Take Me Far Away (AlcinaXReader)

(Warning: Mentions of death)
Chapter 1; Newcomer
Cool air brushed along your smooth skin, your heart beating gently within your chest. You slowly begin to waken due to the light from the sun shining through the small crack of your heavy and mostly closed eyelids. You gently grasp the wool blanket you had placed over your lower half the night before to keep yourself from getting too chilly as you sat there on a creaky, old wooden chair, a cushion being the only thing giving you any amount of comfort, your feet propped up onto a stool. You often allowed yourself to sit outside and watch the stars as you drift off into unconsciousness. It was the only amount of relaxation you were gifted with.
You place your hands gently against both arm rests, giving yourself some assistance sitting up. You reach behind your neck, gently rubbing out the knot that had formed from you sleeping with your neck crooked for the most of the night. Your skin was cold to the touch. Your mouth waters, your eyes widening a bit as your senses were completely consumed with a delicious aroma, breakfast.
Gently moving your feet from the stool, you removed the blanket that covered you. Your feet touch the cold stone, sending shivers throughout your body - a small gasp escaping your rosy lips, probably should have worn some slippers to cover your feet. Your body tenses as you hurriedly walk towards the door to your room, wanting to escape the cold feeling beneath your feet.
As you enter your room, with your peripheral vision you see a figure standing by the foot of your bed. It was Andreea, your personal maid. Your feet stop in their tracks as this woman seemed to be looking you up and down, was she ashamed? Definitely so. You were sick and were yet still allowing yourself to do everything that Doctor Fischer forbid you to do. You walk towards your bed after a few seconds of uncomfortable silence.
"My Lady, You know Lord Varon would not approve of you being out all night, exposed to the piercing cold. It is not good for your health." Andreea informed you, rather stern in fact. Andreea is an older woman, in her 60's. She was one of the only people you could tolerate to be around. She followed your movements as you made your way towards the black clothes that she had displayed for you on your bed.
You couldn't help but let out a dejected sigh - looking over the fabric, gently using only your fingertips, you lazily caress the smooth surface of the gown. Of course you knew the cold was poor for your health, most days you complied with your doctor's requests, but other times, you just felt the need to inhale the fresh, cool air. Your eyes glossed over as you knew the event that was awaiting you, your father's funeral. Your father's death was sudden and the cause of death was ruled an accident. Your father, Petru Floarescu, was a prideful man. He wasn't necessarily kind but he got matters and issues resolved at any extent. On the evening of his death, he had gone gambling with a few other Lords. The night turned sour and - according to the man in charge of the autopsy - your father 'accidentally' toppled over the railing while on the second floor balcony, harming himself in such a way that caused him to die instantly. Of course you were never convinced it was an accident. Your father was one of the richest and most powerful men in this part of the country. You knew how vindictive and greedy the fellow Lords were around these parts. If given the right opportunity, you knew that any man would have had your father heaved and pushed off that balcony. The actions of these greedy men resulted in you becoming an orphan.
Your mother, Marilena Floarescu, had passed away during childbirth - your birth. It was a difficult matter but you grew up well with the help of Andreea. She had practically raised you ever since you were but an infant. Now you were married and she moved with you into this old, lifeless castle nearly six dreadful years ago, living with your husband was definitely not easy. You never liked the man - you never really approved being in the presence of any man besides your father. They were all filthy and perverse, in your opinion.
Nicolae, your husband, was not a kind or gentle man. He didn't seem to care about anything that was not his friends or his money. You were arranged to marry him - without an option, as most women were with your status. Your father was a Lord who married you off to the son of another rich :ord. You resented Nicolae but there was nothing you could do about such a thing, so you focused on other matters such as your painting and music. You loved music, you adored music.
Your attention was taken from your dress as the woman beside you cleared her throat. You quickly glanced over towards her. She could tell by your facial expressions that your mind was running wild with intrusive thoughts.
"Lord Varon wants you to get dressed and meet him for breakfast before you make way to your father's funeral, my Lady." She calmly told you.
You rolled your eyes, looking away at the thought. What could he possibly want to speak to you about? He never even cared for you or your father. He only ever spoke of how foolish your father was. Little did Nicolae know, but he was the foolish of them all - but you weren't about to tell that to him, or maybe you should. "He probably only wishes to see me so he can talk to me more about my father's money that he is to inherit." You snapped a bit, not at the other woman as she had done nothing wrong. You were just frustrated over the entire situation, as you were a woman in this world, you were never to receive these lands unless you were married, therefore making those lands your husbands, not actually yours. Thankfully Andreea knew all too well of the circumstances and completely understood, remaining silent.
You slipped off your robe before Andreea helped you remove your night gown. As you put on this black dress, your mind kept sinking to the horrid thoughts of your father's death, you were going to get answers as to the true events that occurred.
Once you were dressed and your long brown hair was put into an elegant up-do, you made your way towards the dining hall where you were to meet with him. Your heart dreaded seeing him as all he ever did was point out your flaws and practically mock your existence. That or he would simply go on about his friends, whom you had gathered enough knowledge about to know they were not the best influences.
You gently placed your hand against the wooden railing as you descended from the stairs, your lungs felt as though you were about to fall into a coughing fit. The red carpet covering your stairs, preventing your shoes from making too much noise, Andreea following close behind. She was told to stay with you everywhere until you were of good health as Nicolae didn't want the responsibility, which you preferred for you despised being in each other's presence.
As you approached the door to the dining hall. You watched him as he downs a glass of alcohol - typical. He didn't seem to notice your entrance for he was startled when your seat was pulled out for you by, Marius, the family butler. You nodded your head towards the man as if saying 'thank you'. Marius reciprocated the smile before helping you take your seat, pushing in your chair.
Nicolae stood there, watching you with greedy eyes as he placed his now empty glass onto the dark wooden table, creating a loud clank. He apparently seemed to be in a foul mood, shocking to you as he was getting everything he wanted, was he not?
Your food was placed before you, along with your medicine to help you with your illness, paired with a glass of water which you were especially thankful as you really needed something to drink. He spoke, finally, causing you to groan internally. Couldn't he just allow you to eat your breakfast in peace? Apparently not.
"I don't wish to be at the funeral very long. I have other matters that I must attend to." He spoke to you as if this day was an inconvenience to him - you averted eye contact as he spoke, just his voice alone made your skin crawl. You hated him. Everything in the life was about him and what he wanted. He never cared about your father and that much was evident, even more so now.
You gently picked up the fork placed beside your glass plate, and began to poke your cooked eggs with disinterest. "If you're so bent on avoiding my fathers funeral, then simply don't attend, you surely won't be missed." You told him in a slightly harsh tone, glancing up at him with your eyes.
He didn't seem to appreciate your tone very much as he glared at you, his eyebrows scrunched together. He takes a few steps around the table, slowly making his way towards you, his left hand balled into a fist as his other caressed the table, inching towards you menacingly.
You slowly stiffened your posture and raised your chin a bit, looking at him through narrowed eyes. He wouldn't dare touch you - not today.
As his presence grew nearer, there was a voice that came from behind you, stopping Nicolae's movements almost instantly, it was Marius. He held a letter in his hand, his index finger gently drumming on the paper as he had a sense of what he just interrupted and prevented. "Forgive me, my Lord." He takes a glance at you before walking towards your husband. Nicolae was standing there with an annoyed expression plastered on his face, his hand held out before him so he could receive the letter. Once the letter was placed into his hand, he slowly turned away so he could read it in - peace? Apparently so, he wouldn't let you or Marius see the contents of that letter.
You would usually care less about his business but seeing as today was certainly important, the curiosity tugged at you. You watched him carefully, looking up at him through your eyelashes as you picked your food up with your fork. You wanted to see if his movements could give off any sign of anxiety or excitement.
After waiting a few agonizing minutes, he turned and gave you his full attention. He closed and folded the letter in his palm, his knuckles turning white from how hard his grasp was. You were slightly amused at how frustrated he seemed to be. He opened his mouth as if he was about to express his discontentment. Yet again, you averted your gaze and the corners of your lips twitched downward.
He let out an exaggerated sigh however, not saying a single word, which irked you a bit as you were sure that letter had something to do with your father.
You didn't press however and finished your food without speaking a single word before Marius spoke up, breaking the deafening silence, his hands formally placed behind his back. "Your carriage has arrived, the driver is waiting just outside." He announced to the both of you.
You placed down your eating utensils hurriedly before wiping your mouth clean with the napkin provided, scooting your chair out and walking towards the main entrance. You didn't care if Nicolae was accompanying you or not - you had a place to be. Your father may not have been the best man but you still felt that he didn't deserve for this day to become anymore tainted than Nicolae was making it.
As you approached the door, Andreea walked up behind you with your coat, gloves and black hat with thin lace material draping down the front, down to your chin to show you were in mourning. You complied as Andreea assisted with your coat before you slipped your fingers into your gloves. It was quite bleak outdoors as there were clouds slowly starting the hide the sun behind their dark grey silhouette. Marius had the hook of the umbrella's handle safely placed onto his forearm, in case it rained, as he opened the doors. Andreea gently takes your hand as you make your way to the carriage.
You glanced towards your husband as he too seemed to be making his way as well, he was probably only going as it would make him look bad to not attend. This man really cared more about his image than the feelings of his own wife. Pathetic - how much of a pity it would be if they all saw who he really was. The driver opened the carriage door for you, allowing you to enter first. As Nicolae took his seat beside you, you happened to look over and notice as he stuffed the letter that he had received into his coat pocket. You narrowed your eyes at the man before turning your attention towards the window at your left. What could have been in that letter? You chewed nervously onto your inner cheek. You needed to find out what that telegram contained and you would.
❀❀❀
The fire crackled as a well dressed Lady Alcina Dimitrescu walked through her chambers, the heat from the fire place making the room rather toasty as she gathered her gloves. The Countess and her husband, Lord Stefan Dimitrescu, were to attend the funeral of a family friend this day. Of course the Countess had no feelings towards the man who had died as she has never personally come in acquaintance with the man but she was obligated to attend either way as her father requested. This man appeared to have been close friends with her father, apparently business partners as well.
Stefan walked into her chambers, which were separate from his, clearing his throat and standing by the door, watching her grab her gloves. Lady Dimitrescu preferred to keep separate chambers as she couldn't tolerate being around her husband, let alone sleep in the same room. "The last of our bags have been brought in from the carriage." He simply informed her, keeping his sentence short as he knew she was tired from travelling to this new town and she already had more obligations, due to her father ordering her to. Of course her father lived back in a small village making and transporting the family wine, the last few months the Countess and her husband had travelled to supply many people with their best wine and make them even wealthier than they were, which was completely unnecessary considering how they were by definition, extremely rich and wealthy.
As the Countess heard her husbands voice, she stood up straight, stiffening her jaw in frustration.
"I do not understand how attending the funeral of a man whom I have no knowledge of is going to do the family business any good." She snapped before turning to look at the Count who had his arms crossed, his eyebrow raised.
"You know very well we are going to meet people, make new customers. Not everything has to be complicated." He leaned against the door way, raising an eyebrow at her, thinking she was simply just being ridiculous.
"I just don't see the point. I am sure there are rich families around here who hold extravagant parties. A funeral is dull." She stated as a matter of fact before pulling her gloves over her slender fingers, pinching at the fabric until the gloves fit perfectly. She then reached down onto the lounge chair and grabbed, no, snatched her black sunhat. "and do not speak to me as if I am simply being ridiculous, I am not. I see no true value to this town." She snapped a bit.
"You are my wife, or have you forgotten, I shall speak to you in anyway I see fit." He told her, uncrossing his arms, straightening his posture now.
The Countess couldn't help the laugh that forced itself through her crimson lips, her pearly white teeth shown as she exaggeratively mocked her husband. Her demeaner changed instantly into a straight and cold expression. "You humor me, you are no husband." She quirked up an eyebrow as she placed the hat onto her head with disinterest before moving past Stefan, bumping into his shoulder as she forced herself past. She didn't get far however as he reached out, grabbing her forearm and pulled her towards him forcefully, almost knocking off her hat, earning a sudden gasp and glare from the other woman, the maids at the end of the hall were startled as the newly weds seemed to be going through yet another quarrel. They definitely didn't get along. Everyone knew that The Countess had a temper but so did The Count. This was going to result in a very loathsome marriage.
"You will respect me, Alcina." He told her sternly, his voice full of animosity.
Her stomach turned as she heard her name coming from his ungrateful mouth. "You will do your best to keep my name off your tongue. You will call me Madame when addressing me or nothing else." She then glanced down at her arm in which he still had in his grasp. She pulled her arm away and she stepped closer to him, a mere few inches from his face. "If you ever again touch me without my consent I will make sure that is the last time you touch anything." She threatened him in a low and raspy tone. He would not lay his hands on her, she would not permit it. She was of noble blood and she would be treated as such - with respect. She turned away from him before she fixed her composure, running her hands down the front of her dress to smoothen out the fabric, finally allowing herself to move down the hall, the maids followed her down the stairs towards the main hall. She grabbed her large coat that reached the floor, placed it gently and loosely over her shoulders before being escorted out to their carriage. Their bags from travelling were placed on the floor, set to the side so they were not in the way.
As she approached the carriage, Lady Dimitrescu turned to one of the butlers. "Have the rest of my bags brought to my chambers." She ordered to the man, who nodded and began to do just as he was asked.
Stefan followed after a few moments of composing himself. The last thing either of them needed was to attend with funeral, meeting new people, while in an foul mood. That would certainly make for a stressful situation. Once he got into the carriage after her, he noticed how the Countess scooted away from him. She crossed her legs, refusing to make any amount of conversation as they rode off towards their destination.
❀❀❀
You placed your hand gently in the driver's gloved-hand as he helped you out of the carriage, you had just arrived at the grave yard where the ceremony was to take place. You looked around as you stepped out, the water starting to puddle on the ground, thankfully, the driver had the umbrella opened and ready for you. You glanced around, seeing as there were quite a bit of people arriving - not surprising. Petru had many 'friends' and business partners. The driver follows in suit, keeping you dry, small rumbles of thunder echoing through the sky. You followed Nicolae, making your way towards the plot where your father was to be buried. You could see in the distance how his black coffin was already in the hole but had yet to be covered in the dirt. Many people approached you and offered you their condolences. You gave them all a false smile, just wanting to get this ceremony over with. You knew the majority of the people who arrived were all corrupt and you were sure they never cared for your father in the first place, just his status and money.
As you were shaking hands with an older gentleman, you noticed another carriage arriving. The carriage had come to a halt, gaining your full attention as you watched a man, dressed in black, a black coat and top hat climbing out of the carriage, soon followed by a woman also dressed in black, clearly a couple who had come to attend. The woman's face hidden by the shade, casted by her large black sunhat. She stood beneath an umbrella which was held by a second man, most likely her driver. The woman seemed tall, nearly the same height as the well-dressed man, she would certainly be taller than you. You observed the woman carefully. You noticed how she walked with such poise. You had never seen the man in your life, most likely never before have seen the woman either, but for all you knew, your father could have done business with these people in past.
The woman's hidden features drew your interest. You were so preoccupied staring at the woman, you didn't notice as Nicolae slowly approached you from behind, seeing as you stared at what he assumed was the other man. He cleared his throat which immediately caught your attention, you turned to look at him from over your shoulder. "Is there something I can help you with?" You asked him with a hint of distain in your voice.
He looked down at you, glaring as he was clearly jealous. "We are here to mourn your father. Not stare at other clearly married men." He said sternly. Little did he know that it was that man's wife who you were so focused on. what would he care anyways? He didn't care about you. You looked away from him immediately with an apparent frown on your lips, watching as this unfamiliar couple approached you. You couldn't help but be humored as he just assumed it was the man who you were so interested in. As the couple grew closer, Nicolae positioned himself ahead of you so he could introduce himself first.
The man approaching looked at Nicolae and he gave a polite smile "Good morning, I am Lord Stefan Dimitrescu, but please, call me Stefan." The man spoke to your husband, shaking his hand firmly. He then looked over towards the woman beside him who gently held out her hand for Nicolae to greet her. You couldn't see her face as she was facing the men, the angle of her hat blocking the view. Your eyes glanced down at the woman's glove-covered hand as your husband grabbed hers, bringing it to his lips, placing a kiss upon her glove. You happened to notice as the woman held the collar of her coat shut with her other hand. She seemed to have such a delicate touch, and had excellent style, you could not deny. You saw in your husband's eyes as she seemed to be quite breathtaking, only making you want to see her for yourself even more. "This is my wife, Lady Alcina Dimitrescu." Right after this woman's husband spoke, she seemed disinterested as she nonchalantly recoiled her hand. Why did she appear to be so bothered by her husband?
Nicolae gestured to himself first, introducing himself before turning to you. "I am Lord Nicolae Varon and this is my wife, Lady Y/N Varon." He replied. You watched as the other woman turned to finally place her eyes upon you. Her hat moving in a way that allowed her face to graze your sight, the little sun that shines, giving her a sort of glow. You were not at all disappointed in what you saw. This woman made you breathless. Your lips parted slightly in awe, your eyes quickly scanned over the woman's features, your eyes landing on the woman's lips, which apparently didn't go unnoticed as you watched her strict and firm demeanor change slightly, her lips twitching into a nonchalant smirk, the woman's eyes however still narrowed. Her stare pierced your soul, before also looking over your features - you felt a sudden panic. You both looked away towards the woman's husband as he held out his hand to introduce himself to you.
"Lovely to meet you" Stefan told you with a smile. You gave him a gentle nod, placing your hand in his, you tried to be polite and keep your eyes on him as you spoke but you couldn't help but glance at Lady Dimitrescu, seeing as she didn't take her eyes off you once.
"I apologize that we could not have met in better circumstances." You spoke softly.
Stefan looked at his Lady Dimitrescu, who broke attention towards you to returned his. "Yes, It is quite the unusual way to meet someone, we just arrived in town other wise I'm sure we would have met before. How do you know Petru Floarescu?"
"Indeed... Petru was my father." You said simply. You watched as the mans smile slowly faded and his posture straightened.
"Forgive me, I was unaware. I had only assumed his daughter kept his name" He said to her in a bit of a shocked tone.
You nodded your head gently. "I took my husband's last name after we were wed." You informed. You could see in the corner of your eyes as the smirk that was once on Lady Dimitrescu's face had left and her lips tugged downwards after you spoke. "No need to apologize." You simply spoke before you glanced back at the other woman, her demeanor appearing tense. You let out a soft sigh as you averted eye contact. "Excuse me." You spoke to the man and woman, letting them know that you were making an exit from the conversation, turning and walking away - a small frown growing on your face as you thought about your father. As much as you would love to have a conversation with the other woman, you had a funeral to attend. You carefully looked over all the people's faces who had come and taken their seats, seeing now as Lord and Lady Dimitrescu also took their seats. You took your seat at the front of the crowd, Nicolae taking a seat beside you as the ceremony went on. It may have been your father's funeral but for some reason, your mind was persistent on making you think about Lady Dimitrescu. Her beautiful blue eyes, the smoothness of her skin, her crimson - plump lips, This woman appeared to have no imperfections. Her beauty was something that proceeded to tug at your attention for the rest of the ceremony.

Take Me Far Away (Alcina x Reader)
5.6k words
Chapter 3; Poisonous Company
How does one recover from losing someone they love? A love that you felt within your soul. Your heart physically aching when they weren't around. Missing the feeling of their delicate touch against your skin - how does one forget? The sun shined through the thin curtains, barely covering the freshly cleaned window, ice forming on the exterior of the glass, small chunks breaking off and sliding as the sun rose, beginning to gradually melt small portions of the ice from the night before. The grass outside had all been glossed over with a thin layer of ice. The sound of the clock ticking in the room echoed, the chill covering Lady Alcina Dimitrescu's tender and porcelain skin as she sat there on the seat, her eyes slowly fluttering open, withdrawing herself from the precious, yet heart breaking dream of her past lover. She let out a shaky breath as she slowly sits up. She heard a sound coming from the side of her and her head slowly looked over, her movements still slow due to her still making the attempt to wake herself. Her eyesight was still blurry but she allowed herself a moment for her eyes to adjust. It was her maid, picking up the glass tea cup and saucer that she was unaware of dropping the night before. Alcina wasn't even aware that she had drifted off to sleep. She looked away from the maid, shivering a bit. She glanced at the fire place only to see the fire had died.
"Why don't you start the fire before I catch a cold?" She spoke sternly, in a raspy tone. Alcina was not a morning person.
The maid immediately nodded, placing the teacup and saucer onto the table beside the couch before swiftly making her way over to the fire. She noticed there was no more wood and she felt her stomach clench in fear. She slowly looked back at Lady Dimitrescu. "My Lady... I need to go fetch more wood." She spoke gently, her tone delicate as she didn't wish to agitate the other woman any further.
Alcina rolled her eyes, taking her left hand, firmly gripping the blanket that covered her lower half before tossing the blanket to the side of her. She then placed her hands on the cushion of the seat, pushing off it, allowing herself to get up from what must've been the most uncomfortable position giving the pain she felt in her neck and down her back. She saw in the corner of her eye as the maid was quick to approach her, trying to assist the countess but Alcina simply lifted her hand, waving the girl away.
"I'm fine child, fetch me a cup of tea. I need to go into the village, has the Count left already?" She questioned the woman as she started to walk away towards the stairs that lead her to the second floor where her room was.
The maid followed Alcina, hearing the older woman's question and she nodded her head. "Yes, my Lady, early this morning before the sun rose." She informed her. Of course he was, any chance to get an early start on business. To make more money, he would do what ever it took.
Alcina slowly started up the stairs, placing her hand against the delicate clear coating of the railing as she ascended up the stairs. The maid stopped at the bottom of the stairs, waiting for Alcina to reach the top before quickly rushing towards the kitchens to get Alcina's morning tea prepared, Once Alcina finally reached the top of the stairs, she turned and walked down the hall towards her room. She opened the door, a fresh chill coating her, covering her with chills. She walked over towards her vanity, slowly taking a seat before slowly taking out the pins from her hair, the dark, tangled hair slowly falling onto her shoulders. She held the hair pin within her hand as she looked at her reflection, her mind wondering to her dreams the night before. Alcina could hear the chirping from the birds on the other side of her windows. She gently closed her eyes, just sitting there in silence, moving the hair pin around in her palm. She liked the silence, it gave her time to think. As she was thinking about Victoria, her mind wondered to Lady Varon. She shakes her head instantly, trying to rid of the thought.
"Don't be a fool." She spoke to herself, stiffening her posture, tossing the hair pin onto the vanity. She heard a creak coming from behind her, causing her to look towards the reflection of the door through the mirror, seeing the maid standing in the doorway.
"Well? Are you going to bring me my tea or let it get cold?" She asked the young woman with a raised eyebrow. The maid closed the door before rushing towards Alcina, moving swiftly, placing the tray down on the vanity, before the Countess. Alcina gently picked up the cup of steaming tea and carefully brought the rim of the glass to her lips. She let out a soft blow onto the scolding liquid before gently letting the warm liquid pass her lips, igniting her taste buds immediately. She closed her eyes once more, enjoying the first taste, feeling as her insides warmed due to the hot tea. She then placed the cup back down onto the tray.
"Get the bath started." She ordered. All the workers who knew Alcina, were aware of her grouchy mornings, so they did their best not to take what she says while in her foul mood personally. The maid left to attend to the task that she was just given, Alcina slowly stands up, reaching behind her to gently untie the lacing for her gown. She had forgotten to change the night before. She slowly removed the top layer to her gown before beginning to remove the corset she wore, slowly using her slender fingers to loosen the strings. Her fingers delicately touched the lacing, feeling as the corset loosened from around her ribs, allowing the woman to finally take full breaths. She slowly moved her corset from around her, placing it neatly onto her vanity, leaving her in her undergarments. She looked at her figure in the mirror, her white undergarments on display as she looked over her skin. She delicately moved her fingertips over the skin of her shoulder as she began to remove the rest of her clothes. She was bare now, a cold breeze brushing over her, her body reacting accordingly. She reached out to her silk robe that was on the back of her chair, pulling it over her, tying it shut in the front. Of course as it was silk, it was cold to the touch but she didn't care much. She headed towards the bathtub, making sure the maid had finished filling her tub, adding soap, before removing her robe and climbing into the tub, submerging her cold skin into the hot water. A small hum escaped her lips, the tips of her hair getting wet. She grabbed the soap and immediately began to clean herself and relax, the maid gently dropping a few scented drops into the water, creating a peaceful and relaxing lavender aroma within the room. Alcina had many things to take care of, meeting people, making friends and persuading them to attend the wine tasting party that weekend was her mission for the day.
❀❀❀
The sound of someone knocking on your door quickly drags you from your dream, which was surprisingly pleasant considering the recent nightmares, triggered by your father's passing. Your eyes slowly fluttered open. Your body was submerged and wrapped in the comfortable blankets, your body reveling in the warmth that was created.
"Come in..." You spoke out gently, your voice groggy, calling out to who ever was on the other side of the door, most likely Andreea with your morning tea and medicine.
You hoped this medicine she was giving you would actually help you feel better but you've only come to feel worse. It came from a 'natural herb' that your husband brought home one day that he claimed would make you better. You believe it was called 'Nerium Oleander'. Your stomach ached, you trying to take in deep breaths, wheezes coming from inside your chest. You heard the door opening and it indeed was Andreea, carrying a tray with your breakfast, including your medicine. You managed to sit yourself up, still keeping the blanket wrapped snug around you.
Andreea approached your bed, placing the tray on the nightstand that was just beside the bed. She then shifted towards you, placing the back of her hand against your forehead, her hand feeling like ice against your skin. You could tell that she didn't like the temperature she felt by the disappointed sigh that came from her, sorrowfully.
You slowly moved your head away from Andreea's hand. "Yes, I know my condition is worsening. You needn't tell me." Your words may have come across as crass but you never intended them to be as such. You slowly returned your attention towards the other woman who stood there with her arms crossed, her eyebrow raised at you. She clearly didn't approve of the way you had moved from her. Which was understandable after all, she was just trying to help.
"Forgive me, I'm not myself this morning." You spoke truthfully. Something was off about you and you could feel it. Perhaps it was because of your father's passing, you weren't sure.
"Here, eat." She said in a firm tone before placing the tray of food onto your bed. You gently leaned over and grabbed the piece of toast and took a bite, taking a sip of the tea she had brought to you.
"Nicolae has received a letter this morning, my Lady." She informed you, that definitely gathered your attention rather quickly.
"What were the contents of this letter?" You asked.
"Your younger cousin, Ana has arrived in town. She wasn't able to make it to the funeral yesterday due to some complications and delays in transportation. But she wishes to meet you in town this afternoon for tea." She said gently, unfolding the napkin and placing the cloth on your lap to catch any crumbs that you may have dropped. You weren't particularly intrigued with the news of your cousin as she seemed to be the snobbiest girl you had ever met, which resulted in you trying to avoid her at all costs. She wasn't much younger than you, perhaps only a few months but she was definitely naïve. The only thing that angered you more about her attitude was her infatuation with your husband. Of course you could care less about Nicolae and what he does but your cousin seems to always want what you have, it was exhausting to be around her.
Andreea could see your disinterest in the situation. "She's only here for a few weeks." She reminded the woman.
"Indeed - Two miserable weeks." You spoke, sighing out heavily.
You finished eating your breakfast before Andreea helped you out of your bed, getting you dressed in something that was a little colorful. Sure, you were in mourning for your father but no one was in charge of the way you dressed.
After placing your shoes on your feet, with the assistance of Andreea, you left your room and headed from the room, down the hall towards the staircase and she helped you descend until you reached the main entrance hall. Marius stood there waiting patiently with a kind and generous smile.
"You look lovely this morning, My Lady." He spoke kindly as he held out your coat, open and ready for you to slip your arms into.
You smiled at him before turning around, allowing him to place the coat on your shoulders, slipping your arms into the thick insolated sleeves. The moment you placed the coat over your icy skin, you let out a soft sigh, feeling comfort now that you had something to give you the warmth that you needed.
Marius held the doors opened for you, allowing you to take each step down the few stone steps to the carriage that they had thankfully already prepared for you. With the help of your coachman, you climb into your carriage. Andreea climbing into the carriage as well as she needed to be with you just in case you needed assistance or got too tired.
As you sat there, you felt as you were really tired and worn down, what ever sickness you had was really taking it's toll on you, your eyes feeling heavy as you just stare out the window at the passing trees, the carriage moving its way towards its destination.
Birds were chirping, the breeze flowing through your hair, soaking in the warmth from the sun. You were walking through what appeared to be a garden, but it wasn't yours. Your eyes scanned over all the beautiful flowers that bloomed.
"Yes, they're beautiful, aren't they?" A voice came from behind you. Your movements halted and your heart picked up pace within your chest .You turned your head back to see the taller woman, Lady Dimitrescu slowly approaching you. She wore a rather flowy and thin gown, draping along behind her. Your eyes scanned over the woman. The dress she wore hugged her hips. She rose her chin up, holding her hands together in front of her, her hips swaying as she took her time walking towards you, seducing you with her swift movements. your lips grew dry so you gently ran your tongue along them to dampen them. Your head angled up to see the woman's face as she stood beside you. She wore no hat, the sun gleaming on her beautiful skin. Just her presence alone was enough to make you tremble. She must've been six feet tall. She lifted one white glove-covered hand to touch one of the roses.
Your eyes followed her hand as it touched the rose, her index finger gently tracing along the stem of the plant. Your mind immediately trying to imagine how her touch would feel against the smoothness of your own skin. You were completely consumed by her movements, her presence had you utterly hypnotized. You reached your hand to touch the rose but hissed as you pricked your finger on one of the thorns. A deep hum came from the woman beside you before she gently grabbed your hand, bringing your finger to her lips, licking the small bit of blood before replacing her tongue with a gentle kiss from her crimson lips. Your mouth gaping open slightly as you watched, your heart racing within your chest. The feeling of her tongue against your skin, her lips, the warm breath that you felt as she exhaled from her nose, your body shivered.
"Be careful dear... some of the plants in this garden are poisonous and aren't as forgiving." She spoke to you. These words resonated with you. They sounded like they had a deeper meaning than just being about plants. Was she talking about something else? You weren't sure. Maybe you were just over thinking. It was hard to concentrate on anything in the moment when this woman was in your presence.
You were awakened by the sudden jolt of your body - the carriage had come to a halt. You clearly arrived in town. You let out a heavy sigh, trying to gather and compose yourself after such a... blissful dream. As you waited for the coachman to get your door, you looked down at the finger that Lady Dimitrescu had graciously cared for in your dream. There was clearly no puncture but you could still imagine the feeling of her tongue, envision her lips as they gently pressed against your delicate skin. Her lips were smooth, a gentle touch. What was it about this woman that completely consumed your thoughts. She even made her way into your dreams.
'Some plants in the garden are poisonous...'. Those words circulated through your mind.
The door opened finally, letting Andreea out first before she helped you out. You looked around at all the people walking around, simply enjoying their day. The air was filled with the beautiful aroma of freshly grown flowers and fruits. You had spent so much time mournin, never leaving you room that being out in public caused you much stress.
Suddenly, you heard a voice coming from behind you, calling your name. The voice was a higher, more enthusiastic tone. You turned towards the direction the voice came and you saw the blonde, Ana.
"Ana... hello..." You tried your best to hide the fact that you wished you were leaving. You were far too tired and in pain to be even remotely excited about this visit. Ana was a relative from Marelina's, your mother, side of the family. You gave her a kind smile as she approached you and wrapped her arms around you. You of course returned her embrace, trying not to wince in pain as she squeezed you. Andreea saw this and gave you an empathetic expression. Once she thankfully removed herself, she looked towards Andreea and greeted her. You sighed out heavily, trying to ignore the cramping your body felt inside. Your eyes wondered to look around, seeing the freshly cut flowers that were on display outside, when you heard a few laughs coming from the other side of a floral hedge.
"Come, I've only just arrived and I've made the acquaintances of wonderful women. They're so youthful and radiant, I must introduce you!" She spoke so enthusiastically, as if you hadn't already met all the women in this town. You really wished that you could have your time with Ana over with but perhaps it being prolonged a little wasn't so bad.
You followed Ana, walking passed the beautiful flowers to see three women sitting comfortably, drinking tea, their sunhats covering their faces.
"Ladies, this is my cousin, Lady Varon" Ana introduced you with the biggest smile on her face as if she was showing off a prize. You smiled at the women as they looked up at you, their faces finally revealed - well, two of them did. You knew these two women. Their husbands did business with your father. The third woman sat down her cup of tea before being the last to look up at you, her hat no longer hiding her features. Your heart stopped, seeing Lady Dimitrescu sitting there, her red lipstick stained the rim of her tea cup. She grabbed her napkin and gently patted the corners of her lips before looking you up and down.
"Yes, we have met." She said to inform Ana, not once taking her eyes off of you. You felt a knot in your throat, not able to get a single word out. Your heart felt as though it might just explode from within your chest. Your eyes looked down to her lips, those lips in which you had just dreamt about, a tightness formed within the pit of your stomach.
"Come, sit." Ana spoke gently, Andreea gently pulling out a seat, across from Lady Dimitrescu. You gently placed your hand on your stomach as you approached your seat. You could feel the woman's eyes on you as you took your seat. You waited a moment before looking up at her, your breath hitched, seeing as her eyes were still fixed on you, looking at you from over her tea cup as she was taking a sip.
"So... how do you know Lady Varon?" Ana asked, clearly feeling nosy.
Lady Dimitrescu moved her eyes her away from you, giving her attention to Ana, thankfully as you needed to be able to breathe without feeling like her eyes were burning into your soul. Her eyes were always searching for something, but you weren't sure what she was actually searching for.
One of the ladies at the table snapped her fingers towards the waiter and told him to bring you a cup of tea, which he did. As he brought you the tea, you listened to the conversation Lady Dimitrescu was having with your cousin Ana.
"Lord Floarescu's funeral, he and my father were close friends a while back, business partners in fact." She started but was cut off almost immediately by yet another question from Ana.
"What kind of business?" Lady Dimitrescu widened her eyes a bit at how quick the girl was to immediately ask another question as if she was being interrogated. The Countess cleared her throat.
"Wine." She responded suddenly, not really getting into detail about both of your father's relationship. She then looked away from Ana and looked at Andreea as she stood behind you. Ana was about to ask another question but right as she opened her mouth to speak, Lady Dimitrescu asked you a question.
"How are you feeling?" You wanted to think that she actually cared but how could she? Could she tell you were sick, or was she referring to how you felt about your father. You don't know the woman and she clearly seemed to just want to stop your cousin Ana from interrogating her any further, which you were glad to be of assistance in that area.
"I am feeling much better... I got some well needed rest, thank you." you told the woman. This time, your eyes scanning over her features. Your eyes looking into her beautiful blue orbs, down to her lips. She seemed to have noticed your gaze as you watched her lips twitch into a subtle smirk. You looked away immediately, blood rushing to your cheeks but you placed your elbow on the table and your hand on your cheek as if to hide your blush, squirming a bit in your seat, crossing your legs in the process.
"Good." Her voice was lower and more mature than the other women there. There was something sultry about her voice.
"Oh, do tell her about your wine tasting" Ana said to the Countess.
Lady Dimitrescu straightened her posture and rose the cup to her lips.
"The Count and myself are hosting a wine tasting gathering at the end of the week and you are of course invited." She then tiled her tea cup, drinking some before placing the cup down, trailing her index finger delicately around the rim of the cup. Your eyes watched her finger and its delicate movements before feeling Andreea gently tapping your back, bringing you back to reality. Your mind pondered the thought of going and sighed out slightly disappointed.
"I'm not sure if I will be able to attend. My husband has a very full schedule-" You tried to talk but what the woman said next surprised you.
"Then attend without him." This shocked the other women, including Ana, who looked at the Countess with a judgmental expression on her face. You however, couldn't help the small smile that appeared on your lips. You were completely shocked at this woman. Most woman would never support the decision to attend a social gathering such as a wine tasting where other men will be without your husband. Ana's jaw had dropped which you couldn't help but be amused by.
Lady Dimitrescu gave you a subtle wink before taking yet another sip of her tea. Ana looked away from this woman who she thought was clearly out of her mind and looked at you directly.
"Or you can ask your husband?" She gently suggested with the slight shrug of her shoulders, trying to convince you that what she suggested was a better idea.
Lady Dimitrescu rolled her eyes almost instantly.
"Oh yes, nothing more liberating and exciting than requiring the permission from your husband to enjoy the opportunities in life." Her tone dripped with sarcasm. This intrigued you immensely. The other women scoffed, clearly thinking ill of the Countess but she didn't seem to care. This conversation seemed to have hit a nerve with Lady Dimitrescu, clearly not agreeing with them. You wouldn't either, these women wouldn't even use the restroom without their husbands permission, an exaggeration of course but the point still stands. The thought made you chuckle. Lady Dimitrescu was right, you shouldn't have to ask your husband, who doesn't even care about you or your well being, in order to attend the wine tasting celebration. She clearly seemed to be a free-spirit and you couldn't help but admire that. You desired to be as carefree as this woman. She definitely was like a breath of fresh air - nothing like any of the other women there in that town. Most women only did as their husbands permitted, but there was something about how the Countess spoke that made it sound like she didn't have to listen to her husband and that introduced you to the desire to also have that amount of freedom.
"You're right." You said finally, with a new sense of freedom in your heart. You were going to attend this gathering whether your husband allowed you to or not.
"Splendid." Lady Dimitrescu said with a gentle clap of her hands, a victorious grin on her lips. The other women scoffed at this. You knew these women were gossips, they were well-known throughout this town and would always talk about everyone else but you personally didn't mind what they said about you. What was the worst that could happen? Even if Nicolae found out about it, you would still find a way to go and there was nothing he could do to stop you. Who knows, maybe he would want to attend.
"The attire is formal, so make sure to wear something... presentable." She spoke, looking you up and down, was your outfit that bad?
You nodded your head, noticing how she looked at your clothes, before looking down at your cup of tea and sighed out heavily. You got the attention of the waiter and politely asked for some lemon and honey. As you waited for the waiter to return with what you had asked for, the women seemed keen on asking you questions.
"Are you still working on those paintings? Last we heard your husband had bought large amounts of paint from the mercantile, I think it would be a lovely idea if we all could come join you for tea and perhaps you could even show us some of your delightful paintings." You didn't know why they were so interested but seeing as these women never really had anything better to do, they always found ways to pass the time. You nodded your head in agreement, perhaps that could be interesting? You hadn't painted much since your father passed, but you did have a very small collection of art you have worked on and accumulated throughout the last year.
"You paint? That is interesting, I would love to see these paintings for myself." She says, crossing her legs as she takes another sip from her tea cup. It wasn't a question, was she testing you?
You nodded your head, the way her eyes peered at you forced you to look away as you physically couldn't handle her looks any longer, her gaze was too much for you to handle. The waiter returned and placed a small plate beside you with a slice of lemon along with a small container of honey. You gently squeezed the lemon juice into your tea, followed by the honey. You stirred it in before taking a sip, humming gently at the delicious taste.
"Of course, perhaps in two days? We could all have tea and I could show you all the paintings you want." You asked all three women. They all agreed, including the Countess, who was removing her gloves, slowly. You took a deep breath to keep your composure.
After some time, just casually conversing with the woman and stealing several glances at Lady Dimitrescu, who surprisingly stopped paying attention to you and looked more towards the other women - It shocked you only because this woman wasn't able to keep her eyes off of you since you first met, a man in a black suit however interrupted the now civil conversation, approaching the dark haired woman across from you. It must've been her coachman. You drank your tea but tried to pay close attention to what the man was speaking to Lady Dimitrescu about but you couldn't hear, the man was leaning over, whispering words into the woman's ears. Her expression turned sour within just a moment of speaking to the other man. You had never seen such an expression from the woman and honestly it was frightening, a little exciting. You grew even more intrigued in wanting to know what the man was talking about. Lady Dimitrescu instantly sat her cup of tea down, gathering her gloves that were placed on the table. Her hands appeared to be so smooth. You watched her as she rose from her seat.
"Excuse me ladies,- Lady Varon. It appears I am needed elsewhere." She spoke in a distasteful and sour tone, except when she spoke your name. Her voice was lower and stern, she was annoyed or upset about something, but what? You watched her as she walked away, towards her carriage, the man walking ahead of her. Lady Dimitrescu's hips swayed, you noticed before at the funeral that she had a wonderful physique and you couldn't deny to yourself that her waist and her curves were immaculate. You had never seen such a woman. Your eyes instantly averted their gaze the moment Lady Dimitrescu stopped at her carriage door and looked back at you. You stared at your tea cup, your finger tracing over the rim of your glass, trying to make it seem as though you weren't just staring at the other woman, admiring her. It was in that moment that you caught a small bit of the conversation the other women were having. Were they gossiping, about Lady Dimitrescu - already? She had just left and they were already starting up on their ridiculous habits. The gossiping annoyed you to no end.
"She is far too outspoken, I don't know how her husband can handle her." One said. Your eyes widened with shock. They were awfully blunt and rude. You furrowed your brows.
"Do not speak ill of a woman who you do not even know. That woman clearly has more class in her finger than all you combined." You huffed out, placing down your tea cup down rather harshly. You instantly felt a hand squeezing your shoulder, warning you to refrain from saying too much. Andreea always had your back, she never wanted you to get out of line and into trouble, not to mention, you shouldn't work yourself up in this way. But you weren't going to just sit there and listen to these woman gossip. You personally found Lady Dimitrescu to be wonderful. She didn't seem to care what her husband thought, she lived her life according to what she wanted and you admired that about her. The women at the table glared at you, you just matched their attitudes with a agitated expression, rolling your eyes.
"It appears as though I have had enough fun for the day." You spoke sternly, sarcastically. The women who were at the table just shook their heads at you. Never before had they been told off in such a way, they were offended. Good, perhaps it was time for them to learn better than to just gossip about anyone or anything that finds its way into this town. You wouldn't have even joined tea with these women in the first place if it wasn't for your cousin. Of course, you didn't completely regret it. You got to speak to that Lady Dimitrescu again, which was actually quite - exciting. You really hoped to get to know her more.
You got up from your seat and headed away from the table. Andreea helped you from your seat, gently taking your arm to help you rise so you wouldn't lose your balance. This obviously didn't go unnoticed by the other women, but none of them asked to see if you were alright, their egos were bruised. No more words were spoken as you moved away from the table, heading towards your own carriage. As you were walking, Andreea stepped beside you.
"What has gotten into you? I have never seen you act so foolish before." She asked you, concerned. You watched as the other woman's carriage rode off down the road. You sighed out frustrated.
"You may be alright with gossip, but I am not. It is cruel and distasteful." Your words were sharp. Footsteps were heard from behind you as you approached your carriage. Once the door was opened for you, you felt a hand on your shoulder. You turned, showing your attention to Ana who had apparently followed after you.
"I was hoping I could come spend the evening at your manor, perhaps for supper?" She seemed to be genuine. You weren't sure if that would be the best decision but you could see in her eyes that she really wanted to be there. Of course you weren't sure if it was for you or Nicolae but either way, you rolled your eyes and let out an exaggerated and irritated sigh.
"I suppose." You then got into the carriage, Ana and Andreea following after you. You paid no mind to either of the women. Your mind then went to Lady Dimitrescu and felt immediate pity. This woman had only arrived and yet, these women were speaking so ill of her. You were determined to make her feel welcome, no matter how anyone else made her feel. Although, you had to admit, she seemed to carry herself in a certain way, she seemed to be able to handle herself. But there was no harm in trying to be her friend, was there?
