Some Andrew, some Separatists of Saporia and some Cassandra
Tumblr media
Please ignore their faces, the shading, their hands and just...... every other mistake in this piece (I trusted the process, sometimes the process isn't trustworthy). But do absorb the vibes of this piece.

i feel like i’m going crazy— somebody validate my “varian sees andrew in hugo”
just. cocky, pretentious, self-assured, handsome, not that trustworthy (but varian wants to trust him). he lives with this guy for months. (trapped.) there’s an objective that both he and this guy are trying to achieve. varian would risk his life for him (but would he do the same if varian was in danger?) there’s a sense of waiting. (everything is not quite right.)
is he imagining things, reliving memories he hasn’t gotten over, or is history repeating itself? (time is a flat circle.)

So fan fact, in this time Varian’s dad is out of the rock. Varian still hasn’t seen him yet though. Though Andrew acted like a parental figure in the eclipse world (if I continue this comic this will be expanded upon.)
Also Hugo is like Varian’s partner in crime, they got sent to the eclipse world at the about the same age and made a pact that they would not ask a single question their past life on earth. So neither of them know what crime the other one did to get there, so each of them have made their own assumptions.
Nuru is also a particularly close friend of Varian, who tends to ground him. While the Saporians know they r friends, Varian keeps there friendship a bit more secretive from them, because they would totally abuse the power of him being friends with a princess.
(Nuru’s whole kingdom got stuck in the eclipse world)

Ummm controversial opinion... I kind of liked varians stupid little drawn on facial hair ... It made him look dorky like boy what are you doing?!?!?! I actually wish they fleshed out varian and andrew more because i know they were cellmates but WHY and HOW exactly did they link up??? Like in what way did he manipulate this boy

I forgot how goatee :( for better or for worse.
I LOVE Seapartist Varian's design. And I wanted to do something with symbolism and Andrew rose fore a while. Originally I wanted something where the rose would cover Varian's face but I decided not to. Then I thought it would be fun to make parallels to what Andrew did to Cassandra, Also I don't know who needs to hear this but this IS NOT ship art.
I had a hard time adding the pattern, I didn't know where to add them. They aren't my favorite but theyll do. I added the lanterns just for lighting and contrast tbh
The hardest part of this drawing was definitely the foreshorting and the colors. I drew the pose before the background and had NO idea where to place them. I was thinking to just make it a one off sketch until I realized I could put them on a balloon. Here's some sketches.

Am and forever will be an “Andrew did love Varian in his own, fucked up way. But more than anything, he loved how useful and smart Varian was, and how easily manipulated he could be. Varian was his friend, but more importantly, Varian was the perfect pawn to use against Corona” truther.

when you realize the separatists gave varian everything he ever wanted. people to be proud of him, people he can help, people who are revolutionaries and don't cower away from kings like quirin did but then it twists

I’m so sorry for asking so many questions and you may have answered this before, but this blog is so active that ten minutes of scrolling only took be back to the beginning of February so I have to ask-
What happened to ‘getting Varian the help he needs’ in season 2? Was Varian’s re-introduction in season three decided later on after Secret of the Sundrop was released? Additionally, how was Andrew as a cellmate and was Varian OKAY during the year he was with him?
So, from what I understand, originally Varian was supposed to be in S2 more. Not as in "he went with them on the journey," but as in "looking in on Corona to see what was up with him." The fact of the matter is, his role was lessened because the fans loved him so much, but that's not the character the executive producer wanted people to love. He wanted everyone to love Cassandra (his personal favorite). So, out of literal spite, he removed Varian's parts from S2, minus his ten second cameo in "Happiness Is..." that wasn't actually him.
As for what happened to getting him the help he needs? IDK, it's 100% in Frederic's personality to just shut problems away and ignore them and hope they go away. We don't know why he didn't actually make any attempt to help Varian. Or, if he did, why Varian refused it until Frederic gave up.
As for Andrew, I never personally headcanon that he was literal cellmats with Varian. We've seen before that they have tons of empty cells. So, I think they either had adjacent cells or cells right next to each other. Some way they could communicate with each other easily, makes plans, etc. But that's just my headcanon. The text of the series is that they shared a cell.
As for whether or not Varian was okay? Not really? lol Like, I don't think Andrew threatened or harmed him in any way, but he definitely manipulated him, convinced him to give into his revenge fantasies, convinced him that using Saporian magic/alchemy on the king and queen and all of Corona was a good idea. The fact is, their relationship was a lot more topical than was likely intended. Varian was basically indoctrinated into an Alt Right type mindset, and Andrew used flattery, understanding, and compassion to get to him. In other words, all the things that Varian felt his life was lacking.

I wish Tangled: the Series did a better job with its characters of color because the Separatists of Saporia were so interesting.
I want to know everything about them. I want to know their motivations. I want to know what oppression they’ve experienced and how it’s hardened them into believing that this is the only way to go to get the results they want. I want to see them treated like humans, even if they’re in the wrong.
This even extends to Andrew. He can be an absolute scumbag of a human being that never should be allowed anywhere near Varian (and certainly not in an eight-by-eight foot cell with Varian for at least six months, hello??), and he can also be complex. I don’t believe his actions and the hurt he caused should be excused, but the show would be so much better if they were at least properly explained.
Just. I could take at least half a season total of Varian and Andrew in prison, their escape, their takeover of Corona, Varian getting to know the other Separatists, answers on the way Andrew treated him, and complex worldbuilding that influenced backstories that shaped who these characters are. (And you wouldn’t even have to extend the show for that. Just cut out some of the island episodes or make the Varian-and-Andrew stuff a B-plot to cut back to! It wouldn’t have been “too confusing for the audience”, Chris! Fuck you, actually, Chris, for an abundance of reasons!)
Argh. Separatists on the brain. Separatist Varian on the brain.

At Last I See the Starlight 🚂✨
I watched Jeevan’s spaghetti live a bit ago and after listening to him sing along to the Tangled soundtrack, this idea hasn’t left my head. So enjoy a fun little crossover!
