I am loving it! The lifestyle side of it is incredible, i have 11 recipes saved already and a list of skincare products to look into.

But moreso i’ve loved the community. Chinese memes are hilarious, i love how they’re in on the chinese spy jokes and we all now pay daily cat tax, if you don’t have your own then store bought or dog tax is fine 😂 I’ve finally figured out stickers and am mutuals with a couple Chinese swifties now which is cool! Her music has always connected me to people before so it feels fitting that i find a little home in swiftbook 😅

Many users have given tutorials and tips on how to best use the app and people have been sharing stuff about our respective cultures. I cried a couple times last night at videos from Chinese users welcoming us and giggled my butt off at roxycats introduction/guidelines video. Roxycat: “Do not shit in my living room” 500 americans in the comments: “yes maam roxy maam🫡”

Some people have described it as feeling like a field trip with a bunch of other schools or a festival high. Everyone’s kinda curious and being kinda silly and extra but i just love it. I’m so glad I signed up when it was still at #8 😂 we kinda overloaded their account signup and people have been getting errors for hours now whej trying to sign up. But 15million downloads overnight can do that I guess 🤣

Oh oh one last thing i love: apparently we’re the personality hire, if you will, of tiktok and people from other countries are leaving tt to follow us to xiaohongshu because we are 90% of their fyp. We’re all like “Omg we thought you hated us😭😭😭” but China + these other digital migrants are being so kind like we are not used to this it’s wild 🥹

Nope now it’s at the point that i’m shocked that people off tt don’t know what’s going down. I have no reach but i’ll sum it up anyway.

SCOTUS is hearing on the constitutionality of the ban as tiktok and creators are arguing that it is a violation of our first amendment rights to free speech, freedom of the press and freedom to assemble.

SCOTUS: tiktok bad, big security concern because china bad!

Tiktok lawyers: if china is such a concern why are you singling us out? Why not SHEIN or temu which collect far more information and are less transparent with their users?

SCOTUS (out loud): well you see we don’t like how users are communicating with each other, it’s making them more anti-american and china could disseminate pro china propaganda (get it? They literally said they do not like how we Speak or how we Assemble. Independent journalists reach their audience on tt meaning they have Press they want to suppress)

Tiktok users: this is fucking bullshit i don’t want to lose this community what should we do? We don’t want to go to meta or x because they both lobbied congress to ban tiktok (free market capitalism amirite? Paying off your local congressmen to suppress the competition is totally what the free market is about) but nothing else is like TikTok

A few users: what about xiaohongshu? It’s the Chinese version of tiktok (not quite, douyin is the chinese tiktok but it’s primarily for younger users so xiaohongshu was chosen)

16 hours later:

Tiktok as a community has chosen to collectively migrate TO a chinese owned app that is purely in Chinese out of utter spite and contempt for meta/x and the gov that is backing them.

My fyp is a mix of “i would rather mail memes to my friends than ever return to instagram reels” and “i will xerox my data to xi jinping myself i do not care i share my ss# with 5 other people anyway” and “im just getting ready for my day with my chinese made coffee maker and my Chinese made blowdryer and my chinese made clothing and listening to a podcast on my chinese made phone and get in my car running on chinese manufactured microchips but logging into a chinese social media? Too much for our gov!” etc.

So the government was scared that tiktok was creating a sense of class consciousness and tried to kill it but by doing so they sent us all to xiaohongshu. And now? Oh it’s adorable seeing this gov-manufactured divide be crossed in such a way.

This is adorable and so not what they were expecting. Im sure they were expecting a reluctant return to reels and shorts to fill the void but tiktokers said fuck that, we will forge connections across the world. Who you tell me is my enemy i will make my friend. That’s pretty damn cool.

"It's been a long time coming, but"

Hello, tumblr! Long time no see!

I was wondering if there was anyone around here since the competition field between social media is getting tougher these days and I am really happy to find out that we are still mingling around this wonderful bubble that tumblr is.

The thing is: I’ve had a lot of time to think and read (the perks of being unemployed) and suddenly, I felt really inspired by two people in my universe, which, until now, I didn't recognize their similarities: João Guimarães Rosa and Taylor Swift.

I think we can dispense further introductions towards miss americana, Taylor Swift, innit? Even because this text is for you, swiftie and we already have a long relationship (the best she ever had - not my words, hers) with young miss Alison.

The person who I would like to introduce is Mr João Guimarães Rosa and try to convince you to give the splendid work of this Brazilian writer a chance, because, in my opinion, if you admire Taylor Swift's work as a lyricist, you’ll LOVE  Guimarães (or Guima, as I like to affectionately call him) because like miss Swift,  he is a word person.

João Guimarães Rosa was a Brazilian writer, poet,diplomat, novelist and physician (does this remind you of someone who is a singer, songwriter, doctor, producer, actress, screenwriter, and director? Oh well), who is widely regarded as the most important Brazilian author of the twentieth century and one of the greatest of all time. His work is known for its unique linguistic style as well as for its exploration of themes such as identity, memory, the human condition and, my favourite one: love.

In his most famous novel “Grande Sertão: veredas” (The Devil to Pay in the Backlands), we know the story of Riobaldo, a bandit who lives several dilemmas related to morals, the nature of existence, his identity, the constant doubt about the realization of a pact with the devil (THIS IS SO FUCKING COOL! IYKYK) and his love for his colleague Diadorim. Being that last subject written in such a poetic way that I'm sure it would become the bedside book for all of you.

One of the great characteristics of Guimarães Rosa is the way he uses language. Every phrase is so well written because in its simplicity he can build complex sentence structures that hold so much meaning. I keep catching myself losing my breath everytime I read his work because every single time a side of it that I didn’t get the last time reveals itself to me and I’m blown away all over again. 

Guimarães Rosa employs a distinctive style that combines regional dialects, neologisms (yes, guys, the man could invent WORDS!) and archaic Portuguese to create a unique voice that captures the richness and diversity of Brazilian culture, and in this book, helps to build all the complexity of the feelings of a man who finds himself questioning his nature, his identity while going through the unsettling feeling of being in love with another man in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Although regionalism is a constant feature in this book, by dealing with themes such as good and evil, love, hate, God and the devil, betrayal, among others of a philosophical nature, the writer manages to make this narrative universal, so that everyone can recognize themselves within it (I, myself, have the feeling that he reads what is inside my soul… oh wait, can you think about someone that have the same delicacy with the human soul and  that can express the nuances through words that are utterly relatable?).

With that in mind, I cannot help but imagine that being a fan of one of the greatest composers of all time, who manages to be a great storyteller and add poetry to her narrative, you will not like the universe created by Guimarães Rosa and his words.

I want to be clear that I'm not comparing the two because I think Mr. Rosa is incomparable just like Taylor is incomparable, what I'm saying is that god/the universe/whatever you believe has given these two people a precious gift, which is to reach parts of our hearts that we didn't realise were calling out to us.

It breaks my heart that not many people get to witness this man's writing in his mother tongue, Portuguese, as much of his poetry is inextricably linked to the way our language presents itself to the world and much of it is lost in translation. However, I'm sure that regardless of the translation you have access to, Guimarães will make you fall in love with the way the world is seen through his eyes.

All in all, I want to share with you some of my favourite quotes by Guima and I hope that, in a while, you will have favourites of your own.

✈️ FLIGHT DELAY ✈️ . Wouldn’t it be nice if books always launched perfectly and on time? But like airplanes, sometimes they get delayed and all the folks who bought tickets are left gloomily wondering what went wrong. . In this case, it was a backlog at the printer that put production of the SWIFT hardcovers behind a few days. So today it’s launching in e-book format — thus this lovely repost of @readingbee.444’s pic — but the limited edition hardcovers won’t be shipping for another week or two. Alas! . Do you enjoy reading non-fiction books? Or would you rather just lose yourself in a story? . Some people think fantasy authors don’t have to do research because they can just make everything up, but those people usually don’t know much about writing or fantasy. All the best authors I know do lots of research to make their worlds feel rich and well-grounded, and bring in those little concrete details (what Tim Clare calls “crunchy specificity” - isn’t that a delightful phrase?) that can make all the difference between a setting that pulls the reader in and one that seems shallow and evanescent. . So even though the Flight and Flame trilogy is set in present-day Cornwall rather than some imaginary fantasy kingdom, and even though I wanted to put some original twists on the local folklore rather than simply retelling it, I read a lot of folk tales, books and articles about Cornwall during the writing process to make sure my flights of fancy had a solid foundation. Here are three of the most important ones I used for reference — the one on the right is a very specific walking guide to a pretty small area, which just goes to show there’s a book about practically everything if you know where to look for it! . All that being said, I admit to not really loving research. I do it because I feel it’s the right and responsible thing as an author, but I’d much rather read a historical novel than an actual book of history any day! Do you enjoy making big decisions and leading other people? Or would you rather not take on that kind of responsibility? 👑 Personally, I’ve been known to take charge of a situation or project when nobody else seems willing and nothing’s going to get done otherwise, but I don’t really enjoy bossing others around and I’d much rather do the work all on my own than have to tell other people how to do it! 👑 The heroine of BEYOND THE SHADOWED EARTH, though, is a fiery young queen determined to be Empress of half the world, and who spends much of the early chapters of the book pushing for a grand building project that she’s convinced must be finished no matter what obstacles stand in the way. 👑 Eda is prickly, sharp-tongued, and consumed with ambition and pride, which makes her rather unlikeable at first. But her backstory is so compelling, and there’s so much humanity and vulnerability beneath her hard surface, that I found myself turning the pages avidly to find out what would happen to her next. I won’t spoil any of the story for you, but @gamwyn pulls off a remarkable narrative feat in taking Eda through a painful but satisfying character journey and revealing the truth behind her beliefs and actions. 👑 Anyway, if you’ve enjoyed Megan Whalen Turner’s Attolia series, there’s a good chance you’ll appreciate this book too. Guess what flew in to my mail this week? . Isn’t it gorgeous? I know the finished hardcover is sure to be even more beautiful, but it’s exciting to have the ARC in my hands! .
