With the temperatures dropping, we sometimes rely on a "Canadian Candle" to keep the coffee and ourselves warm up at the log yard. What is a "Canadian Candle" you might ask?

A Canadian candle, also known as a Swedish torch or log candle, is a simple and effective way to make a self-sustaining fire.

Using a chainsaw, we make four cuts into the log from the top, dividing it into eight sections. Cut down about three-quarters of the way, leaving the base intact. Place kindling or fire gel into the cuts at the top of the log. Light the kindling or gel to ignite the log.

As the kindling burns, it will ignite the inner parts of the log, creating a chimney effect. The flames will draw air through the cuts, sustaining the fire for several hours.🔥

Staying productive these days with some minor forest maintenance. We got rid of this tree stump by turning it into a Swedish torch. 4 Jaboticaba trees added in its place. The jackfruit, durian, and cashews in that corner of our forests are also getting a chance for more sunlight and growth while the remaining wood and ashes are left to rot and feed our soil. Swedish Torch

The Swedish Torch is a simple to build, low maintenance fire, granted you have a saw or ax handy. It uses little fuel but also puts out little heat and light. To build a Swedish Torch...

1. Find a good dry log with a flat base to stand it up on. 

2. Cut a cross pattern into the top of the log and extend it downward toward the bottom of the log. Alternatively, split the long into sections and set them up in the shape of the log.

3. Start a small fire on top of the log and let the flame spread down the log.
