looking after him.

i’m always thinking that sam is constantly being left alone, either by choice (steve) or as a consequence of death (riley, nat, his mother and father), like until tfatws where he lived with sarah, every time he is on screen or mentioned he is alone, since the moment we meet him. in dc when he meets steve, in age of ultron he mentions looking for bucky alone, in infinity war he is snapped alone and when he comes back what he receives from steve is a job (it is honoring but it’s a job) and leaves him to deal with it alone because at the time bucky also left and ignored sam when he tried to reach for him.

like most of sam’s interactions with other ppl until tfatws was ppl needing him and he helping them. like for someone as outgoing as sam, he had few real friends and even fewer deep connections— and even the friends he has were formed by sam trying to help them (isaiah) or taking care of them (joaquin) and ppl talk a lot about how bucky found himself someone that can fly after his trauma of falling but sam found someone that will stay with him, no matter what. like bucky’s ass is not leaving, he goes out of his way to make sure sam is okay, promises to always be there, says sam can call him anytime, but i bet my left tiddie he doesn’t even need to cause the moment sam is not okay bucky is there (that’s not even me saying, that canon!) but more importantly in bucky sam found a relationship where he is not always giving something of himself like he always is but actually receiving the love and support he is constantly giving other ppl

The type of intimacy they have is one no other pairing in the MCU will ever be able to attain. They say so much to eachother in a single look.

The silent check in with each other,

Bucky performing an act of service for Sam because it’s at this point he realizes he’s fucked up but can’t get the words out just yet to apologize.

The little head nod between them as they spend the early morning together with no one but each-others silent company because that’s all they’ve ever needed form each other.

They just need the other close by to feel like things will be ok

To all the MCU fans saying that Sam "should've" taken the super soldier serum and that being of average human strenght won't be helpful when fighting against mightier, bigger villains such as Doom or Galactus, to them I say:

Sam may technically not have super strenght, but let's not knock his fighting skills either, even without taking his suit's Wakandan enhancements into account. Just look at the BNW opening scene and then we'll talk. Sam is a super skilled fighter in his own right.

I know not all villains are going to be able to be reasoned out of their villain ways, but it's always worth a shot, and Sam is by far the best person to do that. Empathy and compassion ARE strenghts, ones that superhero movies way too often overlook, and it's honestly refreshing to see a hero that can promote that.

It's not as if he doesn't know anyone who can give him a hand in the fighting. The point of the BNW ending is that Sam's going to assemble his Avengers line-up, and chances are a GOOD chunk of the ones already announced for Doomsday are gonna be part of his team. Plus, if it wasn't for that stupid and OOC Thunderbolts* ending, Bucky would for sure be on his team as well, to satisfy the fanboys who are so desperate for serum-infused heroes. In a world where the TB* ending is less idiotic, Bucky would've presented the new team to Sam after getting Valentina in jail (as they should have), and I'm sure Sam would've been willing to give them a shot. Or at least a trial period or something.

What Bucky said in BNW was true: Sam gives people something to aspire to. Heroes in the MCU are Earth's protectors, true, but they're also public figures and celebrities. That's a fact we can't ignore. So the importance of Sam inspiring people, ALL kinds of people, to be better and to never give up regardless of their limitations is HUGE actually, and shouldn't be overlooked.
