Do you enjoy making big decisions and leading other people? Or would you rather not take on that kind of responsibility? 👑 Personally, I’ve been known to take charge of a situation or project when nobody else seems willing and nothing’s going to get done otherwise, but I don’t really enjoy bossing others around and I’d much rather do the work all on my own than have to tell other people how to do it! 👑 The heroine of BEYOND THE SHADOWED EARTH, though, is a fiery young queen determined to be Empress of half the world, and who spends much of the early chapters of the book pushing for a grand building project that she’s convinced must be finished no matter what obstacles stand in the way. 👑 Eda is prickly, sharp-tongued, and consumed with ambition and pride, which makes her rather unlikeable at first. But her backstory is so compelling, and there’s so much humanity and vulnerability beneath her hard surface, that I found myself turning the pages avidly to find out what would happen to her next. I won’t spoil any of the story for you, but @gamwyn pulls off a remarkable narrative feat in taking Eda through a painful but satisfying character journey and revealing the truth behind her beliefs and actions. 👑 Anyway, if you’ve enjoyed Megan Whalen Turner’s Attolia series, there’s a good chance you’ll appreciate this book too.
